A tiny NASA satellite mapped Earth’s atmospheric ice https://briefnews.eu/a-tiny-nasa-satellite-mapped-earths-atmospheric-ice/ https://briefnews.eu/a-tiny-nasa-satellite-mapped-earths-atmospheric-ice/#respond Mon, 05 Feb 2018 15:58:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-tiny-nasa-satellite-mapped-earths-atmospheric-ice/

Last May, NASA launched a small, bread loaf-sized satellite into orbit around Earth. Dubbed IceCube, the satellite’s mission was to measure cloud ice in our planet’s atmosphere — a challenging task that researchers have previously only been able to perform in limited ways. Sensing ice clouds requires measurements at a range of frequency bands but particularly within what are known as submillimeter wavelengths, or electromagnetic wavelengths that fall in between those of microwave and infrared waves. The problem is, instruments that can take those kinds of measurements have previously had to be on board high-altitude research aircraft, meaning measurements were limited to the areas where those aircraft were flying. Launching a satellite that can perform those measurements could open up what parts of the atmosphere can be studied, and that’s where IceCube comes in.

IceCube was developed in partnership with Virginia Diodes Inc. and was done in a relatively short amount of time on a comparatively low budget. And the main goal was to be able to show that this type of project could produce a useful piece of equipment. “This is a different mission model for NASA,” said Dong Wu, one of the researchers on the IceCube team. “Our principal goal was to show this small mission could be done. The question was, could we can get useful science and advance space technology with a low-cost CubeSat developed under an effective government-commercial partnership.” In that regard, the mission appears to be a success, and as a bonus, researchers now have the first map of global atmospheric ice distribution. This will help scientists study cloud ice and how it affects our planet’s climate and will allow for better weather and climate models. “With IceCube, scientists now have a working submillimeter radiometer system in space at a commercial price,” said Wu. “More importantly, it provides a global view on Earth’s cloud-ice distribution.”

Listen: ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Score Takes You to An Atmospheric Future https://briefnews.eu/listen-blade-runner-2049-score-takes-you-to-an-atmospheric-future/ https://briefnews.eu/listen-blade-runner-2049-score-takes-you-to-an-atmospheric-future/#respond Fri, 06 Oct 2017 14:48:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/listen-blade-runner-2049-score-takes-you-to-an-atmospheric-future/ Blade Runner 2049 score

The ethereal new score for director Denis Villeneuve‘s acclaimed sci-fi sequel Blade Runner 2049 has made its way onto Spotify, and it’s ready to wash over you like tears in rain. Hang up your slick leather jackets, holster your PKD blasters, and listen to the playlist below.

Thanks to The Film Stage for pointing us to the streaming score, which you can listen to right here:

The hour-and-a-half long score is the work of composers Hans Zimmer, who should need no introduction for anyone who’s been paying attention to film music for the past thirty years, and Benjamin Wallfisch, who has scored films like The Escapist, Lights Out, Hidden Figures, Annabelle: Creation, and It.

Originally, composer Johann Johannsson was set to provide the Blade Runner 2049 score, which would have marked a reunion with with Villeneuve after their collaborations on Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival. But after hearing Johannsson’s early efforts to provide an aural analog to his stunning visuals, Villeneuve decided he wanted to head in a different direction. As he told Al Arabiya English (via Indiewire):

“The thing I will say is that making movies is a laboratory. It’s an artistic process. You cannot plan things. Jóhann Jóhannsson is one of my favorite composers alive today. He’s a very strong artist. But the movie needed something different, and I needed to go back to something closer to Vangelis. Johann and I decided that I will need to go in another direction—that’s what I will say. I hope I have the chance to work with him again because I think he’s really a fantastic composer.”

If you have some extra time to kill, you can listen to Zimmer and Wallfisch’s score on Spotify and then dive right into the Vangelis score from Ridley Scott’s 1982 original movie, which I’ve embedded below:

Spectre of N. Korean atmospheric nuclear test prompts emergency plans in Seoul & Tokyo https://briefnews.eu/spectre-of-n-korean-atmospheric-nuclear-test-prompts-emergency-plans-in-seoul-tokyo/ https://briefnews.eu/spectre-of-n-korean-atmospheric-nuclear-test-prompts-emergency-plans-in-seoul-tokyo/#respond Fri, 29 Sep 2017 23:02:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/spectre-of-n-korean-atmospheric-nuclear-test-prompts-emergency-plans-in-seoul-tokyo/ South Korean banks and utility companies are drawing up plans to construct shielding and potentially move operations overseas to protect against North Korea as further provocation from Pyongyang is expected on October 10.

South Korean banks and vital infrastructure facilities, including nuclear power plants and government ministries, have reportedly been hacked by Pyongyang in the past. And as tensions in the region escalate, many now fear the North Korean regime will conduct an atmospheric nuclear test to coincide with the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea on October 10.

The South Korean government warned Thursday that its northern neighbor was “highly likely” to continue military provocations in the build up to the October celebrations.

“Current regulations prohibit the transfer of client information overseas, so we are discussing ways to revise those rules so we can set up data back-up centres abroad,” a Financial Supervisory Commission official said as cited by Chosun.

“I understand it is an important anniversary for North Korea. We would like to maintain a sense of urgency,” Japanese defence minister Itsunori Onodera said Friday as cited by The Japan Times.

A nuclear blast or a specifically designed electromagnetic pulse device can create current and voltage surges in electronic devices while corrupting digitally stored data, posing a huge risk to financial institutions based in the South.

High altitude nuclear weapons are harder to intercept than weapons designed to strike targets on the ground and produce a giant wave of electrons which spreads outward through the Earth’s magnetic field, creating an electromagnetic pulse which can, in turn, lead to surges of 10,000 volts or more within the electric grid.

