  • Passengers helped crew to restrain a 33-year-old man on an American Airlines flight on Wednesday.

Passengers on an American Airlines plane helped cabin crew restrain a man after he allegedly punched a flight attendant in the back of the head on Wednesday, officials said.

A Department of Justice news release disclosed that passengers aboard the flight to Los Angeles airport helped to apprehend Alexander Tung Cuu Le after he was seen striking the flight attendant.

An FBI affidavit said Le was then moved to another row over safety concerns and had his hands and legs cuffed. Le continuously unbuckled his seatbelt, leading crew members to further restrain him with seatbelt extenders.

The 33-year-old from Westminster in Orange County, California was detained upon landing at LAX and taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigation because the incident occurred in the air.

Le was charged with one count of interference with flight crew members and attendants, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, the DOJ said.

He appeared in court in Los Angeles on Thursday, but the matter was adjourned until Monday morning for a detention hearing and he remained in custody. 

According to the DoJ release, Le reportedly began to act erratically shortly after departing Los Cabos in Mexico, loitering away from his seat and making gestures toward crew that were implied as threats of violence.

After assaulting the flight attendant, Le fled toward the back of the plane where he was apprehended by several passengers near an exit row, the DoJ stated.

The FBI affidavit stated that the flight attendant seen being struck by Le was left unable to carry out their normal duties and was taken to hospital after the flight landed.

"Additionally, the crew of AA 377 had to focus on restraining Le, which interfered with their duties and reduced their ability to provide service to over 100 passengers," it said.

Even after Le was restrained, the crew was still concerned about his behavior. One flight attendant was "shaking so much that she had difficulty performing her duties" and stated that the flight was "the longest hour and 58 minutes of my life," according to the affidavit.  

American Airlines has banned Le from its flights. 

"The individual involved in this incident will never be allowed to travel with us in the future, and we will work closely with law enforcement in their investigation," AA said in a statement Thursday.

American Airlines did not immediately respond to Insider's request for additional comment about the incident.

As for who are in the running to replace Caroline, there have been suggestions BBC Radio 1 DJ and MTV presenter Maya Jama could be heading to South Africa soon. 

Emily Atack, Maura Higgins and Laura Whitmore have also been speculated. 

It comes after police arrested Caroline in the early hours of Friday, with a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirming she had been arrested for assault by beating and would be appearing in court before Christmas.

“Caroline Flack, 40, of Islington was charged on Friday, 13 December with assault by beating. She will appear on bail at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 23 December,” the police spokesperson said.

“This follows an incident at approximately 05:25hrs on Thursday, 12 December after reports of a man being assaulted. He was not seriously injured,” they added.

Seth Meyers had no time for a “Closer Look” on Tuesday. Instead, the Late Night host tersely addressed the latest sexual assault allegations leveled against President Trump.

Meyers aimed his commentary directly at 45 in a segment called “Hey!” The desk piece was born from this week’s New York Magazine cover story, in which advice columnist E. Jean Carroll accuses Trump of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room 23 years ago. In the days since the interview was first published, Trump has vehemently denied the assault, telling The Hill that Carroll is “not my type” and “it never happened.”

“Hey, asshole, if someone asks you if you raped that woman, and you say, ‘No, she’s not my type,’ that’s not a defense. That’s a confession,” Meyers said. “It’s like if you asked Hannibal Lecter, ‘Did you eat that guy?’ and he said, ‘No, he looked a little bony.’”

“No one believes you when you deny this stuff, because you already admitted to it,” Meyers continued. “Remember, you were on a bus with Billy Bush, bragging about assaulting women like some sort of Port Authority pervert. Trump’s headshot shouldn’t be hanging at the White House; it should be hanging at every Greyhound bus station in the tri-state area.”

Later, Meyers pointed out that Carroll is at least the 22nd woman to come forward with allegations against POTUS. The sheer number, he said, makes it hard to believe that Carroll is being dishonest. “Who do you think is lying to us in this situation?” he asked. “All 22 women who have nothing to gain by lying, and are showing incredible courage in the face of these kinds of attacks, or the known liar who called climate change a Chinese hoax, said three million people voted illegally in the last election, and once told Eric Trump, ‘I enjoy spending time with you’?”

Just over a year after first cryptically alluding to “multiple physical assaults” on the NCIS set, Pauley Perrette has shed more light on her claims — and in doing do put series lead Mark Harmon in the crosshairs.

In a Friday tweet that didn’t appear to be in response to anything in particular, the NCIS alum said, “NO I AM NOT COMING BACK! EVER! (Please stop asking?) I am terrified of Harmon and him attacking me. I have nightmares about it.”

