A Republican proposal to impose a national ban on abortion after 15 weeks is putting some GOP candidates in a difficult spot, forcing candidates such as Dr. Mehmet Oz to profess a commitment to ending a procedure he likened to "murder" while not alienating moderates who support the right to choose.
On Tuesday, Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, introduced a bill that would prohibit doctors from terminating a pregnancy after 15 weeks, with no exception for fetal abnormalities that are typically spotted later on. The legislation has threatened to upend what had been the GOP line on abortion since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade: that the matter is one for the states to decide, not the federal government.
In Pennsylvania, the Oz campaign insisted that the TV personality turned Republican nominee for US Senate would not want to interfere with state laws on whether a person can terminate a pregnancy.
In a statement, Oz spokesperson Brittany Yanick told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the candidate "is pro-life with three exceptions: life of the mother, rape, and incest."
The statement did not directly address the Graham proposal. But, Yanick said, "as a senator, he'd want to make sure the federal government is not involved in interfering with the state's decisions on the topic."
The statement came a day after Oz said he would support federal legislation protecting same-sex marriage, a stance that angered some conservatives who have never warmed to the physician, despite his being endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
Yanick did not immediately respond to an Insider request for comment on how Oz would vote should he be elected this fall and the Graham bill be brought to the Senate floor by a Republican majority.
Oz's Democratic rival, Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, wasted no time responding to the comment. Fetterman held a rally on Sunday trumpeting his support for abortion rights.
"A federal abortion ban would sure seem to interfere with a state's decision on the topic of abortion," Fetterman said in a statement. "Dr. Oz and his team need to stop the spin and stop the bullshit. This is a bill that he would actually have to vote on. Oz needs to tell us — yes or no, would you support this bill?"
If he were in the Senate, Fetterman added, he would be "a HELL NO."

DEMENTIA is an umbrella of neurological diseases affecting the brain and resulting in the death of the patient after an often prolonged period. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, a condition first discovered in 1906. While the workings of the disease have remained a mystery, advances in science mean those mysteries are now being demystified.

Nicky Campbell was hosting today’s The Big Questions on BBC One and he was joined by a variety of guests in the Manchester studio, and on live video link. A row ensued between Alena Kate Pettitt and Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu about patriarchy in Britain and how some women are being suppressed by males in the workplace and at home.
Nicky kicked off the show by introducing the topics, he said: “Today on The Big Questions, will women every achieve equality and morally, is Shamima Begum Britain’s responsibility?”
With International Women’s Day celebrating the achievements of women across the globe tomorrow, there is “still a long way to go before women achieve equality”.
Everyone was asked what could be done to make progress and changes to reach “true equality for women” and one of the guests spoke about equality of opportunity vs equality of outcome.
Emma Webb, a Research Fellow “disagreed” with Nicky “quite strongly”.
“What we’re talking about here is not equality, it’s about equity and equity in my opinion is not compatible with equality. We’re talking about equality of outcome and equal opportunity.

“Equality of opportunity, we do tend to focus on equality of outcome as a measure of whether or not there is systemic discrimination, it’s seen as pointing to something being wrong within organisations or society more broadly. And I don’t think that’s the right way to look at it,” she added.
“Why wouldn’t you want to look at equality of outcome?” Author Annabelle Williams asked. Emma replied: “I don’t think equality of outcome is first, an indicator of equality of opportunity.”
Toxic masculinity was then mentioned as well as the patriarchy and Author Alena Kate Pettitt was keen to give her view.
“I struggle with this, I honestly don’t feel like I’ve been held back by men whatsoever,” she remarked. “Legislation wise, perhaps, the lawmakers and there should be more women lawmakers of course.
“I grew up in a generation that was girl power all the way, girls can do anything they want to do, I don’t remember a boy saying ‘you can’t do that’. Ye, that’s the narrative, we’re sold a bill of goods, ‘men are going to keep you down, men are going to keep you behind in the workplace’.
“I have worked in very female-dominated environments and it was like crabs pulling each other down. And I’ve also worked in a male-only environment where I was the woman, you’d expect me to be the one t make the tea, whereas actually I was far more respected there,” Alena added.
Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu jumped in: “Can I comment here? Can I just say this is part of the problem, I find a lot of us today, in fact, every single woman, the success we have the opportunities we have is because of other women who went before us and fought the good fight.
“So when we get to the stage that we’re at and I hear comments like ‘I don’t see structural patriarchy’ that actually concerns me.

