Google can do basically whatever it wants regarding video and web standards. YouTube is the world’s most popular video site. Chrome is the world’s most popular browser. Android is the world’s most popular operating system. Anything Google wants to roll out can immediately have a sizable user base of clients, servers, and content. From there, it’s just a matter of getting a few partners to tag along. This is how Google’s next-generation AV1 video codec is being rolled out, and next, Google is setting its sights on HDR and 3D audio standards.

Protocol’s Janko Roettgers has a report on “Project Caviar,” Google’s plan to take on Dolby and create royalty-free alternatives to its HDR standard (Dolby Vision) and its 3D audio standard (Dolby Atmos). Dolby’s old-media business model relies on royalty fees from hardware manufacturers and support from content creators. The company’s technology is deeply embedded in movie theaters, Blu-rays, and more modern streaming companies like Apple are big backers of Dolby technology. That all costs money, though, and Protocol’s report says $ 50 streaming sticks end up having around $ 2 of that price tag go to Dolby.

Surround sound has been a movie feature forever with various numbers of front, back, and side speakers, but Dolby Atmos adds height into the equation. If you take a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup—that’s three front speakers, two back, a subwoofer, and for 7.1, two side speakers—Dolby Atmos adds four overhead speakers into the mix, allowing sound to pan overhead of the viewer. Atmos is supported by Apple, Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+.

Doctor Who: John Hurt’s iconic War Doctor ‘recast’ for new Time Lord audio series https://briefnews.eu/doctor-who-john-hurts-iconic-war-doctor-recast-for-new-time-lord-audio-series/ https://briefnews.eu/doctor-who-john-hurts-iconic-war-doctor-recast-for-new-time-lord-audio-series/#respond Fri, 16 Oct 2020 02:50:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/doctor-who-john-hurts-iconic-war-doctor-recast-for-new-time-lord-audio-series/

Doctor Who has long been a fan-favourite, rebooted with spin-offs left right and centre, bringing with them a whole host of celebrity characters viewers are eager to see fight off alien threats. One stark character fans were impressed by is the War Doctor, who made a shock appearance in the series seven finale The Name of the Doctor, when the Eleventh Doctor (played by Matt Smith) and companion Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman) are trapped in the timeline.

Portrayed by the late John Hurt on-screen in 2013, the Time Lord’s “missing” incarnation brought much mystery to the show, which was later explored in an audio series where the actor reprised his role.

But since his passing in 2017 from pancreatic cancer aged 77, the character has now been recast, as the prequel featuring the War Doctor’s younger self is set for release next year.

This particular incarnation was introduced by former writer Steven Moffat, as a secret version of The Doctor that came between number Eight and Nine, who embraced violence to fight against the Daleks in the Time War.

Now, Jonathon Carley is said to be taking over the role and will make his debut when the tapes become available in June 2021.

Of his appointment, he said: “I honestly can’t tell you how much of a privilege and an honour it is to not only be working with the incredibly talented team at Big Finish but also to be playing the War Doctor.

“It is more than I could ever have expected.

“Stepping into the sturdy boots of a character established by the late, great Sir John Hurt would be a challenge for any actor. But the team have been so supportive and creative in their approach to exploring further facets of this complex incarnation.”

He teased the upcoming audio files aren’t ones to miss.

“This is a cracking set of stories so it will be wonderful to put a spotlight on the rarely glimpsed early life of the War Doctor and the trials he faces, finding his new place in the Time War.

“I worked really closely with John Hurt on our original The War Doctor releases, and although we only worked together for a short time, such was his commitment, charm and openness that he allowed me to feel something of a connection with him. And I can confidently say that what Jonathon is doing here will be a fitting tribute to John, in honour of his great work in the role,” he told Radio Times.

Elsewhere in the Whoniverse, rumours are running rife that Bradley Walsh‘s character Graham O’Brien, is bowing out of the BBC show as the upcoming festive special brings with it a whole lot of drama.

Various sources have suggested that the episode The Revolution of the Daleks, will end with a grim demise for poor Graham, but BBC and the actor are yet to speak out about his fate.

If the rumours are correct and Graham’s departure is imminent, could he fall victim to their biggest enemy?

Fox News' Tucker Carlson Foregoes 'Contrition' After Offensive, Years-Old Radio Call-In Audio Surfaces https://briefnews.eu/fox-news-tucker-carlson-foregoes-contrition-after-offensive-years-old-radio-call-in-audio-surfaces/ https://briefnews.eu/fox-news-tucker-carlson-foregoes-contrition-after-offensive-years-old-radio-call-in-audio-surfaces/#respond Mon, 11 Mar 2019 06:15:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fox-news-tucker-carlson-foregoes-contrition-after-offensive-years-old-radio-call-in-audio-surfaces/

Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson is choosing to forego “the usual contrition” after audio surfaced of him making offensive remarks during a radio call-ins from years ago.

