American Idol‘s second round of Season 19 auditions did not feature any more children of disgraced political figures, but it did introduce us to a girl who kind of looks like Katy Perry. And that’s not nothing.

The look-alike in question was 17-year-old Hannah Everhart, who charmed the judges with a lovely (if somewhat reserved) rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Wayfaring Stranger.” She had an interesting tone to her voice, but the judges needed to hear more.

They were slightly more impressed with her work on Etta James’ “At Last,” but the amount of coaching and encouragement this took has me wondering how Everhart will fare when the competition gets tougher.

Watch her audition below, then read on for a breakdown of 10 other memorable singers continuing through to Hollywood:

AMANDA MENA, 18 | This week’s first golden ticket went to Mena, an undeniable star who opened the episode with a killer rendition of The Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers.” In addition to earning that coveted sheet of paper, Mena was also dubbed “one of a kind” by a very impressed Perry.

AMMON OLAYAN, 17, and LIAHONA OLAYAN, 16 | This magical, musical brother-sister duo — the eldest of eight kids! — discovered their songwriting abilities while living in tents and raising goats. And in front of three slack-jawed judges, they demonstrated those talents with one of the best original songs I’ve heard on Idol in a long time (maybe ever?), a radio-ready jam that earned them unanimous yes’s across the board. The only hiccup, which I’m now predicting will result in a dramatic cut during Hollywood Week, is that older-brother Ammon needs to work on his delivery.

ANTHONY GUZMAN, 27 | No one, least of all the judges, would have guessed that this “modern Viking” was packing a set of pipes befitting an old-school crooner — especially since he was introduced via an over-the-top Avengers parody. “Don’t judge a book by his hammer,” Perry mused before giving him one of his two yes’s. (Despite Guzman helping Bryan get back to his Scandanavian roots, it was a no from him.)

CALVIN UPSHAW, 26 | The judges were really feeling this audition, an emotional performance of Calvin Richardson’s “Falling Out.” It was a little hard to tell whether the judges were fully sold on the song, or if they were just overcome by his heart-tugging backstory, but they sent him through either way.

CASEY BISHOP, 15 | This star-in-the-making was full of wonderful surprises, from her taste in music (Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, etc.) to her powerhouse vocals. The judges enjoyed her countrified Motley Crue cover, but they loved her follow-up performance, a rendition of Ella Fitzgerald’s “My Funny Valentine” that was so good it literally made Perry giggle with delight.

YURISBEL, 25 | The judges have made some questionable decisions this season, but sending this “Cuban Cookie Monster” through to Hollywood might top them all (so far). Sure, he had a lot of energy, but so do bar mitzvah hype dancers. Where are their golden tickets?! Anyway, catching up with this guy in Hollywood Week should be… interesting.

CHAYCE BECKHAM, 24 | Another clear Top 10 frontrunner, this charmingly unconfident heartthrob has the kind of gravelly voice that quite simply gets you pregnant. And Kolton Moore & The Clever Few’s “What Brings Life Also Kills” was the perfect vehicle to show it off. Beckham better say his goodbyes to Apple Valley (there aren’t even any apples!) because he’s got a long future in this competition.

CASSANDRA COLEMAN, 24 | What is there to say about this musical angel, who blew the judges away with a powerful performance of The Killers’ “The Way It Was”? I kept trying to place her sound, but Bryan put it best: “You are a new voice that the world has never heard.”

WILLIE SPENCE, 21 | Not since the days of La’Porsha have we been treated to a “Diamonds” cover of this magnitude, but while she used the song to show off her lower register, Spence shined with his soaring high notes — the perfect cap to what felt like an extremely long night of auditions.

* While this recap focused solely on the contestants who made it through to Hollywood, can we take a minute to talk about Ace Stiles, the boy with the “quirky, vintage” voice who shared his story of coming out as transgender at 14? I’m not saying that I disagree with the judges’ decision that Ace needs a little more confidence and life experience to develop as an artist, but the whole segment felt a little… is exploitative too extreme of a word?

Kellyanne Conway’s Daughter Claudia Auditions for American Idol — Watch https://briefnews.eu/kellyanne-conways-daughter-claudia-auditions-for-american-idol-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/kellyanne-conways-daughter-claudia-auditions-for-american-idol-watch/#respond Tue, 09 Feb 2021 10:02:56 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/kellyanne-conways-daughter-claudia-auditions-for-american-idol-watch/

Claudia Conway is looking to succeed where her mother’s former employer could not, by securing America’s vote.

