Javicia Leslie is ready to suit up and take on Gotham’s worst. The God Friended Me alum will soon don the leather cowl when Season 2 of Batwoman premieres this Sunday (The CW, 8/7c). Leslie’s Ryan Wilder takes over for Kate Kane, who will be missing in action following Ruby Rose’s departure from the series in May.

With Leslie set to join the Arrowverse, the actress says she’s open to mixing it up with her CW cohorts, like the cast of Black Lightning. However, all crossover plans will have to wait until next year due to the COVID outbreak.

“I’m so heartbroken about the COVID situation because I know that it’s Black Lightning‘s last season, and I would have loved to do a crossover with them. Nafessa [Williams] and Jordan [Calloway] are really good friends of mine, and it would have been great to play with them and be superheroes all on the same show. That would have been epic,” Leslie tells TVLine, noting that she’d still like to stage a crossover when it’s safe to do so.

“Whatever show that has Black people on it, I’m going to do these crossovers with because I just want it to be a super Black crossover,” she adds.

TVLine has confirmed that the previously announced Arrowverse crossover between Batwoman and Superman & Lois has been cancelled as a result. According to Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries, that also means Kara Danvers likely won’t be dropping by Gotham before Supergirl wraps this season.

“We’re not really able to cross over because physically, we can’t cross crews due to the fear of exposure to COVID,” Dries explains. “So if Supergirl weren’t ending this year, I would say there would be more of a possibility. But I’m afraid that at least this year, we’re not going to be able to tap into that dynamic.”

Batwoman‘s second season will focus on Wilder’s journey as Gotham’s newest caped crusader. She’s Black, lesbian and has a criminal record. Dries describes her as a messy, slightly goofy and untamed woman whose life has been scarred by racial injustice and a troubled childhood. Wilder will use the batsuit as a way to escape those unhealed wounds and become powerful in a way that she can’t outside of the suit.

Wilder won’t just be inheriting those cool Batwoman gadgets, though; she’ll also add her unique touches. Leslie reveals that Wilder will be making changes to the batsuit — among other things. “She wants to figure out a way to make this Batwoman comfortable for her, making Batwoman something that she feels represents her life, her path, the people that she represents.”

Arrow Vet David Ramsey Set to Return to Arrowverse — Including With a Mystery Role on Legends of Tomorrow https://briefnews.eu/arrow-vet-david-ramsey-set-to-return-to-arrowverse-including-with-a-mystery-role-on-legends-of-tomorrow/ https://briefnews.eu/arrow-vet-david-ramsey-set-to-return-to-arrowverse-including-with-a-mystery-role-on-legends-of-tomorrow/#respond Tue, 01 Dec 2020 18:43:24 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/arrow-vet-david-ramsey-set-to-return-to-arrowverse-including-with-a-mystery-role-on-legends-of-tomorrow/

Arrow alum David Ramsey is returning to the Arrowverse, in multiple (and occasionally mysterious!) ways.

Some 10 months after Arrow signed off, Ramsey is set to direct a total of five episodes of upcoming Arrowverse seasons — including at Supergirl and freshman spinoff Superman & Lois (which bows Feb. 23, 2021), our sister site Deadline reports.

Ramsey previously directed two episodes of Arrow, where he was an OG cast member: Season 7’s “Past Sins” and the final season’s time-loopy “Reset.”

On camera, Ramsey will guest-star as Arrow‘s John Diggle in a total of five episodes across The Flash (which opens Season 7 on Feb. 23), Supergirl, Batwoman (Season 2 premieres Jan. 17) and Superman & Lois.

But most curiously, he will play “a mystery role” during Legends of Tomorrow‘s fifth season.

As Arrow‘s series finale drew to a close, Diggle was packing up to move with his family to Metropolis when a meteor crashed nearby, slamming him against a moving van. After shaking off the blow, Dig combed through the debris to discover a mysterious box, which, upon being opened, emitted a bright green light — seemingly nodding at the character’s long-speculated Green Lantern destiny.

“I don’t know what that means,” Ramsey said at a press screening. “But he does go to Metropolis, and he got a green box. We’ll still see, believe it or not. We’ll find out.”

Arrowverse EP Marc Guggenheim in turn told TVLine, “Greg [Berlanti], David and I have had a lot of conversations about David’s future in the Arrowverse going forward, both in front [of] and behind the camera, and there are a lot of ideas that we’re banding about that are very exciting to us… He’s on The Flash [in a February 2020 appearance], and we’ve just got some cool notions for next season.”

