Vitamin B12 becomes pernicious if left to its own devices for too long, so addressing warning signs is of great importance. Failure to do so may result in life-altering complications such as neurological damage and death.

The 8 Best Movies to Buy or Stream This Week: ‘High Flying Bird,’ ‘At Eternity’s Gate’ https://briefnews.eu/the-8-best-movies-to-buy-or-stream-this-week-high-flying-bird-at-eternitys-gate/ https://briefnews.eu/the-8-best-movies-to-buy-or-stream-this-week-high-flying-bird-at-eternitys-gate/#respond Tue, 12 Feb 2019 18:04:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-8-best-movies-to-buy-or-stream-this-week-high-flying-bird-at-eternitys-gate/ This week’s big new streaming release is a Netflix original from one of our favorite directors; Amazon Prime, meanwhile, has added a sleeper you might’ve missed from a Girls co-star. On disc, we’ve got one of this year’s Best Actor nominees, one of this year’s Best Foreign Film nominees, a Best Foreign Film nominee from 1960, a pair of worthwhile catalog titles, and a bit of a cheat.

ON NETFLIX

High Flying Bird: There’s one edit in Steven Soderbergh’s latest that tells you everything you need to know about how he makes a “sports movie”: he takes us riiiiiight up to the moment when a high-pressure round of one-on-one basketball is about to begin — and then cuts away to a rich NBA team owner and his trophy wife boarding their private jet. That juxtaposition underscores what the insightful script by Moonlight’s Tarell Alvin McCraney is really about: not the game but the commodification of the game, and the treatment of its players not as people or even athletes, but assets. Soderbergh, as you’ve probably heard, shot it on an iPhone for maximum flexibility and speed, and it moves like a shot (and looks awfully good), while the great André Holland (the MVP of Soderbergh’s late and lamented The Knick) is terrific as the fast-talking, faster-thinking agent at the story’s center.

ON AMAZON PRIME

Wild Honey Pie!: There’s a particular kind of feeling to fooling around in an afternoon that moves into evening, as drinks are consumed, inhibitions are shed, secrets are told, and desires are indulged — how quickly little flirtations get out of hand. Jamie Adams’ low-key comedy/drama gets that feeling just right, and a lot of other notes besides; it captures the complications of long-term relationships with candor and humor. And its modesty is its virtue, spending just a few tough days with its long-married and increasingly frustrated couple (played with warmth and skill by Jemima Kirke and Richard Elis). A charming little movie, filled with quiet truths.

Shoplifters: Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Palme d’Or winner is a fascinating exercise in the power of perspective in regarding protagonists, though it’s nowhere as dry as that sentence makes it sound. (Put that quote on the DVD case, Magnolia!) It’s the story of a family bound by desperation, scraping by on bits of work and stolen food, and how they take on a new member who seems in even direr straights. “I bet they’re relieved she’s gone,” the mother says of the little girl from the abusive home, and it feels less like a kidnapping than just another shoplifting. Kore-eda works in such a deliberately slice-of-life style, with such assumed sympathy for its protagonists, that the contrast when suddenly seeing this story from the outside is overwhelming; it’s the kind of movie that you don’t realize has snuck up on you until you’ve already been clobbered.

ON BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

At Eternity’s Gate: “When facing a flat landscape, I see eternity,” Vincent van Gogh asks. “Am I the only one who sees it?” Julian Schnabel asks that question (over-asks it a bit, to be quite honest) in this biographical drama, which covers the last few years of Van Gogh’s life — a period in which he felt like a rudderless failure, and went a bit mad. Gate respects and honors the man, played with full-blooded power by Willem Dafoe, but isn’t afraid to puncture him occasionally (often via his interactions with an entertaining Oscar Isaac, as friend/rival Paul Gauguin). This is an ideal match of director and subject; many of these compositions are, yes, painterly, but Schnabel also brings a technician’s understanding of the art and a fellow journeyman’s sympathy, using intensely personal handheld camerawork to capture the artist’s inner life, and not just the immortal work he created. (Includes audio commentary and featurettes.)

The Deuce (Season 2): We don’t usually include TV show sets in this movie round-up, but, I’m sorry, exceptions must be made; the latest by The Wire’s David Simon and George Pelecanos is not only one of the most cinematic shows on the tube, but it’s one steeped in movie history. Dirty movie history, that is, as Season 2 moves into the era of porno chic and New Hollywood grime, while maintaining its keen interest in the history of 42nd Street sex work and the never-ending cycle of NYC clean-up. Its stars all shine, but Maggie Gyllenhaal is particularly memorable this time around, continuing to find the complicated corners of a pornographer with the soul of an artist. The Deuce keeps getting lost in the shuffle of Peak TV and HBO overload; it’s worth catching up with. (Includes featurettes.)

