Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) speaks during the America First Agenda Summit, at the Marriott Marquis hotel July 26, 2022 in Washington, DC.

  • Ted Cruz was met with a booing audience when he said his plan to stop school shootings is putting more police in schools.
  • Cruz commented on gun control efforts and the Uvalde school shooting at the Texas Tribune Festival.
  • A responsive audience jeered at Cruz at some points, demanding age restrictions on assault weapons.

Sen. Ted Cruz was met with boos from a Texas audience when he said that his plan to combat school shootings is placing more police officers in schools.

Cruz spoke about guns and other contentious topics at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Saturday, where he was met with a responsive audience.

"Whenever you have a mass murder … you have Democrats in Washington, the step they immediately go to is we need to take away firearms from law-abiding citizens," Cruz said, prompting sparse applause. "OK, you can clap for that except for the minor problem that it doesn't work. If the objective is to stop these crimes, gun control is singularly ineffective."

Cruz argued that gun control measures punish "law-abiding citizens" instead of criminals, though the audience seemed to disagree with him at some points.

"If you want to stop crime," Cruz said, "you target the bad guys. You target the criminals, the felons, the fugitives. You prosecute them, you put them in jail, you get them off the streets, and you also enhance security at vulnerable targets."

Cruz has made similar comments before in defense of the National Rifle Association, which he said "stands up for the rights of every American," Business Insider previously reported. Cruz has received the most donations from gun rights groups among other Texas lawmakers, according to Axios.

"Two weeks ago, I stood on the Senate floor and tried to pass legislation I've introduced that would double the number of police officers in school," Cruz said to a crowd of boos. "If we want to keep our kids safe, and I desperately want to keep our kids safe, the most effective step we can do is to have police officers there to protect them who can intercept a mass murderer before he gets into the school and stop them."

Cruz was met with more yells from the audience, this time specifically about the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in May that left 19 elementary schoolers and two teachers dead. A total of 376 law enforcement officers responded to the shooting, though the gunman remained at large for over an hour. An interim report on the police response found that responding officers "failed to prioritize saving the lives of innocent victims over their own safety," Insider previously reported.

Cruz said that the Uvalde shooter was successful in his efforts because he was able to get into the school through an unlocked door, but members of the audience continued to yell back at him.

"Look, if you have a solution to stop the deranged evil murderers, I'd love to hear it. My solution is to throw them in jail," Cruz said. "Stop them before they commit these crimes. There are some we won't know about beforehand, and the single best step to stop them is to have armed officers on campus that can stop them before they kill our kids."

"But look, instead you guys can instead sing kumbaya with them and hope they'll just stop, but what you're proposing doesn't work," Cruz added.

"Eighteen-year-old boys don't need an AR-15," someone from the audience yelled, prompting applause.

The Good Fight Season 5: Cush Jumbo and Delroy Lindo Returning to ‘Give Audience a Proper Goodbye’ https://briefnews.eu/the-good-fight-season-5-cush-jumbo-and-delroy-lindo-returning-to-give-audience-a-proper-goodbye/ https://briefnews.eu/the-good-fight-season-5-cush-jumbo-and-delroy-lindo-returning-to-give-audience-a-proper-goodbye/#respond Mon, 05 Apr 2021 17:46:44 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-good-fight-season-5-cush-jumbo-and-delroy-lindo-returning-to-give-audience-a-proper-goodbye/

Coming soon on The Good Fight: A whole bunch of closure.

TVLine has learned exclusively that original cast members Cush Jumbo (Lucca) and Delroy Lindo (Adrian) — whose exits were announced last spring following the Paramount+ legal drama’s fourth season — will return as guest stars in the Season 5 premiere to finish out their characters’ storylines.

The COVID-19 crisis brought production on The Good Fight to a halt last March, forcing Season 4 to conclude three episodes early. The abrupt work stoppage prevented series creators Robert and Michelle King from giving either actor a proper sendoff.

“We couldn’t be more grateful that Delroy and Cush will be returning in season 5 to finish off their arcs,” the Kings said in a statement to TVLine “We adore the actors and their characters, and are delighted to give the audience a chance to say a proper goodbye.”

In confirming her exit in May, Jumbo told TVLine, “I have had the most amazing time over the last five years working with Robert, Michelle and the crews of both The Good Wife and The Good Fight. I will miss them all so much, but am so excited to explore pastures new. Due to the pandemic forcing us to shut down early we weren’t able to wrap up Lucca’s story fully and so I hope if schedules allow I can return next season to do that.”

Lindo, meanwhile, announced a year ago that he would be stepping away from the acclaimed drama following Season 4 to headline the potential ABC series Harlem’s Kitchen.

To fill the void left by Lindo and Jumbo, The Good Fight has added Homeland vet Mandy Patinkin and Aussie actress Charmaine Bingwa as series regulars. Production on Season 5, meanwhile, is currently underway in New York. A premiere date has not been announced.

Dancing on Ice viewers distracted by ‘off putting’ fake audience: ‘Can barely watch!’ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-viewers-distracted-by-off-putting-fake-audience-can-barely-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-viewers-distracted-by-off-putting-fake-audience-can-barely-watch/#respond Mon, 01 Mar 2021 05:08:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-viewers-distracted-by-off-putting-fake-audience-can-barely-watch/

Dancing on Ice bosses have had to make several changes this year as usual proceedings have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The number of contestants taking part has also drastically fallen following multiple injuries over the last few weeks. To still bring energy to the ITV programme, sound effects of people clapping and cheering on the remaining stars have been introduced in this series. However, those watching at home weren’t best pleased with the changes.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “That clapping is really off-putting and I’m not even skating! No real audience would clap the whole way through #DancingOnIce.”