“The fact that you may not experience certain things, you should be able to see that there are other women who are experiencing systemic patriarchy.
“That should be obvious. That should be enough for us to say, ‘Okay if it’s happening to you, it’s more than likely going to happen to me. Or it may never happen to me but it’s not good, we need to fight it.’
“And the other point about equity and equality, the outcome can be an indicator of equality. And we don’t need to treat them as separate things, they intersect, they coexist, they want the same,” she continued.
“And choices, the choices women make should be available to them, whether they are in their 30s, 40s, decides to have children and raise her kids, should not be a determining factor on what equality of equal outcome means.”
Nicky said: “Alena, do you want to come back in on that?
“And of course, there are huge complications and intricacies along the way because this is not just women and men, we’re talking about cultural differences, social differences, educational differences, religious differences. Goodness only knows what in those categories!”
Alena replied to Dr Shola with: “And I’m not denying that there is a systemic patriarchy, in different pockets of society, in different nations, different businesses.
“I do not believe that there is this overarching patriarchy that’s keeping us down.
“I never felt like I couldn’t achieve anything in my life, yet the choices I’ve made, feminism means choice but my choice is criticised by other women because they believe I’m oppressed and under the patriarchy – which is frankly, insulting.”
Today’s edition of Jeremy Vine saw discussion surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to step back as senior royals and become financially independent become incredibly heated. Carole explained she felt Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision was “damaging” to the royal brand.
Jeremy commented: “There are certain things that are not royal but celebrity.”
“This does nothing but improve and sustain the royal brand,” Pat Kane commented.
But Carole did not agree as she cut in: “It really doesn’t. It does the opposite.”
“They announced their change of status on Instagram,” Pat continued.

The heated topic comes just days after one caller into the show explained they felt the Queen had taken “too much” from Harry.
Prince Harry spoke at a charity evening for Sentebale in London on Sunday night saying there was “really no other option” but to step back.
Calling into the Channel 5 panel show on Monday morning, Deborah from Southampton said she was “incandescent with rage” over how Meghan and Harry had been treated.
“Yeah, you know he lost his mum, he served his country in Afghanistan and elsewhere,” she began.
“He was loyal to the monarchy and all he wanted to do was look after his family.
“And, that’s been taken away, so much have been taken away from him.
“I’ve always prided myself on being a royalist but quite frankly at this point, shame on them.”
She added: “I think everyone bullied him.”
Jeremy Vine on 5 airs weekdays on Channel 5 at 9.15am.
“Excuse me for interrupting,” Stayt said. “What does a government on strike look like?”
“Look, I’m not talking about a government on strike,” Javid tried to answer but Stayt continued: “What does a government on strike look like?”
“Our focus is getting this arrangement with Jeremy Corbyn, which is let’s focus on the most important thing right now, which is to get Brexit done in the next couple of weeks. At the same time, let’s agree to a general election,” the Chancellor of the Exchequer remarked.
But Stayt was back interrupting him again: “What you’re doing is arm twisting. And the thing you’re holding against the nation, if you like, if they don’t agree with you about what you want to do, what your government wants to do, what the Prime Minister wants to do, you’re going to mothball things!
“That is a clear and obvious threat! That you will stagnate everything so nothing gets done!”

