The episode began with a flash-forward to 1985, where we joined Richard and Jingles’ killing spree already in progress. Jingles was beginning to question their murderous way of life, and in a perfect world, I feel like the two serial killers could have settled down Bert and Ernie-style in a nice quiet suburb. Sadly, Richard’s bloodlust — much like Ernie’s — was simply too strong, so he forced poor Jingles to keep cracking skulls. That is, until Jingles got the brilliant idea to expose Richard, resulting in him getting beaten to bloody pulp in the city streets by a mob of angry citizens.

AHS: 1984 RecapWe then jumped to 1989, at which point things got truly insane. Like, coked-up Dynasty levels of crazy. While Xavier and Montana were gleefully murdering anyone foolish enough to stumble into Camp Redwood, Margaret was building a real estate empire by turning infamous horror sites — including Briarcliff Manor! — into profitable tourist attractions. And Trevor, who apparently survived his brush with death, agreed to marry Margaret and reap the benefits of the good life. Besides, as Margaret pointed out, “They can’t make you testify against your spouse.”

That’s when the show’s 100th episode blessed us with a familiar face: Leslie Jordan (as Margaret’s assistant Courtney) arrived to inform his boss that Brooke lost her last appeal and was set to be executed. And speaking of familiar faces, who did Brooke reunite with in prison? Why, none other than Richard, who was horrified to hear what Brooke had done to Montana. “I gutted that bitch from the inside out,” she told him, “and now she’s in hell, licking Satan’s balls.” Richard’s response, naturally, was that that Montana “should be so lucky!”

Richard threw Brooke a lifeline of sorts, explaining that she could survive her trip to the electric chair if she agreed to accept Satan as her master. (A fairly simple exchange by American Horror Story‘s standards, if I’m being honest.) But Brooke refused his offer with a simple “f–k off,” leaving her to walk the green mile without an assist from the man downstairs.

Before receiving her lethal injection, Brooke took one last opportunity to confront Margaret — whom she correctly assumed was watching from behind the two-way mirror — and offered a friendly warning: “You are going to burn for wanting to watch me die.” (Yeah, for that and the million other atrocities she’s committed.) But Brooke’s plan to die with dignity was sidelined by Donna, who snuck into the facility and brought her back to life in the episode’s final moments.

Meanwhile, Margaret took advantage of the recent murders at Camp Redwood by returning to her old stomping — er, stabbing — grounds to throw an expensive food and wine festival for rich, thrill-seeking idiots. In addition to a performance from the one and only Billy Idol, guests were also promised “plenty of spooky and bloody surprises.” (Um… Can someone please explain to me how any of that was a draw?)

Now let’s go back to Mr. Jingles, who managed to do a full 180 with his life, starting anew in Alaska with a wife and son. He assured his new bride that he had moved on from the events of Camp Redwood, that he was free. Or so he thought. After coming home one night to find his wife murdered — possibly by Richard, who received a ‘get out of jail free’ card from Satan — Jingles snapped. He dropped the baby off with his wife’s sister, muttered something about how darkness will always follow him, then stumbled off into the night in full serial-killer garb. You know, just another casual interaction between in-laws.

US & Mexico agree on border policy to keep caravan migrants out while asylum is processed https://briefnews.eu/us-mexico-agree-on-border-policy-to-keep-caravan-migrants-out-while-asylum-is-processed/ https://briefnews.eu/us-mexico-agree-on-border-policy-to-keep-caravan-migrants-out-while-asylum-is-processed/#respond Sun, 25 Nov 2018 01:17:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-mexico-agree-on-border-policy-to-keep-caravan-migrants-out-while-asylum-is-processed/ The incoming Mexican government has reached a preliminary deal with the US, under which asylum seekers will have to wait on the Mexican side of the border while their requests are processed. Thousands are stranded there already.

The plan unambiguously entitled ‘Remain in Mexico’ significantly changes US asylum regulations, which currently allow refugees to wait for the decision on their applications on US soil. The President’s administration also hopes that it will put an end to what Trump decried as a “catch and release” system.

