Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno has terminated the credentials of his UK ambassador, who has been at the center of negotiating the fate of WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange, as concerns mount over the whistleblower’s safety. The decree, with which Moreno effectively sacked Ecuador’s London ambassador Abbad Ortiz, was published by WikiLeaks on Wednesday. The document does not offer any explanation as to why Ortiz, who had been his country’s ambassador to the UK since 2015, is now being permanently recalled. Nor does it name a successor for the outgoing diplomat. The decree is effective immediately. WikiLeaks tweeted that Abbad, appointed to the office under President Raffael Correa, was the last diplomat the long-term self-exiled editor knew in the embassy. “All diplomats known to Assange have now been transferred away from the embassy,” the whistleblowing site claimed. This new and sudden twist in the Assange saga has been met with concern by his supporters, with some suggesting that Moreno is doing Washington’s bidding by removing people who might have stood by Assange and opposed his potential handover to the British police – which is expected to bring about a swift extradition to the US. The dismissal has been called “a silent pro-US coup.” Meanwhile in #Ecuador@Lenin Moreno has replaced judges and election officials. Anyone still loyal to former President @MashiRafael Correa must be purged. This is a silent pro-US coup. — J. (@jaraparilla) November 22, 2018 One user argued that sending off diplomats Assange might have bonded with and surrounding him with complete strangers is a form of “psychological torture.” This is psychological torture!!! — Free Press! Free Julian Assange 🔊 (@FreeWikiPress) November 22, 2018 Carlos Abad and others replaced with puppets who will "follow orders" from the puppet regime of Lenin Moreno (receiving instructions from Uncle Sam) — Dr. Roy Schestowitz (罗伊) (@schestowitz) November 22, 2018 Assange’s prolonged stay in Ecuador’s London embassy, where he has enjoyed protection from possible arrest and persecution in the US since 2012, has been hanging in the balance since the election of Moreno in 2017. Moreno, a former ally of Correa, has distanced himself from the anti-American policy of his populist predecessor and sought to reboot relations with the US. Ecuador is looking for US support in getting $ 3.9bn in international loans, and there have been reports that Washington’s assistance would be conditional to Ecuador’s handling of the Assange case. Lenin was bought like Judas with 1.3 billion loan — Raking Citizen Halo 🇫🇮🐦⏳ (@haloefekti) November 22, 2018 There have also been reports of intense negotiations between senior UK and Ecuadorian officials over the prospects of Assange’s eviction. The Times reported in summer that the talks were held at Foreign Office level. While Moreno has described Assange as “more than a nuisance” and “an inherited problem,” he repeatedly stated that Ecuador would not withdraw its protection unless the whistleblower breaches a set of stringent rules, which restrict his freedom of expression and visitation rights. The rules, which Assange described as violating his fundamental rights and freedoms, were laid out in August, demanding he stays away from discussing politics and pays for his own medical and other expenses. Late October, an Ecuadorian court rejected Assange’s appeal to revise the “protocol” Think your friends would be interested? Share this story!

It was reported on Sunday that Ecuador moved to restore Assange’s access to the Internet, cell phone communications and permitted him to receive visitors other than his legal team.

WikiLeaks confirmed that Ecuador lifted the restrictions it had imposed on Assange in March. Back then, Ecuador cited a written agreement that allegedly prohibited Assange from sending messages that would interfere in the affairs of other countries. WikiLeaks denied such an agreement existed.
“It is positive that through UN intervention Ecuador has partly ended the isolation of Mr Assange although it is of grave concern that his freedom to express his opinions is still limited,” Kristinn Hrafnsson, WikiLeaks editor-in-chief said in a statement.
He added that Assange was made aware of the decision “hours after” UN high commissioner for refugees Filippo Grandi and UN special rapporteur for freedom of expression David Kaye met with Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno. During his visit to Ecuador, Kaye praised Moreno for promoting the freedom of speech and for his protection of whistleblowers. At the time, Assange was still gagged at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
The news of Assange’s communications being restored was first reported by the Press Association citing sources. The Ecuadorian government is yet to make an official comment.
Assange has been confined to the embassy since 2012 after being granted political asylum by then Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa. The whistleblower fears if he leaves the building he will be seized by the British authorities and handed over to the US for trial over leaking troves of secret CIA documents, which exposed its tools for hacking and surveillance, as well as other confidential papers.
Assange was granted Ecuadorian citizenship in 2017, meaning that he could not be handed over to the UK unless he is stripped of his citizenship. However, the fate of one of the world’s most famous fugitives has been balancing on the edge of a cliff since Moreno came to power in May last year. Moreno called Assange an “inherited problem” and “more than a nuisance.” It was reported in July that Ecuador was in talks with the UK to expel Assange from the embassy, and that his extradition was all but “imminent.”
Moreno later confirmed that Ecuador discussed the terms under which Assange could leave the embassy with the British government, but stressed that any such agreement must include a guarantee that London would not hand over the whistleblower to the US.
“If the British government guarantees us that he will not run the risk of being extradited to another country, we will ask Mr. Assange (to leave); we will talk first with his attorneys,” Moreno said in August.

