The purchase is part of a plan to send two Saudi astronauts to the International Space Station.

  • Saudi Arabia plans to send its first female astronaut into space, Axiom confirmed to Insider.
  • The country bought two seats on a SpaceX ship as part of a plan to send Saudi astronauts to the ISS.
  • The astronauts will be the first from the nation to travel to space with a private company.

Saudi Arabia plans to send its first female astronaut to the International Space Station on board a SpaceX ship, Axiom, the company that made the deal, confirmed to Insider.

A representative for Axiom Space said the company was collaborating with the Saudi Space Commission to train two astronauts and prepare them to conduct research in space.

The purchase is part of a larger plan to send two Saudi astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), three anonymous sources confirmed to Reuters.

The sources added that the deal with Houston-based Axiom Space, a private company, was signed earlier this year.

"Space belongs to all of humanity, which is one of the reasons Axiom Space is pleased to welcome our new partnership with the Saudi Space Commission to train and fly Saudi astronauts, including the first female Saudi astronaut," Michael Suffredini, Axiom Space's CEO, said at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Paris.

The two seats are on board a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, which will travel to the ISS, where the Saudi astronauts are expected to stay for about a week, per Reuters.

The astronauts will be the first from the nation to travel to space with a private company. The mission will be the second space trip arranged by Axiom, according to Reuters' sources.

Axiom operates missions to and from the ISS and is also building the first commercial destination in space, Axiom Station, according to its website. The company launched the first private astronaut mission to the ISS in April. The four-man civilian crew also traveled on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spaceship, per NASA.

Private space companies such as Axiom are infringing on a uniquely diplomatic position between the US and other nations, which was traditionally controlled by NASA, Reuters reported.

Earlier this month, Axiom announced it had signed a deal with Turkey's government to send the first Turkish astronaut to space.

Russian cosmonauts were also set to fly to the ISS with SpaceX under a new NASA deal with Russia's space agency, Reuters reported.

SpaceX and the Saudi Space Commission did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment made outside normal working hours.

Don’t look at social distancing as forced imprisonment in your own home — think of it as an extended opportunity to figure out who the remaining Masked Singers are!

The Group C section of the competition continued this week, with Astronaut, Swan, T-Rex, Rhino and Night Angel belting their hearts out (or trying to) in order to get at least one more episode of the reality show under their belts.

After her rendition of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ “I Hate Myself for Loving You” ended with a highly weird declaration of adoration for judge Ken Jeong, Swan’s Masked Singer run was over: The big bird was revealed to be Shake It Up/Famous in Love star Bella Thorne. (Read a full recap, and check out what Thorne had to say about her final number here.)

Now, ahead of Episode 9, it’s time to closely look at who’s left and try to discern who’s who. We’ve pulled together a large number of clues from the Masked Singer episodes that have already aired. The ultimate goal: Guess who’s beneath those costumes before they’re gone from the show.

All season long, we’ll update the gallery at right (click here for direct access) with information gleaned from the current week’s show, and we’ll add our (and some of your) thoughts about who’s beneath the costumes. So go ahead and click through, then make sure to log your thoughts, theories and evolving guesses in the comments section!

Patrick J. Adams Suiting Up as Astronaut John Glenn for National Geographic Series The Right Stuff https://briefnews.eu/patrick-j-adams-suiting-up-as-astronaut-john-glenn-for-national-geographic-series-the-right-stuff/ https://briefnews.eu/patrick-j-adams-suiting-up-as-astronaut-john-glenn-for-national-geographic-series-the-right-stuff/#respond Fri, 31 May 2019 17:47:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/patrick-j-adams-suiting-up-as-astronaut-john-glenn-for-national-geographic-series-the-right-stuff/

Patrick J. Adams‘ next TV workplace will have a slightly different dress code. The former Suits star — who recently left the USA Network drama after seven seasons — will play Maj. John Glenn in National Geographic’s The Right Stuff, based on Tom Wolfe’s 1979 non-fiction book of the same name. Glenn was famously the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962.

