Build Your Own Guns And Take Down An Armada In ‘Mothergunship’ https://briefnews.eu/build-your-own-guns-and-take-down-an-armada-in-mothergunship/ https://briefnews.eu/build-your-own-guns-and-take-down-an-armada-in-mothergunship/#respond Mon, 16 Jul 2018 19:46:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/build-your-own-guns-and-take-down-an-armada-in-mothergunship/ mothergunship1.jpg
Mothergunship is all about escalation. You like shooting enemies? Here’s a dozen angry robots for you. You like dodging bullets? Sure, have hundreds of bullets coming your way. You like guns? Ho ho ho, have I got news for you…

If you have played Terrible Posture Games’ debut title, Tower of Guns, all of this sounds vaguely familiar. However, Mothergunship is an evolution of the previous game’s concept, taking the parts that made it work and cranking them up to 11.

This time, your goal is to bring down the almighty Mothergunship that has dared to enter Earth’s orbit, threatening destruction of the human race and whatnot. To do that, you first have to take out its armada of smaller ships, all of which have a convenient self destruct button that’s just waiting to be pushed. Small problem, though: those buttons are guarded by rooms full of robots and turrets.

Thankfully, those mechanical enemies drop coins, which in turn allow you to buy new gun parts in the conveniently-located gun shops on those ships. And here, the real fun begins. You see, those guns you’re wielding – you can change them however you see fit if you have the right parts. A minigun on top of a flame thrower on top of a rail gun next to a rocket launcher? Yup, that’s entirely possible, and that’s just the gun in your right hand, ha! Sometimes, the ridiculous constructions you wield can take up half the screen but hey, you just point and shoot with these babies and every robot dies.

mothergunship2.jpg

I also love the way that Mothergunship handles failure. You can retry levels as much as you want if you die. However, the gun parts you brought on this mission are lost in the case of your demise. There are main missions and optional missions that allow you to stock up on parts, so you’re never really lacking in gun parts. Still, it hurts when you lose your best setups due to a bad run. (I’d also appreciate a “take what I used last time” button there, as you have to scroll through all of your parts again before embarking on a new mission.)

The shooting itself feels good, with lots of verticality and mobility thanks to multiple jumps you can make. Sometimes, it gets a bit too much, with too many enemies on-screen and too many projectiles coming at you from every direction, but I suspect that’s just the part where you have to get really good at the game. I’m still working on that, mind.

There will be co-op added sometime after launch, as well as leaderboards, daily challenges, and a little more of everything, basically. That’s good, but even now, I can heartily recommend Mothergunship for its ridiculous running and gunning and shooting and crafting and jumping.

You can purchase Mothergunship from Steam for $ 24.99, starting tomorrow. PS4 and Xbox One versions are also available. For more information, visit the game’s website or follow its Twitter account for updates.

Nissan Armada Mountain Patrol welcomes overlanding season https://briefnews.eu/nissan-armada-mountain-patrol-welcomes-overlanding-season/ https://briefnews.eu/nissan-armada-mountain-patrol-welcomes-overlanding-season/#respond Thu, 17 May 2018 03:11:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nissan-armada-mountain-patrol-welcomes-overlanding-season/

Nissan is throwing another multi-day overlanding bash ahead of the Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona, this week. Last year, the carmaker debuted the Titan Project Basecamp overlanding pickup at the expo. This year — even though Nissan’s event is called “Titan Adventure” — Nissan went with a survivalist SUV called the Armada Mountain Patrol. Other than the fact that you’re more likely to see a feral Martha Stewart in the deep woods eating canned rations before you’d see a bugged-out Armada, the Armada Mountain Patrol looks the real deal.

The ugliest trails lead to the best views, so there’s Lowrance navigation, a Calmini six-inch lift with Icon Vehicle Dynamics coilovers, 17-inch Icon Rebound wheels on 35-inch Nitto Trail Grappler tires, an ARB air compressor, Calmini rock sliders, and an arena’s worth of lights from the roof to the wheel wells from Baja Designs.

Holding everything down on the way are a Rhino Rack Backbone cargo carrier and Pelican cases. When it’s time for good living at the campsite, the interior’s been fitted with a Dometic ‘fridge and freezer, Otterbox Venture coolers, and ARB pull-out drawers. Cascadia Vehicle Tents provided the four-person rooftop tent, extra lounging and bedding for everyone in the eight-person Armada. Part of that crew can roll out their sleeping bags in the Alps Mountineering pop-up tent and lounge in chairs under the Rhino Rack Batwing awning. And they can all drive one another nuts with useless chatter on the Rugged Radios off-road radio system.

Should you get stuck, a 12,000-pound Warn Zeon Platinum winch with Factor 55 closed-loop shackle mounts inside a custom Calmini front bumper should get most recovery jobs done. When the trail is back-breakingly nasty, there’s a Rhino Rack shovel, MaxTrax, and a Hi-Lift jack. A Calmini spare tire swingout on a custom Calmini rear bumper makes for easy access, and spare fuel in RotoPax jerry cans keep it all moving.

