Dates can go very wrong in horror movies. Carrie White’s prom date with Tommy Ross goes up in flames before the last dance, in both Stephen King’s novel “Carrie” and Brian De Palma’s film adaptation. In Sean Byrne’s Aussie horror movie “The Loved Ones,” poor Brett doesn’t even make it to his school dance after rejecting Lola, who hosts a macabre dance of her own. All grotesqueries of romantic relationships find screen time in the genre.
So when Takashi Miike signed on to adapt Ryū Murakami’s 1997 novel “Audition,” he picked up on its themes of voyeurism, sexism, and exploitation in the entertainment industry — its leading man Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) holds a shady “audition” for his next wife, launching the story’s events into motion — but left its nastiest moments for the finale, long after audience is embedded into the mysterious allure of Aoyama’s chosen bride, Asami Yamazaki (Eihi Shiina). Wielding needles, drug cocktails, and a wire saw, Asami proves to be a jealous lover who’ll take her rage out on the flesh of any man that crosses her.
Speaking with SyFy, the legendary director delivered some clarity on the architecture of “Audition” and its strategic placement of violence:
“The way that film is structured… it starts as one thing and it slowly breaks down into something different. When we start to focus on her private life the film starts breaking down. It takes about an hour for that to happen. There’s a point in a film where people will decide if they will leave the theater or if they want to stay and continue watching the movie. We intentionally made a film where it seems to completely break down and goes in a completely different direction. We structured it that way because we felt it worked very well for that film.”

Miike isn’t kidding when he says that his adaptation starts as one thing and gradually ends up another. “Audition” begins like a cringey rom-com, with the widower Aoyama posing as a movie producer to meet prospective new partners. A sweet young victor emerges from the process, and it’s all fun and games until a massive human-sized bag starts writhing in her apartment. Aoyama’s post-audition phone call cuts through the eerie stillness in the strange girl’s room where she is unnaturally hunched over, seemingly awaiting that very call for days. The bag that moves in the background is responsible for one of the greatest jump scares in horror movie history — number 11, according to Bravo’s The 100 Scariest Movie Moments. It reveals Asami’s unstable mental state, which comes to a head in the movie’s horrifying climax.
Without getting into the gruesome specifics, Asami unveils herself to be a volatile woman whose traumatic childhood fomented a rather unhealthy connection between love and pain. In stark contrast to the restraint of the rest of the movie’s 113 minute runtime, the last 20-odd minutes are a parade of violations across home, family, and flesh. The bravest of the brave can try to stomach a clip of the sequence here (here there be spoilers):
Fans and critics are divided in their interpretations of the footloose finale: are the torturous sequences the result of Aoyama’s misogynist nightmares, or is the story a cautionary feminist tale of vengeance? Whatever it is, it’ll keep you up at night.