According to a release from National Geographic, “The first season of The Right Stuff, which uses Wolfe’s book as its starting point, starts at the height of the Cold War. To combat a national sentiment of fear and decline, the U.S. government conceives of NASA’s Project Mercury, igniting a space race with the Soviets and making instant celebrities of a handful of the military’s adrenaline-fueled test pilots. These individuals, who come to be known as the Mercury Seven, are forged into heroes long before they have achieved a single heroic act. At the heart of a historic drama populated by deeply human characters, two arch-rivals — Glenn and Shepard — jockey to be the first man in space.”

Beyond that, “subsequent seasons of The Right Stuff will carry through to the epochal Apollo Space Program, where humankind saw one of its greatest achievements — man setting foot on the moon — and missions beyond.”

Mark Lafferty (Castle Rock) will serve as showrunner, executive-producing alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson and Will Staples. David Nutter (Game of Thrones) will direct and executive-produce the first episode. Michael Hampton is also involved via Appian Way.

Two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank is signing on for a star-filled new series: She’ll lead Away, Netflix’s upcoming astronaut drama, TVLine has learned.

The series focuses on Emma Green (Swank), an American astronaut with a husband and teen daughter. Emma is the commander of an international space crew that undertakes a very dangerous mission. Per the show’s official logline, the series is “about hope, humanity and how we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things.”

The drama hails from Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood), who will executive-produce and write alongside Jessica Goldberg (The Path). Goldberg also will serve as showrunner. Other EPs include Ed Zwick (Nashville, My So-Called Life), Matt Reeves (Felicity), Andrew Hinderaker (Pure Genius, Penny Dreadful) and Swank. Universal Television will produce.

Netflix greenlit Away‘s 10-episode first season in June 2018.

In addition to films like Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby, both of which earned her an Academy Award, Swank’s TV credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Growing Pains; Beverly Hills, 90210. She also played Gail Getty, mother to the kidnapped John Paul Getty III, in Season 1 of FX’s Trust.

How a Fake Astronaut Prepares for Life on Mars https://briefnews.eu/how-a-fake-astronaut-prepares-for-life-on-mars-2/ https://briefnews.eu/how-a-fake-astronaut-prepares-for-life-on-mars-2/#respond Fri, 04 Jan 2019 11:32:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-a-fake-astronaut-prepares-for-life-on-mars-2/ An editorial collaboration that celebrates the biggest ideas in our world. Join us every week for new stories and mind-bending video.

Angelo Vermeulen’s four-month vacation to Hawaii was unlike any other. Rather than splaying out on a beach, he sat locked inside a bubble atop the Mauna Loa volcano. Instead of lounging around in a Speedo, he fumbled around dry lava in a space suit. And forget feasting on juicy tropical fruits; he gnawed on prepackaged instant food. So goes the life of a fake astronaut.

Three years later, Vermeulen — a volunteer crew commander of HI-SEAS, a NASA-funded Mars simulation — has rejoined society and no longer dons a space suit just to step outside. And in the time since his bleak summer getaway, the long-haul race to the real Mars has sped light-years ahead. NASA is shooting for the 2030s, with “deep-space habitation facilities,” says NASA spokeswoman Kathryn Hambleton. Vermeulen is optimistic on all fronts: “It might take 50 years or it might take 500 years, but it’s going to happen,” says the 44-year-old TED senior fellow in his TED Talk. Yet whether the trip takes decades or millennia, Vermeulen’s radical “pre-enactment” in Hawaii may prove more crucial to reaching “the big-picture dream of humankind,” he says.

