3232‘Unconstitutional’: Neutral Austria wants no part of European army proposed by Macron, Merkel
https://briefnews.eu/unconstitutional-neutral-austria-wants-no-part-of-european-army-proposed-by-macron-merkel/
https://briefnews.eu/unconstitutional-neutral-austria-wants-no-part-of-european-army-proposed-by-macron-merkel/#respondThu, 15 Nov 2018 14:13:16 +0000http://briefnews.eu/unconstitutional-neutral-austria-wants-no-part-of-european-army-proposed-by-macron-merkel/ If Germany and France get their wish of developing a European army, Austria wants no part of it. The defense minister’s office said it would opt out, as it would conflict with Vienna’s constitution and neutrality.
Defense Minister Mario Kunasek’s office told Kurier newspaper that while Austria has no details on the army proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, it would still walk away from it because it is “contrary to the Austrian constitutional position” since Austria is neutral.

The idea of a unified European army was proposed by Macron earlier this month, with the French president insisting it is necessary in order to protect the continent from the likes of China, Russia, and “even the United States of America.”
Merkel was quick to put her support behind the proposal, saying that such an army would show the world that “there will never again be war between European nations.”
But US President Donald Trump isn’t so sure about that. He lashed out at the notion after Macron first mentioned it, reminding him that France’s enemy in both World Wars wasn’t the US, China, or Russia – it was Germany.
“They were starting to learn German in Paris before the US came along,” Trump tweeted.
Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the U.S., China and Russia. But it was Germany in World Wars One & Two – How did that work out for France? They were starting to learn German in Paris before the U.S. came along. Pay for NATO or not!
Despite the feelings of France, Germany, Austria, or any other EU member states, a European army won’t actually happen, international affairs specialist John Laughland told RT earlier this week.
“The idea of the European army is a complete fiction; there’s never been a European army and there cannot be a European army,” he said, noting that the EU cannot be legally independent from NATO unless it changes its treaties.
However, the European Commission seems to think it’s perfectly possible. A spokesman said the Commission is “delighted” by Macron and Merkel’s backing of the idea. That should perhaps come as no surprise, as Juncker himself put his support behind a European army four years ago.
“We have many times explained how we see these things. This is the Commission that wants Europe to have a meaningful defense identity,” the spokesperson said.

“These measures taken by the Austrian prime minister are, I fear, leading the world towards a war between the cross and the crescent,” Erdogan said in a speech in Istanbul on Sunday. Crescent, which can be seen on mosques and other Muslim entities, symbolizes Islamic religion since time immemorial.

“They say they’re going to kick our religious men out of Austria. Do you think we will not react if you do such a thing?” he asked, quoted by AFP. “That means we’re going to have to do something,” Erdogan added without elaborating.
Earlier this week, Austrian Interior Minister Herbert Kickl from the right-wing FPO party announced that the country vows to close seven mosques and potentially expel dozens of Turkish-funded imams and their families in Austria’s crackdown on “political Islam.”
Austrian officials, including Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, claimed the move was to battle radicalization and growing ‘parallel societies’. However, this explanation did not sit well with Ankara. “Austria’s decision to close seven mosques and expel imams is a reflection of the Islamophobic, racist and discriminatory wave in this country,” Ibrahim Kalin, the spokesman of Tayyip Erdogan, commented on Twitter.
According to him, Vienna wants to “to target Muslim communities for the sake of scoring cheap political points.” Ankara had also called the decision “racist.”
Previously, Austrian government moved to ban girls from wearing headscarves in kindergartens and primary schools. The move was part of the so-called “Child Protection Act”, presumably aimed at reinforcing Austrian culture and encouraging better assimilation.

The name comes from the GTI TCR race car. The production version is powered by a turbocharged inline-four making 286 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. That’s just six horsepower shy of the VW Golf R but 20 fewer ponies than the GTI Clubsport S. Power is sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. Traction is kept in check thanks to a mechanical limited-slip differential. The car’s top speed is 155 mph, though the limiter can be removed and the top speed raised to 164 mph.
No word on if the production version will make it to the U.S. We’d love to see the car here, but there might be too much in-house competition with the Golf R.

Some European opposition figures say the move will only create problems.
Despite more than a dozen European nations expelling Russian diplomats over the Skripal case, not every nation or politician is on board. Dissenting voices are starting to be heard, including that of the Austrian government.
Speaking to Sputnik following the announcements by various EU and other European countries, Austrian government spokesman Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal said that Vienna “will not take any measures at the national level, we will not expel diplomats.