The Armada Mountain Patrol goes on display at Overland Expo West this weekend at Fort Tuthill County Park in Flagstaff. After that, expect to see it rumble into cities around the country for the rest of the year.

‘Ready Player One’ Author Ernest Cline’s ‘Armada’ to Be Made Into a Movie https://briefnews.eu/ready-player-one-author-ernest-clines-armada-to-be-made-into-a-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/ready-player-one-author-ernest-clines-armada-to-be-made-into-a-movie/#respond Tue, 03 Apr 2018 19:59:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ready-player-one-author-ernest-clines-armada-to-be-made-into-a-movie/ armada movie

It looks like Ready Player One will just be the beginning of Ernest Cline‘s buzzy Hollywood career. An Armada movie adaptation, based on Cline’s sophomore novel, is officially in development at Universal Studios.

Screenwriter Dan Mazeau has been tapped to pen the script to the Armada movie, according to Deadline.

Cline wrote an early draft of the script and will remain in collaboration with Mazeau as the Wrath of the Titans screenwriter pens another draft. Mazeau’s other writing credits include World’s Most Wanted for Vin Diesel, Section 6 for Joe Cornish and Marc Platt, and an untitled Van Helsing movie. He has also written scripts for The Flash and a Jonny Quest adaptation.

Armada is Cline’s follow-up novel after the soaring success of his literary debut, Ready Player One. The 2015 book follows a teenager who plays an online video game fighting an alien invasion, only to be recruited by an international galactic army who had been using the game to train him and others to fend off a real alien invasion. So basically, a riff on The Last Starfighter.

Like Ready Player One, Armada is also filled to the brim with Easter eggs and and references to ’80s and ’90s pop culture.

Armada wasn’t quite as well-received as Ready Player One, though it remained on the New York Times bestseller list for five weeks. AV Club called it “a pale imitation of” Cline’s own work,” while The Washington Post said Armada was an exercise in “nostalgic narcissism.” However, many reviewers noted how cinematic the story is, observing that while it may be a poor novel, Armada would make for a great movie. How fortunate, then, that Universal is bringing Armada to the medium to which it possibly belongs.

Cline is enjoying the box office run of Ready Player One, which just crossed the $ 200 million threshold worldwide. Cline co-wrote the Steven Spielberg-directed blockbuster with Zak Penn. It’s uncertain whether he’ll keep his writing credit for Armada as Mazeau boards the project.

Dan Farah (Ready Player One) and Dylan Clark (Planet of the Apes) are producing Armada. No planned release date has been set by Universal.

Instead of imitating the boxy and costly stalwarts of this popular segment, the Armada breaks the mold—sort of. After all, it’s still a big-bodied, fuel-thirsty family dreadnought. But the three-row Armada has a serene, expensive interior and an upscale exterior that enable it to undermine high-rent rivals when it comes to price. While others have superior standard features and more powertrain options, the Nissan does just fine with its 390-hp V-8 and seven-speed automatic transmission. Available with rear- or all-wheel drive, it can tow up to 8500 pounds. All that and extensive active safety options have transformed this former blue-collar hauler into an attainable luxury-SUV alternative. READ MORE ››

–

The second-generation Nissan Armada launched for the 2017 model year as a reengineered version of the international Y62 Patrol. For the 2018 Chicago auto show, Nissan is giving a roundabout hat tip to those roots with a one-off, winter-challenging off-road Armada called the Snow Patrol [cue the alternative rock].

–

Nissan has well established how much it enjoys the frozen stuff, having created a Juke Nismo RS on tracks, a Murano on tracks, and a Rogue on tracks. (If you haven’t noticed, Nissan does tend to love its themes.) So one might expect the Armada Snow Patrol to involve tracks as well, but that assumption would be incorrect—at least in part. With the help of Pro Comp and Smittybilt, Nissan transformed the luxury-leaning family SUV into an off-road-ready snowmobile hauler, complete with a 370z roadster on tracks and skis hooked up to the trailer hitch.

–

–

The Armada already had a solid core for an off-pavement rover. It is powered by a 390-hp 5.6-liter V-8, is built on a stout ladder frame, has available all-wheel drive, and is rated to tow up to 8500 pounds. With that as the base, Nissan ramped up capability at all four corners. The Snow Patrol has a two-inch front and one-inch rear suspension lift and sits on 20-by-9-inch Cognito Series 61 wheels wrapped in 35-inch Pro Comp MT2 off-road tires.

–

The front chin was replaced with an M1A2 Smittybilt front bumper with a bar and an XRC 12,000-pound winch. Nissan attached M1A running boards for extra armor, while M1 fender flares were employed to house the larger tires. Extra storage and lighting is covered by a roof-mounted DR36 two-row LED light bar that can switch between flood and spotlight modes, grille-mounted circular LED motorsport lights, and a four-by-four-foot roof rack. The interior complements the striped blue exterior wrap with creamy off-white leather seats with gray inserts, Snow Patrol logos, blue contrast stitching, and blue piping.

