FYI: Consider this your unofficial first look at CBS’ upcoming Murphy Brown revival.
In addition to star Candice Bergen, who first posted the group shot, OG cast members Faith Ford, Joe Regalbuto and Grant Shaud are also pictured. One noticeably absent cast member is Jake McDorman, who snagged the role of Murphy Brown’s grown-up son Avery.
Check out the reunion photo below, then drop a comment with your hopes for Murphy Brown‘s return to television.

In terms of blockbuster franchises, Paramount Pictures has Mission: Impossible, Star Trek, Transformers, Terminator, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the Cloverfield movies to its name. Some of those are more viable than others, so it makes sense that the studio is looking to add some more surefire winners to its library. One of the properties they’re betting on is a series of Ology movies, films that will be based on popular young adult “encyclopedias” that explore concepts like “Alienology” and “Spyology.”
A writers’ room has been put in place to develop scripts for potential movie adaptations, but there’s a catch: the person running the whole thing doesn’t exactly inspire a lot of confidence.
Yep, that sinking feeling you might feel in the pit of your stomach is justified: the man in charge of this franchise is Akiva Goldsman, the Oscar-winning writer of A Beautiful Mind – but also the guy who’s written films like Batman & Robin, Insurgent, The 5th Wave, Rings, and The Dark Tower. Paramount loves working with him for some reason – he has a production deal set up at the studio, and he was the one responsible for spearheading the writers’ room for the Transformers Cinematic Universe.
Deadline reports that Goldsman is at it again, this time with the Ology movies, and he’s hired six other writers to help out: Michael Chabon (John Carter), Christina Hodson (Bumblebee), Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel), Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Lindsey Beer (Kingkiller Chronicle), and Joe Robert Cole (Black Panther, The People vs. O.J. Simpson).
The outlet says the current hope is that each writer will come up with a take on one of the books and create a treatment before moving on to eventually writing the screenplay. If all goes well, they’ll end up with seven movies with connected stories (Goldsman is writing one of the scripts himself).
I’ve never read these books, but they sound like fun. Here’s the synopsis of Oceaonology, just to give you an idea of what these writers are dealing with:
Follow the fascinating journey of Captain Nemo and explore the ocean’s wonders, both real and imagined…or are they?
What if a sixteen-year-old assistant traveled aboard the storied Nautilus, the narwhal-shaped submarine of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? And what if he were the sole survivor of the ill-fated voyage and went on to relay his adventures to a certain…Jules Verne? Find this brave young man’s own account in the lavishly illustrated Oceanology, a tale of an 1866 voyage of discovery that investigates diving bells and shipwrecks; coral reefs and ice canyons; sharks, giant octopi, and luminous sea monsters; underwater volcanoes, and even the legendary island of Atlantis.
The books have sold 18 million copies worldwide, and cover a variety of different topics: Alienology, Dungeonology, Spyology, Oceanology, Knightology, Dinosaurology, Dragonology, Monsterology, Vampireology, Egpytology, and Mythology.
Paramount is hoping to build a “live-action family franchise universe” here, but since Goldsman is leading the charge, they’ll have to forgive me for doubting that this will turn out to be any good.