Few are “space-suited” for the dual task of philosophizing about the future of space colonization and ensuring we aren’t incinerated by cosmic radiation in the process. Vermeulen is a space systems researcher — a biologist who’s finishing up research on interstellar travel for his second Ph.D., at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands — and when not digging in on the science of astrobiology, he brings his space passion to Earth, serving as a veritable Marina Abramovic of terrestrial-astral performance. He designs art installations like Biomodd, which uses algae to “cool its computer processors,” and spacecraft sculptures such as Seeker, a global community project of starship prototypes. His work is exhibited worldwide, from New York to the Philippines, with the goal of encouraging the public to more rigorously explore the future of humans in space.

Vermeulen is so committed to his interactive art that he once locked himself, along with five other artists, inside one of his creations on exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia. “We test what we build,” he says simply. The European Space Agency came knocking, asking Vermeulen to consult on MELiSSA, an artificial ecosystem for long-term space missions.

Growing up in tiny Belgium, hardly a space giant, Vermeulen never considered a career as an astronaut. But at age 8, when his parents gifted him his first microscope, he started cultivating an interest in ecology. He earned his first Ph.D., in biology, from the University of Leuven in Belgium, where he analyzed the plant and animal specimens he collected during nature walks. Today, Vermeulen has moved well beyond the microscopic, with bigger plans on the horizon. Getting to Mars is merely half the battle, he says. Humans must be psychologically ready to deal with the isolation and limited resources, or even endless boredom. What’s there to do for fun in deep space? How should we spend our time? “I really don’t think the human mind is ready,” Vermeulen says with a shrug.

Neither are our wallets, it seems. Government funding for space has plummeted, from 4.4 percent of America’s federal budget in 1966 to 0.5 percent today. Plus, Mars is such a long-term, expensive project, it’s vital that the Mars missions are backed not just by dollars but also by public support. It’s precisely why we need more scientists — and yes, artist-scientists, says Mark Lupisella, an engineer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Granted, others are already imagining our future in space, including wunderkind Elon Musk, who’s planning for a permanent human settlement on Mars by 2025 (SpaceX didn’t respond to requests for comment; their heads are probably in the clouds). Creative types like Vermeulen, though, can evince the wonkiness of space habitation and interstellar travel in ways an engineer can’t, and “better tap into all of the stuff that motivates and moves people, emotionally, philosophically and spiritually,” Lupisella says.

Tg14 100714 rl5d1802

Along with his doctoral research on starship development, Vermeulen is pondering not only how to get to the Red Planet but how to live there once landing. For him, it’s not enough to survive the lethal danger that awaits humans in deep space; the threats to soul and psyche must also be addressed — what, he asks, will humanity do as it redefines itself, its notions of social life, community, identity, leisure and recreation in zero gravity? Vermeulen’s must-have item for space is “a healthy dose of autonomy” — that’s what makes us human, he says. Ironic, coming from a man who keeps trapping himself inside strange, tiny structures.

But if NASA, SpaceX and the rest of the space-braving crew don’t properly prepare for how we’ll stay mentally grounded as well as reorient our social identity (“the culture of Earth”) in a radically new environment, we’re doomed long before those spacecrafts ever reach their launchpads. “Psychologically, emotionally and socially, this could very well become a big disaster,” Vermeulen says.

He would know. Stepping forth from his self-imposed volcanic isolation of 120 days, Vermeulen was blinded by the explosive green and blue hues of life on planet Earth, “the beauty of vision,” he says. For him, this is home sweet home — if only he could take it with him to Mars.

You can’t win: Ex-top astronaut apologizes to Twitter for citing Churchill, sparks more fuss https://briefnews.eu/you-cant-win-ex-top-astronaut-apologizes-to-twitter-for-citing-churchill-sparks-more-fuss/ https://briefnews.eu/you-cant-win-ex-top-astronaut-apologizes-to-twitter-for-citing-churchill-sparks-more-fuss/#respond Mon, 08 Oct 2018 14:09:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-cant-win-ex-top-astronaut-apologizes-to-twitter-for-citing-churchill-sparks-more-fuss/

Quoting Winston Churchill seems harmless enough, but a former NASA astronaut found out the hard way that it’s impossible to please everyone on Twitter, after apologizing for citing the revered British leader.