ON BLU-RAY

La Vérité: The one and only Brigitte Bardot is at her absolute coolest in this 1960 Best Foreign Film nominee by director Henri-Georges Clouzot (Diabolique), a new addition to the Criterion Collection. She turns in an eye-openingly tortured and genuinely affecting performance as Dominique, a young woman standing trial for the murder of her lover; her carefree early days and the ramp-up to the crime are dramatized in flashbacks, sumptuously photographed and vibrantly played; it’s an evocative portrait of ‘60s French “café life,” and a potent reminder of this gifted performer’s skill and nuance. (Includes archival interviews and Clouzot documentary.)

The Group: Sidney Lumet — best remembered for the gritty, testosterone-fueled heights of Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, and Prince of the City — was a little out of his element with this 1966 adaptation of Mary McCarthy’s best-selling novel, which details the post-graduate adventures of a tight-knit group of young women. But the film is handsomely mounted (Boris Kaufman’s color cinematography is to die for), and he marshals one hell of a cast, including Candice Bergen, Joan Hackett, Shirley Knight, Larry Hagman, Hal Holbrook, and the future Lucille Bluth, Jessica Walter, whose catty singleton (“I’m appalled by all this vulgar breeding”) is the unqualified scene stealer. (Includes trailer.)

Starsky & Hutch: You’ve probably forgotten this 2004 adaptation of the beloved ‘70s cop show (new on Blu from Warner Archive), and I can’t say I’d blame you; it’s sort of your prototypical early-oughts Frat Pack comedy (including, as it does, starring roles for Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Vince Vaughn), crossed with that other bane of our existence, the classic TV show adaptation. But there’s a lot to like about this one: its absolute refusal to take its source material seriously; the well-honed comedy-team byplay of Stiller and Wilson; stellar supporting turns from Jason Bateman, Juliette Lewis, Fred Williamson, Chris Penn, Patton Oswalt, and (especially) Snoop Dogg as Huggy Bear; and a reminder that, pre-Hangover sequels, director Todd Phillips was more than capable of breathing comic life into stale material. (Includes audio commentary, featurettes, gag reel, and deleted scenes.)

Roman Jews and Israeli rabbis are ‘at war’… over artichoke https://briefnews.eu/roman-jews-and-israeli-rabbis-are-at-war-over-artichoke/ https://briefnews.eu/roman-jews-and-israeli-rabbis-are-at-war-over-artichoke/#respond Tue, 10 Apr 2018 15:30:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roman-jews-and-israeli-rabbis-are-at-war-over-artichoke/

A centuries-old Italian way of cooking artichokes is apparently not to the taste of Israel’s top religious authority, as it has rejected the dish as non-kosher. However, Rome’s Jewish community stand up for their beloved delicacy.

The row over an ordinary vegetable made the headlines after the Chief Rabbinate of Israel denounced the artichoke as not kosher last week. The deep-friend dish, known as Carciofi alla giudia, is popular among Rome’s Jewish community. It became controversial in Israel over its alleged impurity due to the presence of worms.

These cannot be cleaned out of the vegetable in order to make it kosher, and it therefore contradicts Jewish law, the Rabbinate’s Import Division head, Rabbi Yitzhak Arazi told Haaretz.

However, Rome’s Jewish community responded with reluctance to yield to this view. They argued that their type of artichokes were tighter and more compact than the Israeli one, thus making it impossible for worms to penetrate them. Rome’s Jews insisted the vegetable is perfectly orthodox and explained that their recipe requires thorough cleaning in water with lemon, as well as preparation at high temperatures, which gives the worms zero chance of survival.

The simmering conflict has been dubbed by Israeli media as the “artichoke war,” and has caused a split among Italian Jews. Those in Rome are sticking to their 600-year-old tradition of preparing artichokes, while those in Milan have reportedly banned the signature dish from their menus, puzzling their customers.

“I’m a little worried about the souls of all the people that have been eating them over the centuries, I hope nothing bad happens to them,” said Umberto Pavoncello, manager of one of the kosher restaurants in Rome, Nonna Betta, which refused to change their menus.

Heart disease: Those ‘at genetic risk’ less likely to develop illness if they exercise https://briefnews.eu/heart-disease-those-at-genetic-risk-less-likely-to-develop-illness-if-they-exercise/ https://briefnews.eu/heart-disease-those-at-genetic-risk-less-likely-to-develop-illness-if-they-exercise/#respond Mon, 09 Apr 2018 11:46:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heart-disease-those-at-genetic-risk-less-likely-to-develop-illness-if-they-exercise/

PEOPLE “at high genetic risk” of heart disease are 50 per cent less likely to develop the illness if they regular exercise, according to new research. The findings, used data from 482,702 participants from the UK – a group of 40 to 69-year-olds, were surveyed on a range of health factors.