Trump has confirmed the deal on Twitter.

He also threatened again to close the border if it becomes necessary “for any reason.”

“For now, we have agreed to this policy of Remain in Mexico,” Olga Sánchez Cordero, Mexico’s incoming interior minister told the Washington Post. No formal deal has been signed between Mexico City and Washington so far, as the new Mexican administration led by the President-elect Lopez Obrador will only take office only on December 1. Apart from that, many details of the agreement “must still be discussed,” US officials said, as cited by the Washington Post.

Under the new agreement, any potential asylum seekers from Central America will have to wait in Mexico for their scheduled court appearance before an immigration judge as their cases are being processed. After that, they will be escorted to a federal courthouse by US officials but would have to return to Mexico again if the judge fails to issue a final decision on their case. They will be allowed to stay in the US only if granted asylum and will be sent directly to their home countries if rejected.

Less than 10 percent of Central American refugees are eventually granted asylum in the US, WaPo reports, citing immigration statistics. However, as US courts are struggling to cope with a backlog of asylum cases, amounting to some 750,000, the applicants are now able to live and work in the US for years as their claims are being processed. Now, US officials hope that the new deal will drastically change this situation and decrease the incentive for the migrants to seek asylum in the US in the first place.

Mexico, however, sees the plan solely as a “short-term” solution and is concerned about becoming a US “waiting room” at a time when thousands of migrants bound for the US are already stranded in its northern border states.

“The medium- and long-term solution is that people don’t migrate,” Sánchez Cordero said. “Mexico has open arms and everything, but imagine, one caravan after another after another, that would also be a problem for us.”

Nonetheless, Mexico is also apparently seeking to use the situation as a boost for its own economy. Local business leaders are reportedly ready to offer jobs to the migrants, and officials say up to 100,000 jobs are available to Central American asylum seekers.

“We want them to be included in society, that they integrate into society, that they accept the offer of employment that we are giving them,” Sánchez Cordero said. “That they feel taken care of by Mexico in this very vulnerable situation.”

So far, however, the country looks far from an idyllic land of acceptance and inclusivity. The mayor of the border city of Tijuana, which currently hosts some 5,000 migrants from a caravan seeking to cross into the US, has recently declared the situation in his city a “humanitarian crisis.” He also accused the government of leaving them helpless in the face of this challenge, adding that the city residents would not pay for the migrants, who are temporarily settled there.

The situation remains tense. Local residents clashed with police as they staged a rally against the migrants. The mayor also earlier threatened to deport the US-bound migrants.

On the other side of the border, US troops erected barricades and barbed-wire fences to prevent the migrants from illegally crossing into the US. Trump also authorized the border troops to use lethal force if needed.

Meanwhile, the new deal might, in fact, lead to a spike in illegal crossings into the US, with the number of such attempts prevented by the US authorities already reaching 60,000 last month, according to WaPo.

  • The US is reportedly close to reaching a deal with Mexico that would allow for asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims are processed.
  • The plan appears to be an attempt to end the practice of “catch and release.”
  • If successfully reached, it will reportedly be implemented in a matter of weeks.

The White House and Mexican officials from the country’s incoming administration are reportedly close to a deal that would turn Mexico into “a waiting room for America’s asylum system,” according to a report from The Washington Post.

The deal would place migrants seeking asylum in the US in Mexico while they await judgment by US courts, according to Mexcian officials and members of president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s transition team.

The Trump effect? Number of US citizens seeking asylum in Canada soars by 500% https://briefnews.eu/the-trump-effect-number-of-us-citizens-seeking-asylum-in-canada-soars-by-500/ https://briefnews.eu/the-trump-effect-number-of-us-citizens-seeking-asylum-in-canada-soars-by-500/#respond Thu, 15 Nov 2018 04:50:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-trump-effect-number-of-us-citizens-seeking-asylum-in-canada-soars-by-500/ Trump seems to have accomplished what political Hollywood never has – convincing thousands of Americans to flee the country. Driven by his policies, more US citizens sought asylum in Canada last year than have in decades.