Ant was left speechless by Japanese star Mr Uekusa, who described himself as an “international variety performer”.
Mr Uekusa certainly ensured the judges and audience were given a show to remember as he stripped completely naked during his audition.
As he demonstrated a number of stunts in his Britain’s Got Talent audition, he went on to flash his bare bottom.
He could be seen baring his naked body, only just covering his modesty with a silky red cloth.
Mr Uekusa went on to place tea cups on top of the sheet before whipping it away.
His nipples and penis were only just covered by the saucers as he lay on the stage.
Shocked by what he was watching, Ant could be seen covering his face with his arms.
The 42-year-old then turned to his co-host Declan Donnelly to laugh at the racy audition.
It wasn’t just the presenters who were left stunned by the act.
Judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams were also shocked by Mr Uekusa’s naked antics.
Fans of the ITV show will have to wait until Saturday evening to find out if the Japanese star made it through to the next stage of the competition.
However, it’s safe to say that he certainly made an impression with his daring act.
Tomorrow night’s episode will also see professional circus performer Sascha Williams leave the judges on the edge of their seat.
He will perform his dangerous Rola Bola act, which sees him try to balance on a teeter board several feet in the air.
And, daredevil Matt Johnson tries to escape a locked water tank.
Ahead of the return of Britain’s Got Talent, judge Simon opened up about fans can expect from the new series.
He teased: “We have real potential this year, I will say that.
“But it’s not their first audition, it’s what they do in their second audition that counts.
“It’s not just the talent, it’s them as people which makes a big difference.”
Britain’s Got Talent airs Saturday on ITV at 8pm.
Following 1985’s A View To A Kill, Sir Roger Moore bowed out as James Bond for the final time after seven movies.
The hunt was on for the fourth official actor to play 007 in 1987’s The Living Daylights.
While Dalton was eventually cast, future Jurassic Park star Neill auditioned, but he’s now really glad he wasn’t cast.
Speaking with the Financial Times, Neill said bluntly: “I dodged a bullet that was never fired.”
He imagined: “You’d walk into a room and people would say ‘that is the James Bond I never liked.’”
Earlier this month Neill described his 007 audition as “a bad dream.”
The 70-year-old said: “No. Don’t ask! It was all a bad dream.
“The lesson I learnt that day was never be bullied by your agent into going along to something you don’t want to do ever again. That was the last time.”
Neill added: “And without naming names, some of the people who have been our hotel for the last couple of days, there is no money on earth that could compensate me for the lives they have to live.
“There are guests on my corridor with six security guards outside their door. Six! And those are the people they now live with.
“When you get there, you’ve lost all semblance of life. So I’m very comfortable with whatever career that I have. Because it’s permitted me great privilege with very little loss.”
Oh hi, Batman. It’s your worst nightmare.
The Room star/director/writer/producer is a multi-hyphenate of his own making, but Tommy Wiseau wants to add one more title to that list: Joker. The Hollywood curiosity has been repeatedly campaigning for the role in Warner Bros.’ DC movies for months. And now, he finally gets to live his dream — sort of.
Ever since news of a Joker origin movie was announced, Wiseau has been heavily hinting to Warner Bros. and the internet that he would really, really like the part. And his fans heard his call, even mocking up a fake trailer starring Wiseau as the Clown Prince of Crime. Now, Wiseau stepped in front of the camera to audition for Batman’s biggest nemesis.
Wiseau has been a beloved figure in the cult movie circuit for years, after his sincerely terrible 2003 film The Room was declared an ingenious oddity. Now, fresh off the critical and commercial success of James Franco‘s The Disaster Artist, a true-life comedy about which Wiseau and The Room, Wiseau is ready for another close-up.
Unfortunately, Wiseau’s Mr. DeMille is just the Nerdist staff and the audition tape is just for laughs. But hey, it’s fun to dream, right?
Honestly, the audition tape is incredibly fun, with Wiseau clearly giving his all during his performance. He screams, he flounders, and he’s genuinely terrifying. But in a “what is this guy capable of?” kind of way. The tape becomes even more hilarious when Wiseau’s longtime friend and The Room co-star Greg Sestero steps in front of the camera as Batman. Sestero co-wrote The Disaster Artist memoir upon which the movie is based.
The two of them recite lines from The Dark Knight — Sestero doing a whispery imitation of Bale’s Batman voice — and generally have a great time. It’s a bizarrely enjoyable video that probably won’t reach the mailboxes of Warner Bros. executives, but it’s all in good fun. Plus the two of them get to promote their upcoming reunion movie Best F(r)iends.
So does Tommy have a chance of becoming the Joker? Probably not, since the standalone prequel has already seemingly cast Joaquin Phoenix. But Jared Leto had better watch his back.

Back in 1986 Sir Roger Moore had retired as James Bond after starring in seven movies.
MGM were holding 007 auditions for 1987’s The Living Daylights, which eventually went to Timothy Dalton.
And one actor who impressed the producers but just missed out was Kiki actor Sam Neill.
Now in a new interview with the Daily Telegraph, Neill has spoken out on that audition – calling it “a bad dream.”
The 70-year-old Jurassic Park star said: “No. Don’t ask! It was all a bad dream.
“The lesson I learnt that day was never be bullied by your agent into going along to something you don’t want to do ever again. That was the last time.”
Meanwhile Neill’s main reason for not wanting to be Bond was because he wanted to avoid the movie star lifestyle.
He continued: “And it’s been really interesting being here at the film festival – my friend and I Bryan Brown, we can go into Venice and do whatever we want. We can live a life.”
He’s James Norton, latterly of Granchester, Happy Valley and War And Peace. OK, he doesn’t quite have the much sought-after film role (yet) as incumbent Daniel Craig is doing one more movie, but he has done a spectacularly good audition for the British spy character in his latest TV outing, called McMafia.
In it, he flashes his torso, wears a tuxedo and beats up assailants with cool efficiency; he looks neither shaken, nor stirred.
The first two episodes of the Russian gangster/oligarch drama go out tomorrow and Tuesday but what exactly is ‘McMafia’?
It’s not a Scottish outlaw. It’s actually the title of a book written by former BBC correspondent Misha Glenny in 2006 who says the term is similar to a “McJob” and was applied to the Chechen mafia during that period. Any notions about their inadequacy have been disproven over time, with accusations now of money laundering, racketeering, extortion and arms trafficking.
Glenny believes his book has been prophetic. “Ten years later on, it couldn’t be more timely because everybody now knows that this is going on under our very noses, and indeed at the very heart of Washington DC.”