“The reason for this is that we intend to keep open channels of dialogue with Russia. Austria is a neutral country and a kind of bridge between East and West. But we support the decision to recall the EU ambassador from Moscow.”
Other countries were already exercising caution before the Monday announcements. Ahead of a meeting with Theresa May at a European Council summit dinner in Brussels last week, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras stressed the need for an investigation into the Skripal case before jumping to conclusions. “We have to express our solidarity to the UK, to the British people, but at the same time we need to investigate,” Tsipras said.
Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, a former criminal lawyer, said he wanted to hear what May had to say at the summit before making a decision. Meanwhile, the head of Germany’s Die Linke party, Andreas Maurer, told Sputnik that the German position on the case of Sergei Skripal should not have been solely guided by Berlin’s solidarity with the European Union. Berlin chose to expel four Russian diplomats.
“I am looking now, that the Foreign Minister of Germany [Heiko Maas] is talking about the decision as a sign of solidarity – this decision on the part of Germany to send out four diplomats. This is of course, in my opinion, you have to very critically look at this. In this regard, the decision should not be taken because of some sort of solidarity. Whatever problems or errors there may have been, the position of Germany should not have been built upon solidarity,” Maurer said.

Maurer went on to note that Russia would respond with the expulsion of diplomats from all of those countries, adding that such moves will not lead to a normalization of ties. “We all know that Russia is obliged to reply to the expulsion of its diplomats. I am certain that German diplomats, which are now in Russia, will also be expelled from the country. We know that this always happens. This will not lead to solving the problem,” he said.
Even as Western countries continue to blame Moscow for the March 4 poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, UK – despite a lack of evidence – Mauer expressed a different opinion: “It is obvious here that the West does not want proof concerning the matter, what happened here, and how it happened. They have made a purely political decision, a symbolic decision, we all know this, and it is just ridiculous to expel four diplomats when we will not solve the problem in this way.”
Russia denies having any involvement in the poisoning of Skripal and his daughter Yulia, and has offered its full cooperation in the investigation. Its request for a sample of the toxic agent used in the attack has been denied by the UK.

The UK has already picked Russia as a boogey man in the incident.

Speaking in Brussels on Monday, Karin Kneissl said that she viewed the poisoning of former double-agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, England, as “abhorrent.” However, unlike its British counterparts, Austria wants to have the full picture before casting blame on someone specifically.
“Our position is: First there is the need to establish a full picture of events in joint cooperation with the Chemical agency [Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)] and all those involved” the foreign minister said.
Kneissl’s cautionary remarks come less than a week after a French government spokesperson said it was too early to discuss retaliatory measures against Russia, as its involvement in the case has yet to be established.
“We don’t do fantasy politics. Once the elements are proven, then the time will come for decisions to be made,” the spokesperson told a press conference shortly after British Prime Minister Theresa May announced she would be expelling 23 Russian diplomats over the poisoning.
The French government’s position on the matter quickly took a U-turn, however, with the Elysee Palace releasing a follow-up statement declaring Russia’s culpability in the attack. “France shares Britain’s assessment that there is no other plausible explanation and reiterates its solidarity with his ally,” the statement said.

On Monday, the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council released a statement hailing the UK’s “commitment” to work closely with the OPCW, and calling on Russia to “provide immediate, full and complete disclosure of its Novichok program” to the organization.
Novichok is a Soviet-era nerve agent allegedly used in the March 4 incident. The UK has so far failed to send a formal inquiry to Moscow about the case, although Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said that London will soon provide the OPCW with samples of the nerve agent used in the case. Johnson had earlier accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of personally ordering the attack.
Moscow has countered that view. “The fact, that they [UK officials] categorically reject to file an official request and deliberately and arrogantly fan anti-Russian rhetoric in the public sphere bordering on hysteria, indicates that they clearly understand they have no formal pretext to go down a legal road,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.
On Monday, Johnson doubled down on his inflammatory rhetoric, describing Russian denials of responsibility in the nerve agent attack as “increasingly absurd.”

St Anton in Austria has 300 miles of sweeping pistes
Today it is a pocket dynamo, transforming with the times but in close touch with its traditional Tyrolean roots.
Set on the pinnacle-packed Arlberg massif, peaks tower to over 9,000ft and more than 300 miles of sweeping pistes and fierce powder fields are a 70-minute drive or scenic train ride away from Innsbruck.
Here the super-modern, in the shape of classy hotels and cable cars – their futuristic structures beautiful enough to earn a Grand Designs slot – carves an elegant counterpoint to candlelit restaurants, stylish boutiques, galleries and skating and curling rinks.
St Anton is a heady brew like nowhere else, a local told me as she boarded her toboggan one morning for her commute to work, reflecting, “Sometimes when you are a small place and when you get bigger you surrender your soul, but we’ve not done that.”