RELATED STORIES

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Monday’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” Proceed at your own risk!

“Crisis on Infinite Earths” traveled to Smallville during Part 2 of the Arrowverse crossover, revealing an unexpected turn of events for Tom Welling’s Clark Kent and Erica Durance’s Lois Lane.

Tasked by The Monitor with locating the Paragon of Truth, aka a Kryptonian who has suffered a great loss, Iris and Earth-38’s Clark and Lois traveled the multiverse in search of their Superman. They arrived at the Kent farm on Earth-167 to find Welling’s Clark chopping wood. But before the trio could fully explain what was going on, they were banished by Earth-38’s Lex Luthor, who was out to kill all the Supermen in the multiverse. However, his plan was thwarted when his kryptonite did nothing to harm Clark… because Clark gave up his powers for his family! Happily married to Lois with young daughters, he remarked, “That’s worth more than any superpowers.” With this Clark no longer a threat, Lex retreated — after getting punched by the powerless superhero, who remarked, “Still stronger.”

So how did Welling feel about the surprising fate of his character? “Honestly, he was terrific,” crossover showrunner Marc Guggenheim said at a recent press screening. After reading the script, Welling responded, “‘I love this.’ He basically said to me, ‘You guys have basically written the one scene that I can’t say no to,’ which was really, really nice… I feel like every note, even Tom’s little facial expression when he says, ‘Oh, still stronger,’ is great.”

And checking in with Clark on the Kent farm versus another location just felt organic for the fella dubbed “Smallville” by his wife. “We knew that we really wanted Brandon Routh to be Clark Kent in The Daily Planet,” Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries shared. “I think the Tom Welling Clark Kent that we all picture when we think of him is Clark on the farm. So it made sense that the farm is still there, and Tom was joking when he was there, ‘Oh, that cow recognized me.’ It all felt very 10 years ago in a great way.”

Elsewhere in Part 2 of the crossover, the superheroes were grappling with Oliver’s death, with Mia and Barry intent on resurrecting the archer via a Lazarus pit, despite Sara’s warnings about its aftereffects. With Constantine’s help, they located an Earth on which the Lazarus pits still exist and submerged their friend.

Deciding to use the pits to bring back Oliver made sense, because even though they’ve been destroyed on Earth-1, “we have been bringing [them] back a little bit this season” with Roy’s arc, Arrow showrunner Beth Schwartz explained. Plus, “it’s not just an easy transformation that you go in the pit and then you’re back. We all know what happens to people when they go in.”

Speaking of the consequences, Sara, who has firsthand experience with the pits, was right to be concerned about Mia and Barry’s plan. After a wild Oliver emerged from the pit, Constantine was unable to bring back his soul, having lost his magical mojo due to the spreading antimatter.

“The thing that, certainly, Sara’s wrestling with the most is she went into this whole Lazarus pit idea with Mia and Barry with a lot of reservations, and they’re reservations…that are very, very well-earned,” Guggenheim noted. “The complication that you saw at the end of Hour 2 is just another confirmation that she should have maybe trusted her original instincts that things are not working out quite the way Barry and Mia had hoped.”

Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 2 RecapMeanwhile, Kate and Kara went to Gotham City on Earth-99 to find the Paragon of Courage, aka the Bat of the Future. They believed him to be Bruce Wayne, but that world’s Batman (played by Kevin Conroy) turned out to be an old man warped by all the lives he had taken (including Superman’s!). When he attacked Kara, Kate sent Bruce flying, inadvertently electrocuting the metal suit holding together his weathered and battered body.

“He was being vicious, and she was being defensive of Kara to protect Kara,” Dries said of Kate’s actions. “I don’t think of [killing him] as an active goal of hers, so she’s not going to have the weight of that on her shoulders. It’s more so she just looked at her future in the mirror and is like, ‘Is this who I’m going to become?’ That’s why it’s so important that she’s establishing this relationship with Kara, who can talk her off the ledge and say, ‘No, that’s not who you are.’” As for that kryptonite Kate took back to Earth-1, it leads to an “internal conflict” for Batwoman in Part 3 (airing Tuesday), Dries teased.

TVLine readers, we may have told you a bit of a white lie.

Though we fully intended for last Sunday’s Quotes of the Week roundup to be our last one of the year, the past seven days of television simply delivered too many quality sound bites to pass up.