Alex (James Norton) finds his safe world turned upside down
There is a brutality and ruthlessness of Russian/Chechen organised crime seen in this drama that will leave you breathless, drawn as it is from real-life figures in the book. The gangsters won’t have any difficulty in seeing themselves in this adaptation. Nor will Barbara Broccoli have much difficulty in judging whether Norton would make a good Bond.
“I warned [the director] James Watkins,” says Norton, “and [the screenwriter] Hossein Amini that, if they wrote the first scene as me getting out of a cab in a tux, they might stir some of it.
“Personally, I’m very thankful Daniel Craig is going to do at least one more film, two or five, I’m a big fan of his.”
As you were for now. But he’s certainly getting into shape. Norton, 32, Alex Godman, in the drama. He undertook classes in the Russian martial art “systema” for the eight-part series.
He says: “I went to these classes run by this amazingly eccentric man called David, whom I became very close to. The first thing he said to me was ‘The thing about English people, when they meet fear they run away; in Russia we meet fear, we shake him by the ****ing hand!’. I had hours of this man punching me. It’s all about taking the pain and relaxing through it. It was terrifying.”
The drama has many of the qualities that made The Night Manager such a big hit, this time two years ago. For Hiddleston read Norton. It also has glamorous locations (12 in all), desirable-ish characters who can’t help being villainous, car chases and bomb blasts. It’s big budget too, with backing from BBC, Amazon, and AMC, an American channel, so it looks, according to Norton, “like an eight-hour movie”.
But what of his central character? He is complex. “Alex Godman”, explains Norton, “is the son of Russian parents who were exiled from Moscow. He’s a young hedge fund manager living in London with his beautiful girlfriend Rebecca. He’s spent most of his life turning his back on his mafia past and establishing himself in the world of finance. Over the course of the show, for various reasons, he’s forced to confront his past and the show is his story as he delves deeper and deeper into that criminal underworld.”
This involves meeting a top organised crime boss in Israel who makes it impossible for Alex to avoid more nefarious activities.
While Norton doesn’t immediately strike you as a “method actor”, he has used some similar techniques. “I did this bizarre thing where I spent time as Alex doing really mundane stuff, such as buying milk or brushing my teeth, in his headspace with his demons, his conflicts, desires and passions. It meant when I was on set and they called action, the headspace became quickly familiar to me.
“I think it freaked people out when I walked about as a schizophrenic Russian banker and then would go back to being me but that’s my process!” He adds: “One day I would go to their shops as me and the next day I’d be someone really different. I have a theory that as an actor you should love the person you are playing, however abhorrent their actions might be. Alex is a good man, certainly at the beginning of the show, and sees the best in people. As the story goes on, certain demons emerge and that’s what I had to understand and was part of the challenge – not just understanding but loving him despite his faults.”

James Norton has been tipped to be the next James Bond
The drama doesn’t flinch at controversy. As it opens there’s a discussion between Alex and his father Boris about who may have killed Princess Diana and Dodi. Conspiracy theorists will be delighted.
One great challenge on set for the director was that the cast spoke two languages, Russian and English. In the drama, Russian is spoken but subtitled, including that uttered by Norton.
“It was a surprise when they mentioned I’d need to speak it. Alex speaks it badly as his parents are both Russian but he moved to the UK when he was nine, so he has a grasp but doesn’t speak it well. It was fun to play with, particularly in regards to his relationship with his father where they were sometimes speaking two different languages. I had a few Russian lines and I learned them phonetically with the Russian translators on set. It’s a beautiful language even though I had no idea what I was saying!” Norton believes it’s not just the palatial houses, champagne and caviar that will appeal to audiences.
“I think McMafia is unique,” he says, “because it’s a story about the mafia and there is something compelling and timeless about organised crime which makes great drama. The mafia has changed, particularly since the fall of the Soviet Union: it’s become a globalised corporation essentially. McMafia tells the story of the sexy side of the mafia which people are attracted to but also the cost of the lavish lifestyle, how it’s paid for and who pays for it.

