The incident took place in June this year when an unnamed Amnesty employee received a cryptic message via WhatsApp messenger. It contained a malicious link to a website which installs spyware when visited.
Amnesty said such links are “used to distribute and deploy sophisticated mobile spyware” and are part of the Pegasus spyware platform sold by Israeli surveillance vendor, NSO Group. The spyware is able to “relay phone calls, photos, messages and more,” Amnesty added.
NSO Group “is known to only sell its spyware to governments,” Joshua Franco, Amnesty International’s Head of Technology and Human Rights said. He stressed that the group believes that this was “a deliberate attempt to infiltrate Amnesty International by a government hostile to our human rights work.”
A malicious WhatsApp message with #SaudiArabia-related bait content, carrying links we believe are used to infect victims with highly sophisticated mobile spyware, were sent to our staff member. Read our full investigation here. https://t.co/TkzSMp8BXG
— AmnestyInternational (@amnesty) August 1, 2018
“The potent state hacking tools manufactured by NSO Group allow for an extraordinarily invasive form of surveillance,” he said, adding that the “chilling attack” on Amnesty International “highlights the grave risk posed to activists around the world by this kind of surveillance technology.”
The text of the message, written in Arabic, contained details about an alleged protest near the Saudi embassy in Washington D.C. Notably it was sent almost a week after the group organized campaigns for the release of women’s rights activists who were detained in Saudi Arabia.
“Can you please cover [the protest] for your brothers detained in Saudi Arabia in front of the Saudi embassy in Washington. My brother was detained in Ramadan and I am on a scholarship here so please do not link me to this. [LINK to Pegasus]. Cover the protest now it will start in less than an hour. We need your support please,” the mysterious message said. The human rights group added screenshots and translation of the text.
Later, Amnesty found that a similar message was also sent to a Saudi Arabian rights activist. According to Franco, the message seems to be a part of a “much broader surveillance campaign” which is suspected to be used to spy on human rights activists worldwide.
Replying to Amnesty’s request, NSO Group explained that it develops cyber technology which is solely “intended to be used exclusively for the investigation and prevention of crime and terrorism.” It promised to investigate the issue and “take appropriate action based on those findings.”
According to a document named “Pegasus – Product Description” discovered in a leak of Hacking Team, an Italian spyware company back in 2015, the spyware “leaves no trace on the device” and is able to retrieve “any file from the device for deeper analysis.” The document stresses that the system operator can choose to send a message, “luring the target to open it”. “Single click, either planned or unintentional, on the link will result in hidden agent installation,” it stresses.
This is not the first time Pegasus was involved in a spying scandal. In 2016, a botched hack attempt using the spyware on the iPhone of an Arab activist triggered Apple to issue an “important” security update for its mobile operating system, iOS. The attackers tried to lure Ahmed Mansoor, a human rights activist based in United Arab Emirates, with text messages containing a suspicious link to “secrets” about detainees tortured in Arab jails.

Asked to respond to Moscow’s claims that the “civil defense” group White Helmets, which has links to Syrian rebels, were behind the April 7 incident, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told the media during an emergency briefing that “the intelligence provided certainly paints a different picture, and the President holds Syria and Russia responsible.”
When confronted about US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis’ statement that the US was still “assessing intelligence” about the specifics of what happened in the Islamist-controlled suburb of Damascus, Huckabee Sanders answered that she “can’t get into the details,” but that the administration was “confident” that the attack was ordered by advancing government forces.
Huckabee Sanders went on to explain that even if it did not directly take part in what happened in Douma, Russia bears some of the blame for the attack, as it blocked six Western-backed resolutions on Syria, which supposedly failed to clear the country of chemical weapons following the 2013 Ghouta attack. More generally, she added that Russia has been a “bad actor” for the duration of the seven-year conflict.
The press secretary nonetheless refused to say if the US president’s Wednesday statement that Russia should “get ready” for “nice and new and ‘smart'” American missiles to strike Syria mean that the US is about to use force.