During call-ins to the Bubble the Love Sponge shock jock radio program, which took place between 2006 and 2011 and were brought to light on Sunday by Media Matters — an organization that “pushes back on right-wing misinformation, hypocrisy and smears” — Carlson refers to Martha Stewart’s daughter, Alexis Stewart, as “c–ty”; calls Arianna Huffington a “pig”; and labels Britney Spears and Paris Hilton “the biggest white whores in America.”

Carlson also says that women are “extremely primitive” and enjoy being told to “be quiet and kind of do what you’re told.”

He also minimizes the crimes of then-Most Wanted fugitive Warren Jeffs, who arranged illegal marriages between his adult male followers in the FLDS Church and underage girls in Utah. “[A]rranging a marriage between a 16-year-old and a 27-year-old is not the same as pulling a stranger off the street and raping her,” he says on the tape. “That’s bullsh–t.”

Hours after the audio surfaced, Carlson said on Twitter that he would forego the apology that public figures confronted with past indiscretions typically offer up. Instead, he invited anyone who disagrees with his views as expressed these days on TV to come challenge him on Tucker Carlson Tonight.

Listen to the sky: NASA reveals the sound of wind on Mars (AUDIO) https://briefnews.eu/listen-to-the-sky-nasa-reveals-the-sound-of-wind-on-mars-audio/ https://briefnews.eu/listen-to-the-sky-nasa-reveals-the-sound-of-wind-on-mars-audio/#respond Fri, 07 Dec 2018 21:04:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/listen-to-the-sky-nasa-reveals-the-sound-of-wind-on-mars-audio/

For the first time, humans can hear the sound of wind on Mars thanks to a new NASA spacecraft that touched down on the Red Planet ten days ago.

NASA’s new tool – the Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport – aka ‘InSight’ touched down on Mars on November 26.

On December 1, InSight sensors captured a haunting low rumble caused by vibrations from the wind, estimated to be blowing between 10 to 15 mph (16 to 24 kph). The winds were consistent with the direction of dust devil streaks in the landing area, which were observed from orbit, NASA reports.

What’s even more exciting about InSight’s fascinating discovery is that the NASA team were not even planning on capturing the previously unheard wind.

“Capturing this audio was an unplanned treat,” said InSight principal investigator, Bruce Banerdt. “But one of the things our mission is dedicated to is measuring motion on Mars, and naturally that includes motion caused by sound waves.”

The wind vibrations were detected by two sensitive sensors on the InSight spacecraft: an air pressure sensor inside the lander and a seismometer sitting on the lander’s deck.

InSight will act as a giant ear on Mars that will measure any sound or pressure fluctuations of the wind, earthquakes, tectonic movement or volcanism. However NASA promise an even clearer sound of the Red Planet is coming with the Mars 2020 rover that will have two microphones on board.

The rover will, for the first time, record the sound of its own landing. It will also record the sound of the instrument’s laser as it zaps different materials, helping to identify the material based on the sound it makes.

This Brooklyn-based audio company’s new Bluetooth headphones are easily the best way to spend $250 https://briefnews.eu/this-brooklyn-based-audio-companys-new-bluetooth-headphones-are-easily-the-best-way-to-spend-250/ https://briefnews.eu/this-brooklyn-based-audio-companys-new-bluetooth-headphones-are-easily-the-best-way-to-spend-250/#respond Wed, 31 Oct 2018 10:30:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-brooklyn-based-audio-companys-new-bluetooth-headphones-are-easily-the-best-way-to-spend-250/ The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you’ll like. Grado Gw100Grado

  • Grado just released its first Bluetooth headphones in its 65 year career. They’re called the GW100s, and they cost $ 250.
  • They retain the company’s trademark open-back design, which makes music sound incredibly clear and natural, like you’re listening to music through speakers. The downside is that sound leaks in and out, but not too much.
  • I was extremely impressed at how great the GW100s sounded given their price. Music was clear and detailed, although a little treble heavy. Live music stood out in particular.
  • My only complaint about these headphones is that they have a Micro USB port. You’ll want to keep these headphones for years, and most high-end tech is moving over to charging on USB-C.
  • If you have $ 250 and want an audiophile-worthy pair of headphones, Grado’s GW100s are your best bet.