‘At what cost?’ – George Osborne torn apart by Twitter after hailing austerity’s success https://briefnews.eu/at-what-cost-george-osborne-torn-apart-by-twitter-after-hailing-austeritys-success/ https://briefnews.eu/at-what-cost-george-osborne-torn-apart-by-twitter-after-hailing-austeritys-success/#respond Fri, 02 Mar 2018 18:27:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/at-what-cost-george-osborne-torn-apart-by-twitter-after-hailing-austeritys-success/

A celebratory tweet from ex-Tory chancellor George Osborne was attacked on Twitter. The now-Evening Standard editor hailed “the national effort” to decrease public spending – he was soon reminded the cost of his “savings.”

The UK’s public finances have improved but only after the introduction of major austerity measures, most of which have impacted the poorest in Britain. The deficit in the nation’s day-to-day budget was eliminated as Osborne had planned it to be, albeit two years too late to meet his target.

Osborne tweeted on Thursday: “We got there in the end — a remarkable national effort. Thank you.”

The former Prime Minister and Osborne’s friend, David Cameron, also tweeted his support.

The public services include prisons, which are severely understaffed and where prisoners order drugs to their cells. They include local authorities, where services like day centre transport for isolated, vulnerable adults have been cut and day centres for the disabled have been reduced or closed.

Twitter users, many of whom evidently supported Labour, gladly reminded Osborne about the effects his policies have had. Many referred to a shocking study that accused the government of being responsible for thousands of deaths.

A shocking study published in the British Medical Journal estimates that between 2010 and 2017 some 120,000 lives were cut short due to the austerity measures introduced by the Conservatives, first in coalition with the Liberal Democrats and then alone.

The researchers from University College London, Oxford and Cambridge universities, found that mortality rates in the UK had declined steadily from 2001 to 2010, but this reversed sharply and the death rate grew again after austerity came in. The study accused Tories of “economic murder” and said a reversal to pre-2010 levels would cost £25.3 billion.

US-led anti-ISIS coalition admits ‘at least 817’ civilian deaths, says 600 reports still unconfirmed https://briefnews.eu/us-led-anti-isis-coalition-admits-at-least-817-civilian-deaths-says-600-reports-still-unconfirmed/ https://briefnews.eu/us-led-anti-isis-coalition-admits-at-least-817-civilian-deaths-says-600-reports-still-unconfirmed/#respond Thu, 28 Dec 2017 19:36:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-led-anti-isis-coalition-admits-at-least-817-civilian-deaths-says-600-reports-still-unconfirmed/

The US-led authority coordinating military efforts against ISIS has published the latest casualty figures for its airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, insisting the terrorist group “remains a regional and global threat.”

“To date, based on information available, CJTF-OIR assesses at least 817 civilians have been unintentionally killed by Coalition strikes since the start of Operation Inherent Resolve. A total of 603 reports are still open,” said the November update from the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) published Thursday.

Over the past month, the Coalition has assessed 101 reports of potential casualties, judging only nine to be credible. The total civilian death toll has ballooned from16 to 801 a month ago.

Most reports, compiled predominantly by the activist group Airwars, were rejected due to “insufficient evidence” or because they did not match the time and geographical frames of strikes conducted by coalition bombers.

The US-led Coalition is still facing a backlog, with some of the open reports dating back to 2015, though most relate to the fierce and bloody assaults on the cities of Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria earlier this year.

Both cities have since been recaptured from IS (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), and “increased security resulted in historic low Coalition strike numbers in November and December.” But the US-led coalition sounded a note of caution.

“Despite a string of successes by Iraqi Security Forces and Syrian Democratic Forces, much work remains to ensure the enduring defeat of Daesh,” says the statement. “The terrorist organization is still attempting to re-establish regional networks and remains a regional and global threat through its ability to organize or inspire acts of violence against innocent people around the world.”

Since Operation Inherent Resolve – involving mostly European and Arab Muslim states – began in August 2014, the coalition conducted a total of 28,562 strikes, consisting of 57,336 separate engagements.

An Associated Press investigation earlier this month, relying on data from local morgues and NGOs, concluded that the coalition has underestimated the real casualty numbers during the assault on Mosul by a factor of ten. At least 3,200 reportedly died from dropped bombs and mortars in the 9-month battle, while the Coalition acknowledged a death toll of 326. The overall casualties from the battle, won in July, totals at up to 11,000, with investigators saying that IS and the Coalition are responsible for a third of the casualties each, while the causes of death for the rest is yet undetermined.

