In the midst of Greece’s financial crisis, Zisis Papazisis’ ‘fish in a cone’ is helping keep busy Athenians well-fed on the run. Just like his grandparents did. The chef, a finalist in Urban Adventures’ first ever global street food awards, talks to Alex King. The best stories often come from the hardest days. Growing up in Volos, a busy fishing port on Greece’s west coast, Zisis Papazisis was always fascinated by his grandfather’s tales of life in the cash-strapped 1950s, before his parents were born. “Nowadays you have to pay for everything,” Zisis explains, wistfully. “In those days it was simple; you didn’t have to pay because there was no money. You were forced to share and exchange things. ‘I give to you, you give to me and we are equal.’” As lunchtime approaches, the energy in the small, tightly-packed kitchen rises. The deep fat fryers bubble on full blast and the trickle of customers soon becomes a stream. Businesses on this street may have changed, but the frenetic pace hasn’t. Customers make their selections from the menu and the fish goes straight into the fryer. The intense hissing grows louder every time another batch of wet, salty fish hits the hot oil. It’s like being in a frantic old factory, with workers scuttling around a hissing steam engine. “The food is healthier because we fry at a high temperature,” Zisis says. “The fish stays in the fryer for the shortest possible time so it absorbs as little oil as possible. That keeps the food lighter and it keeps things moving. Fast, friendly service is our way.” We greedily work our way through the menu, and Athens’ Urban Adventures guide and food expert Nikoleta Zavou explains that she included Zisis on her Extreme Bites tour because it’s brought a fresh and innovative approach to street food in the city, one which has been passionately embraced by locals. The small fish, such as sand smelt and anchovies, come out of the fryer almost straight away, while the bigger chunks, like the cod strips or fish balls, take a touch longer. Either way, as soon as the customer receives their order, they smother the fish with juice from the lemon perched at the mouth of the cone, and then they’re gone—back to the grind, or, if they’re lucky, to sit down and eat in the square outside the Agias Eirinis Orthodox church across the road. “Street food is really common now, it’s the best choice if you’re working downtown,” says Nikoleta, adding that more and more locals are trying new things, such as going vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free. “People are trying to find different food ideas, and street food is able to react fastest, changing with the times.” The most plausible origin for the ‘fish in a cone’ concept is tied to the history of the sailors and fishermen who were frequent visitors to Velissariou Street back in the day. They came to shore to enjoy the music, alcohol and good times and, when the time came to return to their ships, they’d take away their food wrapped in a cone. It was their way of keeping the party going at sea. When it comes to making sure his food is as fresh and affordable as possible, Zisis exerts Herculean levels of effort, carefully buying from local producers at a price that will translate well for his customers. “I try and find the best stuff as cheaply as I can,” he says. “My price is low. I want to buy things cheap and sell them cheap. I don’t want my customers to pay too much.” After a spell in the army, then studying art conservation, graphic design and tourism, before working everywhere from dive bars to Michelin-starred restaurants, Zisis opened his own spot—as an experiment initially—in 2017, and is finally doing things his way. The warm and bubbly 43-year-old is ecstatic about busting a gut each day, because people appreciate the effort and good value—and even more so in hard times. Beneath each portion of Zisis’ fish, there’s a carrot and cabbage coleslaw to refresh, rehydrate and cleanse the palate. Washing it all down with a local spirit from Volos is highly recommended, but whether you’re left feeling the effects of tsipouro for the rest of the day really is up to you—and how much you choose to (over)indulge. “Sharing food is a way we can communicate with each other,” Zisis says. “We need to remember that giving benefits the giver more than the receiver. If I cook you something you really like, and in return you give me a Euro or 50 cents less than it costs, I’m still winning if you are happy with the food that I give you.” As the lunchtime rush subsides, Zisis begins to wind down. The food may not be free like it once was in his grandparents’ courtyard, but the love for hospitality and bringing people together through food continues. As we’re digging through our cones, we watch others picking up their takeaway fish and rushing away. They may not stick around long enough to show their appreciation, but everyone leaves Zisis satisfied. —-

A 4.3 magnitude quake that shook Greece on Monday night was felt in Athens. Witnesses reported a strong tremor in the capital city.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck 25 kilometers (15 miles) northeast of Athens at a depth of 10 kilometers, just before 8.30pm local time.
According to the EMSC – an independent provider of real-time earthquake warnings – the tremor was felt over an area inhabited by 3.6 million people.
Witnesses close to the epicenter near Marathon, in southeast Attica, told the agency it felt like a bomb exploded nearby. “It sounded like someone dropped a bomb and then everything started shaking,” one person who was three kilometers from the epicenter reported.
Reports from central Athens and the suburbs described the quake as strong but quick.
No seen damages in Kolonaki area #Athens. It was perceived as if it had passed a train below the house.