The Bureau For Paranormal Research and Defense will fight the creatures that go bump in the night once again in Neil Marshall‘s Hellboy reboot, now simply called Hellboy. Some new details have emerged about the comic book adaptation, including who’s a part of B.P.R.D. this time around. Abe Sapien is on the team, of course, but so is someone who can listen to the dead and a scarred military-type with a dark secret.
Below, get some new details on the Hellboy reboot characters.
Splash Report‘s sources tell them Abe Sapien, Alice Monaghan, and Major Ben Daimio are on Red’s side in the film, which will show them going up against the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich). Alice Monaghan is a surprising choice, as she’s not a massively well known character in Mike Mignola‘s Hellboy universe. In the comics, Hellboy rescued her as a child from fairies. She picked up a few of their traits while living with them. In Marshall’s film, it’s unconfirmed if this will be a part of her origin story, but she’ll be able to hear the dead. Major Ben Daimio is a serious, nonsense military-type who’s a major character in the B.P.R.D. comics. And also [Spoiler Alert] he’s the victim of a curse that transforms him into a bloodthirsty monster. [Spoiler Over] With principal photography beginning in a month, we’ll know who’s playing who soon.
Some other characters in the mix? King Arthur, Merlin, the witch Baba Yaga, and Gruagach, a fairy and adversary of Hellboy’s. Gruagach seeks revenge against Hellboy, who the fairy curses for his current predicament. In the comic, the fairy and former warrior is stuck in a Grom’s body, looking like a boar. Gruagach appeared in Mignola’s “Hellboy: The Corpse” and “Hellboy: Strange Place.” In “The Corpse,” set during the year 1959, Hellboy, Gruacgach, and Alice Monaghan’s stories are linked to one another.
Hellboy and the gang face a threat in the streets of London this time, where filming is mostly taking place. According to the report linked above, a creature will wrap its big tentacles around the London Bridge at one point.
We already know Marshall’s vision for the film, which co-stars Ian McShane as Professor Broom, is R-rated. The Splash Report writes that we’ll see a few heads get decapitated along the way in Hellboy’s bloody journey. All of these details point to a drastically different movie than Guillermo del Toro‘s delightful films. Another difference between del Toro’s interpretation and Marshall’s? Marshall’s will feature the B.P.R.D. headquarters located on a snowy mountainside (where it has been for much of the comic book run), not in a city. Expect to see plenty of artifacts and ancient weapons during the walk and talk scenes, presumably led by David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Hellboy.
Hellboy currently doesn’t have a release date.

If you’re going to hire a screenwriter to go big, Terry Russio is a fine pick for the job. The co-writer behind Gore Verbinski’s massive Pirates of the Caribbean movies is leading the charge for the writers room handling Godzilla vs. Kong.
Legendary Pictures has hired a group of writers to hash out the story for this famous monsters showdown, which is due out in 2020. Let’s take a look at the talent who will be in the room.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned Russio is acting as the head of the writers room. Their job, of course, is to try to crack the story and come up with the best characters, ideas, and scenes for that story. Once their work is done, a screenwriter will be selected to write the full Godzilla vs. Kong screenplay.
Here’s a rundown of who’s in the room with Russio:
Legendary is pulling a move similar to what Paramount is doing with their Transformers sequels and spin-offs. They hired Akiva Goldsman to be the head of a writers room stacked with talent to help secure the future of that franchise. It seems like more and more film franchises are being run like television shows these days, with large writing staffs collaborating.
With Kong: Skull Island hitting theaters this weekend, audiences will get some idea of what to expect for the future brawl between Godzilla and Kong (we recommend you stay through the end credits). According to THR, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts‘ big monster movie “was retrofitted to fold into an overall story” during development, but not in a way that came as a detriment to the film.
Godzilla vs. Kong opens in theaters May 29, 2020.