For 65 years, Grado’s headphones have shared many of the same features: they’re all handmade in Brooklyn, have an open-back design, and use a thick, long cable.

Waze adds built-in audio player to spice up your commute https://briefnews.eu/waze-adds-built-in-audio-player-to-spice-up-your-commute/ https://briefnews.eu/waze-adds-built-in-audio-player-to-spice-up-your-commute/#respond Mon, 29 Oct 2018 23:34:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/waze-adds-built-in-audio-player-to-spice-up-your-commute/

You won’t have to use Google Maps if you want a built-in music player to accompany Google’s navigation tools. In the wake of a Spotify tie-in last year, Waze has released beta versions of its Android and iOS apps with a native audio player that supports eight services in total. Deezer, iHeart Radio, NPR One, Pandora, Scribd, Stitcher and TuneIn are now available alongside Spotify to give you a choice of listening material for your commute. Not every app is available on every platform (you can use TuneIn only on Android, for example, while Deezer only works on iOS), but you only need to sync Waze with a third-party app to have access to familiar tunes on your next drive.

The feature should reach the standard Waze apps “in the coming weeks.”

You’ll still need to turn to Google Maps if you want to play Apple Music or Google Play Music during your commute. If that’s not an issue, though, this might be an ideal commuting companion. You’ll get Waze’s crowdsourced traffic alerts alongside the music, radio and podcasts you might need to make the trip vaguely bearable.

Teenage Engineering reluctantly adds Bluetooth audio to OD-11 speaker https://briefnews.eu/teenage-engineering-reluctantly-adds-bluetooth-audio-to-od-11-speaker/ https://briefnews.eu/teenage-engineering-reluctantly-adds-bluetooth-audio-to-od-11-speaker/#respond Sun, 14 Oct 2018 09:02:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/teenage-engineering-reluctantly-adds-bluetooth-audio-to-od-11-speaker/

For years, Teenage Engineering has chosen not to allow its users to stream music via Bluetooth to its flagship OD-11 speakers. And that’s despite it actually having a Bluetooth radio inside. The Swedish engineers have finally, reluctantly, given in and users can simply download a software update for their speaker to enable it.

Weirdly, the OD-11 has supported Bluetooth 4.0 since its initial launch back in 2013 — it just wouldn’t allow you to play your music that way. Instead, it was meant solely to connect to Teenage Engineering’s ortho remote — a wireless volume knob that has a couple of basic control buttons on it.

Turning on Bluetooth won’t stop the OD-11 from being every bit the audio stand out that it always has been. The company has just finally buckled to user demands and has unlocked a feature that could have been available since day one. However, it alerted users of the feature by sending out an email of a sad engineer and warned that Bluetooth makes the speaker sound “a little less perfect.” But for $ 999, it’s the least it could do.

Yamaha’s latest turntable streams multi-room audio via WiFi https://briefnews.eu/yamahas-latest-turntable-streams-multi-room-audio-via-wifi/ https://briefnews.eu/yamahas-latest-turntable-streams-multi-room-audio-via-wifi/#respond Fri, 31 Aug 2018 22:32:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/yamahas-latest-turntable-streams-multi-room-audio-via-wifi/

You can pair a turntable with a multi-room audio setup (Sonos even offers a bundle), but that usually means wiring your record player into that setup at some point. Yamaha thinks it can do better. Its newly launched MusicCast Vinyl 500 turntable uses WiFi to stream records wirelessly to MusicCast speakers in your home. If you don’t insist on that distinctive vinyl sound, the machine will natively stream digital services like Spotify, Pandora and Tidal.

The player also doubles as an audio target for AirPlay, Spotify Connect and Bluetooth devices, and you can steer both online services and multi-room playback through Alexa voice commands.

You can buy the MusicCast Vinyl 500 in September for $ 700 without speakers — steep, but potentially worth it to hear your LPs around the home. You can cut costs if you don’t mind plugging into a MusicCast receiver, though. The TT-S303 turntable will offer the same basic record-playing features without the wireless technology for a more down-to-Earth $ 450.

Democratic Congressional candidate says Trump is like Bin Laden – audio recording https://briefnews.eu/democratic-congressional-candidate-says-trump-is-like-bin-laden-audio-recording/ https://briefnews.eu/democratic-congressional-candidate-says-trump-is-like-bin-laden-audio-recording/#respond Fri, 31 Aug 2018 06:35:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/democratic-congressional-candidate-says-trump-is-like-bin-laden-audio-recording/ A recording in which an Illinois Democrat running for Congress appears to say US President Donald Trump and Al-Qaeda founder Osama Bin Laden have “a tremendous amount in common,” has been made public.