Fire brigade officials said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The quake coincides with huge protests outside parliament in response to a new set of austerity measures.
More than 10,000 people had rallied outside parliament and demonstrators threw petrol bombs and stones at officers, who responded by firing tear gas into the crowd.

Anarchists, who threw petrol bombs and stones, clashed with police in Athens, Greece. At least two police officers were injured.
The clashes took place on Saturday when a group of anarchists gathered in the central Athens neighborhood of Exarcheia to protest the alleged torture of a protester by the police. The incident reportedly took place on September 16 when the protester was arrested.
Anarchists gathered at Alexabdras Avenue and marched in an orderly fashion towards the police headquarters where they claim the torture incident took place. The protesters carried banners and chanted slogans, but as night fell, the demonstration turned violent.

The anarchists attacked police with petrol bombs and stones, and tried to erect barricades out of dumpsters, which they set on fire. At least two officers were slightly injured, and one person was arrested, according to local media reports.

Around 3,000 anti-fascist protesters marched through Athens on Saturday to pay tribute to activist rapper Pavlos Fyssas, killed by a far-right supporter in 2013. Police used tear gas in response to some demonstrators who threw petrol bombs at them.
Anti-fascist groups, representatives of unions, and migrants took part in the protest. People shouted “Pavlos is alive! Crush the Nazis!” Some carried banners demanding Golden Dawn members to be jailed.
The demonstrators, who gathered at Syntagma Square, passed the US Embassy and headed to the headquarters of the far-right, anti-immigrant Golden Dawn, calling for the offices of the party, which holds 17 seats in the Greek parliament, to be shut down.
Clashes erupted after dozens of hooded demonstrators broke off from the peaceful march, according to Reuters. The hooded youths set fire to several cars, damaged an ATM, and threw Molotov cocktails at riot police.
The violence was timed with the end of the main rally, Amna news agency reported. Eight people were detained after protesters hurled petrol bombs towards officers near the main offices of the Golden Dawn late Saturday, Amna said.
“Four years have passed since the murder of Pavlos Fyssas in Keratsini. His killers are still free. The murderers, even despite the lawsuit against them, are not present at all in the court. This is a scandal,” Giorgos Tsiakalos, professor of pedagogy at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, told Ruptly news agency.
The trial should be completed and those responsible for the murder finally brought to justice, Tsiakolos said. “This is the demand of the entire Greek people. Otherwise Golden Dawn will be more and more emboldened.”
In 2013, the fatal stabbing of 34-year-old Pavlos Fyssas, who performed under the stage name Killah P, sparked a series of anti-fascist protests across the country.
Three years later, a Golden Dawn supporter who admitted to killing Pavlos was released from pre-trial detention and placed under house arrest. Golden Dawn denied any direct connection with the incident, although party founder Nikolaos Michaloliakos has stated that he accepted political responsibility for Fyssas’ murder, but claimed there is “no criminal liability.”
The trial of party members is ongoing.

British Airways (BA) has apologised to passengers who were caught up in the ordeal which began on Tuesday last week.
The flight time from London to Athens is less than four hours, but this journey lasted eight times longer.
A faulty cockpit warning light caused the first flight, due to depart at 1.15pm, to be cancelled at Heathrow.
But that was just the first in a long line of problems for passengers.
The second plane couldn’t take off at its scheduled time of 5pm because cabin crew had exceeded their working hours.
Passenger Geoff Lye said the pilot told them it was “the most embarrassing PA announcement” he had made.
After an hour on the plane due to “security issues”, passengers were allowed to disembark.
BA gave them vouchers for a night’s stay in London, before the travellers returned the next day to board another plane.
This flight did depart at 1.40pm, but just moments later the starboard engine caught fire.
Mr Lye told the Evening Standard: “We just took off and there was a bang and it was the engine next to me. There was this huge noise and a judder, and then there were about six more bangs. It was one bang after another.
“I’m an atheist but even I was praying. Our hearts were racing. Passengers behind me said they could see flames kicking out from the engine.”
The pilots shut down the right engine and turned back to Heathrow.
Later that night at 7.40pm on Wednesday, the fourth and final plane took off bound for its destination.
Passengers finally arrived in Athens early Thursday morning.
Mr Lye, a pensioner, said he had been loyally flying BA for nearly 40 years but will now avoid the airline.
He added: “There was no communication and it was unbelievable they could get so much wrong.”
BA confirmed there were four planes involved in the two-day ordeal.
A spokesperson said: “Following a technical fault with the aircraft a replacement was provided, but after crew members went over their allocated working hours, the flight was nightstopped.
“The next day the replacement aircraft returned to Heathrow after a technical fault and another aircraft continued the journey to Athens.
“Our teams on the ground were trying their best to provide customers with as much info as possible when they had it.
We fully appreciate how frustrating this experience has been, and have apologised to our customers for the long delay to their flight.”