]]>Kong: Skull Island is opening in theaters today, but Legendary Entertainment is setting its sights on a bigger prize: the eventual clash of King Kong and Godzilla. To that end, the studio has announced the assemblage of a writers room that will author the story beats of Kong vs. Godzilla, under the direction of Pirates of the Caribbean screenwriter Terry Rossio. But this news isn’t really about one flashy mash-up.
Legendary intends to get into the “Cinematic Universe” game — like the Marvel films — with its collection of movie monsters. Gareth Edwards’ 2014 film Godzilla kicked off the series, and this weekend’s Kong: Skull Island builds upon it. The two will be followed by Godzilla: King of the Monsters, slated for release in 2019, with Godzilla vs. Kong coming a year later.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the writer’s room that will break the story of the inevitable monster fight will include Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne (Star Trek Beyond and Star Trek 4), Lindsey Beer (The Kingkiller Chronicles), Cat Vasko (Queen of the Air), T.S. Nowlin (Maze Runner film, Pacific Rim: Uprising), Jack Paglen (Transcendence, Alien: Covenant), and J. Michael Straczynski, (Babylon 5, World War Z, Sense8). The team won’t collectively write the screenplay. Rather, as THR describes, “once [Rossio] and his cohorts work out the best ideas and beats for the story, a writer will be chosen to write the script.”
The process is one that studios are increasingly turning to to help brainstorm their massive franchises. Lucasfilm famously uses its Star Wars Story Group to maintain continuity between its films, television series, and novels straight, while Paramount assembled a group in 2015 for its rejuvenated Transformers franchise. The process is similar to the method that television shows have used for decades: teams meet on a regular schedule to figure out the larger storyline before handing off the individual episodes to individual writers. As the line between TV and films blur — television becoming more cinematic with few episodes, film becoming more connected across bigger franchises — this sort of shift seems inevitable.
The technique allows for a variety of voices and ideas, while also accommodating for speed. One person imagining multiple detailed stories would take years, but as a team, the logic goes, it can be done in a fraction of the time.
It makes sense in this interconnected, everything-must-have-a-cinematic-universe attached-to-it world. With the successes of huge franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars, big production companies are looking to lock their audiences in for decades at a time by interconnecting not just individual series but entire ecosystems of content. Given the long-term nature of these franchises, planning out the larger story is a good idea. Hiring a team vs. a singular talent is the new normal in an industry that has traded singular movies for never-ending franchises.

Steven Spielberg has always done a fine job of rotating between this entertainments and his more serious pictures. After all, we’re talking about a filmmaker who somehow managed to release Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List in the same year. Note how he balanced The Adventures of Tintin with War Horse and Bridge of Spies with The BFG. It’s no coincidence that the upcoming Ready Player One will arrive shortly before The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara. Spielberg is a storyteller with many interests and we are better for it.
And on a day that confirmed he will soon get around to finally making Indiana Jones 5, it only makes sense that we would also learn that Spielberg is making a movie about the infamous “Pentagon papers,” with the thespian dream team of Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep set to star.
The film is called The Post and Deadline reports that Spielberg has just signed on, making him the third member of an unbeatable Hollywood triumvirate. The script is by Liz Hannah and it was bought last year by Amy Pascal’s Pascal Pictures. We can probably assume that it’s a pretty, pretty good script.
This will mark the fifth time Spielberg has directed Hanks, but only the second time he has directed Streep (she voiced the Blue Fairy in A.I.: Artificial Intelligence). However, this will be the first time Hanks and Streep have shared the screen together, despite having shared producer credits offscreen in the past. The chance to see these three, all legitimate masters of their craft, collaborate on a single movie is worthy of an admission cost.
Set in 1971, The Post follows The Washington Post‘s showdown with the United States government over the “Pentagon Papers,” a classified military document that was leaked to the press by military analyst Daniel Ellsberg. The report offered evidence that the Johnson administration had lied to the American people and Congress alike, secretly escalating the War in Vietnam. Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and publisher Kay Graham joined forces with the New York Times, fighting for the right to publish the papers. Hanks will play Bradlee while Streep will play Graham.
Although set 46 years ago, the story behind told in The Post is still relevant today. In an age where the President of the United States has declared war on journalists and longstanding news institutions, it’s all anyone can do to remind the American people of the importance of facts and the men and women who have dedicated their lives to collecting them and putting them on record. After all, the press is a vital force in any free society – when our leaders overstep, our newspeople are required to call them on it. That’s been a cornerstone of American ideals since the founding of the nation, it was a cornerstone during the days of Richard Nixon, and it’s more important than ever in 2017.
While this sounds like it could be the cinematic equivalent of eating your vegetables, Spielberg’s Lincoln is a case study in how to educate and enlighten while also making the most entertaining film imaginable. Spielberg wears his personal politics on his sleeve (right alongside his big ‘ol sentimental heart), but he has always been, first and foremost, our greatest entertainer. The Post could be rousing and “important,” but it’s almost surely going to be fun as well.