Two hours later, she followed that up with close-up photos of a crew member who, lore has it, was bitten by Harmon’s dog on-set in October 2016. (TMZ reported at the time that the crew member had been “roughhousing” with the then three-year-old pit bull mix, and required 16 stitches for his injury.)

“You think I didn’t expect blow back? You got me wrong,” Perrette’s second Friday tweet read. “THIS happened To my crew member and I fought like hell to keep it from happening again! To protect my crew! And then I was physically assaulted for saying NO!? and I lost my job.”

CBS did not immediately respond to TVLine’s request for comment on Perrette’s June 7 tweets.

Perrette last appeared in NCIS’ penultimate Season 15 episode (airing May 8, 2018), in which Abby committed herself to following in fallen colleague Clayton Reeves’ footsteps by shepherding a charity for homeless women. Abby shared heartfelt, in-person farewells with everyone on the team… except for Harmon’s Gibbs, with whom she instead exchanged a conspicuously edited ASL good-bye across his front lawn:

Days after said NCIS sendoff, Perrette alluded on Twitter to “multiple physical assaults” on the CBS drama’s set, but declined to go into any detail. “I refused to go low, that’s why I’ve never told publicly what happened,” she wrote then. “I’m trying to do the right thing, but maybe silence isn’t the right thing about crime.”

She also claimed that a “very rich, very powerful publicity ‘machine’” was “keeping [her] silent,” and yet she cryptically maintained: “He did it.”

CBS at the time responded with a statement saying, “Over a year ago, Pauley came to us with a workplace concern. We took the matter seriously and worked with her to find a resolution. We are committed to a safe work environment on all our shows.”

Perrette is set to return to CBS in 2020, starring alongside Jane the Virgin‘s Jaime Camil in the midseason comedy Broke.

Kevin Spacey is speaking out… as Frank Underwood. The actor posted a strange video to YouTube on Monday, in which he addresses viewers as his deceased House of Cards character, who was written out after sexual assault allegations against Spacey came to light. In the clip, titled “Let Me Be Frank,” Spacey alludes to Frank’s death in the sixth and final season of the Netflix drama, as well as the real-life allegations against him. In Oct. 2017, actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexually assaulting him at a party in New York when Rapp was 14.

“I know what you want. You want me back,” a Christmas apron-sporting Spacey says in the video. “Of course, some believed everything and have just been waiting with bated breath to hear me confess it all. They’re just dying to have me declare that everything said is true and that I got what I deserved. … But you wouldn’t believe the worst without evidence, would you? You wouldn’t rush to judgment without facts, would you?”

“All this presumption made for such an unsatisfying ending, and to think it could have been such a memorable sendoff,” Spacey continues, later adding, “I can promise you this: If I didn’t pay the price for the things we both know I did do, I’m certainly not going to pay the price for the things I didn’t do.”

Spacey goes on to say that “despite all the poppycock, the animosity, the headlines, the impeachment without a trial, despite everything, despite even my own death, I feel surprisingly good, and my confidence grows each day that soon enough you will know the full truth.”

He concludes his monologue by noting, “You never actually saw me die, did you?” He then puts on Frank’s ring. “Conclusions can be so deceiving. Miss me?” he finishes before walking away to the sound of a dramatic music cue.

The video comes on top of news that Spacey will be arraigned on a felony charge of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over at Nantucket District Court on Jan. 7, our sister site Variety reports. Spacey was accused by former Boston news anchor Heather Unruh of sexually assaulting her then-18-year-old son at a Nantucket, Mass., bar in July 2016. According to Unruh, the actor provided her son (who told Spacey he was 21) with drinks and then reached down his pants and grabbed the young man’s genitals.

South Korean short-track champion Shim Suk-hee has revealed that she was subjected to systematic physical abuse for more than 10 years in a court testimony given against her coach Cho Jae-beon.

The 21-year-old skater detailed horrific scenes from her training process, adding that the coach’s brutality resulted in numerous injuries, including broken bones and concussion.

“When I was in fourth grade, I suffered broken fingers after getting stuck by an ice hockey stick,” she said while attending an appeal trial at the Suwon District Court in South Korea.

Shim, who won three medals at the Sochi Olympics, said that her coach’s horrible attacks started when she was just eight, and lasted until the Pyeongchang Winter Games when the skater sustained a concussion after being hit in the head.