The 16-year-old daughter of Donald Trump’s onetime senior counselor Kellyanne Conway appears in a new promo for the upcoming 19th season of American Idol, which blew up Twitter during Monday’s episode of The Bachelor.

“I’m very nervous, but very excited,” Conway says in the promo, referring to her parents as “high-profile political figures” upon her dramatic meeting with the judges.

Watch the full promo below:

While this is sure to take most readers by surprise, it should be noted that Conway hinted at her involvement with the ABC show in late 2020 when she posted a TikTok with current Idol judge Katy Perry. (Other judges include Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, with Ryan Seacrest also returning as host.)

Conway certainly isn’t the first public figure with political connections to make the leap to reality television. Let us take a moment to recall Sarah Palin’s unforgettable performance of “Baby Got Back” on The Masked Singer, or Sean Spicer’s haunting moves during his season of Dancing With the Stars. Honestly, we could list more examples, but we’ve inflicted enough damage for one night.

American Idol returns Sunday, Feb. 14 at 8/7c. Hit PLAY on the video above, then drop a comment with your thoughts (if any?) below.

Coronation Street fans baffled as former star auditions on Little Mix The Search ‘Hang on’ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-fans-baffled-as-former-star-auditions-on-little-mix-the-search-hang-on/ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-fans-baffled-as-former-star-auditions-on-little-mix-the-search-hang-on/#respond Sun, 27 Sep 2020 17:41:16 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-fans-baffled-as-former-star-auditions-on-little-mix-the-search-hang-on/

Little Mix The Search kicked off on BBC One on Saturday as the X Factor winners went on the hunt for an all-new band to join them on their next tour. The premise of the shows sees band members Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jesy Nelson put budding singers through a series of auditions to see if they have what it takes to secure a spot in a prospective band. With the boyband category kicking off the show, fans of ITV soap Coronation Street were bamboozled to spot a familiar face.

Aspiring singer Elliott appeared on the BBC singing contest on Saturday evening in the hopes of impressing the Little Mix girls.

As he began he introduction, he told viewers: “I want to be the most famous ever to come out of Oldham.”

The auditionee then explained his acting past, which has included roles in Coronation Street and Channel 4 soap, Hollyoaks.

“When I was 15, I went to my first acting class,” he said.

“Next minute,” Elliott continued. “I’m an actor, what else can I say?”

Elliott then reeled off his CV before being asked what role he played on the ITV serial drama.

“Coronation Street, I was just a walk-on,” he explained before adding: “But I got a lot of camera time.”

And it appears he did indeed as viewers quickly took to social media to express their surprise at seeing him on the talent show.

While a fourth tweeted: “Winky Elliott is very good. And he was in Corrie so that’s a YES. #LittleMixTheSearch.”

“Elliot looks like an extra from Coronation Street… hang on, what? #LittleMixTheSearch,” a fifth joked.

Elliott certainly impressed the band as he made it through to the final round of auditions for a part in the boyband.

However, with just five spaces available in the group, the last seven singers had to perform in front of a live audience to see how they got on.

And sadly for the former Corrie star, he didn’t quite make it, saying his goodbyes at the end of the episode.

However, he stayed optimistic, telling Little Mix: “I didn’t even expect youse to view my tape.”

Jesy encouraged him to keep pursuing his singing career due to his talent but unfortunately, it won’t be on Little Mix The Search.

Little Mix The Search continues on Sunday at 6:45pm.

So You Think You Can Dance Recap: The Season 16 Premiere Auditions, Ranked https://briefnews.eu/so-you-think-you-can-dance-recap-the-season-16-premiere-auditions-ranked/ https://briefnews.eu/so-you-think-you-can-dance-recap-the-season-16-premiere-auditions-ranked/#respond Tue, 04 Jun 2019 10:52:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/so-you-think-you-can-dance-recap-the-season-16-premiere-auditions-ranked/

RELATED STORIES

The lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are nearly upon us, and they’re bringing a new season of So You Think You Can Dance with them.

Fox’s Little Reality Show That Could returned on Monday night for its 16th cycle, and it’s made a few changes during the off-season. For one, all of the auditions now take place in Hollywood, with the contestants now traveling to Los Angeles for tryouts instead of the show visiting different cities. (I can’t help but think that puts less-fortunate contestants at a disadvantage if they can’t afford to travel to California, no?)

Then there’s the audition stage, which is a newly constructed, in-the-round venue for hopefuls to perform on, complete with a raucous audience watching their tryouts. Plus, there’s more than 100 cameras embedded in the circular stage, which gives every audition a 360-degree, E!-Live-From-the-Red-Carpet vibe. Have you ever wanted to see a jeté from every angle? And in slow motion? Your wish is Fox’s command.