With capes, caps, skinny legs and zany, windmilling arms, they are instantly recognisable as pop icons The Beatles.

Thousands of demonstrators have gathered in Vienna to protest the swearing-in of the new Austrian government. The rally targeted the anti-immigrant Freedom Party of Austria (FPO), which has joined the coalition government.
Up to 6,000 people gathered in the Heldenplatz area near the official residences of the Austrian president and chancellor, Vienna police said on Twitter. Members of anti-fascist, feminist and left-wing student groups are among those protesting against the coalition between the conservative Austrian People’s Party and the nationalist FPO. The demonstrators held banners reading “Nazis out” and “Don’t let Nazis govern.”
Some 1,500 police officers were deployed in Vienna, Kleine Zeitung newspaper reported. Photos on social media show protesters setting off firecrackers at the rally. The protesters began a fire in Heldenplatz, police later wrote on Twitter.
The FPO officially joined Austria’s new coalition government on Friday after it struck an agreement with Sebastian Kurz’s Austrian People’s Party (OVP), following the OVP’s resounding success in October’s parliamentary elections. The FPO came third with 26 percent of the vote, less than 1 percent behind the second-placed Social Democrats.
The FPO, which returned to the Austrian government after an absence of almost 18 years, is known for its hardline anti-immigrant stance – helping it gain public support amid a massive inflow of refugees to Austria in recent years.
Earlier, FPO leader Heinz-Christian Strache vowed that his party would work to rescind anti-Russian sanctions as part of the new government. The FPO would “seek a solution in the interests of Europe” that would allow “Europe and Russia to come together once again,” he said.

No, it’s not Glastonbury, Wembley or the O2. It’s somewhere so far out of their comfort zones it’s very unlikely you’ll know the answer.
So to put you out of your misery it is Ischgl. You’re probably none the wiser, unless you are a skier or snowboarder.
For Ischgl is a brilliant ski resort in the next valley to better known St Anton in Austria. No one has ever seen the stars hurtling down the slopes but thousands have seen them rocking on-stage high up in the mountains to celebrate the end of the ski seasons. The Top of the Mountain concerts started in 1995 and every year they have helped Ischgl attract more and more British skiers.
We spent a week in the marvellous, easy-to-get-to resort and discovered why everyone seems to go home with a smile on their face.
The 150 miles of slopes are first class. The snow from November to May is usually excellent, the town is fun and the hotels are top notch.
Everywhere we went, whether up on the mountain or strolling through the interesting streets with their inviting shops and bars, young and old were having a great time.
We stayed at the excellent 4-star Seiblishof Hotel where owners Dagmar and Christoph guarantee an “unforgettable time”. And it was.
The reception area has a big inviting bar which was always full of laughter. The rooms were very unusual but extremely comfortable. Our suite had a bath and shower which were curiously positioned in the centre of the room and the loo was hidden away in a wardrobe-type cupboard. Once we got used to it, everything seemed extremely well designed and practical. Breakfast and the four-course dinners, including a splendid salad bar, never disappointed.
All the facilities at the hotel were well thought out and the swimming pool, spa and childcare were excellent.
The hotel is situated just a short walk up the main street to the best lift which whisks you over the tree-topped valley to a ski bowl where there are wonderful pistes for skiers of all abilities, from first-timers to the most experienced.
While we were there, we were bathed in all-day sunshine, while snow fell on most nights. On one occasion we watched as about 12 inches came down, leaving the pistes in magnificent shape.
That’s when we decided to take up the challenge of the “smugglers’ run”. These are pistes over the top of the mountain taking you into Switzerland. From the early 1900s smugglers used them during tough times.
Locals tell how their ancestors skied over the mountains carrying butter, cheese and fur in exchange for coffee, rice, flour and tobacco.
All over the slopes we found brilliant restaurants. At The Berg, we had the finest pizzas we have tasted and down in the town, the steaks at the Trofana Royal hotel were also excellent.
As in most Austrian resorts, the après-ski was outstanding.
The Elisabeth Arthotel was raucous but tremendous fun. And when the Trofana Royal stopped cooking steaks, it went wild.
Best of all was the Kuhstall near the Silvrettabahn lift which was warm, welcoming and very friendly.
But no matter how raucous the partying got, at 8pm it all calmed down – in the streets, anyway. A local by-law forbids anyone wearing ski boots from walking around the town.
The law is rigorously enforced and anyone flouting it faces a £2,000 fine. It was introduced to ensure that those who wanted to go to bed early could get a good night’s sleep.