Americans were the third-largest group to seek asylum in Canada in 2017, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, their numbers only surpassed by Nigerians and Haitians. A total of 2,550 US citizens applied for Canadian asylum in 2017 – an eye-popping sixfold increase from the previous year, and more than at any other time in the last quarter-century.

Immigration experts claim most of the new arrivals are US-born children of Haitian parents hoping to avoid being separated from their families by Trump’s repeal of the Temporary Protected Status that was granted to 59,000 Haitians after 2010’s catastrophic earthquake. Haitians remaining in the US after July 2019 face deportation.

The Guardian humanized those numbers with the story of a family who, inspired by the uplifting tweets of Justin Trudeau, joined over 20,000 would-be refugees in crossing the border on foot at Quebec’s infamous Roxham Road, taking advantage of a now-popular loophole in the Safe Third Country Agreement between Canada and the US that normally forces refugees to apply for asylum in the first country in which they arrive.

Choosing one’s permanent home based on its leader’s tweets is unusual, to say the least, though it would certainly cut down on attempted immigration into the US if prospective migrants had to read through @realDonaldTrump’s musings.

Trudeau has since backpedaled quite a bit on his arms-wide-open approach, partially because of the influx of migrants through Canada’s southern neighbor, most of whom are ineligible for asylum. Canadian public safety minister Ralph Goodale reminded aspiring migrants earlier this year that there is no “free ticket” into Canada, while the border agency wants to increase deportations of denied asylum claimants by 35 percent. Trudeau’s government has even sent officials to Haiti and Nigeria to tell wannabe immigrants to stay at home.

Perhaps he isn’t so different from Trump after all. The US president addressed the thousands of migrants currently streaming northward in caravans through Mexico, telling them they would not be allowed in unless they applied for entry through legal channels.

So many Americans considered the decision to flee north on election night 2016 that they actually crashed Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration website. Leading the charge were vocally anti-Trump celebrities like Lena Dunham and Barbra Streisand. While most stars who fail to follow through on their public ultimatums act like they never promised to leave, Streisand recently reminded the world of her broken promise during the midterms. “Do I want to move to Canada? I don’t know,” she said again, complaining to a New York Times reporter that Trump was making her fat. As for Dunham, she’s supposedly writing a screenplay about a Syrian refugee – no word yet on whether they end up in Canada.

A person with apparent mental health issues, believed to be a citizen of Poland, has been detained as he tried to enter the premises of the Russian embassy in Germany to request asylum, the diplomatic mission in Berlin said.

“According to preliminary data, a foreign national (allegedly a Polish citizen) parked his car with a Polish number plate next to the gate of the embassy located at Unter den Linden. After getting out of the car, he attempted to enter the territory of the diplomatic mission and request that he be granted protection. The police officers, who were keeping watch nearby, detained him in a timely manner. There is a suspicion that he is mentally ill,” the embassy said, in a statement cited by Sputnik.

The Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security have put out a joint rule stating that arrivals who break any rules the White House imposes will be barred from seeking asylum. It cites “too many meritless asylum claims from aliens who place a tremendous burden on our resources, preventing us from being able to expeditiously grant asylum to those who truly deserve it.”

An online memo to be published on Friday clarifies that the interim rule aims to “channel inadmissible aliens to ports of entry, where they would be processed in a controlled, orderly, and lawful manner.”

President Trump himself is expected to sign an order specifying the new limitations on arriving migrants early on Friday, according to reports.

Democratic opposition is all but guaranteed, with the party energized after regaining control of the House of Representatives in Tuesday’s midterm elections. A group of Honduran migrants already filed a lawsuit last week, alleging the Trump administration was violating their due process rights by restricting where they could declare their intention to seek asylum.

The president, who referred to the migrant caravans as an “invasion” in the run-up to Tuesday’s election and sent thousands of troops to the southern border, has been accused of fearmongering for his warnings that “hardened criminals” and “unknown Middle Easterners” are lurking among the migrants. Several TV networks and Facebook pulled a Republican Party campaign ad featuring a convicted cop-killer who had been deported several times, after receiving complaints that it was racist.