Scott Kelly, who has made multiple trips into space, issued an apology on Sunday after being hounded by furious netizens about a tweet in which he quoted British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

“One of the greatest leaders of modern times, Sir Winston Churchill said, ‘in victory, magnanimity.’ I guess those days are over,” Kelly tweeted, in an apparent commentary on Brett Kavanaugh’s contentious confirmation to the Supreme Court.

But some responses to this nugget of wisdom were far from charitable.

“Churchill was a mass murderer. His actions led to the death of millions due to famine in bengal state of erstwhile India during WW2. He compared indians to beasts. He may be a hero for a lot of u, not for indians like me,” one enraged netizen wrote.

“I am very surprised that of all people you endorse a racist bigot who was directly responsible for millions of deaths in Bengal famine of 1943,” another Twitter user fired back. Others pointed to Churchill’s racism and full-bodied support for colonialism.

Startled by the angry reactions to his somewhat innocuous tweet, Kelly posted a follow-up in which he promised to better “educate” himself about Churchill.

“Did not mean to offend by quoting Churchill. My apologies. I will go and educate myself further on his atrocities, racist views which I do not support. My point was we need to come together as one nation. We are all Americans. That should transcend partisan politics,” he wrote.

But like all tragicomedies that unfold on Twitter, his apology created another wave of fuss.

“Are you kidding me? You have nothing to apologize for. Churchill was a great man. We live in crazy times,” one user replied.

“Never apologize when you quote someone who defeated Hitler. Never,” another commented, apparently unaware of the Soviet Union’s existence.

Even a few blue checkmarks weighed in, urging Kelly to rethink his apology.

But at least Kelly accurately quoted Churchill – no easy task when the internet is awash with bogus quotes attributed to the famous British leader. In August, Texas Governor Greg Abbott tweeted a meme that claimed Churchill once said that leftists would be the “fascists of the future.” In response, the Twitterati then flooded the governor with memorable and extremely fake “Churchill” quotes.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield says we could have gone to Mars decades ago — here’s why we haven’t https://briefnews.eu/astronaut-chris-hadfield-says-we-could-have-gone-to-mars-decades-ago-heres-why-we-havent/ https://briefnews.eu/astronaut-chris-hadfield-says-we-could-have-gone-to-mars-decades-ago-heres-why-we-havent/#respond Sun, 08 Jul 2018 15:11:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/astronaut-chris-hadfield-says-we-could-have-gone-to-mars-decades-ago-heres-why-we-havent/ Hadfield TEDTED Conference / Flickr

  • Former astronaut Chris Hadfield has flown on three space missions and spent nearly half a year in orbit.
  • People could have landed on Mars “decades ago” if we’d really wanted to, Hadfield said, but such missions may have been deadly due to the state of rocket and spaceship technologies.
  • Even if NASA, SpaceX, and Blue Origin soon build capable rocket ships for Mars, Hadfield isn’t sure they’d be safe enough.

Chris Hadfield is best-known for recording David Bowie’s song “Space Oddity” in zero-gravity. But his real accomplishment is an incredible amount of space travel.

Between 1995 and 2013, Hadfield flew inside two NASA space shuttles and a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, lived aboard the International Space Station, and spent a total of 166 days in orbit.

Apollo 12 astronaut Alan Bean dies https://briefnews.eu/apollo-12-astronaut-alan-bean-dies/ https://briefnews.eu/apollo-12-astronaut-alan-bean-dies/#respond Sun, 27 May 2018 14:56:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apollo-12-astronaut-alan-bean-dies/

It’s a somber day for spaceflight, as NASA astronaut Alan Bean has died at the age of 86 after falling ill during a trip. He was the fourth person to walk on the Moon, flying aboard Apollo 12, and proved crucial to humanity’s understanding of its closest celestial neighbor. He was the only geologist to have walked on the Moon and provided an immensely valuable collection of samples that inform lunar geology to this day. He also led the second of three Skylab crews, staying a then record-setting 59 days as he survayed both the Earth’s resources and the Sun.

