  • Google software engineer Faraaz Sareshwala said his wife was assaulted on a Southwest flight to Phoenix.
  • In a thread of tweets, he called out Southwest Airlines for not reprimanding the man he said is responsible.

A California man is accusing a Southwest Airlines passenger of physically and verbally assaulting his wife on a Saturday morning flight from Orlando to Phoenix.

In a series of tweets, Google software engineer Faraaz Sareshwala detailed an encounter in which a man sitting in front of his wife, Saarah, allegedly "violently pushed his seat back" repeatedly in an attempt to physically harm her, while also making several "racial slurs (and) misogynistic comments." 

 

According to Sareshwala, Saarah was sleeping with her head on the tray area when she was awoken by the outburst, which was witnessed by her seatmates. Although she was initially unaware of what happened and got up to use the restroom, he wrote that the passengers next to her attempted to confront the man and informed Saarah of the incident upon her return. 

Sareshwala wrote that the man reportedly told the seatmates to "fuck off" and said "that bitch got what was coming for her." As drink services began in the cabin, Sareshwala said the man also made comments to a woman sitting next to him that he should resume hitting the seat in an effort to spill Saarah's drink. 

After struggling to get help from flight attendants, Saarah and her seatmates began passing notes back and forth to communicate about the issue, he said. Sareshwala shared a note from one particular witness, Gabi, who detailed her account of events.

In his Twitter thread, Sareshwala expressed frustration with Southwest, claiming that though one flight attendants offered to change his wife's seat, they never confronted the man, while another employee only offered to call the police after one of Saarah's seatmates spoke up. 

Sareshwala nor Southwest Airlines immediately responded to Insider's request for comment.

Everyone involved was questioned by the Phoenix Police Department, and the case was turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation because the incident occurred in the air, according to Sareshwala.

"We don't have an FBI case number but the Phoenix police said that if the FBI thinks there is enough evidence to press charges they will reach back out," Sareshwala said in a tweet.

He went on to highlight the roles race and gender may have played in the alleged incident. 

"We still don't know why he became so violent. However, I do know that my wife has never felt so violated, voiceless, and powerless," he wrote. "He used racial slurs and misogynistic comments so I guess it was that she was Indian and a woman (read: not white and not a man)."

The Federal Aviation Administration has a strict zero tolerance for unruly or dangerous behavior on flights. On Wednesday, a man was arrested and banned from American Airlines after being seen punching a flight attendant in the back of the head.

Daniel Enrique Fabian, from New Port Richy, Florida, was charged with “lewd and lascivious battery or sexual activity with a victim between the ages of 12 and 15” on Wednesday.

After the attorney Michael Avenatti said he was investigating a claim that the Fox News host Tucker Carlson “assaulted” a “gay Latino immigrant,” Carlson responded in a statement to Business Insider that he did not assault the man and that the individual called his 19-year-old daughter a “w—-.”

The incident in question occurred last month at a country club in Virginia. In a video Avenatti attached to his tweet announcing his investigation, Carlson appears to be telling another man to “get the f–k out of here” while others seem to be trying to get Carlson and others in the room to calm down.

A Baltimore jury found police officer Christopher Spivey not guilty of assaulting a suspect in an incident caught on police helicopter cameras.

Baltimore County officer Spivey was found not guilty of four counts of second degree assault on Thursday in a case built around infrared police helicopter footage.

The camera captured the stolen car chase and foot pursuit on January 25. After suspect Diamontae Tyquan Farrar, 20, had surrendered and was on the ground Spivey began kicking him. The officer was accused of excessive assault in the incident.

Video footage played in court on Tuesday shows Farrar running from the crashed car to a parking lot. Baltimore police had reportedly refused to release the helicopter footage before the trial.

The footage shows Farrar running in a carpark, where he stops and lies on the ground before the officers reach him. Spivey is seen running to Farrar and kicking him, even as other officers handcuff the suspect.

Spivey was also accused of spitting on Farrar.

The jury acquitted the officer within half an hour, and thanked the officer for his service after the trial, CBS Baltimore reports.  

Farrar, who is serving time for the theft, appeared in court and said he was kicked only twice and that the spit was accidental, and he wasn’t injured. The defense argued he hid his hands from police and resisted being handcuffed.

The Baltimore City Police helicopter captured the incident, and two officers, Edward Nero and John Bilheimer, testified that they were concerned by the video and decided to report it to their supervisors.

Nero was one of the six officers acquitted in the Freddie Gray case. Gray was arrested and fell into a coma in a police van. He died of spinal cord injuries after being shackled in the van without a seatbelt in 2015.

