The very existence of the modern Middle Eastern states have been “shaped by oil business,” Kneissl told the UNGA. A Middle East expert herself went on to explain that the borders of the states that were established following the breakdown of the Ottoman Empire were “based on pipelines.”

All the wars the region witnessed over the recent decades are just a continuation of this fight for the control over the fossil fuels that still “dominate the energy mix” in the world, the foreign minister said, adding that Syria, which has been engulfed in a bloody seven-years conflict, is “a victim of instability created by all these wars.”

This was the first time an Austrian top official made such statements at the level of the UN General Assembly.

Kneissl also surprised the gathering in New York as she started her speech in Arabic – a move she explained by her respect to the people, who fight for their lives in a region ravaged by wars. She switched to French, Spanish and English as well in the course of her statement.

She also criticized the international community and the UN in particular for losing real effectiveness behind the “flurry of meetings, which some diplomats turned into a comfortable endless game full of litanies and mantras.”

“We settle for these hackneyed arguments when we discuss Syria and Yemen. We get carried away with such words as reconstruction and stabilization while populations – children – are just trying to survive,” Kneissl said. Following these words, the foreign minister announced that Austria would like to “contribute to financing” the mine clearing operations in Syria.

Vienna is also “ready to increase its humanitarian commitment” to help the Yemeni people, Kneissl said as she called the Yemeni crisis, which is often neglected by the western media and officials, “the greatest tragedy of our time.”

In her speech, Kneissl also condemned the use of chemical and biological weapons as well as called for nuclear disarmament and urged the international community to do more to fight for the rights of women.

The foreign minister also criticized the US for its withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal, even though she avoided calling Washington by name. While hailing the agreement itself as a “result of multilateral action” and a “subject to independent verification system” that should be preserved, she said that “one country’s” withdrawal from its “weakens the mutual trust” and disrupts measures aimed at “confidence building.”

Vladimir Putin was filmed showing off his language skills and dancing at the Austrian FM’s wedding. The happy couple and their guests also enjoyed a performance of the Kuban Cossack Choir, which the Russian leader brought along.

The video shows Russian President Vladimir Putin arriving with a big bouquet and then dancing to a cheerful piano tune with Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl. The two smile and enjoy themselves as guests take photos and film them on their phones. Kneissl and Putin certainly didn’t forget about etiquette. The foreign minister, dressed for the occasion in a beige dirndl – a traditional alpine dress – ended the dance with a curtsy, while Putin responded with a bow.

Kneissl, 53, tied the knot with businessman Wolfgang Meilinger, 54, on Saturday in a vineyard in the picturesque town of Gamlitz.

When the guests were seated, the Russian president had the opportunity to show off his German skills. Putin delivered a lengthy toast, honoring the newlyweds and wishing happiness, harmony, and love to the couple. He also threw in a few jokes, eliciting laughs and applause from the newlyweds and their guests. He noted that Kneissl enjoys Russian culture, so he brought a bit of it with him.

The Kuban Cossack Choir, dressed in traditional red kaftans and wool hats, performed songs in Russian and German.

But that wasn’t Putin’s only gift – he also gave Kneissl and Meilinger a rural landscape painting, an antique butter churn, and a samovar – a tradition Russian water boiler used to make tea.

Special guest Vladimir Putin arrived at the Austrian foreign minister’s wedding with a beautiful bouquet of flowers for the bride. Karin Kneissl is tying the knot with multi-millionaire entrepreneur Wolfgang Meilinger.

The Russian leader didn’t arrive empty-handed. Not only did he give the bride a beautiful bouquet of yellow and white flowers, he also brought along the Kuban Cossack Choir to entertain the newlyweds and the guests. Putin also had a dance with the bride.

Putin was invited to attend the wedding en route to his upcoming visit to Germany. The ceremony is taking place at a vineyard in the village of Gamlitz, in Austria’s Styria region.

The bride and groom chose traditional attire for their special day. Kneissl donned a white dirndl, a traditional Alpine dress, while Meilinger was dressed in a green vest and black trousers.

The VIP guest list also includes Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache, and Transport and Technology Minister Norbert Hofer.