“We have a number of options and all of those options are still on the table – final decisions haven’t been made yet on that front,” Huckabee Sanders said in answer to half a dozen differently-worded questions, adding, at one point, that “no timetable” has been set for any intervention.

The latest resolution to fail was a Russian-sponsored draft backing an Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) fact-finding mission at the site of the alleged attack in Douma. The draft received five votes in favor (Russia, China, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan and Bolivia), four votes against (the US, the UK, France and Poland) and six abstentions, falling short of the minimum nine votes required for adoption.
The failure of an “innocuous” draft in support of an impartial investigation into the alleged chemical incident in Syria’s Douma is a “litmus test which speaks volumes,” Russia’s UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia said. The draft was based on, and “almost completely copied,” an earlier proposal by Sweden. Nebenzia argued that the proposal was stonewalled simply because it ultimately came from Russia.
Karen Pierce, the envoy to the UK, which was one of the four nations to vote the initiative down, said that while her country “appreciated” the UNSC president’s and Sweden’s attempts to find a compromise, “fundamentally, the UK can’t vote for the Russian text because it doesn’t establish an investigation into who was responsible for the attack.”
Setting up a mechanism that would not assign blame and merely investigate whether the banned weapons were deployed was like “watching the fire and identifying that’s a fire and doing nothing to put it out,” she argued.
The US and its allies’ refusal to back the Russian proposal shows that “our Western colleagues do not need any independent investigation,” Nebenzia said, reiterating Russia’s calls to exercise restraint with regards to Syria.
The US, UK and France had earlier indicated they are likely to resort to military action in response to the alleged chemical incident in Douma on Saturday. They believe the alleged attack was perpetrated by the Syrian forces dropping chlorine-filled munitions on civilians, based on reports by the rebel-linked White Helmets civil defense group.
The Russian envoy once again called for the West to show restraint.
“I ask you once again – refrain from the plans which you might be harboring with regards to Syria,” he said.
Justifying the nay vote by the US, Ambassador Nikki Haley accused Russians of hypocrisy, claiming it is “very good in being consistent and playing games.” The proposed draft, she said, “does not accomplish anything.”
“The draft resolution mainly asks for the OPCW to send a fact-finding mission to Douma. But the fact-finding mission is already travelling to Douma, they have a mandate to investigate and collect samples,” Haley noted. The draft, she argued, aimed to put “the Russian and the Syrian governments in the driver’s seat for making arrangements” and to “micromanage” the OPCW investigation.
“This Council, and least of all Russia, should not be calling the shots,” she stressed.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Council rejected two rival drafts on Syria submitted by Russia and the US. Russia, which vetoed the US-sponsored draft, said that it was designed to justify what seems to be an imminent military action against Syria. Nebenzia argued that the US resolution was an attempt to resurrect the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM), whose mandate had expired in November and it would take months to implement. The draft gives the UN Secretary-General 30 days to set up a new investigative body.
The subsequent Russian-sponsored draft failed to gain enough votes, with the US blaming Moscow for trying to influence the composition of the team of experts, as well as the itinerary of the mission.
The OPCW, meanwhile, announced it is sending a fact-finding mission to Douma “shortly.” According to Nebenzia, two groups of the UN chemical watchdog’s experts will leave for Syria by the end of this week.

The reports about an alleged chlorine gas attack that, supposedly, affected more than 20 civilians on January 22, were dismissed by the medical specialists of the Red Crescent, who worked in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta for many years. The doctors said they found no traces of the use of any chemical agent at that time.
“At some point, our [hospital] received six people, who were allegedly suffering from respiratory problems. Following a medical examination, we did not find any problems at all, any traces of chemical agents,” Seif Aldin Hobia, a member of the Red Crescent, who worked for the last seven years at the central hospital of Douma in Eastern Ghouta, told journalists. Recalling the events that took place in January, he said “we had no evidence of chemical agents being used [in the area].”