The asylum crackdown is only one of many solutions Trump has proposed to control the border, which he made the central issue of both his presidential campaign and the 2018 midterms. He is a vocal critic of so-called “catch and release” policies that allow arriving migrants to stay in the US until their asylum hearings, which can take years. Last month, he claimed the US would build “very nice” tent cities to house asylum-seekers to prevent them from disappearing before their cases could be heard. He has also expressed his intention of ending birthright citizenship.

This year saw a record number of new deportation filings – the highest since 1992, when Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse began tracking the data. The most common reason for new deportation was “entry without inspection,” which accounted for 42.5 percent and included individuals who entered the country without declaring themselves to immigration officials. Mexicans were the most frequently deported nationality, at 26 percent, while half the deportees hailed from Central America – either El Salvador, Guatemala or Honduras.

The number of migrants making asylum claims, which require them to cite “credible fear” of persecution in their home country, has jumped 2,000 percent over the last decade, though the majority of such claims are rejected.

Trump told Fox News he plans to build tent cities to hold the thousands of Central American asylum-seekers currently trekking through Mexico on their way to the US border. While the tents will be “very nice” – everything Trump builds is, in his mind – he hopes that holding the migrants in these tent cities until their asylum hearings will deter additional caravans from making the crossing.

Current practice, derided by Trump and others as “catch and release,” allows asylum-seekers to stay in the US until their hearings, which can be years after they cross the border given the huge backlog of immigration cases.

Many new arrivals, understandably, never turn up for the hearing, having successfully blended into American society and not wishing to risk being turned back to their country of origin. Restricting them to tent cities – no matter how “nice” – ensures they will be present at their hearing, where – according to Fox News host Laura Ingraham – 80 percent will be sent home.

While the migrant caravans are still weeks away from the border, Trump has made headlines with his decision to send 5,200 troops and dozens of “air assets” to the US-Mexico border as part of “Operation Faithful Patriot.”

The military units will stake out 26 crossing points across California, Arizona, and Texas and await the arrival of the two caravans. They join over 2,000 National Guard personnel already guarding the border and will additionally construct fences and anti-vehicles in an effort to “harden” the border against the migrant “invasion.”

In a Department of Defense press conference on Monday, US Customs and Border Protection commissioner Kevin McAleenan urged migrants fleeing violence to accept Mexico’s offer of asylum and employment authorization within its borders and cease movement northward, admonishing those seeking employment in the US to return to their homes and apply for the proper documentation.

We’re gonna have tents, they’re gonna be very nice, and they’re gonna wait, and if they don’t get asylum, they get out.

An Israeli man has avoided jail time and instead been sentenced to 100 days community service for his role in a mob beating of an Eritrean asylum seeker mistaken for a terrorist in the aftermath of an attack.

An Israeli man has avoided jail time and instead been sentenced to 100 days community service for his role in a mob beating of an Eritrean asylum seeker mistaken for a terrorist in the aftermath of an attack.

The Beersheba District Court sentenced David Muial, 33, on Wednesday, for his participation in the 2015 mob beating of Haftom Zarhum, 29, as he lay bleeding on the floor of a bus station.

In October 2015, Zarhum was an innocent bystander during a bus station gun attack by an Arab Israeli. The attack left four people dead and 10 wounded. He was shot during the ensuing chaos by a security guard who mistook him for being involved in the attack.

As he bled out on the bus station floor, Zarhum was set upon by an agitated crowd who beat him repeatedly with blows to the head while others, including Muial, dropped a metal bench on him. He died from his wounds in hospital with an autopsy recording the gunshot wound as the primary cause of death.

Footage of the incident shows that a total of nine people participated in the attack on Zarhum, however, only four people have since faced charges.