RT is interviewing Jennifer Robinson, a human rights lawyer who has been advising WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange since 2010. Assange remains incommunicado in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.
Robinson speaks to RT from the capital of Catalonia, Barcelona, where she is taking part in the World Ethical Data Forum.

Donald Trump has not only continued his predecessor’s crackdown on whistleblowers, but ramped up the effort, John Kiriakou told RT. He said Julian Assange should sit tight unless he wants to end up in a US jail.
Hopes that WikiLeaks co-founder Assange will be able to walk free from the Ecuadorian embassy after five years of effective imprisonment have reemerged amid reports he has been granted an ID card, and potentially citizenship, by the Latin American country on Wednesday.
However, the UK Foreign Office rejected the request by the Ecuadorian government to grant the Australian diplomatic status, meaning he would not be immune from prosecution if he leaves the embassy, British media report, citing a Foreign Office spokesman.
Kiriakou, a former CIA analyst turned whistleblower, told RT the UK government has likely been under “great pressure” from Washington to make sure Assange is snatched the moment he steps outside the embassy and is eventually extradited to the US.
“It’s a worst kept secret in Washington that Julian is likely slated to begin working his way through the US judicial process if he ever leaves the embassy. And I think the Americans told the British under no terms should Julian leave the embassy on his own free will,” Kiriakou said.
Pointing out that the UK’s official reasoning for arresting Assange, namely for breaching his bail conditions by seeking asylum at the Ecuadorian embassy, is “very weak,” Kiriakou argued that “nobody in the British Foreign Office would care if his name was not Julian Assange.”
The refusal of the UK government to let Assange go after the initial sex assault investigation by Sweden was dropped indicates the UK has been doing the job for the US.
“The British are quietly and secretly working with the Americans to make sure Julian is arrested and send to the United States for trial which I think is a travesty,” Kiriakou said. Judging by Trump’s first year in office, he has been following into the footsteps of Barack Obama in his crusade against whistleblowers, he added.
NSA whistleblower Reality Leigh Winner, who was denied bail and has been held in jail in Georgia since June for leaking a classified report into alleged Russian meddling in the US elections, is just one example of the Trump administration tightening its grip over the issue, Kiriakou said.
“Even Barack Obama didn’t ask that any of us be held without bail, so I think that this is really a continuation of a very dangerous and a wrong-headed policy to target whistleblowers.”
“Julian is one of the biggest international whistleblowers and I think that they want his head on a platter,” he said.
Under the current US administration and UK authorities keen to do Washington’s bidding, there is little chance Assange can leave the embassy and be secure, Kiriakou argued.
“Julian has to try to be as patient as possible. The Ecuadorian government has to be even more patient than Julian and hope that there’s a change in government either in the UK or in the US that’ll allow him to just leave the embassy and go to the airport and fly to Ecuador.”

The Twitter account of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has re-appeared after mysteriously disappearing Monday morning. The whistleblowing site has also confirmed that Assange is safe and well, despite some Twitter “oddities.”
People trying to access Assange’s Twitter page Monday were directed to an ‘error message’ page. Tech site Gizmodo estimated the @JulianAssange account was deleted sometime “between midnight and 1am GMT.”

But the handle re-appeared later in the day, posting an old cartoon of Santa Claus making a list of who’s naughty and nice, accompanied by a screenshot of the US Navy’s official account with the unusual statement: “This morning, an inadvertent keystroke by an authorized user of the US Navy Office of Information’s Digitial Media Engagement Team caused the trending term ‘Julian Assange’ to be tweeted from the Navy’s official Twitter account.”
Assange followed up with a promotional tweet, and a cute corgi, linking it to WikiLeak’s donation page.
A statement from WikiLeaks pointed out some “oddities” from the social media platform and the US Navy, but noted that apart from increased surveillance at the Ecuadorian embassy, the 46-year-old Australian was fine. “Despite some oddities from the US Navy and Twitter today and increased physical surveillance @JulianAssange’s physical situation at the embassy remains unaltered–confined without charge in violation of two UN rulings requiring the UK to set him free,” the statement read.