Some things are the same, of course: Longtime judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy are back for another season, but they’re joined this time by newbies Laurieann Gibson (who’s choreographed for many a pop star) and Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval (who competed on SYTYCD in Season 3). Frankly, this is already my favorite season, if only because the entire judging panel is made up of pros who know what they’re talking about. (I do still have nightmares about Jason Derulo’s non-critiques, thank you for asking.)

Monday’s season premiere didn’t waste much time (or any time, really) on bad or gimmicky auditions. Instead, the episode showcased five contestants who earned a ticket to the Academy, all of whom made at least one judge cry. And it was usually Dominic!

The only auditioner who walked away empty-handed on Monday was Amanda Butler, a mother of three who was joined by the all-female, moms-only hip-hop crew with whom she normally dances. Amanda’s skill level wasn’t quite high enough to score an Academy ticket, but her routine did give me a reason to rewatch the Season 14 group number set to RuPaul’s “Call Me Mother.” (As we all should do on a regular basis, frankly.)

Let’s break down the premiere’s five successful tryouts, ranked from weakest to strongest:

SYTYCD Season 165 | Stephanie and Ezra Sosa (Ballroom) — Stephanie was a standout of last season’s auditions and Academy episodes, so I was thrilled to see her back, this time with brother Ezra in tow. Their jive, set to “Proud Mary,” was infectiously fun and sassy — though I was disappointed to see Stephanie’s energy flag the tiniest bit at the end, as Ezra was preparing to do one last trick off her back.

4 | Sarah “Smac” McCreanor (Jazz) — Mary Murphy aptly called Sarah the “Lucille Ball of dance,” and I got a distinct Emma Stone vibe from some of the faces she pulled, too. (Which is a compliment!) Sarah had a keen sense of timing, knowing just when to throw in a faux-sneeze or funny expression in tandem with the music. I do wish, though, that we’d seen a little more straight-up dancing, although the skills she showed off were no doubt impressive. If only the auditions still had a choreography round, we could have gotten a fuller picture of Sarah’s abilities — but alas, that seems to be gone for good, despite my attempts to wish it back into existence.

3 | Matthew Deloch (Contemporary) — Not even a torn meniscus could keep Matthew away from SYTYCD — nor would you ever know he had a previous injury if he hadn’t said something. Matthew seemed to pour all of himself into this routine, hitting crazy heights with his jetés and whirling through beautiful pirouettes with ease. It’s possible that Matthew could get lost in a sea of stunning contemporary dancers as the season continues — they’re not exactly unicorns on this show — but he certainly made an impression this time around.

2 | Gino Cosculluela (Contemporary) — This former Dance Moms star didn’t have the most inventive choreography in the world, but he more than made up for it with the pure, aching emotion he brought to every step of his audition. Performed to the bittersweet song “For All We Know,” Gino’s routine was full of such tenderness and sincerity, proving he can embody the mood and character of a dance as well as he can execute the steps. Assuming he survives the Academy, I’m really looking forward to seeing what else he can do. (Also, it’s probably a good thing for Gino that Maddie Ziegler is no longer on the judging panel.)

1 | Dezi Saenz (Hip-Hop) — Dezi looked mighty nervous in the moments leading up to Nigel’s “Cue music” — but once the routine began, this 18-year-old was a beast. Dezi used every part of her body as she popped and locked her way through the season’s first tryout, throwing in some insane chest isolations that even Terry Crews would envy. Of course, it’s always hard to tell if a hip-hop dancer can pull off other styles, so we’ll have to see how the Academy treats Dezi a few weeks from now. But after an audition this powerful, I suspect she could be the show’s next Comfort Fedoke or Jaja Vankova.

SYTYCD Season 15 Premiere Recap: Which Auditions Blew You Away? https://briefnews.eu/sytycd-season-15-premiere-recap-which-auditions-blew-you-away/ https://briefnews.eu/sytycd-season-15-premiere-recap-which-auditions-blew-you-away/#respond Tue, 05 Jun 2018 12:42:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sytycd-season-15-premiere-recap-which-auditions-blew-you-away/

So You Think You Can Dance returned for its 15th season on Monday night, and the premiere had everything you might expect from the Fox reality competition: Contestants’ emotional backstories! Mary Murphy’s elated shrieks! Nigel Lythgoe’s creepy ogling of the female dancers! Ah, there’s nothing like tradition.

The Season 15 premiere also featured a string of impressive auditions, including a dancer or two that could very well be standing in the finale at the end of the summer. Let’s break down the Los Angeles tryouts that earned a trip to The Academy, from least to most impressive:
