The US Army is moving foward on next-generation concealment technology to ensure that American soldiers can hide in plain sight.
Fibrotex has built an Ultra-Light Camouflage Netting System that can be used to conceal soldier’s positions, vehicles, tanks and aircraft. The new “camouflage system will mask soldiers, vehicles and installations from state-of-the-art electro-optical sensors and radars,” the company said Thursday in a press release sent to Business Insider.
Fibrotex has been awarded a contract to supply this advanced camouflage to conceal troops from night vision, thermal imaging, radar and more.
Fibrotex USA
The new program aims to replace outdated camouflage that protect soldiers in the visible spectrum but not against more advanced, high-end sensors. ULCANS “provides more persistent [infrared], thermal & counter-radar performance,” Fibrotex explained.
The Army has awarded Fibrotex a 10-year indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract valued at $ 480 million. Full-scale production will begin next year at a manufacturing facility in McCreary County, Kentucky, where the company expects to create and secure hundreds of new jobs in the coming years.
“Today, more than ever, military forces and opposition groups are using night vision sensors and thermal devices against our troops,” Eyal Malleron, the CEO of Fibrotex USA, said in a statement.
“But, by using Fibrotex’s camouflage, concealment and deception solutions, we make them undetectable again, allowing them to continue keeping us safe.”
Fibrotex USA
The result came from roughly two years of testing at the Army’s Natick Soldier Systems Center, where new technology was tested against the Army’s most advanced sensors.
Fibrotex noted that the netting is reversible, creating the possibility for two distinctly different prints for varied environments. And while outsiders can’t see through the netting, those on the inside have an excellent view of their surroundings, as can be seen in the picture above.

The Mobile Camouflage Solution (MCS) takes concealment to another level, as “the MCS provides concealment while the platform is moving,” the company revealed. Business Insider inquired about the secret sauce to blend in moving vehicles with changing scenery, but Fibrotex would only say that their “technology combines special materials, a unique fabric structure and a dedicated manufacturing process.”
ULCANS and its relevant variants are based on “combat-proven technologies” designed by the Israel-based Fibrotex Technologies Ltd., the parent company for Fibrotex USA, over the past two decades. The companies products have been specifically modified to meet the needs of the Department of Defense.
“We have more than 50 years of experience, with thousands of hours in the field and a deep understanding of conventional and asymmetric warfare. The U.S. Army tested our best camouflage solutions and the camouflage repeatedly demonstrated the ability to defeat all sensors known to be operating in the battlefield and throughout the electromagnetic spectrum,” Malleron explained.

The US Army is getting in on the esports craze too, but the game isn’t one you might expect. Instead of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or Rainbow Six Siege, the military is hosting a tournament for Street Fighter V. The competition will be broadcast on Twitch starting tomorrow from Fort Bliss. The winner from each garrison (tournaments run through the 25th) will go on to the sold-out Grand Finals at PAX West in Seattle on September 1st. What will the winning soldier get for their efforts? A two-night stay at the Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas along with a $ 500 gift card, an Army esports jersey, commemorative coin and Twitch gear.
“The competition will develop soldiers’ outlook and overall fitness using current technology,” the Army writes. “Soldiers train for the competition by improving hand-eye coordination, mental focus and reaction time. These skills help improve a soldier’s overall readiness to help with normal job duties.” Sounds like something Guile would agree with wholeheartedly.
If you’re watching at home, you could walk away with a few prizes as well. There will be an online giveaway with the same prizes the winning soldier will get (sans Twitch gear) and a $ 250 gift card, versus a $ 500 one.