WikiLeaks also posted a screenshot of the US Navy’s since-deleted tweet which read “Julian Assange” in quotation marks.
It’s still unclear what exactly happened to Assange’s Twitter account, and it’s absence prompted some to speculate that he was being silenced by the social media platform. Others viewed it as a promo stunt.
Another account purporting to be Assange’s alternate handle claimed his page was deleted by Twitter ahead of publishing a huge new story, but there was no evidence Assange authored that message himself and the account was subsequently deleted.
The WikiLeaks founder has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012, fighting sexual assault allegations in Sweden. He maintains the charges are politically motivated and a way to extradite him to the United States for his whistleblowing activity.

Late on Christmas Eve Julian Assange’s official Twitter account appears to have been deleted. It’s initially unclear if the disappearance was a ban or if Assange simply deleted his own account. But it does not appear to simply be a glitch. According to The Daily Beast, a second account popped up shortly after claiming to be a back up alternate to the official @JulianAssange. It accused Twitter of deleting Assange’s account to silence him ahead of a major story. But that account has also now been removed.
You can see a cached version of the original account here, but there are no obvious clues as to why the account went quiet.
We’ve reached out to both Wikileaks and Twitter for more information. We’ll update the story if and when we hear back.
Update: Assange’s account is back up, but there’s still no explanation from him, Wikileaks or Twitter.

Ecuador has decided to extend the political asylum granted to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange amid ongoing fears for his safety.
“Ecuador decided to provide political asylum to Assange because it thought that his life is in danger and Assange thought the same,” President Lenin Moreno said speaking to RT Español.
“There is no death penalty in Ecuador, so our country has the right to grant asylum to Assange. We will continue to give him patronage for as long as we assume that his life may be in danger.”

Assange has resided in the Ecuadorean embassy in London since 2012, after seeking refuge there to avoid extradition to Sweden over rape charges.
Swedish authorities withdrew the allegations earlier this year, however, UK police said Assange would still be arrested if he left the embassy because he had broken the conditions of his bail and failed to surrender to authorities.
Moreno noted that his government has urged Assange not to comment on Ecuadorian politics, which the Australian has ignored.
“He continued to express his opinion on this issue and we let him to do that in order to avoid restriction of freedom of speech, but we earnestly urge him to abstain from that,” Moreno said.
In May, Assange tweeted that WikiLeaks will publish evidence of corruption in Ecuador if it receives it.

In the interview, Moreno also discussed his country’s relationship with Russia saying Ecuador needs to “get a lot closer to countries like Russia.” He thanked the Russian government for allowing thousands of Ecuadorian students to study in Russia.

The documentary “shows persons who never agreed to be in the film,” Taylor said, adding that “it is not just the WikiLeaks staff, who are put at risk, it is also the sources and persons they worked with.”
She also said that Assange “did withdraw his consent [to being shown in the film] but so did the others: so did his mother, so did [a British journalist, legal researcher, and WikiLeaks section editor] Sarah Harrison, so did [independent American journalist and computer security researcher] Jacob Appelbaum.”
Taylor explained that all these people did so “because they were not given an effective opportunity to voice their concerns and in some cases to even see the film before it was shown.”
“They were participating in this documentary under the strict conditions that they will receive the protection, that they will have a right to give input and to withdraw as well as to voice their concerns – none of this was respected,” she said, adding that the documentary poses a risk “not just for Assange but for the WikiLeaks sources, the people, who put their lives and security on the line to do the work they do.”
Taylor then said that the “Risk” director, the American documentary maker Laura Poitras, director of Academy Award winning CitizenFour about US whistleblower Edward Snowden, violated her initial agreement with Assange.
The agreement, under which Poitras was given “privileged access to WikiLeaks and Mr. Assange,” particularly said that the footage “was never to be edited in the US,” Taylor explained, adding that “Poitras allegedly broke that condition and took the footage to a country where she knew it would be [overseen] by the US authorities, who are waging a war against WikiLeaks.”
The lawyer also criticized the film for not showing the real work that WikiLeaks does. “It does not portray the work of WikiLeaks, it does not show the contributions they’ve made. There is a lot of scope for showing what WikiLeaks does that is just not there. If you want to know about WikiLeaks, go to the WikiLeaks page or to Justice For Assange. This documentary just does not show it,” Taylor said.
She confirmed that Assange’s lawyer, who also represents some other people who appeared in the film, “sent ‘cease and desist’ letters to the distributors of the film due to the fact that the participants did not authorize the use of their images in the film.”
Earlier, the distributors of the documentary said that Assange contacted them and demanded that they “immediately cease the use and distribution of all images of the Named Participants” that appeared in the documentary and “desist from this or any other infringement of the rights” of these people.