Ricciardo fourth in Austrian GP practice https://briefnews.eu/ricciardo-fourth-in-austrian-gp-practice/ https://briefnews.eu/ricciardo-fourth-in-austrian-gp-practice/#respond Fri, 29 Jun 2018 22:03:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ricciardo-fourth-in-austrian-gp-practice/ AUSTRALIA’S Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth fastest in practice for the Austrian Grand Prix, but Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton led a Mercedes one-two with Valtteri Bottas.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was best of the rest in the first session in Spielberg, but slipped back to fifth later on, behind teammate Ricciardo on the team’s home track.

“The day was alright,” Ricciardo said, who clocked one minute 05.031secs. “We changed a few things in the second practice. Somewhere in the middle, so we will go somewhere in the middle between P1 and P2 with aero and a few other bits and pieces.

“This morning, we may have been a little bit stronger than the afternoon. We changed a few things. We can find a happy medium between the two set-ups we tried.

“The tyres were all really close, so that is going to be interesting, what strategy people go for tomorrow.”

Hamilton who has a 14-point lead over Vettel after eight races, lapped the Red Bull Ring with a best of 1:04.579 in the late afternoon on the hardest tyre available.

He had also been quickest in the overcast opening session in 1:04.839. Finnish team mate Bottas was second in both, at 0.127 and 0.176 slower respectively.

Mercedes have brought aerodynamic improvements to Austria, after a new engine was introduced at the previous race in France which Hamilton won. The reigning champions have won every race at Spielberg since Austria returned to the calendar in 2014.

And Hamilton said: “The car feels better in certain areas around the track which is already a step forward from last week.

“The car felt immediately better coming out of the garage in FP1.” Bottas, winner in Austria last year from pole, also agreed that the updates were working well.

Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari filled the top six places on the timesheets in both sessions, with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen sixth in both.

French driver Romain Grosjean — who has yet to score a point this season — was seventh in both on a promising day for the US-owned Haas team. Honda-powered Toro Rosso had Pierre Gasly inside the top 10 in both sessions, although he damaged the car’s suspension in the second stint.

Russia doesn’t seek to divide EU, our biggest trade partner – Putin to Austrian TV https://briefnews.eu/russia-doesnt-seek-to-divide-eu-our-biggest-trade-partner-putin-to-austrian-tv/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-doesnt-seek-to-divide-eu-our-biggest-trade-partner-putin-to-austrian-tv/#respond Mon, 04 Jun 2018 20:28:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russia-doesnt-seek-to-divide-eu-our-biggest-trade-partner-putin-to-austrian-tv/ Moscow wants the EU to forget the claim that it’s trying to fracture European politics, Vladimir Putin told Austrian TV, ahead of his Vienna visit. Russia keeps a large chunk of reserves in euro and wants a prosperous EU, he said.

President Putin ridiculed the idea of Moscow allegedly supporting forces that strive to dismantle the EU, saying that “people in Austria and in the other European Union countries [should] put this idea out of their minds.”

“It is not our aim to divide anything or anybody in Europe,” the Russian leader said, speaking to Austria’s ORF broadcaster. “On the contrary, we want to see a united and prosperous European Union, because the European Union is our biggest trade and economic partner,” he added, explaining that instability within the bloc would harm its economic relations with Russia.

“Why rock the European Union in order to suffer further losses and incur costs or miss possible benefits from cooperation with the European Union?” the president asked. “On the contrary, we need to increase cooperation with the European Union.”

He stressed that Russia keeps as much as 40 percent of its gold and currency reserves in euro and is thus essentially interested in the stability of the single European currency. As for Russia’s cooperation with some political parties in Europe that are often described as Eurosceptic, Putin said that it is a purely pragmatic matter unrelated to any devious plans.

“We seek to cooperate with those who publicly declare that they are ready and willing to cooperate with us. This alone is the reason why our political parties, groups and movements have contacts at the political and party level with certain European ones,” he said.

Putin spoke to ORF ahead of his scheduled visit to Vienna on Tuesday, where he will hold a meeting with the Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, as well as Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache. Strache leads Austria’s right-wing Freedom Party, which is often described as Eurosceptic and advocating better relations with Russia.

On Sunday, Strache called for the “normalization” of political and economic relations between Russia and the EU, as well as for the lifting of anti-Russia sanctions. His party also vowed to fight for this as part of the Austrian government.