Without further ado, we present the real final photo gallery (seriously, we mean it this time), before our Quotes of the Year compilation makes its debut next week.

This time around, we’ve got a disappointing Christmas gift for one of the Clearys on The Kids Are Alright, some intentional political correctness on Superstore, a moment of bonding for Supernatural‘s Castiel and Jack and a major misunderstanding on Riverdale.

Also featured in this week’s roundup: double doses of The Conners, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and the Arrowverse “Elseworlds” crossover.

Arrowverse Crossover Finale Recap — Plus, Superman Drops Some Big News https://briefnews.eu/arrowverse-crossover-finale-recap-plus-superman-drops-some-big-news/ https://briefnews.eu/arrowverse-crossover-finale-recap-plus-superman-drops-some-big-news/#respond Wed, 12 Dec 2018 04:19:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arrowverse-crossover-finale-recap-plus-superman-drops-some-big-news/

The Arrowverse’s “Elseworlds” crossover event came to a close on Tuesday night, with what was admittedly the most by-the-numbers installment of the Flash/Arrow/Supergirl three-parter.

The black-suited Superman who confronted Barry and Oliver (aka the criminal “Trigger Twins”) at the end of Part 2 was in fact Dr. John Deegan, having chosen this new form to serve his book-toting god complex. After Barry and Oliver escape SuperDeegan by giving him rugrats to rescue, they seek out Cisco, whom they hope can get them to the true Man of Steel on Earth-38.  In the new reality, “Mr. Ramon” is a crime boss who only stops his muscle, Jimmy (Olsen), from roughing up the Twins because Barry utters the name of Cisco’s brother Dante. Gaining his attention, Barry and Oliver further tantalize him with the idea of getting rid of “Superman” as well as having a whole new Earth to burgle. After 17 apparent tries, alt-Cisco breaches himself and the fellas to Earth-38’s Fortress of Solitude, and promptly explain the SuperDeegan situation. They deduce the doc must have the book stowed somewhere inside his HQ, Earth-One’s STAR Labs.

Meanwhile, Kara is being kept captive in the pipeline at STAR Labs, where Diggle, Caitlin and a saaaad Alex serve at the pleasure of their Superman. Kara is eventually able to appeal to alt-Alex with anecdotes about their childhood as sisters — and her knowledge of what any Alex Danvers truly wants, including a wife and family. Alex springs Kara, but they are quickly cornered by SuperDeegan & Co. Just then, Superman, Barry, Oliver et al breach over, and the Supermen get to slugging it out in the sky. Kara finds the book in the time vault (why the weird, pointless line about heading to the Fortress of Solitude?), then brings it to her cousin outside. Clark opens it and fixes everything, until SuperDeegan shows up and threatens to snap Barry’s neck. Oliver is ready to take out Deegan with a kryptonite arrow, but Barry urges him not to cave into darkness (and save the day). As such, SuperDeegan snatches back the book and flies off, to re-re-rewrite things again!

Barry suggests that to get back the book, he and Kara will zip ’round and ’round the Earth, against its rotation, to slow it (Superman-style) and thus stop time. Clark warns that while he held the book he saw Barry and Kara die attempting this  but the two decide to give it a go regardless. Oliver meanwhile demands a meeting with the Monitor, saying that while he may have #darkness, Barry and Kara are the sort of good, hope-inspiring people the Monitor should want around to stop any… crisis. Meanwhile outside, Lois arrives on the scene with Brainiac and J’onn in tow. As the latter two respectively take on AMAZO and handle crowd control, Lois slams down the mighty hammer spied earlier in the FoS, disrupting Deegan with its shock waves. Oliver in turn fires an explosive arrow into the book, undoing Deegan’s handiwork while turning the doc’s face into… well, I’m not sure what. Oh, and Barry and Kara wind up (barely) surviving their supersonic globe trot.

In the first epilogue for what Kara notes is becoming “an annual thing,” Cisco breaches Kara & Co. back to Earth-38, where Clark confides in his cousin that she is stronger than him — and that’s why what he is about to do is OK. Lois is pregnant, the iconic couple reveal, and as such Supes will hang up his cape for a stretch, while he and his love go live on Argo. (Later in the FoS, Clark crushes a lump of coal into a diamond, Superman III-style, and properly proposes to his baby mama.)