Another posted: “Wow the fake audience clapping on #DancingOnIceis really jarring tonight, could barely hear the music even @dancingonice.”

Whilst a third commented: “I absolutely hate this fake studio noise I can barely hear the music that there skating to #DancingOnIce.”

“Can we have the incessant seal-like clapping in the back and music more in the foreground please Mr #DancingOnIce sound person,” a fourth shared.

A fifth opined: “Calm the crowd noise down #DancingOnIce,” with a sixth stating: “Turn down the audience ‘clapping’ #DancingOnIce.”

Sunday night’s show was the first episode to air since bosses decide to put the programme on a brief hiatus last weekend.

Instead of a live instalment of the competition, a rundown of some of the biggest moments to air from the show was broadcast.

Therefore, the remaining five contestants wanted to do their best to prove they are worthy to be crowned champion.

The celebrities still taking part at the beginning of the show included Colin Jackson, 54, and Rebekah Vardy, 39.

Sonny Jay, 27, Lady Leshurr, 32, and Faye Brookes, 33, made up the rest of the line-up as five celebrities have pulled out following injuries sustained in training or from testing positive from coronavirus.

Faye also performed for the first time with her new partner Matt Evers, 44, after Hamish Gaman, 37, had to withdraw after injuring himself.

Despite this change, the former Coronation Street actress is still the favourite to win the competition.

According to the latest odds from Coral bookmakers, the soap star stands at 1/2 to be crowned victor in a few weeks time.

Coral spokesperson Harry Aitkenhead said: “Five celebrities remain to battle it out on the ice to be crowned Dancing on Ice 2021’s champion and we make Faye the hot favourite to go all the way.”

They also believe Rebekah was the favourite to leave the show as her chances of leaving were 5/4 just 24 hours before the latest live episode.

“The betting spells bad news for Rebekah, who is our favourite to be next to go,” Aitkenhead explained, before stating: “She will have to upset the odds if she is to finish any better than 5th place.”

Not far behind Faye in contention for the title of the victor is Capital FM presenter, Sonny, at 3/1, with Colin in third place at 12/1.

Earlier this week, it was announced that because of all the withdrawals, the final would be pushed forward by one week.

An ITV spokesperson said: “The competitions final will now take place on Sunday 14th March.

“Our production team and cast have delivered a fantastic show during incredibly challenging times.

“Continuing to make the best TV for our viewers is our top priority and we look forward to the rest of the series.”

Dancing on Ice continues Sundays at 6:15pm on ITV.

In the latest TV ratings, CBS’ Tough as Nails opened Season 2 on Wednesday night with 3.4 million total viewers and a 0.5 demo rating — which is right on par with its freshman average.

Elsewhere:

NBC | Chicago Fire held steady to lead Wednesday both in total audience (with 7.3 million viewers) and in the demo (with a 1.0 rating). Med (7.1 mil/0.9), meanwhile, slipped two tenths in the demo, and P.D. (6.2 mil/0.8, read recap) was steady.

THE CW | Riverdale‘s time-jumped “reboot” (515K/0.1, read post mortem) and Nancy Drew (463K/0.1) were both steady in the demo, though the former dipped to its smallest audience ever.

FOX | Masked Dancer (2.7 mil/0.6) ticked up, Name That Tune (2.4 mil/0.5) was steady.

ABC | The Goldbergs (3.2 mil/0.6) and American Housewife (2.6 mil/0.5) were steady, while Call Your Mother (2.1 mil/0.3) dipped to new lows leading out of a Conners rerun. For Life (1.42 mil/0.2, read post mortem) hit a new demo low.

The Live+Same Day numbers reported in our ratings column do not reflect a show’s overall performance, given the increased use of delayed playback via DVR and streaming platforms, plus out-of-home viewing. These numbers (Nielsen fast nationals, unless denoted as finals) instead aim to simply illustrate trends or superlatives. Warning: Contents may be hot!

Saturday Night Live‘s Season 46 premiere, with host Chris Rock and musical guest Megan Thee Stallion, delivered 7.77 million total viewers and a 1.68 demo rating, marking the NBC sketch comedy series’ most watched season opener in four years (since 2016, when Margot Robbie and The Weeknd drew 8.3 mil).

Excluding that 2016 telecast, this weekend’s episode represents the most-watched season premiere since 2008 (when Michael Phelps and musical guest Lil Wayne delivered 10.15 million).

TVLine readers gave the episode an average grade of C-.

In the demo, excluding last season’s historic Dec. 21 telecast hosted by Eddie Murphy and with musical guest Lizzo, the Season 46 premiere was the top-rated SNL episode in two years, since the Sept. 29, 2018 season opener with Adam Driver and Kanye West.

SNL‘s return also marks the No. 1 most-watched entertainment telecast of the week to date on the Big 4 networks and No. 2-rated, behind only The Masked Singer’s 1.87.

That said, SmackDown landed in a three-way tie for the demo win on this very quiet Friday, matching reruns of ABC’s Shark Tank (2.9 mil/0.4) and NBC’s Dateline (2.8 mil/0.4).

CBS’ colorized Dick Van Dyke Show episodes, served up as a tribute to the recently passed Carl Reiner, delivered Friday’s largest audience, averaging 3.73 million viewers (along with a 0.3 demo rating).