'US has become unreliable’: Austrian chancellor questions Washington’s commitment to EU https://briefnews.eu/us-has-become-unreliable-austrian-chancellor-questions-washingtons-commitment-to-eu/ https://briefnews.eu/us-has-become-unreliable-austrian-chancellor-questions-washingtons-commitment-to-eu/#respond Tue, 29 May 2018 03:05:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-has-become-unreliable-austrian-chancellor-questions-washingtons-commitment-to-eu/ The US, under Donald Trump’s administration, is becoming increasingly unpredictable and “unreliable” to its European partners, the Austrian chancellor noted, joining a chorus of EU members urging for more unity and self-reliance.

“The US has become more and more unreliable for us,” Sebastian Kurz told the Financial Times. “The most important thing is that Europe has to remain united.”

Concerns about Donald Trump’s administration have been growing across the EU recently. Earlier this month, a poll showed that 82 percent of Germans believe the US is not a reliable political partner after Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that Europe “needs to take its fate into its own hands.”

The major transatlantic rift first emerged after Trump pulled out of the Paris climate agreement, and it only deepened after the US administration recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, pulled out of the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal and imposed tariffs on aluminum and steel, which are due to come into force in June.

Kurz and Merkel are not the only EU politicians to question Washington’s commitment to its European partners. Earlier this month, European Council President Donald Tusk also questioned the American friendship. The US President “made us realize that if you need a helping hand, you all find one at the end of your arm,” Tusk said in Bulgaria at a Western Balkans summit earlier this month.

“Looking at the latest decisions of President Trump, someone could even think: with friends like that, who needs enemies?” he said. “But frankly speaking, Europe should be grateful for President Trump because thanks to him we have got rid of all illusions,” Tusk added, urging the Europeans to unite, against Washington’s “capricious assertiveness.”

Kurtz expanded his message to the European nations, calling on other EU capitals to mend ties with Moscow. “We won’t be able to solve the crisis in Ukraine alone… Syria, we will only be successful if we find a way to act united with the US and Russia, so I think it’s not negative for the EU if countries like Austria — which has always been a bridge-builder — has… a good relationship with Russia,” Kurtz noted.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Kurz also noted that some Western European nations are guilty of treating their Eastern brethren with contempt. He noted that current tensions in the EU are partly caused by the behavior where “some countries think that they act in a more moral and better way than others, that western European countries sometimes look down on eastern European countries.”

Austria’s Achensee is ideal for watersports

You’re wandering through a theme park, ice cream in hand, and the peaks rise up into the distance.

A pizza treat in a waterfront restaurant has views that you could never imagine at the coast and yet the weather is warm and wonderful.

Lakes & Mountains with TUI is the expert in the high points of Europe, ensuring perfect family holidays that offer so much more than the seaside.

——————————————————————————–

There are so many lakes and almost all have shingle beaches, often with water-sports.

Austria’s Achensee is the place for gentle canoeing or kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding or even learning how to waterski or wakeboard.

The north end of Lake Garda in Italy, with its rugged backdrop, is another water-sports haven and the place for windsurfing lessons.

In Garda’s south, around the resorts of Sirmione and Bardolino, you can rent a motorboat to head off to a quiet spot for a dip.

——————————————————————————–

Go white water rafting down the rapids on the river Ziller in the lively Austrian town of Mayrhofen, or in beautiful Bohinj in Slovenia.

Or try canyoning – this energetic mix of clambering, climbing, jumping and wild swimming in gorges is on offer across Austria as well as in the hills above Lake Garda’s Torbole and Riva.

Perfect for adventurous teenagers.

——————————————————————————–

Many hotels in Italy and Austria have bikes to rent or even borrow – try Strandhotel Margaretha, this warm traditional hotel with a cool, modern twist is just off the promenade in lakeside St Wolfgang.

There are easy-going cycle paths in so many other resorts too.

Pedal sedately along one of Lake Garda’s boardwalks – the Bardolino to Garda stretch is idyllic – or take a chairlift up and cycle back down in Austria’s Bad Hofgastein.

Electric bikes are popular too, letting you whirr up to magical viewpoints.

——————————————————————————–

Children of all ages will be excited by mountain walks, not least amid the red rock grandeur of Italy’s Dolomites.

Local tourist cards let you use mountain lifts. Stroll back down or parasail– parachute off the mountain with an instructor.

Get roped up with a guide for the Italian favourite “via ferrata”, dizzying mountain routes of ladders, cables and bridges.