Back on our Earth, over beers, Oliver admits to Barry that he will miss the stillness and clarity that Flashtime provides, after which Barry thanks Oliver for (presumably) talking the Monitor into changing his and Kara’s destinies. Oliver says, “I’m not as good as you think I am — but because of you I might get there someday.” Oliver balks at sealing the sappy sentiment with a hug, at which point Batwoman interrupts with a phone call, leading to this Fall 2019 crossover tease.

How the Arrowverse Finally Got to Use Gotham (But Never Show Batman) https://briefnews.eu/how-the-arrowverse-finally-got-to-use-gotham-but-never-show-batman/ https://briefnews.eu/how-the-arrowverse-finally-got-to-use-gotham-but-never-show-batman/#respond Mon, 10 Dec 2018 18:22:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-the-arrowverse-finally-got-to-use-gotham-but-never-show-batman/

Tonight on Arrow (The CW, 8/7c), the Arrowverse finally sets foot in the infamous Gotham, after so many years of merely alluding to the gritty metropolis and its resident caped crusader. In fact, there was a time when you couldn’t even speak of Gotham if you were a superhero series.

Caroline Dries, who wrote Part 2 of the “Elseworlds” crossover event with Arrow EP Marc Guggenheim, years ago worked on Smallville — as did Flash showrunner Todd Helbing. And back then, she shared at a recent press event, “DC doesn’t let you say Batman or have anything about Gotham — like it’s just off-limits.”

Nowadays, though, especially ever since Gotham became its own TV series (over on Fox), “all of a sudden, we can do stuff,” Dries noted. “And for a bunch of geeks like us, you’re in Heaven. It’s [then just a matter of] trying to figure out what you want to use.”

Perhaps most memorably, Arrow‘s Oliver jokingly named Bruce Wayne as the Green Arrow’s possible true identity, but there have been multiple other nods. Said Helbing, “It reminds me of… this SNL skit where for the first time they could say a word and they did one skit where they said that word the whole skit.”

Compared to the worlds that Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl live in, the Gotham we see on Monday night has “a darker vibe,” Dries said. “We were trying to create, with music and the exteriors and the alleys and the grime, a sort of uncomfortable city.”

There was also a point made to give the Arrowverse’s Gotham a look that is distinct from the one on the Fox series. Shooting exteriors on location in the Windy City (versus good ol’ Vancouver), “We loved the idea of Chicago, because it feels like that’s the cityscape we’re looking for,” Dries explained. “It’s hard to do a new version pf Gotham, but we knew the Vancouver skyline wasn’t quite right. It was a little too modern.”

Whilst in Gotham, Oliver & Co. will encounter Kate Kane aka Batwoman, played by Orange Is the New Black‘s Ruby Rose (who in success may headline her own CW series about the LGBT vigilante). “Ruby has a really strong, silent presence — her look is so powerful that you don’t want to take her eyes off of her,” Dries said. “She brings so much to the plate, we realized, just standing there and absorbing what the other guys are talking about. One of my favorite moments was when they show up at Wayne Enterprises and they’re all kind of bickering about Batman and she’s just standing there waiting for them to figure out this stuff. I didn’t know how working with her would be on the day, but that was a fun surprise.”

Alas, while Gotham is no longer a six-letter four-letter word for the Arrowverse, and Batwoman is fair game, Arrowverse viewers might not ever lay eyes on you-know-who. Batman.

“That’s the one where they cut you off!” Dries reported with a laugh. “Slowly but surely, we’ll just keep kicking away at it.”

That said, Batman is mentioned in Part 2, to some comedic effect.

Citing one of her favorite scenes — in which Oliver scoffs at the Dark Knight’s existence — Arrow showrunner Beth Schwartz said, “We introduce him as being the first vigilante, so it was kind of like poking fun at that a little bit and [Oliver] being defensive. He was the first Batman in his eyes, and so that was really fun, especially [Stephen] playing off of Grant [Gustin]… the two of them were so fun in this. I remember watching the cut and I was just cracking up.”

Left is right and up is down in the first batch of official photos from The CW’s upcoming Arrowverse crossover event, subtitled “Elseworlds.”

In this year’s three-night, Legends-less crossover — airing Sunday, Dec. 9 through Tuesday, Dec. 11, comprised of the ninth episodes of The Flash (airing on a special night), Arrow and Supergirl (airing on a special night) — Arkham Asylum doc John Deegan (played by Lost‘s Jeremy Davies) has rewritten reality, resulting in, among other things, Oliver Queen and Barry Allen involuntarily trading places.

