Spycraft in the Cold War was a lot different than it is now. Rather than hacking computers or trying to fix elections on social media, spooks tried to dig up secrets using cool gadgets. Aston’s Auctioneers in the UK just sold off a very interesting batch of 25 rare cameras, many used by Soviet Union spooks. The most interesting of those may be a miniature spy camera designed to look like a much less conspicuous Soviet-era KMZ Zenit-E SLR.

The leather case may say “Zenit,” but the camera inside is not that at all (insert your own Pimp my Ride joke). Rather, it’s the infamous F-21 AJAX-12 spy camera that uses 21mm film and has a tiny f/2.8 lens. It’s pointed out the side of the case, letting the photographer take pictures inconspicuously at 90 degrees just by pushing a small button on the bottom.

When the shutter is activated, a flap on the side driven by a piece of string simultaneously opens to expose the lens. The camera also used a spring-powered “clockwork drive,” allowing the user to take multiple images without detection.

On top of the crazy spy camera, Aston’s auctioned off a briefcase camera, a cigarette package camera, a Leica camera with USSR stamping, an umbrella camera and a suit camera. Nearly all the devices in the auction, manufactured between 1942 and 1990, were museum-quality and in working order. Such objects are hard to come by nowadays, so the auction netted over £60,000 ($ 78,000). That included a record £29,000 ($ 37,500) for the cigarette camera and £4,100 ($ 5,300) for the camera-within-a-camera.

Aston’s photographic consultant, Tim Goldsmith, called the spy camera “completely ridiculous,” adding that it was his favorite lot of the bunch. “We must’ve had 40 or 50 huge boxes, but [it] was the only one that I could not for the life of me work out how to operate,” he told Bloomberg.

Eventually, he had to call the original manufacturer KMZ (commonly known as Zenit) to figure it out. That’s when he discovered that it was actually a different type of camera mounted in a special case edge-wise with the lens pointing to the side. “If you’re somewhere where you’re not allowed to take photographs, a security guard would say, ‘Oh, he can’t take a photo, his camera’s closed in its case around his neck,'” Goldsmith noted. “[It’s] certainly a gadget worthy of Q.”

Would you spend thousands of pounds on a piece of wedding cake more than six years old? Well now is your chance. 

Prince William, 35, and the Duchess of Cambridge, 35, are auctioning off part of their eight-tier wedding cake at Chiswick Auction House next month. 

The fruitcake, designed by chef Fiona Cairns, reportedly took five weeks to complete and was decorated with 900 sugar-paste flowers. 

But while the thought of fruity royal wedding cake, adorned with flowers, may sound delicious, the dessert isn’t actually edible. 

According to Yahoo, the cake will go on auction on September 27 with the guide price starting at £800. 

It’s expected to sell for thousands of pounds, after another alice was sold in 2014 for around £8,000. 

The highest bidder will receive the slice of cake in a specifically-designed cream and gold commemorative tin – the same tin that was gifted with a slice to guests at the couple’s weddings, reports The New Daily. 

The tin, with a printed card, reads, “With the best wishes from the TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in celebration of the wedding of TRH the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge”. 

It could be to make her more relatable. 

He explained: “There has been lots written about the Duchess and Prince William’s spending.

“It’s likely to be the reason why she is thrifty with her wardrobe and often recycles dresses and coats. Even a princess has to dress on a budget.”

If those items are too pricey there is always the flash leopard-print desk set and blotter to consider, or the life-size hand-painted resin cougar used to adorn garden photo-shoots.

Like a glamorous character from one of her best-selling bonk-busters, Jackie Collins lived a bling-encrusted life.

The novelist Jackie Collins has died, at the age of 77, of breast cancer which she had kept secret for 6 years.

“I want to write about the kind of woman that I have observed here for many years,” she said at the start of her writing career.

“She has the perfect hair do, the perfect nails, wears the right jewellery, the right clothes, goes to Rodeo Drive, has lunch with the girls…”

She might have been describing her own life.

The fictional world of Tinseltown glamour that fans so loved in her books was alive in Collins’s private life which in later years she spent in the Hockney inspired Beverly Hills home she had designed in the early 1990s with her second husband, the gallery and nightclub owner, Oscar Lerman.

The £20 million house was a custom-designed backdrop for her numerous collections and included a gallery no less than 150 metres in length where she showcased her collection of paintings, including an extensive collection of Beryl Cook works which reminded her of her English childhood.

As well as these, the auction includes a portrait of the novelist wearing the glitzy 6.04 carat diamond ring which could easily be the one she described in her 1983 book Hollywood Wives when she wrote about a character wearing a “gulls-egg diamond ring on her left hand which could lay a burglar out for a week and a half”.

Born in Hampstead, London, to a theatrical agent whose later clients included Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones, Collins would sometimes sit on a leopard-print sofa to write her novels in longhand.

She bought the Art Deco suite with matching chairs, estimated to be worth up to £2,400, in a Paris flea market.

“She particularly loved it because it had leopard on it. She loved leopard,” says her daughter Tiffany.

“Our mother never did anything in small measures,” she adds. “She was passionate about collecting, and spent many decades selecting paintings, statuettes and jewellery which brought her joy and creative inspiration.”

Jackie had a particular passion for Art Deco sculpture and 20th century American and British painting, but she also loved pretty jewels.

As well as the ring, the auction features fabulous emerald and diamond encrusted earrings with an expected value of up to £8000 and a companion broach likely to fetch nearly three times that.

Jackie Collins was born in 1937 and began her career as an actress before moving to Hollywood in the late 1970s to join her eldest sister, Joan, four years her senior – at the urging of her parents.

Jackie’s first novel, The World is Full of Married Men, was published in 1968 and marked the start of a 47-year writing career.

An immediate success, the book was a bestseller as were the next 31 novels which together sold more than 500 million copies in 40 countries worldwide.

Her novels were adapted for film and television; The Stud (1969) and The Bitch (1979) starred her sister. “My heroines kick ass. They don’t get their asses kicked,” she wrote of her feisty approach.

“I write about real people in disguise. If anything, my characters are toned down – the truth is much more bizarre.”

And she loved writing about sex, not caring whom she shocked. “I like my readers’ imaginations to take over and if women are getting turned on by it that’s great,” she said at a time when Mills & Boon was still the only alternative.

Collins secured huge advances for her work which included £8 million for three novels in 1988 – a sum her smiling agent Michael Korda described as “the largest amount of money in American book publishing, about the same size as the Brazilian national debt”.

It helped to fuel her love of conspicuous consumption as she set about acquiring art and sculpture that inspired her. “Jackie Collins lived the lifestyle about which she wrote, and the sale will provide an exclusive insight into the real woman behind her unforgettable characters,” says Leslie Wright, VicePresident of Bonhams.

She was a woman as driven as she was successful.

Collins wrote seven hours a day, seven days a week.

“Sometimes I like to write by the pool, listening to Lionel Richie and surrounded by all those phallic cacti,” she once explained.