UN sanctions, which the North Korean regime has dubbed “the dirty excrement of the reactionaries of history,” have been ramped up over the past few months following a series of nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests by the reclusive nation.

However, security and nuclear energy experts warn that the North may not yet have the technically capability to perform an atmospheric nuclear test, further amplifying the threat posed given the quantity of variables.

“We are talking about putting a live nuclear warhead on a missile that has been tested only a handful of times. It is truly terrifying if something goes wrong,” Vipin Narang, a nuclear expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said as cited by the AP.

For context, a nuclear blast at an altitude of 60 miles will affect a 700-mile radius which ups the ante significantly should the North decide to follow through on threats to exercise their military muscle in response to abrasive rhetoric from Donald Trump and increased international pressure on Pyongyang.

An atmospheric nuclear test would also pose a huge threat to aircraft and shipping in the region as the North Korean government is unlikely to issue prior warning.

“Although I am sure such a launch would be very alarming to people in Japan, there is little the United States or Japan could do,” said Jeffrey Lewis, a US arms control expert at the Middlebury Center of International Studies at Monterey, as cited by AP.

Susanna Reid SWOONS over ‘atmospheric’ David Beckham on GMB https://briefnews.eu/susanna-reid-swoons-over-atmospheric-david-beckham-on-gmb/ https://briefnews.eu/susanna-reid-swoons-over-atmospheric-david-beckham-on-gmb/#respond Tue, 09 May 2017 08:48:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/susanna-reid-swoons-over-atmospheric-david-beckham-on-gmb/

The 46-year-old broadcaster did not hold back as she lavished the sportsman, 42, with compliments.

“I like it, I think it’s good. I think it’s atmospheric,” she was heard telling co-host Piers Morgan and Charlotte Hawkins.

However, Piers, 52, was not too impressed with David’s performance and panned it, saying: “He is like the third Mitchell brother,” before doing a questionable impression of the football legend.

Susanna hit back: “It’s a the key part of the film. It’s a pivotal moment, he has that role. Well done, David Beckham.”

“Well done David, you’re a brilliant actor, I can see Oscars looming, another talent for that super-talented family,” Piers replied dryly.

The controversial presenter has never been one to hold back and has previously hit out at the Beckhams, particularly after Cruz launched a single last year.

David has a small role in the film as a character called Trigger in which he oversees the legendary sword Excalibur as men try to pull it out of the stone to become the king of Camelot.

Susanna is known of her admiration for David after she hit the headlines back in 2015 for apparently flirting with the star during an interview.

There appeared to be some flirting as she was seen giggling and laughing through the Good Morning Britain interview.

At one point she joked that she was feeling “hot” under the bright lights as she fanned herself.

“It’s very hot. I’m surprised, you’ve got an amazing dress on and I’m in a T-shirt,” David told her at the time.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.

New NASA tech can survive much longer on the atmospheric hellscape that is Venus https://briefnews.eu/new-nasa-tech-can-survive-much-longer-on-the-atmospheric-hellscape-that-is-venus/ https://briefnews.eu/new-nasa-tech-can-survive-much-longer-on-the-atmospheric-hellscape-that-is-venus/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2017 04:24:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-nasa-tech-can-survive-much-longer-on-the-atmospheric-hellscape-that-is-venus/

Surviving in Venus-like conditions is near impossible, even for machinery. The surface temperature is about 860 degrees Fahrenheit and the carbon dioxide rich-air has an atmospheric pressure about 90 times that of Earth. Just moving around on Venus would feel as if you were under water and deep underground, if the heat didn’t already obliterate your equipment. NASA, however, may have found a novel solution in the form of more resistant electronics.

The new circuitry, announced yesterday with research published in the journal AIP Advances, can withstand the planet’s conditions for up to 521 hours, or about 100 times longer than the previous Venus mission electronics. “We demonstrated vastly longer electrical operation with chips directly exposed — no cooling and no protective chip packaging — to a high-fidelity physical and chemical reproduction of Venus’ surface atmosphere,” said Phil Neudeck, a lead electronics engineer on the project, said in a statement. “And both integrated circuits still worked after the end of the test.”

The breakthrough opens the door for multi-week Venus missions that could allow electronics to gather data and monitor conditions for days instead of just hours. The circuits may also have important non-space applications like helping reduce emissions in aircraft engines used here on Earth. Yet getting modern tech back on Venus, which hasn’t had a landed mission since the 1984 launch of the Soviet Vega 2 probe, is surely the most exciting possibility on the horizon.

Before the 760mph Hyperloop dream, there was the atmospheric railway https://briefnews.eu/before-the-760mph-hyperloop-dream-there-was-the-atmospheric-railway/ https://briefnews.eu/before-the-760mph-hyperloop-dream-there-was-the-atmospheric-railway/#respond Mon, 30 Jan 2017 02:50:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/before-the-760mph-hyperloop-dream-there-was-the-atmospheric-railway/

A while back, a reader e-mailed me about a Hyperloop article I had written. He said the article reminded him of an experimental railway system—called an “atmospheric railway”—that was constructed in London in the 1840s. The system essentially connected a train to a piston which lived inside a semi-sealed tube placed along the length of the track, between the track’s two rails. A pumping station at the end of the train’s route pumped air out of the tube while air was allowed into the tube at the other end. This created an atmospheric pressure differential in front of and behind the piston that moved the piston—and the train connected to it—down the rails.

I was intrigued. Running trains through tubes using unconventional methods of propulsion is hardly an idea unique to the Hyperloop, but the handful of atmospheric railway systems built in the mid-19th century prove that humans have been trying to manipulate contained atmospheres for transportation purposes for centuries.