“Four not guilties in less than half an hour, 35 minutes, or whatever. I think it sends a powerful message as to the weight of this, or the merits of this case,” defense attorney Brian Thompson told media outside the court.

“We certainly hope that in the future they will investigate these matters more thoroughly before they charge a good cop like Chris Spivey,” he added.

“I take my responsibility to police the police very seriously,” Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger said after the trial. “I watched that video dozens of times before we made the decision to go forward. My decision will always be made based on the facts and the law.”

Spivey was suspended with pay during the trial.

An 81-year-old imam has been jailed for 13 years for sexually assaulting young girls during Koran lessons at a mosque in Wales.

Mohammed Haji Sadiqque was found guilty of six counts of indecent assault and eight counts of sexual assault on four girls aged between five and 11 years old.

The assaults took place between 1996 and 2006 at the Madina mosque in Cardiff where Sadiqque taught for more than 30 years.

An investigation was launched in 2006 when two girls came forward with complaints against the imam. He denied the allegations and the investigation was shelved until 2016 when it was restarted after two more victims came forward.

Mike Jenkin, a spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “These women have shown remarkable courage in coming forward to speak about the abuse they suffered at the hands of Mohammed Sadiqque when they were young girls.

“Sadiqque was a respected figure in the community with considerable influence and power, which makes the bravery of his victims all the more admirable.

“The evidence given by these women meant the prosecution was able to present a compelling case to the jury, resulting in the guilty verdicts.”

A jury found Sadiqque guilty in June and he was handed his sentence on Friday. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and claims he is the victim of a conspiracy by other members of the mosque.

Calling the abuse “a gross breach of trust,” Judge Stephen Hopkins QC ordered Sadiqque to register as a sex offender indefinitely, The Guardian reports.

“There is a darker, deviant side to you which this trial has exposed,” Judge Hopkins said. “This was a gross breach of trust – parents sending their young, female children to be taught the Koran by you.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott joked Friday about targeting eporters — one day after the GOP’s newest elected member of the House of Representatives allegedly assaulted a reporter.

Abbott, a Republican, was at a gun range with reporters to celebrate legislation that lowers the cost of obtaining handgun licenses in Texas when he reportedly held up his target sheet and joked, “I’m gonna carry this around in case I see any reporters.”

Patrick Svitek, a Texas Tribune reporter who was present at the gun range, confirmed in an email that Abbott was referring to the target sheet he’d just finished shooting at.

The joke was criticized by many for its apparent normalizing of violence against journalists.

A spokesperson for Abbott did not respond to a request for comment.

The joke comes during an increasingly hostile political environment for reporters. On Wednesday, Montana representative-elect Greg Gianforte allegedly slammed a Guardian reporter to the ground and repeatedly punched him in the face.

Gianforte, who has been charged with misdemeanor assault, first denied the claims through a spokesperson. After winning the election, GIanforte apologized to the reporter for the assault, saying he “made a mistake.”

Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski also infamously grabbed a reporter last year after the reporter tried to ask then-candidate Donald Trump a question. Trump’s presidential campaign was mired with other instances of enmity to reporters — including when Trump called the media “the enemy of the American People,” threatened to “open up” libel laws to make it easier to sue news outlets and blacklisted news outlets from attending campaign events in retaliation for negative coverage. Police even arrested a reporter for trying to attend a campaign event after being blacklisted. 

The hostility toward the press has not subsided since Trump’s election. 

Last month, Trump’s secretary of homeland security, Gen. John Kelly, was caught on a hot mic joking with President Donald Trump to use a saber on the press. 

A reporter from CQ Roll Call was manhandled by FCC security on May 18 for trying to ask a question. Police arrested a journalist on May 9 when the reporter tried to ask Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price a question. 

Trump also reportedly recommended to former FBI Director James Comeythat reporters who publish classified information be jailed.

Greg Gianforte, who was elected to serve Montana in the US House of Representatives, apologized for assaulting a news reporter in a victory speech he gave on Thursday night.

“When you make a mistake, you have to own up to it. That’s the Montana way,” Gianforte said. “Last night, I made a mistake, and I took an action that I can’t take back, and I’m not proud of what happened. I should not have responded in the way that I did, and for that I am sorry.”

“I should not have treated that reporter that way. And, for that, I’m sorry, Mr. Ben Jacobs,” Gianforte said, referring to The Guardian reporter who said Gianforte “body-slammed” him during a campaign event the day before.

The altercation happened at Gianforte’s campaign headquarters in Bozeman, Montana on Wednesday. Jacobs said he was asking Gianforte some questions at a campaign event before their encounter turned violent.

“Greg Gianforte just body slammed me and broke my glasses,” Jacobs tweeted Wednesday.