His words were echoed by another medical specialist of the Red Crescent, Muhammad Adnan Tabazhu, who said that the medics obtained no evidence of chemical weapons being used in Eastern Ghouta between 2012 and 2018, when he was working in the area.
Back in January, former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson famously claimed that “more than 20 civilians, mostly children, were victims of an apparent chlorine gas attack,” adding that the incident raised “serious concerns that Bashar al-Assad may be continuing to use chemical weapons against his own people.”
‘Syria gases own people just as Trump mulls withdrawal?’ Journalists question Douma ‘chem attack’
He then immediately said that “whoever conducted the attacks, Russia ultimately bears responsibility for the victims in eastern Ghouta and countless other Syrians targeted with chemical weapons since Russia became involved in Syria.”
The timing of the incident, that has now been exposed as fake, conspicuously coincided with a 29-nation conference in Paris, organized to create the ‘International Partnership against Impunity for the Use of Chemical Weapons.’ The reports about the ‘attack’ came just a day ahead of the meeting. The reports were produced by controversial pro-militant sources, namely the White Helmets and the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
Moscow at the time slammed the US accusations as a “massive propaganda attack conducted with the purpose of slandering Russia on the world stage and undermining efforts for a peaceful settlement in Syria.” Back then Russia also called an emergency UN Security Council meeting, to discuss those allegations of the use of chemical weapons Syria.
In early February, Pentagon chief James Mattis admitted that the US has no evidence of such a chemical agent as sarin ever being used by the Syrian government at all. He also openly said that the only information the US had been able to obtain, so far, came from “other groups on the ground, NGOs, fighters on the ground” and just “people who claim it’s been used.”
Mattis, however, claimed that it was “clear” that Damascus had used chlorine gas in the Syrian conflict but, as before, failed to provide any evidence substantiating his claims. Reports of chemical attacks, blamed on Damascus, had repeatedly surfaced earlier, with Western media and officials immediately jumping at the opportunity to put all the blame for such incidents on the Syrian government and Moscow, often only to admit later that they actually have no evidence the attacks in question had even taken place.
The latest revelations come amid another wave of hysteria that followed yet another claim made by the same controversial pro-militant sources that, once again, have accused Damascus of carrying out a chemical attack in the town of Douma on Saturday. Syria and Russia dismissed all the accusations and called the reports fake news and propaganda, which were aimed at helping the extremists and justifying potential strikes against Syrian forces.

The State Department announced on Friday it would permanently scale back the operations of its Cuba embassy so it can perform “core diplomatic and consular functions.” The embassy would be turned into an “unaccompanied outpost,” meaning the staff’s family members will not be allowed to live at the embassy.
The measure will take effect on March 5, making a temporary departure, which was invoked back in September and left only essential diplomatic personnel in Cuba, permanent.
The “key factor” for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to drastically shrink the size of the embassy was the risk posed to “health, safety, and well-being” of the staff in wake of what Washington believes were “health attacks” on US employees in August last year, the statement reads. The origin of the supposed attacks, six months into the investigation, is still unclear.
“We still do not have definitive answers on the source or cause of the attacks, and an investigation into the attacks is ongoing,” the State Department said in a statement.
At least 24 embassy staff and family members reported a set of neurological symptoms typically associated with a brain injury, including hearing and memory loss, balance issues, damage to vision and trouble sleeping. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania who conducted the examination said that the symptoms were observed in 21 individuals.
A number of wild theories purporting to explain the symptoms have since emerged, ranging from the use of a sci-fi-like sonic weapon and poisoning,to side-effects of incessant surveillance. Some US media have, of course, pointed the finger at Russia as the possible culprit.
In its report, the University of Pennsylvania cast doubt on the version of a “sonic attack.” It stated that those who fell sick reported hearing a loud noise, but a sonic weapon would be inaudible to humans. It also added that the sounds people can actually hear are not known to cause any substantial neurological trauma.