The Army has a new non-lethal weapon to help soldiers in Afghanistan “irritate and deter” potential adversaries with pepper-filled balls, Army Times reports.
The non-lethal launcher, known as the Variable Kinetic System (VKS), is made by PepperBall Technologies. It fires projectiles much like paintballs containing a hot pepper solution.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

The US Army’s official Twitter account “inadvertently” liked Mindy Kaling’s tweet on Saturday that seemed to be making fun of President Donald Trump’s rage-tweets earlier in the day, Lt. Col. Jason Brown, a US Army spokesperson, told Business Insider.
“An operator of the Army’s official Twitter account inadvertently ‘liked’ a tweet whose content would not be endorsed by the Department of the Army. As soon as it was brought to our attention, it was immediately corrected,” Brown wrote in an email to Business Insider.
Kaling had tweeted a picture of Kelly Kapoor, her character from “The Office,” with a quote on the bottom reading: “You guys, I’m like really smart now, you don’t even know.”

Trump sent out a series of tweets earlier on Saturday claiming he was “like, really smart” and “a very stable genius” in response to Michael Wolff’s new book, “Fire & Fury: Inside the Trump White House.” The book quotes multiple current and former cabinet members insulting his intelligence.
Wolff also said in an interview on the “Today” show Friday that 100% of the people around Trump, including top aides and family members, question his intelligence and fitness for office.
He has added, however, that he isn’t certain all of the book’s contents are true.
Kaling responded to the US Army liking her tweet by tweeting “#armystrong.” The US Army, however, had unliked her original tweet by early Sunday.

The US Army did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s follow-up email or phone call asking how the operator liked the tweet, given that the US Army Twitter handle doesn’t follow Kaling.

A US Army war simulation game, adapted to prepare teachers for school shootings, will also allow participants to play the part of the gunman in a mock ‘active shooter’ situation.
There are three playable roles in the video game-like simulation – teacher, shooter, and officer. Suspects can be both adults and children. The virtual program is due to be released free to schools in the coming weeks.

The $ 5.6 million VR program called EDGE (Enhanced Dynamic Geo-Social Environment) was developed by the US Army and the Department of Homeland Security. Similar technology has previously been used to prepare soldiers for war.
Bob Walker, EDGE project manager with Cole Engineering Services, said the simulation allows schools to test what might work best for them in the event of an active shooter situation at their facility. The game also analyzes factors such as automatic closing doors or barricades.
The team, led by Tami Griffith from the Army Research Laboratory, listened to dispatch tapes from the Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook shootings to make the virtual scenario as real as possible. They also spoke with the mother of a Sandy Hook victim.
“She walked through the entire event, incident by incident, explaining it all to us. Very technically she was able to separate herself, and technically tell us what happened, so that we could emulate that in the virtual environment,” Griffith said.

The simulation gives advisory prompts on the screen including locking doors, staying away from windows, and lining up students against the walls for their own protection.
FBI data shows that nearly a third of all mass shootings in the US since 2000 have taken place at schools. According to Everytown Research – a nonprofit organization which advocates for gun control – there have been 275 school shootings since 2013. These include accidental shootings and events where a gun was fired but no one was harmed.
EDGE virtual training has already been rolled out to first responders in which the scenario of an active shooter situation at a hotel is played out.
RT has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment on the extension of the program into the educational sector.
Critics of the project say it is wholly inappropriate and fails to address issues surrounding access to weapons. Other social media users went as far as to suggest the video game offers a training ground to potential attackers.

Jesus Christ. The US Army and DHS intend to release a free game later this year that lets you play the role of a mass school shooter, explicitly modeled after Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Virginia Tech.

So, to help avoid shootings in schools in the US, what do you do?
Ban guns? Nah.
At least put a few basic restrictions on who can buy guns, like not selling them to the mentally ill? Nah.
First person shooter videogame? Yep!Utterly, utterly unhinged.https://t.co/tX2rDuRckf

