Originating from a farm in Western Australia, this is the first time a contaminated punnet has surfaced in New Zealand after more than 100 alleged incidents of pins and needles being found in fruit such as strawberries, mangos and bananas have been reported in Australia since the scare began in the state of Queensland earlier this month.
The Choice brand strawberries were sold in a Woolworths-owned Countdown supermarket in Auckland, one of New Zealand’s biggest supermarket chains. Countdown have since pulled the Australian strawberries from their shelves while the incident is being investigated.
Rival chain Foodstuffs have also halted deliveries of Australian fruit as a precaution.
In a company statement on Sunday evening, Countdown assured customers that for “their piece of mind,” they are able to return any Choice brand strawberries they may have at home for a full refund.
“We take food safety very seriously,” Countdown’s statement read, adding that the firm was already in touch with Australian authorities investigating the presence of needles in fruit.
Maintaining that no injuries or illness caused by contaminated fruit have been reported in New Zealand, Countdown also recommended that any Choice brand fruit is cut up prior to consumption.
The news of Australia’s fruit contamination scare spreading beyond its borders is the latest blow for Australian fruit growers, who have seen a plummet in demand and wholesale prices since the crisis started earlier this month.
Authorities have committed AUS$ 1 million to assist struggling growers cope with the crisis, while Queensland has offered a AUS$ 100,000 reward for any information that leads to an the arrest of someone responsible for fruit tampering.
While the majority of cases have been regarded as copycats or hoaxes, two minors have been questioned by police over reported pranks. The government has also rushed through new legislation to increase the amount of jail time for food contamination from ten to fifteen years.

Jeremy Poxon was underemployed, confounded by bureaucracy and losing hope. Like many young Australians struggling to find a way into the job market after graduating, Poxon turned to the country’s welfare provider, Centrelink, to access paltry benefits to help pay the bills. It didn’t feel great.
He had no expectations from the current conservative Liberal government, accused of demonizing the unemployed and underemployed through controversial policies including refusals to raise unemployment and disability benefits and a plan to enforce drug tests on welfare recipients. Where Poxon soon found sympathy — and solidarity — was in left-wing communities online that are challenging the notion that welfare beneficiaries are a dysfunctional drain on the country.
Those online conversations led Poxon to the Australian Unemployed Workers Union (AUWU), an organization established in 2014 but with deep roots in labor history dating back to mass unemployment in Depression-era Australia. He now volunteers there — and is an example of the way Australia’s sagging union movement is increasingly trying to reinvent itself. Once a powerhouse of Australian political life with a legacy so vital to the country it is part of history curricula, unions in Australia have been unable to buck the global trend of declining memberships. Each successive generation is less and less inclined to join a union, but for millennial activists it has never been more important for young people to be involved — and they know just how to get them, riding on online discussions, debates and platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
Finding that sort of narrative and being part of that community is really empowering.
Jeremy Paxon, underemplowed worker and labor unionist
The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) is leading the charge. With a history dating back to the 1850s, the union looks after workers in the manufacturing sector, from food production to car manufacturing, and has built a reputation for leading some of the most effective campaigns in the contemporary labor movement. Handing over the reins of the official Twitter account to millennial activist Georgia Kriz may have been the organization’s savviest move yet. With Kriz at the helm, the account reached bona fide cult status in early 2016 when it began utilizing memes and the endemic language of the internet to discuss workplace relations. While many an organization has tried and failed — often going viral for the wrong reasons — the authenticity saw the account find engagement rarely reached in Australian digital campaigning.
The Young Workers Centre, based in Victoria, uses social media to draw millennial Australians to its battle against casualization of the workforce and several high-profile cases of wage theft over the last 18 months. And Poxon may never have joined the labor movement had he not found like-minded individuals online.
“Finding that sort of narrative and being part of that community is really empowering,” he says. “It’s not an opinion you see often. I was living in country Australia and didn’t have many outwardly leftie activist friends, so I wasn’t seeing much of an opinion which doesn’t put all the pressure on the job-seeker.”
For sure, social media is no replacement for traditional campaign tactics, say union leaders. But it is already proving impactful.
Heading into the Australian summer, 140 AMWU members working at the Streets ice cream factory in Minto, New South Wales, faced a 46 percent pay cut. Negotiations between the company, owned by multinational giant Unilever, and the union broke down in late October. AMWU urged its 10,000 Twitter followers and 20,000 Facebook fans to boycott Streets products, including the iconic Paddle Pops and Golden Gaytimes, which melt down the wrist of every Australian over summer. “We were locking in for a really long campaign and then there was this huge online response we didn’t quite expect,” George Simon, also a campaigner with AMWU, says. “This really tapped into a broader sense of inequality and corporate greed.”
The Young Workers Centre uses photos of its activists hitting the streets in protest to galvanize attention to issues that affect young workers — whether wage theft or safety issues. It’s more important than ever for young workers to know their rights, media officer Amy Fitzgerald says. The Centre also monitors discussions online at Reddit and popular local forum Whirlpool to direct users experiencing workplace problems to its legal team.
And the AUWU helps decode the “labyrinthine language used on government websites” to assist those underemployed or unemployed, says Poxon.
Fundamental challenges persist. Union membership continues to decline in Australia, with the latest figures reflecting an overall drop in blue-collar jobs as they head overseas. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics found an almost 5 percent drop in public sector workers who are members of a union between 2013 and 2016, with an all-time low of 38.5 percent. Political opposition remains strong too. The current minister for jobs in Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s government, Michaelia Cash, has accused the AUWU of actively keeping members out of employment.
But converting the supporters into members is not necessarily the goal of social media–based campaigning, says AMWU’s Simon — or necessary to be effective. Look no further than the campaign to boycott an iconic ice cream brand. “For most young people it was likely their first ever participation in a union campaign, and you can’t buy that,” he adds.
The AMWU was surprised by the response, Kriz says. Facing a long summer of muted sales, Streets announced a wage offer in late November, getting the Minto plant back to work and Paddle Pops into the hands of thousands of holidaying Australians. “Now,” says Kriz, “people can see what the Australian union movement can do.”