A newly-published report by the University of Michigan disputes this conclusion, arguing that it was indeed possible for the staffers to be exposed to damaging sound. However, it offered a more down-to-earth explanation of how the implausible could have happened. The researchers believe that the audible shrill sound could have been the result of two spying devices working simultaneously. To come to this conclusion the researchers, led by associate professor Kevin Fu, first analyzed a five-second sound sample submitted by one of the victims and recently released by AP. Then, the researchers claimed to have found a combination of ultrasonic tones that created a sound which could have been heard by the staff in Cuba. “That’s 7,000 vibrations a second. It’s high-pitched, and it’s a sound that any adult or child can hear,” Fu said, as cited by The Daily Beast.
They managed to replicate the signal after placing an eavesdropping device, which would record and transmit the conversations through an ultrasonic link, and a second ultrasonic device in the same area. It was the result of a collision between the two sound waves.
While Washington still insists on using the notion of “attacks” when referring to the Cuba incidents, Havana has been denying the “sonic attack” allegations from day one.
“It’s unacceptable and immoral, from the point of view of the Cuban government, for people to be harmed by a difference between governments,” Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said in October.
The row over the mysterious incidents has strained relations between the countries, with the US warning Americans to avoid traveling to Cuba in September amid reports it wanted Cuba to cut some 60 percent of its Washington embassy staff.
Meanwhile, a group of six Democratic lawmakers, who visited Cuba in late February, said they would ask the State Department to return the staff to the embassy, noting that nothing yet indicates that Cuba plotted to intentionally harm US officials.
“I have the impression the Cubans have offered whatever cooperation we want, in discovering what if anything happened,” Patrick Leahy, the Democratic Senator from Vermont, told AP.

Back in 2015 Federer debuted a new manoeuvre to his game which has been labelled the SABR (sneak attack by Roger).
It features Federer moving up the court on an opponent’s second serve to hit a half-volley in an attempt to throw them off guard.
It works in large effect because Federer’s opponents never know when he may opt to use it and it often puts them off balance.
Boris Becker and John McEnroe have both spoken against the move, suggesting it is disrespectful to Federer’s opponents.
However, the 36-year-old has defended himself by simply claiming he doesn’t see why it would be disrespectful.
Edberg admits he was shocked when he first saw the SABR, but went on to say he isn’t sure whether it should be allowed.
“In his sneak attack, Roger brought something interesting and new to the game,” Edberg told the Mumbai Mirror.
“I don’t sort of agree with the views on it.
“Roger not only went for it, he executed the shot so well. I don’t think many players can do it.
“Whether SABR should be permissible or not…I somehow found it very interesting. At the same time it was shocking, but he won most of the points from it.
“If you do it 10 times and win six-seven points, the percentages are on your side.
“If you do a sneak attack the way Roger did and lose every point, you are going to stop doing it.”
An eyewitness who saw a car plow into dozens of protesters at a far-right rally and counter-demonstrators in Charlottesville, Virginia described the crash involving one car plowing into protesters and crashing into another as “intentional” while speculating that it was a “terrorist attack.”
“It backed up and hit everyone again. There was a girl on the ground and she was trying to get up,” an eyewitness, still shocked from the incident, told Ruptly.
“There was a girl on the ground. She got tore up….she tried to get up,” he continued, describing what happened while repeating his words. The car “didn’t have a license plate.”
“It was an intentional terrorist attack,” he concluded. There has been no confirmation from authorities that the car plowing incident was any was related with terrorism.
The driver of the car has been arrested, according to law enforcement officials. At least one person has been killed and 19 injured after a car has ran into protesters at the Charlottesville clashes between Unite the Right and counter demonstrators.
An RT journalist on the scene said that there were “extremely heavy injuries” sustained during the incident. Video footage posted on social media showed the moment of the incident the dark gray car ramed into the light gray car before violently reversing. A number of people appear to be thrown into the air with the force of the crash.

Officer Miosotis Familia was wrapping up her shift in a mobile command unit early Wednesday when the gunman walked up to the vehicle and fired a single round from a handgun through a passenger-side window, according to Deputy Chief Jason Wilcox, commander of detectives in the Bronx.