Muial, the first of the men to receive a sentence, was convicted of “abusing the helpless” rather than the more serious charge of aggravated assault, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years. He also has to pay a 2,000 shekel ($ 560) reparations to Zarhum’s family and received an eight month probation period. His lawyer had asked for a lenient sentence.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the Justice Ministry has indicated that Muial’s sentence would be the most lenient, due to his fears at the time that the victim was indeed a terrorist.

The remaining defendants – Evyatar Damari, soldier Yaakov Shamba and Israel Prisons Service employee Ronen Cohen –  are still on trial for the more serious charge of aggravated battery, and the ministry expects them to receive tougher sentences.

A fifth suspect, another prison guard, was cleared of criminal charges but recommended for disciplinary charges.

Zarhum’s family are also in the process of suing the state over the incident, seeking a total of $ 780,000 in damages. According to Reuters, they allege that police and the security company guarding the bus station were negligent during the incident, which occurred during a wave of Palestinian stabbing and shooting attacks in Israel.

Germany’s migration chief is sacked amid an asylum agency fraud scandal – but is the problem solved? https://briefnews.eu/germanys-migration-chief-is-sacked-amid-an-asylum-agency-fraud-scandal-but-is-the-problem-solved/ https://briefnews.eu/germanys-migration-chief-is-sacked-amid-an-asylum-agency-fraud-scandal-but-is-the-problem-solved/#respond Sun, 17 Jun 2018 04:59:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/germanys-migration-chief-is-sacked-amid-an-asylum-agency-fraud-scandal-but-is-the-problem-solved/ The ousted head of Germany’s refugee agency was central to an unfolding asylum application fraud scandal, but firing her won’t fix core “structural problems” in the country’s migration system, a geopolitical analyst has told RT.

After serving just 18 months as head of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), Jutta Cordt was fired this week by Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, after an internal review discovered that the agency’s branch in the city of Bremen had violated legal and internal regulations for the approval of asylum applications. The decision was quietly announced on Friday, and Rainer Rothfuss, a geopolitical analyst and professor at Tübingen University’s Institute of Geography in Baden-Württemberg, feels the sacking was long overdue.

“It is quite late now that Horst Seehofer tries to find the responsible or the culpable person at the top of the BAMF organization,” Rothfuss said. “He should have broken up the coalition already in 2015 to protest against Angela Merkel for breaking the German laws and letting migrants flow into our country.”

In April, it was revealed that a former BAMF official at the Bremen office was under investigation on suspicion of taking bribes from at least 1,200 asylum seekers, starting in 2013. Other officials at the agency were also probed for possibly having taken part in the scheme. They include an interpreter and three lawyers. After reviewing some 1,371 asylum cases from 2013 to 2017, an internal audit allegedly found the Bremen branch responsible for violating the law in 142 instances, Der Spiegel reported. In 54 percent of the Bremen decisions there had been no admissible request. In about 40 percent of cases, the identity of the asylum seekers was not clarified, the report said.

In the wake of the scandal, BAMF launched additional probes at other locations. Meanwhile, the scandal only deepened the problem with the country’s asylum system and has threatened Angela’s Merkel fragile ruling coalition, which barely formed a government in March, after the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) cruised into the Bundestag in last year’s national elections. With some 50,000 applications backlogged, many in Germany wonder how the refugee crisis will be sorted.

“Just changing the head of the office does not solve the problem. The problem is of a structural nature. It is just the sheer number of asylum applications which overwhelm those structures,” Rothfuss explained to RT. “It is not the right decision now by Horst Seehofer just to exchange Jutta Cordt again and put a new person in charge because the basic problem remains the same.”

More than a million migrants –from predominantly Muslim countries– have entered Germany since the refugee crisis erupted in 2015, fueling strong anti-migrant sentiments and protests against Merkel’s open-door policy. A number of terrorist attacks involving refugees followed, as well the notorious sexual harassment incidents during the 2015 New Year’s Eve celebrations in Cologne and other cities.

Some 62 percent of Germans polled by Infratest dimap are in favor of turning back undocumented migrants at the border. The poll, released on Friday, also showed that some 86 percent want faster deportations of rejected asylum applicants.