Let’s get down to the serious stuff… Did Brexit affect Freddo prices?
— Jay
(@lufc4625) October 17, 2017
The humble Freddo isn’t anywhere near Britain’s most popular chocolate bar — it is far more widely eaten in its native Australia, where 90 million Freddos are scarfed annually, according to Cadbury. But it’s the U.K. where its curiously oversize status in popular culture is somewhere between legendary and meme-worthy.
Before I vote next week, @jeremycorbyn@timfarron@theresa_may, where do you each stand on the frankly, criminal price of Freddo bars?
— Dan James (@dljames93) June 1, 2017
Comprising just 18 grams of Cadbury’s dairy milk chocolate poured into a frog-shaped mold (caramel-filled versions are also available), the tiny snack began life in the U.K. in 1994 at just 10p. The price stuck around until 2007, when it jumped by half to 15p, the first in a series of hikes. Since 2006 the average consumer product in the U.K. has increased in price by less than 25 percent due to inflation. The Freddo? It’s tripled. And it hasn’t escaped the notice of young Brits who came of age in the 10p glory days. (Cadbury, and its parent company Mondelez International, did not respond to requests for comment.)
There’s a “childhood nostalgia” for Brits age 35 or so and younger of being able to buy a Coke, a comic and a chocolate bar for less than a pound, says Ben Harrow, who created a Freddo Index for money-saving brand Vouchercloud to rival The Economist’s famous Big Mac Index. “We weren’t at the age when increasing bills or house prices affected us, but we damn sure noticed the price of Freddos going up,” he says.

But the history of the Freddo stretches well beyond the memories of millennials, and to the other side of the world. In colonial Australia, sugar was an important commodity, and the British imported their sweet tooth to the land down under, writes confectionery historian Tim Richardson in Sweets: A History of Temptation. “The most famous old Australian candy company,” Richardson writes, was MacRobertson’s, founded in 1880 by a 19-year-old Scot named Macpherson Robertson who made novelty sweets in the bathroom of his family’s house.