Local authorities said in a statement that after “multiple interviews and an investigation by the Gallatin County Sheriff’s office, it was determined there was probable cause to issue a citation to Greg Gianforte for misdemeanor assault.”

Gianforte is expected to appear at Gallatin County Justice Court “between now and June 7,” the police statement said.

The man, whose identity has not been released, is “charged with violating Penal Code Section 304, which deals with sexual acts with children under 16 years of age,” Terje Kaddeberg Skaar, head of the Agder police district’s prosecution unit, told Norwegian Faedrelandsvennen, which first reported on the scandal.

“Charges apply to sexual acts against more than ten children,” Skaar added. The Faedrelandsvennen investigation revealed that at least 15 children fell victim to the suspected predator. That number has also been confirmed by VG news.

The alarm about the possible sexual abuse of children was raised in mid-January by a school which one of the victims attended. Police started to investigate the case which led them to more potential victims, police attorney Ingrid Thorsen Agder told VG news.

“They [the abuses] are associated with refugee centers or homes affiliated to refugee services,” Thorsen said.

Police say it is too early in the investigation to reveal more details about the case. After the man was arrested in mid-February, a local court on February 18 ruled that he should be placed in pre-trial detention for five weeks. His hardware, including telephones and computers, have been confiscated by police for “technical” analysis.

Police and child care workers at the Kristiansand branch of Statens Barnehus are now questioning the victims and any possible witnesses, Thorsen explained, promising to provide updates on the case. The victims’ lawyer, Anne Rita Meberg, while refusing to comment on the “severity” of abuse told the VG “the children are now cared for in the best possible way.”

The alleged molester’s lawyer, Knut Henning Larsen, said his client does not admit guilt and did not understand the charges laid against him.

The latest scandal comes on the back of a report by Pro Sentret, an Oslo-based organization, which revealed among other things that unaccompanied underage asylum seekers engaged in paid sexual activity after arriving in Norway.

“Some of them (minors) continue to exchange sex to obtain benefits when they come to Norway. Some do it to send money to the family they left behind in their home countries, while others do it to get care and adult contact; many of them do not feel they get enough in the asylum system,” Bjorg Norli, the head of Pro Sentret told Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.

At the peak of the European refugee crisis in 2015, some 5,480 unaccompanied minors sought asylum in Norway, 20 percent of whom were children under the age of 15. Norwegian authorities went on to honor 98 percent of those asylum petitions, according to the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Family Affairs.

The charges were later changed to “voluntary violence,” sparking controversy.

The man alleges that the police officers used force during an ID check on Thursday, with one of them thrusting his baton into his anus. The alleged assault took place not in a vehicle or at the police station, but on the street, he said, as cited by AFP.

The man suffered severe wounds, underwent emergency surgery, and was advised by doctors to stay away from work for 60 days, sources close to investigation told French media.

The local public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the incident, to be carried out by the General Inspector of the National Police (IGPN).

The alleged assault took place in the commune of Aulnay-Sous-Bois and was captured on film by surveillance cameras belonging to local police, which shows a police officer delivering a horizontal blow with his baton to the buttocks of the young man after his pants “dropped by themselves,” AFP reported, citing a source close to the investigation. 

Parts of the video from a surveillance camera, showing a dark-skinned man subdued by police at a distance, have been released by Le Parisien TV. A witness in the video report shows blood at the alleged site of the man’s interaction with police. 

The young man was taken to the hospital. The doctor who examined him said he had suffered “a longitudinal wound in the anal canal” and “a section of the sphincter muscle.”

Arriving at the police station, the young man complained “of bleeding in the mouth and anus,” a source close to the investigation told Le Parisien.

The officers, who deny the charges, have seen their initial detention period extended by 24 hours.

Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux has highlighted the need to “shed light on the extremely serious charges against these officials,” Le Parisien reported.

On Sunday, the charges against the police officers were changed to “voluntary violence.” The mayor of the commune, where the incident happened, was quick to condemn the prosecutors’ decision on his Facebook page.

“Today, the prosecutor’s office announces requalification of the charges to “voluntary violence” with aggravating circumstances,” Bruno Beschizza wrote. “I do not understand this requalification. We, the Aulnaysians [those living in Aulnay-Sous-Bois], can not understand this requalification. It is perceived as a misrepresentation of the truth.”

The post has collected dozens of comments with many praising the mayor for his stance, while others urging to wait and see for the results of the investigation. Some have been doubting the mayors sincerity, accusing him of making the statement only for the sake of appeasing “the young people who would be ready for a new ‘uprising’ in the suburbs.”

There have already been reports of tensions in the commune with a population of 3,000 people, with a car being burnt and an attempt to set a bus on fire Saturday night, according to a police source cited by Le Figaro.