–

–

A project that could have debuted as a SEMA car, the Snow Patrol is a one-off simply built to demonstrate what the Armada could become fairly easily with a mild cash outlay for aftermarket parts. That 370Z, on the other hand, might require a little more work.

2018 Nissan Armada Drivers' Notes Review | SUV tradition in a velvet glove https://briefnews.eu/2018-nissan-armada-drivers-notes-review-suv-tradition-in-a-velvet-glove/ https://briefnews.eu/2018-nissan-armada-drivers-notes-review-suv-tradition-in-a-velvet-glove/#respond Thu, 11 Jan 2018 19:35:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2018-nissan-armada-drivers-notes-review-suv-tradition-in-a-velvet-glove/

While it might not be as rugged as its Patrol cousin sold overseas, our 2018 Nissan Armada tester makes up for it in creature comforts. Leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, heated steering wheel and a whole suite of driver assists, this Platinum-trim Armada combines the confidence of a Titan with much of the comfort of an Infiniti QX80. In addition to the standard equipment, our four-wheel-drive tester includes the second-row captain’s chair package ($ 450) and carpeted floor and cargo mats ($ 310). In all, it rings up at $ 63,545, including destination charges.

Senior Editor, Green, John Beltz Snyder: The Armada is not really my cup of tea, and I wasn’t going to drive it this week. On the ride into the office on Monday, though, the snow was coming down hard, and cars were in the ditch, on wreckers, some shiny-side down. Having flashbacks of getting briefly stuck where my driveway meets my crappily plowed road in a Cadillac ATS the week before, I signed up for the Nissan Armada instead of the rear-drive Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid for my drive home. My commute was a breeze.

Despite being a huge monster, the view from the driver’s seat of the Armada was great. A high seating position, relatively low beltline, big mirrors and massive windows all around, I had no problem making my way through rush hour traffic in the icy dark. Even better, the Armada Platinum comes with Nissan’s Safety Shield suite and adaptive cruise control, acting like an extra set of eyes going down the road. Even in city traffic with no cruise control, the Armada was happy to brake early and smoothly, even bringing the vehicle to a complete stop without on its own without beeping and flashing lights in my face.

It was a cozy ride. The interior is spacious, and the leather upholstery comfortable. I warmed up with the heated seats and steering wheel, and listened to a podcast via Bluetooth. The In addition to the smoothness of the adaptive cruise control (though there were two instances when I had to intervene when the Armada wasn’t slowing down quickly enough), the ride was also surprisingly compliant. There was a little bit of road noise, but the sound of the V8 wasn’t too intrusive either.

The only thing that I had trouble getting past was the weird pleats in the leather on the door panel.

Associate Editor Joel Stocksdale: Man, this thing is classic body-on-frame SUV through and through. Walking up to it is like approaching a Clydesdale, and I feared it wouldn’t be as easy to maneuver. Fortunately, some of the traditional SUV characteristics actually make it fairly easy to thread through the city. As John mentioned, visibility is excellent. Even putting the seat as low as possible, you’re still sitting up high, and you’re looking through tall, upright glass all-around. The corners are easy to spot, and the steering is very light, so you don’t have to wrestle it in slow motion to drive it.

It does take some flailing though when making sharp turns because of the steering’s remarkably slow ratio. That plus the steering’s lightness and lack of feel keep this truck from feeling even remotely quick and sporty. But something this big probably shouldn’t be making sudden movements anyway. At least the suspension is tuned such that it doesn’t wallow and roll too much in corners.

Speaking of the suspension, the Armada’s ride is quite good. It absorbs bumps very well, and it’s impressively quiet. Even the tires didn’t transmit much sound over imperfections. You can still hear the V8 under the hood, though, and it’s a sweet sounding thing. But it could probably use a bit more torque (or less weight to lug around). It tended to rev pretty high when brisk acceleration was requested, and the pace it returned wasn’t actually that brisk. The transmission is sluggish to shift, but at least it’s smooth.

The interior also shared some traditional SUV quirks. The tall greenhouse and short dash definitely helped with visibility, and Nissan has included a sufficient amount of wood and soft leather. But the ergonomics are a bit awkward. It’s a bit of a stretch to the controls on the center stack, especially the touch screen, and any knobs closer to the passenger. Also, for some reason, the climate controls are way at the bottom, even below the CD player controls, which is inconvenient, especially when sitting so high up.

I can’t speak to the Armada’s off-road abilities, but at least on-road, it’s a solid, unexceptional drive that’s sure to be appreciated by SUV die-hards. But for average buyers, a more modern, unibody, possibly car-based crossover may actually provide a better everyday experience.