“Before the Pyeongchang Olympics, he kicked and punched me so hard that I thought I was going to die,” Shim said. “I had a concussion afterwards, and I fainted and fell down during the Olympics because of that,” she added.

Cho was sentenced to 10 months in prison in September for assaulting four short-track speed skaters, including Shim, but appealed the indictment denying all the allegations brought against him.

It was only a few years ago that he had reached the top of his profession, leading Canada's gymnastics team at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

This week, the decorated coach was in a Sarnia courtroom, facing two sexual assault charges levelled by a former student.

Brubaker's trial comes at a time when the sport of gymnastics is in a seismic flux. In the U.S., Larry Nassar, the former U.S. gymnastics national team doctor who was convicted of assaulting hundreds of young gymnasts under the guise of treatment, has brought the sport to its knees. Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 125 years in jail for his crimes. And just this week, U.S. Gymnastics declared bankruptcy as it desperately tries to make a fresh start.

Here in Canada, Brubaker is one of a number of high-profile coaches currently before the courts.

Brubaker has pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual exploitation The charges relate to alleged incidents between 2000 and 2007. The trial concluded Friday.

Justice Deborah Austin will determine whether or not Brubaker is guilty on Feb. 13. 

But this case offers another portrait of a sport we are assured has changed: scenarios that breed allegations like the kind seen in the Brubaker case are no longer tolerated.

But listening to the testimony in this case, you might wonder if that's possible. The world of elite gymnastics requires the perfect union of athletic prowess and rigid discipline. It often takes an intensive partnership with a coach that can become dependent. Former Canadian Olympic gymnast Kyle Shewfelt, who captured gold at the 2004 Athens Games, has watched this case closely. He currently runs his own gymnastics club in Calgary.

"These young women who are looking just to be validated, telling them, 'That was a good one' makes them stand up a little taller and makes their chest puff out a little bit more," Shewfelt says. "They feel like getting a compliment from the coach is like the best thing in the world. And I think that's a groomed behaviour and that's not right."

In the case involving Brubaker, the complainant told the court, from the time she was 12, he would commonly greet her with a kiss on the lips.

He doesn't deny this.

"I think it was just out of habit … that she started to kiss me," Brubaker said, insisting the kisses were innocent. "I don't come from a kissy family, so to me it's just part of the gymnast culture. It's not something I need as a man."

One wonders if that culture still exists.

Brubaker told the court the complainant initiated the kisses after a competition in Europe.

Brubaker's wife Liz, who worked alongside her husband, testified she found nothing odd about the kisses, but acknowledged her husband kissed other students only on the cheek.

The complainant also alleged that Brubaker touched her inappropriately while treating her for persistent pain and soreness.

Brubaker also vehemently denied this. But at the same time, an expert witness told the court that treatment, often in sensitive areas, is an integral and necessary part of maintaining the body of an elite gymnast.

"It's required," said sports physiologist Ronald Weese, who also worked extensively training elite coaches, including the Brubakers.

Weese told the court that maintaining the muscles required for nuanced splits and manoeuvres is extremely important.

Is this kind of treatment any less important today?

"You can't get [to an elite level] from here without an emphasis on the small, finer details." Weese told the court.

Complainant lived with Brubakers

During their lengthy time as coach and student, the complainant also lived with the Brubakers. The court heard that David Brubaker took special care of her, picking her up almost daily at school before driving her home and then to practice.

On a number of occasions, it's alleged, Brubaker invited the complainant into his bedroom to join him for a nap. She alleges Brubaker would "spoon" her and tickle her belly.

He denied this ever happened.

"She required a lot of attention," Brubaker told the court during his testimony. "I did everything I could to give her what she needed to achieve her goals."

Gymnastics officials on both sides of the border say steps have been taken to eliminate scenarios where potential allegations like these could arise from. There is a rule in place to ensure two adults are present when a child is alone. Organizations are working harder than ever to define and enforce boundaries coaches should never cross, like communicating with athletes on social media. Children are more empowered and there are more avenues to report wrongdoing, according to officials.

But we know that in sports like gymnastics, the road to the podium is achieved in solitude, often driven by a coach the athlete is willing to do anything for.

Shewfelt hopes this is all changing. He hopes the drive to be the best won't have to come with the pain we have seen recently played out in courtrooms.

"My hope is that the sport can evolve to a place where young women are given the ability to make decisions for themselves in the sport. And I think that there are a lot of clubs in this country that do provide that opportunity," Shewfelt says.

"And so I encourage parents to look for a place that allows their daughter to have a voice and allow others [to] allow their daughter to be the one driving the bus."