Number of Islamist radicals ‘at an all-time high’, warns German intelligence chief https://briefnews.eu/number-of-islamist-radicals-at-an-all-time-high-warns-german-intelligence-chief/ https://briefnews.eu/number-of-islamist-radicals-at-an-all-time-high-warns-german-intelligence-chief/#respond Sun, 10 Dec 2017 17:54:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/number-of-islamist-radicals-at-an-all-time-high-warns-german-intelligence-chief/ German intelligence chief Hans-Georg Maassen has said that the security services are facing a record numer of Islamists. The news comes as world leaders announce the defeat of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, potentially prompting an exodus of fighters.

The number of Islamist sympathizers is at an “an all-time high”, Maassen, the president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), said on Sunday. The number has gone up from 9,700 to 10,800 over the past year, with the fundamentalists increasingly abandoning radicalization in mosques in favor of “small conspiratorial circles, primarily on the internet,” which is proving a “particular challenge” for the security services. The splitting up of Islamist groups into smaller factions has also made them more difficult to monitor, Maassen added.

Salafists follow an ultra-conservative, fundamentalist interpretation of Islam, and Salafist organizations such as Hizb ut-Tahrir see Western-style democracy as incompatible with the rule of God, instead seeking to live under Sharia law. This might not necessarily make them prone to terrorism or violence, but their beliefs provide the spiritual basis for groups like al-Qaeda and Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).

Maassen highlighted Salafists coming from Chechnya and the North Caucasus as a particular threat, due to their wide-ranging networks and combat experience both in the insurgency against Russia and their fighting on behalf of Islamic State in the Middle East.

The intelligence chief’s warnings come as world leaders announce the end of the IS uprising in Iraq and Syria. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently declared that almost the entire territory of Syria has now been cleared from terrorists, while on Saturday Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi also announced that IS had been cleared from all Iraqi territory. Similar statements had been made by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in November.

Although its dreams of a caliphate have been shattered, IS continues to pose a threat through its remaining fighters, who may make their way back to their home countries. Moreover, it has affiliate groups in Egypt, Southeast Asia and elsewhere. Around 950 Germans left to fight jihad on behalf on IS after its surge across Iraqi and Syrian territory in 2014. Since then around a third of them have returned, although according to Maassen most of those are women and children.

“We haven’t seen any significant flows of male fighters returning home,” Maassen told the Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA) news agency earlier in December. “We assume that Westerners still fighting with IS to this day intend to stay there until the very end, and will only then seek to settle in Europe once again.”

But the returnees still pose a threat, and Maassen warned about the dangers posed by women and children returning from IS-controlled areas, who may have been radicalized during their time in the self-proclaimed caliphate.

“There are children who have been brainwashed and highly radicalized at ‘schools’ in IS-held areas. It’s a problem for us because many of these kids and teenagers can sometimes be dangerous,” Maassen told DPA.

Massen added that women returning to Germany from Islamist strongholds “had become so radicalized and identify so deeply with IS-ideology that, by all accounts, they must also be identified as jihadis… we have to keep them in our sights.”

Diabetes diet: THIS popular eating regime helped third of ‘at risk’ people avoid type 2 https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-diet-this-popular-eating-regime-helped-third-of-at-risk-people-avoid-type-2-2/ https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-diet-this-popular-eating-regime-helped-third-of-at-risk-people-avoid-type-2-2/#respond Tue, 17 Oct 2017 02:29:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/diabetes-diet-this-popular-eating-regime-helped-third-of-at-risk-people-avoid-type-2-2/

Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed in someone every two minutes in the UK.

There are currently 2.9 million people in the UK living with it, but it is estimated that five million will suffer by 2025.

However, new research published in the British Medical Journal has shown that diet could play an important role in helping ‘at risk’ groups avoid the condition.

Those more susceptible to the condition include people over 40 years, having a family history of the condition, having high blood pressure or being overweight, according to Diabetes UK.

Researchers showed that a third of pre-diabetic patients who followed an eating regime created by Weight Watchers, the weight management provider, escaped being subsequently diagnosed.

They had been referred to the programme by their GP.

Additionally, the programme helped half reduce their risk of developing diabetes or to return their blood sugar levels to normal.

A person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes is strongly affected by lifestyle factors.

However, it can be reduced by weight loss through eating less and exercising more.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) currently recommends that certain commercial weight management providers, such as Weight Watchers, can help people reduce their risk.

However, this is the first time the suggestions have been backed up by evidence.

The Weight Watchers programme looked at in the study involved improving diet quality, reducing portion size and increasing physical activity levels.

Participants also attended 48 weekly group meetings, and at the end of the study the average weight loss was 3.2kg.

“A UK primary care referral route partnered with this commercial weight management provider can deliver an effective diabetes prevention programme,” they write.

“The lifestyle changes and weight loss achieved in the intervention translated into considerable reductions in diabetes risk, with an immediate and significant public health impact.”