As the business boomed and his factory in Fitzroy, a suburb of Melbourne, became the largest confectionery works in the Commonwealth, “Mr. Mac” was himself part of the Willy Wonka–esque branding of his company. He was habitually dressed in a pristine white suit, his employees clad in white uniforms and his factories painted white; the company’s delivery trucks were pulled by prize gray draft horses. His autobiography paints a romanticized story of his rags-to-riches tale, making Robertson Melbourne’s “equivalent of the Dick Whittington legend,” according to the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
In recent years the Australian Freddo has not only risen in price but also shrunk in size, by almost half.
But it wasn’t Robertson who came up with what became his company’s most iconic product. In 1930, as MacRobertson’s was designing a new mouse-shaped chocolate bar, a young employee piped up to say that he thought women and children would be scared of mice and that perhaps a frog would be a better idea. The legendary 71-year-old Robertson “just looked at me, this 18-year-old molder, and I thought I’d lost my job,” Harry Melbourne later remembered. But the idea stuck, and the Freddo was born. Macpherson Robertson was knighted in 1932 by George V and died in 1945. His company was sold to Cadbury a couple of decades later. Harry Melbourne, the true brains behind the Freddo, died in 2007 and was buried with a Freddo Frog flag draped over his coffin.

Now, Freddos have become the subject of one of the U.K.’s most enduring in-jokes. Last month, when the Daily Mirror reported a 490-billion-pound correction in Britain’s national accounts, the newspaper helpfully translated the giant sum into something more understandable for its audience — that’s 1.63 trillion Freddos. And on a recent episode of the BBC comedy panel show Mock the Week, 31-year-old comedian Ed Gamble suggested that the queen should command Cadbury to lower the price of Freddos back to 10p. Responded 45-year-old Dara O’Briain, “There’s a generational thing with the Freddos, let it go! … Everyone’s obsessed with the cost of Freddos.” To which Gamble retorted: “Just because you come from a time when you could buy a house for 10p …”
Of course, rising prices are not a uniquely British problem: In recent years the Australian Freddo has not only risen in price but also shrunk in size, by almost half. Although “shrinkflation” has hit several other popular chocolate bars on British shelves, especially since the value of the pound declined after the Brexit vote, the Freddo is actually one whole gram heavier today than it was in the ’90s. But it seems only the Brits are mad enough to base an entire nationwide in-joke on it.