Take to the treetops, too, with high ropes courses in Austrian resorts such as Saalbach and St Johann.

——————————————————————————–

Gardaland (sister to British favourites such as Alton Towers) is one of Europe’s biggest theme parks, everything from Peppa Pig to roller coasters, while Caneva Aquapark is a wild, wet experience.

They’re along the road from each other on Lake Garda, walkable from the resorts of Lazise and Peschiera, a bus ride from others such as Sirmione and Desenzano.

There’s always something on a mountain: stay in Slovenia’s Kranjska Gora or Bled and try the mountain coaster, or visit the free amusement park at Maiskogel Family Mountain near Zell am See and Kaprun in Austria.

Austrian migrant play dubbed 'propaganda,' canceled after outrage https://briefnews.eu/austrian-migrant-play-dubbed-propaganda-canceled-after-outrage/ https://briefnews.eu/austrian-migrant-play-dubbed-propaganda-canceled-after-outrage/#respond Sun, 01 Apr 2018 15:39:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/austrian-migrant-play-dubbed-propaganda-canceled-after-outrage/

An Austrian play about two asylum seekers – a money-motivated man “from Africa” who blundered into an ISIS trap, and an educated Syrian, who flees war – was canceled in Vienna after it was dubbed “the stupidest propaganda.”

The controversial play ‘Welt in Bewegung’ (‘World in Flux’) was due to premiere publicly at the Ethnology Museum (Weltmuseum) in the Austrian capital on Friday. However, the venue decided to scrap the production at the last moment. It had already been staged for some 10,000 children aged between 11 and 17 in Vienna’s schools.

The play tells a story of two asylum seekers in Austria: well-educated Nadim from Syria and money-motivated Mojo, who arrived from somewhere in Africa. For unknown reasons, the writers preferred not to name Mojo’s country of origin.

The motivations of main characters are shown in sharp contrast. Nadim flees his home country because of the raging war. He works hard to integrate into the Austrian society and studies German. At the end of the play, he receives his award – he is granted asylum.

By contrast, Mojo, who also happens to be a voodoo practitioner, is driven purely by money. He flees his country after watching several YouTube videos that claim refugees in Europe get cars, houses and a hefty sum of €6,000 ($ 7,400). However, his asylum application is rejected and he fails to get easy money. Finally, he falls under the influence of Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIS) and is deported by the Austrian authorities.

There is ultimately a happy ending for Mojo as well, however, as he starts a family and a business in his home country, and escapes the clutches of the terrorists.

Other characters in the play include a couple of sneaky journalists, two racist Austrian women, and a friendly yoga instructor who gives classes to refugees.

The play was commissioned by then-Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka from the center-right People’s Party, as well as the International Center for Migration Policy Development, and the Pedagogical Secondary College in Lower Austria. Its author, Edmund Enge, told Oe1 Radio station that some 350 teachers gave “almost exclusively positive critique and reactions from all sides.”

However, the majority of critics didn’t share this enthusiasm for the ‘Welt in Bewegung.’ One unnamed teacher who watched the play said that it had ‘put years of integration in danger.’

“What the play is about is what the ministry ordered. It’s actually not a play, it’s indoctrination supposed to result in thinking the right way,” Gerhard Ruiss, the head of the IG-Autoren writers’ collective, added.

According to director and political activist Tina Leisch, the Interior Ministry commissioned a “racist, poorly written” play, which turned out to be “the stupidest propaganda.” “It is a rape of what theater or art should be, and that is a call to thought, and not to say, ‘We are the ministry, and we are beating children over the head with our political positions,'” she said.

Interior Ministry spokesman Alexander Marakovits insisted that the play “has nothing to do with propaganda.” “This is just about conveying information,” Marakovits told Oe1.

The museum explained that the decision to cancel the play was taken when, “after closer examination,” the performance failed to “fit the program concept.”“We are a meeting point for people and cultures, where appreciation and excitement for cultural diversity is transmitted. We fight racism and fear of the foreigner in our museum work,” the statement from the museum said.

Like many EU states, Austria has been overwhelmed with a huge influx of asylum seekers since the refugee crisis began in 2015. In a desperate attempt to handle the crisis, Vienna doubled cash offers for migrants to leave country back in 2017. It was none other than Sobotka who said that the plan was primarily to target “those who are not likely to be granted the right to long-term residence.”