In tonight’s dramatic EastEnders Boxing Day episode, Kat (played by Jessie Wallace) will attack Hayley (Katie Jarvis).
Last night’s festive instalment saw Kat learn her estranged husband Alfie (Shane Richie) was Cherry’s father.
After Stacey (Lacey Turner) caught Alfie and Hayley kissing, their secret was out.
Hayley became overwhelmed as Kat and Alfie argued with one another about the affair.
Unable to deal with the bickering any longer, she snapped and pushed Alfie down the stairs.
Fans have been left worried Alfie has been killed and Kat believes he is dead.
Shocked by Hayley’s actions, she explodes and attacks the new mum.
In scenes set to air tonight, she can be seen putting her hands around Hayley’s neck and it’s clear she wants revenge.
Will Hayley survive their heated altercation?
Speaking ahead of the episode, actress Jessie said: “Obviously Kat is going to find out and she reacts in the way only Kat can react. She goes crazy.
“In the heat of the moment, Kat reacts as you’d expect. She’s so angry and upset, there’s this whole whirlwind of emotions that she’s going through and she just doesn’t care.
“There’s no vision, Kat’s just so angry and betrayed.”
Opening up about being reunited with co-star Shane for the scenes, she added: “I love Shane, we’re like soulmates, he’s like my brother.
“I love him so, so much and when he wasn’t here I missed him like crazy.
“Kat and Alfie have been together for 17 years so yes, it’s been amazing.”
Meanwhile, there is the question of what will happen to baby Cherry.
Hayley has been struggling to bond with the little one whereas Alfie is smitten with his daughter.
If Alfie does survive his fall could the pair be locked in a tense custody battle?
Or, will the Slater clan rally around Hayley and protect her if Alfie is dead?
EastEnders continues on Boxing Day at 8.30pm on BBC One.
A group of violent protesters has attacked a police officer at the Yellow Vest protests in Paris, pinning him to the ground before repeatedly hitting and kicking him.
A video shows the mob ganging up on the officer near the Arc de Triomphe in the French capital. He eventually breaks free, with one protester seen to be helping him as he flees from those who attacked him.
The footage shows just one of the many acts of violence taking place in Paris on Saturday, where some 260 people have been arrested and around 100 others injured during Yellow Vest protests.
This is the third weekend that protests against fuel hikes have hit Paris, turning the city into a battlefield and leading to tear gas and water cannon being deployed by officers. Demonstrations are also taking place in other cities across France, including Marseille, Strasbourg, and Toulouse.

In a clash of the world’s most popular philosophers, avowed communist Slavoj Zizek attacked ‘pseudo-scientific’ Jordan Peterson and Steven Pinker, who he described as his “enemy,” during an appearance at the Cambridge Union.
Zizek, who appeared at the prestigious university’s union earlier this month, rounded on his fellow philosophers in his typical unique style.
Having previously praised Peterson for his contentions with political correctness, Zizek denounced the Canadian for having fallen into ‘this stupid trap of using the term of the contemporary right: cultural marxism.’
The Slovenian leftist then provided a history of the term and the ‘conspiracy theory narrative’ that surrounds it.
Previously Zizek argued that it was Peterson’s belief in cultural-marxism, a theory which is often labelled anti-semitic, that made him a fellow-traveller of the alt-right and undermined his claims to be a ‘classic British liberal.’
Zizek got a laugh from the Cambridge audience when hitting Peterson’s “pseudo-scientific references; he cannot talk about women and marriage without mentioning lobsters, apes or whatever,” said Zizek leading to laughs from the audience.

In another repost to Peterson, Zizek asserted that the problem with political correctness is not that it’s “too fanatically marxist” rather “it’s precisely that it’s not marxist.”
Moving onto Steven Pinker, who Zizek described as “someone who is also my enemy,” the philosopher stated that he was dubious of many of the American’s “facts” which have been used to argue that “the present is much better than anytime in history.”

Peterson has previously attempted to debate with Zizek, challenging him to publicly discuss “the validity of my ‘apparently’ scientific theories.” However philosophy fans were disappointed when it turned out that Peterson had, seemingly accidentally, responded to a Zizek quote bot Twitter account.

Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa said he had reservations about Chief Justice John Roberts’ response to President Donald Trump’s controversial characterization of a federal judge and the 9th District court, and suggested it was a hypocritical move based on Roberts’ previous interactions with Trump’s predecessor.
“Chief Justice Roberts rebuked Trump for a comment he made [about a] judge’s decision on asylum,” Grassley said in a tweet on Wednesday. “I don’t recall the Chief attacking Obama when that Prez rebuked Alito during a State of the Union.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Back at the start of the year, a set of attacks that leveraged the speculative execution capabilities of modern high-performance processors was revealed. The attacks were named Meltdown and Spectre. Since then, numerous variants of these attacks have been devised. In tandem, a range of mitigation techniques has been created to enable at-risk software, operating systems, and hypervisor platforms to protect against these attacks.
A research team—including many of the original researchers behind Meltdown, Spectre, and the related Foreshadow and BranchScope attacks—has published a new paper disclosing yet more attacks in the Spectre and Meltdown families. The result? Seven new possible attacks. Some are mitigated by known mitigation techniques, but others are not. That means further work is required to safeguard vulnerable systems.
The previous investigations into these attacks have been a little ad hoc in nature: examining particular features of interest to provide, for example, a Spectre attack that can be performed remotely over a network or Meltdown-esque attack to break into SGX enclaves. The new research is more systematic, looking at the underlying mechanisms behind both Meltdown and Spectre and running through all the different ways the speculative execution can be misdirected.