James Norton starring as Alex Godman in McMafia
“The most important asset, though, is it’s a great story. Alex is sucked into this dark twisted criminal underworld and you desperately want him to turn around but as is often the case with good drama he makes bad choices along the way.
He believes we’re afraid to confront this dark world. But when you watch the drama you will understand why.
“I hadn’t read Misha Glenny’s book before I got the role but that was an eye opener. I was amazed and disturbed. It’s so pertinent and it’s an important conversation to have.”
It will also have you transfixed for eight hours if the first episode is any guide.
McMafia, BBC One, Monday and Tuesday, 9pm
The actress claimed that the powerful director “humiliated” her on purpose.
Gilbert is still most famous as little Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wildersaid on Little House on the Prairie but reported a sordid scene a million miles away from that wholesome show.
She said she was left “in tears” after being forced to perform simulated graphic sexual acts in a scene created purely to enact a terrible form of revenge for a previous slight.
The audition was for the outrageous 1991 movie biopic The Doors starring Val Kilmer and involved “Gilbert crawling around on her hands and knees begging Kilmer’s character for sex, saying ‘Do me, baby.'”
Gilbert appeared on Andy Cohen’s radio show Radio Andy and made her sensational accusations as Hollywood continues to be rocked with numerous allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse following the accusations made against Harvey Weinstein.
She said: ““I never really talked about it — and it was all because I had said something and embarrassed him publicly. He (Stone) wrote this special scene that he wanted me to do for him physically in the casting room, and it was humiliating and horrid.”
Apparently the director felt Gilbert had previously embarrassed him in a nightclub and used the opportunity for revenge. She added: “He got me back and it hurt.”
PAMELA ANDERSON: ‘HARVEY WEINSTEIN CALLED ME A F***ING B**** BECAUSE I REFUSED TO DO THIS ON FILM’
The scene described did not appear in the final cut, when Meg Ryan played the part of Doors frontman Jim Morrison’s girlfriend, Pamela Courson.
This appears to lend credence to Gilbert’s claims that the moment was engineered purely to punish and hurt her.
However, a version of the original script available online does contain the scene. This backs Stone’s rebuttal that no such scene was written purely for Gilbert’s audition.
In an official statement Oliver Stone replied to the accusation: “We auditioned dozens of actors for roles in The Doors and it was made clear from the outset that our film was going to be a raunchy, no-holds-barred rock ‘n’ roll movie.
“Anyone auditioning was told the scenes would be rehearsed and performed from a script, with my casting director, Risa Bramon Garcia, present throughout the process to ensure a safe environment for all actors who auditioned.”

“Little House on the Prairie” star Melissa Gilbert says she understands the power dynamic that’s fueling today’s numerous accounts of sexual misconduct in Hollywood. She alleges that Oliver Stone used a sexually-charged audition to get revenge on her for disparaging remarks she made about him in public.
“There were moments where there were men in more powerful positions, one in particular, who humiliated me at one point in an audition, and unnecessarily, because I had embarrassed him in a social situation,” she said Monday on SiriusXM radio show “Andy Cohen Live.” “He got back at me, and I ran out of the room crying. I’m actually sitting here telling you this story afraid to say his name because I’m worried about backlash.”
Gilbert said the incident occurred while she was auditioning for 1991’s “The Doors” movie. Stone told her he had a “special scene” he wanted her to read with an actor in order to see their chemistry.
She then explained, “The whole scene was just my character on her hands and knees saying, ‘Do me, baby.’ Really dirty, horrible. Then he said, ‘I’d like you to stage it for me.'”
Gilbert said she refused to physically act out the scene and left the audition.
“I left crying, and I never really talked about it,” she told Cohen. “It was all because I had said something and embarrassed him publicly.”
After telling the story, Gilbert finally named the director: ‘F— it, it was Oliver Stone and it was ‘The Doors’ movie.
Representatives for Stone didn’t immediately respond to INSIDER’s request for comment.
Gilbert’s account of the power dynamic abused by men in Hollywood is just the latest in a string of allegations surfacing. Many notable Hollywood figures including the actors Kevin Spacey and Ed Westwick have been accused of sexual misconduct ranging from harassment to rape since an October 5 New York Times exposé detailed allegations going back decades against the Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