Organizers of a ‘constructive disobedience’ talk, running parallel to the G20 Summit, say their event was “sabotaged” when the fire alarm at Hamburg’s Audimax auditorium sounded minutes before Julian Assange was due to speak.

The WikiLeaks editor had been due to discuss cyber war at the ‘anti-establishment’ conference Friday evening when attendees were suddenly forced to evacuate the venue.
According to the group that arranged the talk, DiEM25, the alarm was triggered “just as we announced Julian Assange was about to connect via video link.”
DiEM25, which aims to “democratize Europe” and end “Brussels bureaucracy,” believe the incident was an act of sabotage.
“Someone appears to have manipulated the fire alarm. Everyone had to evacuate,” a DiEM25 spokesperson told RT.com.

“The firefighters came, found nothing, but didn’t let us back in. We’re continuing outside. We hope to still have Julian Assange [speaking] later.”
A spokesperson for the Hamburg fire services stated that the incident had been recorded as a “false alarm” after an “automatic fire alarm” at the venue went off.
“There were technical problems with the automatic alarm. No sabotage,” the spokesperson said.
With leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel set for two days of round-table discussions, the alternative summit saw former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis speak before the alarm incident.
He described how “neo-liberalism took shape” at G20 meetings in the past.
“The Washington consensus was spread throughout the world. It was a time when the US, Japanese, British governments and the European Union were in unison about the need to push down wages, deny trade union rights, expand the reach of multinational corporations and create pure freedom for capital and commodities,” Varoufakis said.
He added that the 2008 global financial crisis had since created a new problem and described how world powers were now much more fragmented, giving rise to the “various cockroaches of xenophobic racism.”

As Julian Assange enjoys “victory and vindication” following the closure of the Swedish prosecutors’ investigation, both he and his supporters know the fight is far from over.
“I welcome the Swedish prosecutor’s decision to end its investigation of Julian Assange,” John Kiriakou, a former CIA Counterterrorism Officer and whistleblower told RT. “We should not celebrate yet, however.”
“The governments of the United Kingdom and the United States have plotted against Mr. Assange for the past seven years, trying to silence him for his exposure of their crimes.”
Kiriakou, who was the first to acknowledge the CIA’s use of torture, spoke up because he believed the use of torture was “immoral, unethical and illegal.” He served 30 months for violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act by confirming the name of an officer involved in the CIA’s secret rendition program, and was released in 2015.
“The Swedish government has taken itself out of the equation,” he continued. “But I believe that if Mr. Assange were to leave the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, he would still be arrested on trumped up national security charges and extradited to the United States, where he would find it utterly impossible to receive a fair hearing.”
The Courage Foundation, an international organization supporting whistleblowers and truth tellers, has turned its focus to WikiLeaks and its staff, following the release of whistleblower Chelsea Manning on Wednesday.
Manning provided WikiLeaks with some of its most explosive revelations, including the ‘Collateral Murder’ video, the War Logs, State Department emails and decades of US embassy cables.

“What Chelsea [Manning] endured awaits another Courage Foundation beneficiary, Julian Assange, should he step outside the Ecuadorean embassy in London,” investigative journalist John Pilger told RT earlier this week.
“Julian Assange and the WikiLeaks staff are in danger,” Pilger continued. “WikiLeaks has been so successful in informing people all over the world of the surveillance and war state constructed by rapacious power that it is now fulfills the role of free journalism that the corporate media falsely claims for itself.”

“The DOJ [Department of Justice] has been running an unprecedented and wide-ranging investigation into WikiLeaks for its publishing and sourcing work since 2010,” the Courage Foundation explained. “It has involved paid informers, illegal interrogations in Europe and secret search warrants. Recently CIA Director Mike Pompeo called WikiLeaks a ‘hostile intelligence service.’”
“Recent reports cite Cablegate, the Iraq and Afghan War Logs and Vault 7 publications as well as WikiLeaks’ work in getting NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden asylum, as key to the investigation,” the foundation added.
“Free journalism is, by definition, a threat to those forces that secretly order, control and blight people’s lives,” Pilger said. “If Julian Assange was the editor of the New York Times doing his job as the US Constitution says he can, he would not be living in two small rooms, denied sunlight.”
“The difference is that Assange and the WikiLeaks staff are doing what journalists no longer do; they are the agents of people not power. They deserve our support.”