But as seen in the new photos, other tweaks to the Arrowverse we know have taken hold, including The Flash‘s Cisco reconnected as a mobster, while Supergirl‘s nice guy James Olsen as some sort of street tough.

In addition to Davies and, of course Ruby Rose (Orange Is the New Black) as Batwoman/Kate Kane, other crossover guest stars include Tyler Hoechlin (reprising his role as Supergirl‘s Superman/Clark Kent), Elizabeth Tulloch (Grimm) as Lois Lane, LaMonica Garrett (Designated Survivor) as Mar Novu aka The Monitor, John Wesley Shipp as his classic Flash character and Cassandra Jean Amell as Mr. Freeze’s wife, Nora.

Hollywood Idol Rock Hudson Getting a Biopic from ‘Arrowverse’ Executive Producer Greg Berlanti https://briefnews.eu/hollywood-idol-rock-hudson-getting-a-biopic-from-arrowverse-executive-producer-greg-berlanti/ https://briefnews.eu/hollywood-idol-rock-hudson-getting-a-biopic-from-arrowverse-executive-producer-greg-berlanti/#respond Mon, 12 Nov 2018 11:45:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hollywood-idol-rock-hudson-getting-a-biopic-from-arrowverse-executive-producer-greg-berlanti/ Rock Hudson Biopic

Right now, rock legend Freddie Mercury is making waves at the box office in the form of the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, telling the story about how his band Queen rose to fame and would make an impact on music for generations. More importantly, the film shines a light on Freddie Mercury’s sexuality, though the frontman never addressed it out in the open. Now, Universal Pictures is looking to the history of the silver screen for a new biopic that will focus on a Hollywood icon forced to hide his own sexuality until he was close to his death bed.

Rock Hudson was a huge Hollywood star with one of those classic long-term studio deals intended to make him a star at Universal. Hudson was given plenty of publicity honors by various entertainment magazines like Star of the Year and Favorite Leading Man, but he was never able to show the viewing public who he really was, always hiding the fact that he was gay despite endless questions about such matters in his private life.

Deadline has word on the Rock Hudson biopic, which will be directed by Greg Berlanti, the executive producer who has made a name for himself working on the interconnected DC Comics television shows Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl. He recently set a new record for being a producer with 15 live-action scripted series on the air, the most of any TV producer at one time. But he also directed the romantic comedy Love, Simon.

The Rock Hudson biopic will give Universal an opportunity to focus on the struggle gay men had in the old days Hollywood, often forced to live double lives by being straight in the spotlight and gay in private. Hudson became an important figure in the 1980s after being diagnosed with HIV in 1984 and succumbing to complications from AIDS in 1985. He was one of the first mainstream celebrities to be diagnosed with the disease.

At the time, many people credited Rock Hudson with bringing much needed attention to AIDS and inspiring many to support the cause to cure the disease. Joan Rivers even said (via Wikipedia), “Two years ago, when I hosted a benefit for AIDS, I couldn’t get one major star to turn out. … Rock’s admission is a horrendous way to bring AIDS to the attention of the American public, but by doing so, Rock, in his life, has helped millions in the process. What Rock has done takes true courage.”

But before helping the gay community and the population at large battle HIV and AIDS, Hudson was one of the biggest stars on the big screen. He was a leading man in films such as Has Anybody Seen My Gal? with Piper Laurie, the westerns The Lawless Breed and Gun Fury, but he didn’t find stardom until leading Magnificent Obsession in 1984 and would go on to star in Captain Lightfoot and All that Heaven Allows, which is part of the Criterion Collection. However, Hudson might best be known for starring in Giant, one of only three films to star James Dean, and the only one for which Hudson earned an Oscar nomination.

After Giant, Hudson was offered all sorts of big roles, including Sayonara (which ended up starring Marlon Brando), The Bridge on the River Kwai (handed to William Holden) and Ben-Hur (which famously went to Charlton Heston). Instead, he opted to star in a remake of A Farewell to Arms, which went on to fail at the box office and received negative reviews.

It’ll be interesting to see how much of Hudson’s career is recreated for this biopic, especially when it comes to him working with the other greats of Hollywood’s golden years. The film will be based on Mark Griffin’s biography All That Heaven Allows: A Biography of Rock Hudson, but a writer for the script has yet to be found, so it’ll be awhile before we hear anything about this project.