Bell Helicopter
Bell Helicopter’s next-generation tilt-rotor aircraft, the V-280 Valor, has made its first flight, the company announced in a release Monday.
The black prototype, which resembles the older V-22 Osprey, also made by Textron Inc.’s Bell unit and Boeing Co., completed the roughly maiden flight around 2 p.m. local time at the company’s Amarillo, Texas, facility, according to the company.
“This is an exciting time for Bell Helicopter, and I could not be more proud of the progress we have made with first flight of the Bell V-280,” Mitch Snyder, president and chief executive officer of Bell Helicopter, said in a statement.
“First flight demonstrates our commitment to supporting Department of Defense leadership’s modernization priorities and acquisition reform initiatives,” he added. “The Valor is designed to revolutionize vertical lift for the U.S. Army and represents a transformational aircraft for all the challenging missions our armed forces are asked to undertake.”
Bell’s V-280 Valor is slightly bigger than a UH-60 Black Hawk and hold a crew of four and carry up to 14 passengers. By comparison, the Black Hawk can hold a crew of four and transport 11 troops fully loaded or 20 lightly equipped.
The Valor is competing against SB-1 Defiant, a more conventional helicopter with a pusher-prop for added speed designed by Lockheed Martin Corp.’s Sikorsky unit and Boeing, for the Army’s Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator program.
The demonstrator effort is designed to hone requirements for a Future Vertical Lift acquisition program to fill the Army’s requirement for a mid-sized, next-generation rotorcraft with twice the speed and range of a conventional helicopter to replace its UH-60 Black Hawks probably in the 2030s.
Bell wants to sell the V-280 to all the services, but the Army — with its thousands of Black Hawks alone — offers the biggest potential market. To land the deal, the firm will have to overcome the service’s traditional opposition to tilt-rotor aircraft, which take off and land like a helicopter but fly like a conventional propeller-driven aircraft.
The SB-1 Defiant, meanwhile, is expected to make its first flight in the first half of next year. Lockheed’s Sikorsky earlier this year released footage showing a smaller coaxial design, the S-97 Raider, undergoing flight testing.
The Raider was initially designed for a $ 16 billion U.S. Army weapons acquisition program called the Armed Aerial Scout to replace the OH-58Kiowa Warrior, one of the smallest helicopters in the fleet, which was retired from Army service this year.
While the Army put that acquisition effort on hold due to budget limitations, Sikorsky, maker of the Black Hawk helicopter and other aircraft, still plans to sell the coaxial design in the U.S. and abroad, and the firm along with its suppliers have spent tens of millions of dollars developing the technology.

Heckler and Koch
Despite a brief period of ambiguity wrought by budget-jousting among lawmakers in Congress, the Army’s new and improved sniper rifle is alive and well.
Heckler & Koch showed off its M110A1 7.62 mm semi-automatic sniper rifle, selected for the Army’s Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System (CSASS) program on the floor of the Association of the U.S. Army’s annual conference and exposition in Washington this week, a first up-close-and-personal look at the lightweight rifle.
The M1101A1 HK CSASS is a lightweight version of H&K’s G28E sniper rifle, one of which was also on display at the company’s AUSA spread. The company got to work after Army Contracting Command awarded the gun manufacturer a $ 44.5 million contract in 2016 for a version with a baffle-less OSS suppressor.
At just 16 inches long and 8.7 pounds with an empty magazine, the HK certainly meets the Army’s CSASS requirements size and weight requirements. It boasts a Schmidt & Bender 3-20X50 PMII Ultra Short Scope for improved optics and accuracy.
And with a similar look and feel to the standard M4 and M16 assault rifles, the M1101 will also be familiar to infantry soldiers who may end up wielding it downrange: In September, the branch announced plans to field a modified version specifically for regular infantrymen serving in a designated marksman role.
Heckler and Koch
“The [engineering contract proposals] for the CSASS were implemented in response to user feedback and test results conducted by other government agencies,” PEO Soldier Debi Dawson told Task & Purpose of the late-September contract adjustment. “The modifications improve reliability, durability, ergonomics and extended range performance.”
The Army contract for the HK CSASS came with a maximum order of 3,643 rifles, although it’s still unclear if Congress’ ongoing budget tribulations will affect future acquisition.
And although there’s no word on when the lethal new rifle will end up in soldiers’ hands, the promise of a souped-up 7.62mm sniper rifle for a squad-level marksman is still worth looking forward to.