The bullet struck her in the head. She was rushed to hospital but died three hours later.
“Shots fired! 10-85!” Officer Familia’s partner, Vincent Maher, shouted over the police radio after the gunfire, including the code for ‘officer down’, according to WABC-TV. “My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! Hurry up central!”
Two other officers encountered the attacker, who was running on the street in the Fordham Heights section of the Bronx. When the gunman drew his revolver, the police opened fire and killed him.
“Based on what we know right now, this was an unprovoked direct attack against police officers who want to keep this great city safe,” Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill told reporters, according to the New York Times.
Mayor Bill de Blasio speaking at the same news conference praised Officer Familia and expressed the city’s grief.
“She was on duty, serving this city, protecting people, doing what she believed in and doing the job she loved,” he said. “And after this shocking and sudden attack her fellow officers came to her aid immediately.”
Asked whether the attack could be characterized as an assassination, Chief Wilcox replied, “Everything is pointing to that.”
A bystander was hit in the stomach by a bullet in the shootout and is in stable condition, said Commissioner O’Neill.
The gunman was identified as Alexander Bonds, who also uses the name John Bonds. He served seven years in prison for robbery in the Syracuse area before he was paroled in May 2013, according to state records. Police said there was no indication he knew Officer Familia.
In a video posted on Facebook in September, Bonds ranted about the treatment of civilians by officers and talked about how hard life was behind bars. The photos of Bonds posted on the page match a police mugshot, according to WABC.
“Don’t think every brother, cousin, uncle you got that get killed in jail is because of a blood or crip or Latin King killing them. Nah, police be killing them and saying that an inmate killed them,” he said in the video.
The Bronx neighborhood was blocked off with police tape as officers investigated the deadly shooting.
Witnesses in Fordham Heights said the violence had brought an abrupt end to July 4th holiday celebrations.
“At first I thought they were fireworks,” Roma Martinez, a longtime resident who was nearby when he heard gunfire told the New York Times. “I don’t know how many gunshots.”
“Within two or three minutes, the streets were completely filled with officers. After, we all left. The party was over,” Martinez added.
The attack resembles the December 20, 2014 killing of patrol officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, who were ambushed and shot to death in their vehicle in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. Without warning, a man approached the passenger window of their marked police car and fired.
The suspect, 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley, then fatally shot himself. Brinsley announced online in the moments before the shooting that he was planning to shoot two “pigs” in retaliation for the police chokehold death of Eric Garner.
In another similar incident, two police officers were shot and killed in Des Moines, Iowa on November 2, in two separate ambushes. The gunman was sentenced to life in prison.
Fatalities of law enforcement officers are up 24 percent so far since 2016, with 67 dead, 24 of those deaths were firearm related, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
Lawmakers in several states have introduced legislation that would make attacks on law enforcement a hate crime. Last December, a bill was introduced in California that would create stiffer penalties for those convicted.
Last July, five police officers were killed by a gunman in Dallas, and three more died in a rampage in Baton Rouge, LA. The shooting occurred during a time of high tensions between law enforcement and some communities over police killings of unarmed people of color.
Earlier in 2016, Louisiana adopted a measure dubbed the Blue Lives Matter bill, which made attacks on police officers a hate crime. Similar proposals are being considered in Texas, New Jersey and Mississippi, as well as in the US Congress, which can change the federal definition of a hate crime.
Groups including the American Civil Liberties Union have said such laws could dilute the original intent of hate crime measures to protect vulnerable classes of citizens.
“Our hate crime statute is simply not the proper home for these offenses,” Kevin Baker, legislative director of the ACLU California told the LA Times in December. “Police officer status is an employment category not analogous to the personal characteristics included in our hate crime statue, including disability, gender, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation.”

Reports claim the airline has been victim of a cyber attack, although BA has denied there is any evidence of this.