After he retired in 1981, Bean carried on his legacy in a unique way: painting. He spent the past four decades creating art themed around space exploration, including Apollo-based paintings that would include moon dust and parts of his mission patches. It was his way of making his space adventures relatable to people who might never go. Between this and his missions, it’s likely that Bean’s legacy will persist for a long while.

  • Retired NASA astronaut Scott Kelly had four missions in space, including a 340-day trip aboard the International Space Station in 2015-2016.
  • On our “Success” podcast, he describes himself as a distracted kid who figured out his life later than his identical twin brother Mark, who also became an astronaut.
  • He shared some of his best moments in space, like seeing the entirety of planet Earth, as well as the worst, being helpless when his sister-in-law Gabrielle Giffords was shot in 2011.

When Scott Kelly talks about flying into space, he sounds like a guy talking about his favorite hobby, with the same tone someone would use for golf or fishing.

As a NASA astronaut, Kelly made four trips to space, including spending 340 days onboard the International Space Station. Meanwhile, his identical twin brother — and fellow astronaut — Mark was on Earth. Since then, scientists have been watching how differently the two have aged. In March, they said that Kelly’s DNA had changed by 7% following his year-long trip.

Scientists explore using astronaut poop to make space food https://briefnews.eu/scientists-explore-using-astronaut-poop-to-make-space-food/ https://briefnews.eu/scientists-explore-using-astronaut-poop-to-make-space-food/#respond Tue, 30 Jan 2018 15:28:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scientists-explore-using-astronaut-poop-to-make-space-food/

Astronauts aboard the ISS drink recycled pee for a reason: we can only bring so much food and water to to space. Imagine how much more we need to take for that year-long journey to Mars. Since bringing more resources means higher costs — the heavier a spacecraft is, the more fuel it needs, after all — scientists are looking to find ways to make self-sustaining vehicles. A team of researchers from Penn State University, for instance, have developed a method to make space food with astronaut poop.

Disgusting? Well, the team’s technique doesn’t exactly turn the feces itself into food. Instead, it uses microbes to break down solid and liquid human waste with anaerobic digestion, a process that doesn’t consume precious oxygen, similar to what happens inside our stomach when we eat. During digestion, the fecal material produces methane, which is then fed to bacteria (Methylococcus capsulatus) naturally found in soil and already used to make animal pellets using a microbial reactor.

When the researchers tested their technique using artificial poop, the end result was biomass that’s 52 percent protein and 36 percent fats. That’s what future spacefarers would eat — and what Mark Watney probably would’ve used as dip for his potatoes if he just had the equipment. Team leader and Penn State professor Christopher House admits that “[i]t’s a little strange,” but it’s like “Marmite or Vegemite where you’re eating a smear of ‘microbial goo.'” We’ll bet space-poop goo is also an acquired taste.

In addition to being packed with nutrients, the goo is also relatively fast to make: researchers said they managed to remove 49 to 59 percent of the solids in the waste material within 13 hours during their tests. That’s much faster than current waste management treatment methods, and as House said, it’s “faster than growing tomatoes or potatoes.”

The researchers also found potential food sources other than Methylococcus capsulatus during their tests. When they tried growing microbes in either an alkaline or a high-heat environment to prevent the growth of pathogens, they discovered that a bacterium called Halomonas desiderata (15 percent protein and 7 percent fats) can thrive in the harsh conditions. Another species of bacteria called Thermus aquaticus can live in environments reaching 158 degrees Fahrenheit, as well. With a nutritional value that’s 61 percent protein and 16 percent fats, it’s yet another possible source of microbial goo grub for future astronauts.