Sean Casten, who hopes to replace Republican Peter Roskam, currently representing Illinois’ 6th district in the federal legislature, made the staggering claim about supposed similarities between Trump and Bin Laden’s success during a meet-up with voters in February. However, the recording only surfaced on Wednesday, published by Washington Free Beacon with the campaign for the congressional seat in full swing.

Casten was talking to a voter, discussing the measures he would take to fight gun violence, when he made the bizarre comparison. The audience, from what can be heard on the recording, didn’t seem to mind the parallel.

“In many ways — and I don’t mean to sound overly, I don’t know, hyperbolic on this — Trump and Osama Bin Laden have a tremendous amount in common,” Casten can be heard saying. He then goes on to elaborate on what exactly he believed those similarities to be: their base of support and how they acquire it.

“Because they have both figured out how to use the bully pulpit to activate marginalized young men. It’s the same pool. Every demagogue has done this — find a group of angry people and give them something to be angry at,” the politician adds.

Casten has not come out with a comment on the leaked audio so far.

Trump’s opponents in the so-called Democratic resistance are often quick with similarly vivid parallels. Trump, who once took credit for defeating the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorist group, has been compared to terrorists before. Last February, Whoopi Goldberg compared the Trump administration’s values to those of the Taliban, when criticizing the US president’s questionable record on his treatment of women.

In January, London Mayor and outspoken Trump critic Sadiq Khan caused uproar after stating that Trump’s language was “very similar to the rhetoric used by the so-called ISIS/Daesh.” In fairness, Khan was referring particularly to Trump retweeting Islamophobic videos from the account of the deputy leader of the far-right group, Britain First. Trump later claimed he was unaware what Britain First was and promised to apologize if asked to do so.

AUDIO emerges of conversation between Seattle hijacker & air traffic controller https://briefnews.eu/audio-emerges-of-conversation-between-seattle-hijacker-air-traffic-controller/ https://briefnews.eu/audio-emerges-of-conversation-between-seattle-hijacker-air-traffic-controller/#respond Sat, 11 Aug 2018 13:40:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/audio-emerges-of-conversation-between-seattle-hijacker-air-traffic-controller/

An audio emerged online of a conversation between a man who hijacked a plane from the Seattle Airport and an air-traffic controller. On the clip the hijacker talks about running low on fuel and asks if he’ll get life in jail.

The conversation between the man, addressed as Rich/Richard, and the air-traffic controller right before the Horizon Air Q400 plane crash, was released by Aviation journalist Jon Ostrower on Twitter.

At some point the man starts to worry about the fuel. “I’m down to 2,100 (pounds),” he is heard saying. “I started at 30 something… I don’t know what the burnage is like on takeoff, but it burned quite a bit faster than I expected.”

The air controller tells him there is a runway just off to his right “in about a mile [1.6km],” referring to a military airfield at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. “Oh man,” Rich says, “those guys will rough me up if I try and land there. I think I might mess something up there too. I wouldn’t want to do that. They probably have anti-aircraft.” The controller responds that the authorities were “just trying to find a place for you to land safely.”

“I’m not quite ready to bring it down just yet,” Richard said. “But holy smokes, I got to stop looking at the fuel, because it’s going down quick.”

The man seemed to understand that his actions would have dire consequences. “This is probably jail time for life, huh? I would hope it is for a guy like me,” he said.

Richard then says he feels like one of the engines “is going out or something.” The controller replies: “If you could, you just want to keep that plane right over the water. Keep the aircraft nice and low.”

The man, described by police as a 29-year-old mechanic, says that he has a lot of people that care about him. “It’s going to disappoint them to hear that I did this. I would like to apologize to each and every one of them. Just a broken guy, got a few screws loose, I guess. Never really knew it, until now,” he added.

North American Aerospace Defense Command scrambled two F-15 fighter jets to deal with the Horizon Air plane. While the jets were in pursuit of the small plane, air traffic control helped the rogue plane stay clear of the Seattle cosmopolitan area.

The Pierce County sheriff said that the perpetrator acted alone and “was confirmed a suicidal male.” He stressed that it was not a terrorism-related incident.

On Saturday morning, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told media that President Donald Trump was briefed on the incident and is currently “monitoring the situation” in Seattle.

Independent aviation expert Gerry Soejatman told RT that employees of air companies should be vetted more thoroughly. “This is what we call the inside risk,” he said, explaining that the security measures should not only be aimed at passengers, but also at employees. “People need to realize that flying an aircraft is not hard, flying it correctly is the hard part.”
