Electronic Arts, the largest video game developer in the world, is the latest company to reveal plans for a cloud gaming platform.
EA’s Chief Technology Officer Ken Moss announced the new platform, Project Atlas, in a blog post on Medium.
With a stable internet connection, Project Atlas will be able to stream full quality video games to mobile devices and home computers, eliminating the need for expensive video game consoles.
Microsoft and Google have their own, similar initiatives in the works — meaning that the race to take cloud gaming to the mainstream is now in full effect.

Just two years ago Boston Dynamics proudly showed off a new generation of its Atlas robot that could take an untethered stroll through the woods, before advancing to balancing on one leg and even landing a backflip.
Its latest highlight reel, however, is one that should make this guy very, very afraid. Dubbed “Parkour,” it features a bipedal battery-powered robot that not only jogs, but hops over obstacles and up an uneven obstacle course with nary a bobble. The ‘bot now has enough processing power to use its legs, arms and torso to balance through the movements and power up each 40cm-high step, while using computer vision to locate the next one.
Sure, the advertisement is that such a robot could navigate through disasters to rescue squishy humans stuck in precarious situations, but we can certainly imagine alternative applications. Japan’s Softbank bought Boston Dynamics and its robots from Alphabet a little over a year ago, and likely has aspirations for the technology that reach far beyond hit YouTube videos.

While the NFL draft is already over, the Boston Dynamics Atlas robot is angling for a free agent workout with its latest highlight video. We’ve already seen one backflipping, but considering the abilities necessary, it’s nearly as impressive to see a robot running untethered across open terrain, and easily clearing a small obstacle. The stats on its 40 time and vertical aren’t world-class yet, but a glance at older PETMAN walking demos from 2009 show how far the technology has come in just a few years.
We’re betting the next DARPA competition will look a little different from the last one.

https://briefnews.eu/vw-atlas-tanoak-would-it-make-sense-to-build-it/#respondThu, 29 Mar 2018 16:48:02 +0000http://briefnews.eu/vw-atlas-tanoak-would-it-make-sense-to-build-it/
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the New York Auto Show was the Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak pickup truck. And one of the things that make the Tanoak so intriguing is how it seems pretty feasible to bring to market. It’s based on the Atlas, which already has powertrains certified for emissions in America, and at least the front half wouldn’t likely need much, if any work to make sure it passes U.S. safety standards. And like the Atlas, it uses the MQB modular platform found in everything from the aforementioned SUV to the Golf. As such, VW wouldn’t be investing a lot of money to develop or adapt a from-scratch platform.
With all this in mind, the obvious question is: Will VW build it? The answer to that question depends on whether VW should build it, and there are arguments for both sides.
‘Build it!’ (And, ‘It looks cool!’)
Pickup sales in the U.S. continue to be strong. And midsize trucks, the size segment the Tanoak would compete in, are selling quite well. For example, the Toyota Tacoma sold nearly 200,000 units last year, and combined Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon sales were nearly 150,000. Both of those exceed VW’s bestselling car, the Jetta, which sold a little over 115,000 units in 2017, a number that just barely beats sales of the Colorado alone. Even if VW sold only a fraction of either of those trucks, it would be a great sales bump for a company that sold about 340,000 units in the U.S. across all models last year.
‘Don’t build it!’
This brings us to the argument that building the Tanoak might not be a good move for VW, and that’s the fact that the fraction of that midsize truck market accessible to VW could be miniscule. The truck on the market closest to the Tanoak is the Honda Ridgeline. It’s also a car-based pickup truck that shares its front half and powertrains with the Honda Pilot crossover SUV. It even boasts unique and interesting features such as a big trunk in the back, and a tailgate that opens in different ways. In a market where the traditional trucks are selling in the six digits, the Ridgeline sold just over 34,000 units last year. That’s not great. This midsize segment is also going to become more crowded soon as Ford introduces the traditional body-on-frame Ranger later this year, so everyone will be fighting harder for sales.
Then again …
If the Tanoak sold at least that many, that would be a solid 10 percent gain in sales, going off of VW’s 2017 numbers. Selling 34,000 units would even exceed normal VW Atlas sales, not to mention every variant of the venerable Golf. Put in that context, even the Ridgeline’s middling sales look pretty solid. Even falling short of Ridgeline’s sales wouldn’t be that bad. Who knows, the Tanoak could exceed Ridgeline sales. Even though it lacks some of the Ridgeline’s trick features, it has strengths in other areas. The concept certainly looks more butch than the Ridgeline, and style is important in the truck business. Offering some kind of low-range gearing as the concept has would also give the Tanoak a bit more off-road ability and truck market credibility than Ridgeline, too.
All-in-all, Volkswagen probably ought to build the Tanoak. It would be a relatively cheap and easy vehicle to develop and certify, and it would likely give VW’s sales a nice little boost, even if it’s never a wild success like existing competitors. Oh, and did we mention it looks cool? Yeah, you should build it, VW.
Now that Volkswagen is playing in nearly every automotive segment in America, it’s only logical that the automaker would seriously consider fielding a pickup here. Although it’s officially just a concept at this point, the Volkswagen Atlas–based Tanoak pickup seems like an obvious play. After all, VW has been talking about it for years, and with the Chattanooga-built Atlas SUV’s MQB architecture providing a sturdy base to build on—as well as a convenient way to sidestep the import duty on trucks—it seems as if the planets may have finally aligned. Here’s complete information on the Tanoak concept to keep you busy until the official word comes down. READ MORE ››

Bigger isn’t always better, and those who find the three-row Volkswagen Atlas too large for their needs will soon be able to get their hands on a smaller, more stylish variant of the Tennessee-built crossover SUV. The new entry is being previewed by the Atlas Cross Sport concept, a five-passenger model that shares its 117.3-inch wheelbase with the larger Atlas but casts a shadow 7.5 inches shorter. At last year’s New York Auto Show, VW’s CEO Hinrich Woebcken told reporters that a five-passenger version of the Atlas crossover would spring from a further investment in the company’s Tennessee manufacturing plant. And now, VW has confirmed that it’s indeed a two-row Atlas that will be produced there, joining the three-row job in the VW lineup.
And keeping with the New York theme, VW will show off a “concept” at this year’s show. Don’t expect anything wild; this concept will closely signal what the finalized version will look like, but will have some typical non-production window dressing. We expect it to look largely like a shortened version of the bigger Atlas, perhaps a little sportier with some slightly different styling up front and in the rear.
The concept art of the concept version shows very large, prominent lower chin intake elements, a swoopier “floating” roofline, and a three-bar grille with smaller, more integrated headlights. Not apparent is the chrome side window surround or lower molding of the seven-passenger Atlas. The most notable family resemblance is the squared-off fender bulge front and rear, with a strong character line linking the two. The concept’s character line incorporated the door handles, rather than dipping below them. Since it’s a concept, all of these elements are exaggerated, but the broad strokes of the styling differences should be present on the final production model.
It’s not quite clear how VW will market this, and after seeing the concept art, it seems like this is more of a “crossover coupe” like a BMW X6 rather than simply a two-row version of the Atlas – so it’s surprising VW isn’t calling it something different. Perhaps we’ll hear a new name for the vehicle in New York – similar smaller/sportier versions of three-rows often have a “Sport” appended to the name, so it wouldn’t be too crazy to have this thing show up as an Atlas Sport. We’ll know more in New York.
