  • Items featured in James Bond films are being auctioned by Christie's in London.
  • Some of the most notable lots are the cars used in the 2021 film "No Time to Die".
  • The Aston Martin DB5 could fetch $ 2.3 million, while a Land Rover could go for almost $ 600,000.

An Aston Martin DB5 expected to fetch about $ 2.3 million in an auction to commemorate the 60th anniversary of James Bond.

The "Sixty Years of James Bond" auction is being conducted by Christie's and is due to start later this month. The last three 007 auctions run by the auction house raised almost $ 7.2 million.

There are items commemorating each of the six actors to have played Bond, including Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.

While costumes, boats and Bond-related getaways are up for grabs, the most eye-catching is a collection of classic cars, mostly from "No Time to Die", including Aston Martins, Jaguars, and Land Rovers.

Bidders will need deep pockets to lump for the cars seen in the film, but there's also an exclusive model replica for the more frugal bidder.

In the film, Bond is assaulted on all fronts by assailants, meaning his car has accordingly seen better days.

T-Mobile won the lion’s share of spectrum licenses in the latest Federal Communications Commission auction, helping it fill rural network gaps that evoked comparisons to Swiss cheese. T-Mobile’s winning bids totaled $ 304.3 million, letting it obtain 7,156 licenses out of 7,872 that were sold, the FCC announced yesterday.

T-Mobile’s licenses are spread across 2,724 counties (out of 3,143 total in the US). The second-highest bidder in dollar terms was PTI Pacifica, which spent $ 17.7 million on nine licenses in five counties. “With most of the available spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band located in rural areas, this auction provides vital spectrum resources to support wireless services in rural communities,” the FCC said.

The auction provided up to three blocks of spectrum, totaling 117.5MHz in each county. In terms of the number of licenses won, the second-place finisher was the North American Catholic Educational Programming Fund. Its winning bids totaled $ 7.8 million and cover 107 licenses in 84 counties.

The bundle of bills consists of about 100 $ 100 prop bills wrapped in a ‘$ 10,000’ strap label.”

Light-Up Cauldron, Charmed
STARTING BID: $ 400
ESTIMATE: $ 800 – $ 1,200

“The bowl is filled with an orange acrylic component that sits above a small light, which illuminates orange to look like an evil potion. The cauldron is heavily distressed to imitate decades of use.”

Egg-Shaped Spacecraft, Mork & Mindy, Escape from New York
STARTING BID: $ 10,000
ESTIMATE: $ 20,000 – $ 30,000

“The egg was originally built for John Carpenter’s dystopian motion picture Escape from New York, and rescuing the President of the United States from this escape pod egg was central to the storyline. STARTING BID: $ 15,000
ESTIMATE: $ 30,000 – $ 50,000

“This wood prop was acquired from Star Trek: The Motion Picture’s property master Richard Rubin, who received it and other materials from Star Trek: The Original Series during pre-production on the Star Trek feature film. This and other props were refreshed by Rubin for potential use in the film, including fresh blue-grey paint, though the wood body exhibits still numerous chips and marks beneath the fresh paint indicative of use in The Original Series.”

ESTIMATE: $ 6,000 – $ 8,000

“The saffron color spandex on the top and leggings has been extensively hand-painted allover with brown paint, perhaps in homage to Fartman’s fabled ability to propel himself by his own flatulence.”

Japanese auction reveals Nintendo’s first Wii remote… for the GameCube https://briefnews.eu/japanese-auction-reveals-nintendos-first-wii-remote-for-the-gamecube/ https://briefnews.eu/japanese-auction-reveals-nintendos-first-wii-remote-for-the-gamecube/#respond Sun, 28 Oct 2018 07:09:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/japanese-auction-reveals-nintendos-first-wii-remote-for-the-gamecube/

Yahoo Auctions

Over the weekend, a Japanese auction site revealed an incredibly rare version of Nintendo’s Wii remote: one that was designed not for a Wii console, but for the previous generation’s GameCube. And at least one game developer has already attested to its legitimacy.

The previously unrevealed remote controller, which sold at Yahoo Auctions for 74,000 yen (approximately $ 663 USD) on Thursday, looks incredibly similar to what eventually launched for the Wii. The button layout and shape of the remote looks quite similar, and it includes a paired “nunchuk” controller and sensor bar. But unlike the wireless Wii controller that eventually launched in 2006, this one is hardwired—and includes a GameCube controller connector at the end of its apparently long cord.

AI-generated painting sells for $432,000 at auction https://briefnews.eu/ai-generated-painting-sells-for-432000-at-auction/ https://briefnews.eu/ai-generated-painting-sells-for-432000-at-auction/#respond Fri, 26 Oct 2018 02:32:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ai-generated-painting-sells-for-432000-at-auction/

A painting created by artificial intelligence sold for $ 432,000 at the Christie’s Prints and Multiples art auction in New York. The piece, called “Portrait of Edmond Belamy,” is the first artwork made entirely by AI to go up for sale at a major art auction. It was expected to fetch between $ 7,000 and $ 10,000, making the $ 432,000 haul quite the shocker.

The painting was the work of a type of algorithm known as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) that was devised by a Paris-based art collective called Obvious. The group fed the algorithm a data set of about 15,000 portraits painted between the 14th and 20th centuries. A Generator portion of the algorithm used its understanding of those many works of art to start creating its own images.

Another part of the system, the Discriminator, was tasked with determining the difference between the human-made art and the art being produced by the Generator. This process continued until the Discriminator could no longer tell the works apart, at which point the art collective decided the work was good enough to sell.