The outage comes as scores of Britons are headed overseas for the long weekend and half-term school holidays on Saturday morning.
BA has now confirmed all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick will be cancelled until at least 6pm today.
A spokeswoman for the airline said: “We apologise to customers who are facing some delays following an IT outage this morning. We are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.”
BA’s website was unavailable and some travellers claimed they could not check in on the mobile app, with many venting their frustration on social media. Some have even claimed to have been told by BA staff the company is under ‘cyber attack’.
However, the spokeswoman responded: “We’ve found no evidence that it’s a cyber attack.”
Twitter user Bryan Henson said: “Gate agent at gate A10b just called it a cyber attack…true?”
Michele Andjel added: ‘”It appears it is a cyber attack” said @British_Airways captain @Gatwick_Airport.’
Twitter user Jo Josson also tweeted the cyber attack claims, and said: “Officials are telling us there has been a cyber attack against BA’s systems. Even the tannoy is affected.”
Another flier said on Twitter: “Stuck in Gatwick departures. BA have just announced that it could be a cyber attack that has taken down their systems.”
Heathrow Airport said it was “working closely” with the airline to resolve the issue. In a statement, they said: “We apologise for the current IT systems outage. We are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.”
One passenger, Henry Tail, tweeted: “Hey @British_Airways, couldn’t log in to the app with my boarding pass on because systems were down and I missed my flight. What can I do?”
Another, Nadia Whittley, posted: “British airways computers down T5 and standstill, stranded on the plane and they make us pay for food!! Please retweet this indicency! (SIC)”
Julie Adie wrote: “We are on the runway.. For hour now..no offer of drinks..and because ba only takes cards now, we only have cash…wat we supposed to do!!?? (SIC)”
Melissa Davis, who runs MD Communications, a legal PR agency in London, was held for more than an hour and a half on the tarmac at Heathrow, on board a BA flight returning from Belfast.
But by 3pm, the British Airways (BA) plane was still on the tarmac, due to a “technical fault”.
Disgruntled passengers took to social media to vent their frustration at being trapped in the cabin for hours.
One Londoner who was travelling to San Francisco on holiday told the Standard: “They said there was some technical fault with the little truck that tows the plane to the runway.
“So we went back to the gate and they tried to fix it … but then it turned out that wasn’t the problem so they had to try something else.”
Scientists have discovered that physical activity teamed with naturally-generated vitamin D delivers a potent health boost to the body and can even protect the heart.
A large-scale study of more than 10,000 people found those who took regular exercise and had the highest vitamin D levels were 23 percent less likely to have a stroke or heart attack.
Heart attacks blight the lives of 188,000 Britons annually, killing around 73,000 people every year. Meanwhile, every year there are about 152,000 strokes in Britain, equating to one every three and a half minutes.
Most people affected are over 65 and it is the fourth biggest killer after dementia, heart disease and cancer.
Experts said people should exercise more to improve their heart health and get their vitamin D levels checked to make sure they are not deficient.
The latest research found a “direct and positive relationship” between exercise and vitamin D in improving heart health.
Strenuous physical activity and high levels of the nutrient are each known to improve cardiovascular health in their own right.
But now researchers have found when the two work together they somehow boost the heart and arteries more.
The analysis found the combined benefit of physical activity and having adequate amounts of the nutrient was better than either health factor alone.
The findings also suggest that exercise may play a role itself in boosting vitamin D levels in the blood.
Cardiologist Professor Erin Michos, of Johns Hopkins University in the US, said: “In our study, both failure to meet the recommended physical activity levels and having vitamin D deficiency were very common.
“The bottom line is we need to encourage people to move more in the name of heart health.”
The team found that exercise levels positively and directly corresponded to vitamin D levels—meaning that the more one exercised, the higher their vitamin D seemed.
However, this link related to whites, and not African-Americans. Participants who met recommended exercise levels had a 31 percent lower risk of vitamin D deficiency.
The most active participants with the highest vitamin D levels had the lowest risk for future cardiovascular disease.
