Those who had not previously suffered a stroke or heart attack and did not take aspirin were more likely to live longer. 

Experts said the findings showed many older people may be taking the medicine “unnecessarily” and that it is “really of very little benefit.” 

Doctors last night said the findings “emphatically” showed there was no reason to use aspirin to prevent disease in healthy people and warned it may harm. 

Aspirin has long been used as a preventative measure to help reduce the risk of blood clots in patients who have suffered a heart attack or stroke. 

Lead researcher Professor John McNeil, of Monash University, Australia, said the findings showed many older people may be taking the medicine “unnecessarily”. 

He warned that the results do not apply to people with existing conditions such as a previous heart attack, angina or stroke, where aspirin is recommended to prevent further illness. 

Experts last night urged people to take medical advice from their before deciding whether or not to use aspirin regularly. 

Peter Rothwell, professor of neurology at the Centre for the Prevention of Stroke and Dementia at the University of Oxford, said taking the tablets if healthy, over the age of 70 and have not had a previous heart attack or stroke, is “really of very little benefit”. 

He also advised against self-medicating in the absence of a “definite medical indication” and said those who have been taking it should not stop taking it “overnight”. 

The results of the Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly trial were published in three papers in the New England Journal of Medicine. 

Dr Richard Hodes, director of the National Institute on Ageing said: “Clinical guidelines note the benefits of aspirin for preventing heart attacks and strokes in persons with vascular conditions such as coronary artery disease. 

“The concern has been uncertainty about whether aspirin is beneficial for otherwise healthy older people. This study shows why it is so important to conduct this type of research, so that we can gain a fuller picture of aspirin’s benefits and risks among healthy older persons.” 

Consultant cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra said: “For the treatment of heart disease, or for those who have suffered heart attacks, aspirin has been a ‘wonder drug’. 

But for patients without these conditions, this interesting new research shows it is not necessarily beneficial and actually appears to cause more harm in terms of the risk of serious bleeding.”

Scientists said taking a low dose for at least six months can reduce the chances of being struck down by almost 50 per cent.

A study involving more than 600,000 people found the common over-the-counter drug was especially effective against types of the killer disease which start in the digestive system.

The risk of cancers affecting the liver and oesophagus were cut by 47 per cent and those beginning in the stomach, pancreas and bowel fell by 38, 34 and 24 per cent respectively.

Aspirin was also found to dramatically reduce cancers of the lung, blood and prostate gland by as much as a third.

Professor Kelvin Tsoi, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where the landmark study took place, said: “Long-term use of aspirin – 80mg daily – can significantly reduce digestive cancer incidence. Similar benefits were observed in some other nondigestive cancers such as leukaemia, lung and prostate cancer.

“Long-term use showed 24 to 47 per cent significant reduction on major cancers in the gastro-intestinal [GI] tract, including colorectal, liver, oesophagus, pancreas and stomach.”

Long-term aspirin use cut the risk of prostate cancer by 14 per cent, leukaemia by 24 per cent and lung cancer by 35 per cent.

There was no significant protection against breast, bladder, kidney and multiple myeloma cancers.

Millions of Britons take a daily aspirin which can stave off heart attacks and strokes by preventing blood clots.

Costing as little as 2p per dose, the drug works as a painkiller by blocking inflammation in the body. Researchers analysed the records of 618,884 patients, 206,295 of whom took aspirin and 412,589 who did not.

The participants, whose average age was 67, were followed for up to 14 years. Those who had taken aspirin had done so for at least six months with the average duration and daily dose 7.7 years and 80mg.

Cancer was diagnosed in 98,533 people over the study period. Professor Tsoi said: “Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory but this was an observational study. We can’t say why it seems to help prevent gastro-intestinal cancers in particular.”

The findings, to be presented at the United European Gastroenterology Week conference in Barcelona, come as tests take place on 11,000 Britons who have recently had, or are having, treatment for bowel, breast, oesophageal, prostate or stomach cancer.

Scientists think that, when taken alongside new immunotherapy drugs, aspirin stops cancer cells “hiding”, allowing the immune system to find and destroy tumours. They believe the 10-year Add-Aspirin study taking place at 100 UK hospitals could yield “game-changing” treatments for the killer disease.

The race for a cure for one of the world’s most feared diseases comes as forecasts show half of people born in the early 1960s and beyond will develop cancer at some point in their lives.

Dr Jasmine Just, of Cancer Research UK which is funding the study with the National Institute for Health Research, said: “While there’s good evidence aspirin can reduce the risk of bowel cancer in some people, even with these results it’s not yet entirely clear if aspirin can do the same for other cancers.”

Scientists found the body can suffer a “rebound effect” following a sudden withdrawal – causing clots in vessels that supply the heart or brain.

The study shows how suddenly stopping the blood-thinning medication raises the risk of patients suffering a heart attack or stroke by 37 per cent.

Up to half of those prescribed aspirin take it upon themselves to suddenly stop, medics discovered. Patients are warned they should never quit unless specifically advised. In the UK, around 40 per cent of pensioners are prescribed daily aspirin.

Professor Johan Sundstrom, who led the study, warned the research suggested patients experience a “rebound effect” after stopping the aspirin treatment. He said because of the large number of patients on aspirin, and the high number who stop treatment, the importance of the rebound effect was significant.

In the UK, heart disease remains the biggest killer, claiming around 160,000 lives a year. Millions of pensioners – six in 10 among those over the age of 75 – are prescribed aspirin.

About half of these are patients who have already had a heart attack or stroke, while the others use it as a precaution. The pill is prescribed to help reduce the risk of such “cardiovascular events” by preventing clots forming in the blood vessels or arteries.

But the study, published in the journal Circulation, found that many stopped taking them. Ending a long-term, lowdose aspirin intake was found to radically increase the risk of a stroke or heart attack.

But it is estimated that almost a fifth of survivors stop daily aspirin use within the first three years following their heart attack.

And such poor compliance to prescribed aspirin therapy rose to 50 per cent in patients over the longer term, said Prof Sundstrom, from Uppsala University in Sweden.

To study the health effects of stopping aspirin, the researchers examined the records of 601,527 Swedish people who took low doses for heart attack and stroke prevention between 2005 and 2009.

The participants were older than 40 with an even split among the sexes. Their average age was 73 and each took around half a tablet daily with an adherence rate of 80 per cent.

In three years of follow-up there were 62,690 cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes. The researchers found one out of every 74 patients who stopped taking aspirin had one such additional event each year.

This rate was 37 per cent higher among those who stopped taking aspirin compared to those who continued. Prof Sundstrom said: “Low-dose aspirin therapy is a simple and inexpensive treatment [to avoid blood clots]. Our research shows the significant public health benefits that can be gained when patients stay on aspirin therapy.”

Last night, Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, welcomed the research.

He said: “This study clearly demonstrates the importance of taking your medications regularly.

“Discontinuing aspirin, despite medical advice, can increase your risk of cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke, by a shocking 30 per cent [plus].”

The study, part-funded by Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, follows previous research that has hailed the protective benefits of aspirin. However, the taking of aspirin remains contentious in the medical community.

And earlier this year a separate study suggested taking a daily aspirin was far more dangerous than previously thought – causing more than 3,000 deaths a year from fatal bleeds. Experts say individual patients should discuss the risks with their GP.