The “Portrait of Edmond Belamy” was one of 11 in a series of portraits of non-existent people created by the AI. Obvious Art is selling the other portraits for 10,000 euros a pop on its website, though the group may start rethinking that price point after the auction.

'We’ve been Banksy’d!' Balloon girl self-destructs upon fetching 1.1mn at Sotheby’s auction (VIDEOS) https://briefnews.eu/weve-been-banksyd-balloon-girl-self-destructs-upon-fetching-1-1mn-at-sothebys-auction-videos/ https://briefnews.eu/weve-been-banksyd-balloon-girl-self-destructs-upon-fetching-1-1mn-at-sothebys-auction-videos/#respond Sat, 06 Oct 2018 03:59:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/weve-been-banksyd-balloon-girl-self-destructs-upon-fetching-1-1mn-at-sothebys-auction-videos/

The elusive world-famous British street artist Banksy has reportedly pulled off one of the greatest art heists, allowing his own painting to self-destruct, just moments after ‘Girl with a Balloon’ had fetched over £1mn at auction.

Art lovers and collectors appeared shocked the moment Banksy’s Girl with a Balloon shredded itself into ribbons immediately after hammering a record of £860,000 (£1.04mn or $ 1.37mn with buyer’s premium) at a Contemporary Art Evening Auction at Sotheby’s London on Friday.

The 101cm-by-78 cm canvas in an artist’s frame, annihilated in front of the auctioneers by a mechanism apparently hidden within the base of the frame, with just strips left to admire from the 2006 masterpiece produced by the famous-yet-anonymous British artist.

Attendees at the event appeared to be in “complete confusion” the moment an “alarm inside the frame started going off as the gavel went down,” Robert Casterline of Casterline Goodman gallery told Hyperallergic.

While some tried to figure out what just happened, others reportedly noticed an elusive man dressed in black sporting sunglasses and a hat “scuffling” with security guards immediately after the fiasco. This led some to speculate that Banksy might have personally carried out the stunt.

“We’ve just been Banksy’d,” said Alex Branczik, senior director at Sotheby’s, according to The Art Newspaper. “He is arguably the greatest British street artist, and tonight we saw a little piece of Banksy genius.”

The unusual heist of the artwork is completely new for the art world and, while the piece was lost forever, the scraps and remnants could now be worth more than the original intact masterpiece itself. “You could argue that the work is now more valuable,” Branczik said. “It’s certainly the first piece to be spontaneously shredded as an auction ends.”

The auction house is now trying to figure out what to do next. “We have talked with the successful purchaser who was surprised by the story. We are in discussion about next steps,” Sotheby’s said in a statement to the Financial Times.

Girl with Balloon was one of the “most widely recognizable images” ever painted by the anonymous British icon. The spray paint and acrylic on canvas that was mounted on board depicted a small girl in black and white reaching out towards a red, heart-shaped balloon attached to a string. “Unlike the other editioned iterations of this famous motif, the present work is a rare unique painting that was given to the present owner by Banksy in 2006 following the artist’s warehouse show, Barely Legal, in Los Angeles,” Sotheby’s said of the lot.

eBay: A rare 50p coin is listed for £900 on the auction website – do you have one like it? https://briefnews.eu/ebay-a-rare-50p-coin-is-listed-for-900-on-the-auction-website-do-you-have-one-like-it/ https://briefnews.eu/ebay-a-rare-50p-coin-is-listed-for-900-on-the-auction-website-do-you-have-one-like-it/#respond Fri, 17 Aug 2018 18:59:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ebay-a-rare-50p-coin-is-listed-for-900-on-the-auction-website-do-you-have-one-like-it/

Ebay is a popular online hotspot for coin collectors on the look out for the most rare and valuable coin pieces.

One rare 50p coin with a frog design is listed for a hefty sum on the auction website.

The 50p coin, which has been viewed by six people in the last hour at the time of writing, is listed for the Buy It Now price of £900.

The listing is titled: “Very rare – Mr Jeremy Fisher, 50p coin, year 2017, USED!”

It is being sold by eBay user joro-atc, who has a 100 per cent positive feedback rating on the website.

The listing is being watched by 70 users across the eBay site, suggesting the demand for this coin.

The accompanying description reads: “Very rare and in very good condition, it is used but it is still shiny and brilliant.”

So what is distinctive about this coin? The Royal Mint website gives some background as to its origins.

It explains it is one of a series of coins dedicated to the works of children’s author Beatrix Potter.

The description reads: “Mr. Jeremy Fisher stars in the eighth of the little tales, a story of an eventful fishing trip that ends in Jeremy narrowly escaping being a trout’s dinner.

“‘The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher’ gives us a wider glimpse into the charming world Beatrix Potter created, as we meet some interesting friends in the story including Mr. Alderman Ptolemy Tortoise and Sir Isaac Newton.

“Mr. Jeremy Fisher has been captured on this Brilliant Uncirculated 50p coin – the first time the famous fisherman has featured on an official United Kingdom coin.

“The coin comes in a fold-out case, inspired by Beatrix’s own watercolour illustrations, including more details about Jeremy’s tale.”

It is not just rare 50p coins which are listed on the eBay website.

Earlier this week, a rare £2 coin was listed on the buying and selling platform.

The rare coin has been listed for the whopping price of £250 on the eBay website.

It is a Shakespeare Histories design first minted in 2016 which has a crown, sword and rose design.

The coin is listed by eBay user katipratte_0, who has a 100 per cent positive feedback rating on the platform.

The description reads: “One of three coins issued in 2016 to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of playwright William Shakespeare.

“This one represents history related plays and shows a crown and sword.”