Brisbane’s famous venue, nicknamed The Gabbatoir for its ferocious atmosphere, has not seen a home defeat in 28 matches spanning 29 years.
But the England captain insisted his side have the personnel to emerge with a first Ashes win there since 1986 to put their hosts on the back foot going to the day-night Test in Adelaide.
“We are going to go out there to try and upset that [record] and we fully believe we are more than capable of doing that,” said a bullish Root.
“It would certainly put them under a lot of pressure because they haven’t lost here for such a long period of time and that is our main goal.
“But to do that we have to make sure we are absolutely ready. If we get our heads around that we will be in a really good place after five days.”
England are understood to have finalised their line-up for the series opener with Jake Ball recovered from his ankle sprain and set to be confirmed in a four-man seam unit.
But they are considering swapping around Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow with the off-spinning all-rounder a possibility to leapfrog the wicketkeeper to No6 in the order.
Moeen insisted he was yet to be told where he will bat but was happy to help out at any place in the order from five to eight. And he fully backed up his captain’s hopes when it came to landing the early victory.
“There is genuine confidence that we can win here,” he said. “It’s going to be tough for us but records are there to be broken and hopefully we can do that.
“We have guys who’ve batted well here before. It would be great to come away with a win and get a good start to the series.”
England downplayed suggestions in Australia that Ben Stokes, currently awaiting the outcome of a police investigation into an incident in Bristol in late September, was any closer to joining up with the squad. A spokesman for the side insisted there was “no change” in the all-rounder’s situation.
However Root did call on his players to step up and fill the gap left by his absence.
“It’s very difficult to replace Ben Stokes, but rather than replacing him it’s more important the guys bring the best version of themselves out there and not try to replicate something he would do,” he said.
“It’s an opportunity for everyone to step up and do special things like Ben can do on the field. We’re all capable of doing it in our own way so this week is a chance for someone to go out and do that.”
Local theories about the disappearances fuel the intrigue, from tales of molestation and abduction to murder. Search parties are sent out, and one young man finds Irma, dazed but alive. Parents start withdrawing their daughters from Appleyard, and teachers begin resigning. One teacher dies shortly after in a hotel fire. A schoolfriend of the girls commits suicide, as does the college principal — by jumping from Hanging Rock’s peak.
’Picnic at Hanging Rock’ taps into national myths about the bush and what some commentators call the national psyche.
Therese Davis, media professor, Monash University
This is the plot of Picnic at Hanging Rock, the classic 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay, which, in 1975, became an iconic film directed by Peter Weir. Whether the story is fact or fiction is a debate that has gripped Australian popular culture since its publication — even though the notion that the story is based on real-life events has been disproved time and again.
Imaginations were ignited by a small nugget that conspiracists took as truth. “Whether Picnic at Hanging Rock is Fact or Fiction, my readers must decide for themselves,” Lindsay wrote in the novel’s introduction. She continues the tease by noting how “all the characters … in this book are long since dead.”
Picnic mythology has become inescapable in Australia. “[It] taps into national myths about the bush and what some commentators call the national psyche,” says Therese Davis, a professor of media at Monash University. Think of it as the original Blair Witch Project — an unsolved, potentially real-life mystery that proved hugely popular in both written and cinematic form. Indeed, the book’s afterword is pseudo-historical, seemingly extracted from a local newspaper in 1913. The story reports that soon after the events at Hanging Rock took place, Appleyard and the local police station — where records of the incident were supposedly kept — both burned down in a bushfire, leaving no traces.

In “Beauty, Myth and Monolith: ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ and the Vibration of Sacrality,” Annabel Carr writes that Picnic “coerced audiences beyond the parameters of comfort in its unmistakable allusion to some incorporeal ‘other’; a domain which represents both the unknown and the unknowable.” Those who buy into the Picnic myth relish in its complexities. Many have hung themselves up trying to figure out whether Appleyard was a stand-in for the Clyde Girls’ Grammar School that Lindsay attended as a child, and which has since been relocated to the same physical location as the fictional Appleyard.
Lindsay herself had several experiences that encouraged conspiracists. She reported, for instance, that she couldn’t wear a watch because timepieces tended to stop when she wore them. She also recalled seeing a half-dozen nuns running across a field while she was driving with her husband (he saw nothing). Later, Lindsay’s mother-in-law told her there had been a convent in that area, and that it had burned down years before.
In The Secret of Hanging Rock, John Taylor attests in the introduction that “reality had a way of behaving a little differently toward Joan.” He recalls that when discussing the obsessive fans who had been trawling through newspapers and historical artifacts to unearth the “real” events, he and Lindsay agreed the search was “fruitless,” but that Lindsay absent-mindedly added, “[B]ut something did happen.”
Lindsay, of course, might well have been stoking the flames of hearsay on purpose. During filming of the movie, Lindsay, when on set, would call actor Anne Lambert, who played Miranda, by her character’s name, creating speculation that Lindsay knew “Miranda” in real life. Whether or not this was calculated remains unknown, but it certainly added to the mystery surrounding Lindsay’s literary secrets.
In an interview for the 2003 Criterion Collection edition of Picnic, Weir recalled how, when meeting with Lindsay for the first time, he couldn’t help but ask if the story was true, despite being warned not to. “Young man,” she said, “I hope that you do not ask me the question again.” Undeterred, he pressed her further, asking if the girls fell to their deaths, or were abducted by aliens. “Any of the above,” was Lindsay’s reply. And isn’t that the very essence of what makes a cultural myth so rich and beguiling? We can make of it what we will, and Australians have managed to galvanize this particular myth … or, to many, this unresolved, mystic disappearance.
