Augmented reality (AR) has played prominently in nearly all of Apple’s events since iOS 11 was introduced, Tim Cook has said he believes it will be as revolutionary as the smartphone itself, and AR was Apple’s biggest focus in sessions with developers at WWDC this year.
But why? Most users don’t think the killer app for AR has arrived yet—unless you count Pokémon Go. The use cases so far are cool, but they’re not necessary and they’re arguably a lot less cool on an iPhone or iPad screen than they would be if you had glasses or contacts that did the same things.
From this year’s WWDC keynote to Apple’s various developer sessions hosted at the San Jose Convention Center and posted online for everyone to view, though, it’s clear that Apple is investing heavily in augmented reality for the future.

It’s been over six months since Apple rolled out its augmented reality framework ARKit in September, and ARKit apps have been downloaded over 13 million times. Games are still leading the way, comprising 47 percent of installs according to market analyst Sensor Tower. Sensor Tower notes that its analysis only encompasses apps that “prim…Read More

GUEST:
With only 2,000 ARKit-enabled apps to its name and installs showing a downward trend, the hype around Apple’s augmented reality technology went quickly from red-hot to lukewarm. News of the latest ARKit update has reignited excitement among developers and brands alike, with the changes inching us closer to a new world of AR possibilities and increased adoption. The question is, can Apple’s news finally be the much-anticipated catalyst that shifts the current lackluster perception of AR from short-term gimmick to long-term staple for brands?
Apple’s recent ARKit changes have opened up an ocean of possibilities for AR experiences, and the quiet ripples around the AR debate have quickly massed into tidal waves. Developers, brands, and consumers are starting to understand that AR can indeed be more than a bit of fun: it can be genuinely useful. And this realization might just push ARKit adoption on a whole new trajectory.
From a developer’s perspective, the changes enable designers to make their AR experiences react to the real world in a much more believable and accurate way. Before ARKit, most developers could only really use marker-based AR, which restricted the experience to being overlaid on a physical marker in the real world — and if that marker moved out of the field of view of the camera, the experience would disappear.
Then, when ARKit first launched, it took away the need for the marker — giving developers much more freedom by suddenly enabling the experience to be anywhere around you. But it was still limited — it could only detect horizontal surfaces such as tables and floors, which meant that although you could do things such as simulate a ball bouncing off the floor, you couldn’t bounce it off a wall or a door or a pillar. The experience would stop working, thus breaking the illusion.
But this new update provides the additional functionality that allows you to be able to track walls and doors and any vertical surface. So, not only can your AR objects interact with those surfaces — for instance, an animated character leaning against a doorframe — it also means that the effects within the experience, such as lighting, can be made much more realistic.
For example, we can simulate lighting within the experience to reflect where windows and doors would be in a space, therefore casting shadows and reflections that are true to life. All of this adds an additional level of believability – making the experience more immersive, while allowing developers to have more fun too.
The other major feature that ARKit adds is the capability to detect markers, which it couldn’t actually do before. This means you can layer your AR experience with triggers for new content. So, you could be using an AR experience which then detects a marker, which then triggers the next stage of content — giving you a staggered and comprehensive overall experience.
This opens up all sorts of exciting opportunities, from gaming to storytelling to brand experiences. And the more compelling the experience, the more developers will be interested in trying it and engaging with it.
To date, the growth and adoption of AR has been stunted by its Achilles heel: the widespread perception that it’s cool, but not very useful. In reality, devices like the Microsoft HoloLens have shown us that far from being a gimmick, AR can be an incredibly powerful tool. You only have to read about the medical uses the HoloLens is being put to – for example, during cross-continent surgery – to see that.
What this ARKit update does is put the power that the (very expensive) HoloLens offers into the hands of anybody with a reasonably modern smartphone.
And the scope of use is diverse: from education to medicine, entertainment or construction. Imagine being able to point your tablet at a wall in a new building development and have X-ray vision showing you where all the pipework and cabling runs in the wall. That’s a genuinely useful application and it’s just there, on your smartphone, in your hand, in the moment.
Fortunately, amongst the serious talk, the fun hasn’t fizzled. There’s much more potential to design addictive and responsive AR mobile games too. So, all in all, the update will make AR more engaging and useful, both of which are crucial for adoption.
AR has always been about making an existing environment into something better than it already is — and the more it can model and reason with the environment it’s being used in, the more powerfully it can do that. This opens the floodgates of potential for in-the-moment AR experiences. Smart brands will turn this into an opportunity for enhanced ROI. The question is, how?
With augmented point of sale materials, brands can appeal to customers more directly, as Ferrari proved when AR first started attracting attention. Now the ARKit updates can take that direct appeal even further – making it accessible to everyone. Imagine a poster for a new car at a bus stop or in a waiting room. With ARKit, you scan the poster and the phone will put you in the point of view of the driver, so you’re free to explore the inside of the car with a good sense of scale. You could slide over to the passenger seat to see what that’s like. Turn around to look in the back. You could even reduce the car to a radio control size and drive it around on the sidewalk in front of you.

It’s been a few weeks since iOS 11 rolled out to compatible iPhones, and hundreds of apps now utilize the augmented reality capabilities of ARKit. Though some apps only have AR features as an add-on, there have been a steady stream of releases that are ARKit exclusives. In that category, games are coming out on top, according to market analyst Sensor Tower. Although games make up only 35 percent of ARKit-exclusive apps, they represent 53 percent of AR downloads and 62 percent of revenue.

PlaySide Studios’s AR Dragon is top of the free-to-play chart and it accounts for 20 percent of ARKit-exclusive downloads in the unpaid category. Directive Games’s The Machines is No. 1 on the paid games chart.
Utilities have also seen success. A number of measuring apps sit in the top 10, such as AR MeasureKit, AirMeasure, PLNAR, and TapMeasure, which is the top paid ARKit exclusive app outside of the games category. Vito Technology’s Monster Park – Dino World, which enables users to interact with dinosaurs, is the top-grossing non-game app and No. 2 grossing after The Machines.

It’s unclear still when AR will reach mass consumer adoption, but if the initial numbers are any indication, games will lead the way.

GUEST:
AR/VR has become a two speed market, with mobile AR set to have over twice the number of users at launch in 2017 than the entire AR/VR headset market by 2021. Apple ARKit, Google ARCore, and Facebook’s Camera Effects Platform could have 900 million users by the end of 2018, with their launch changing the trajectory of the whole market. Digi-Capital has fundamentally revised the AR/VR market thesis, analysis and forecasts in its Augmented/Virtual Reality Report, Augmented Reality Report and Virtual Reality Report:
The combined impact is a significant upgrade for AR and a material downgrade for VR. This completely replaces all previous forecasts.
Above: Digi-Capital AR/VR Revenue Forecast
Mobile AR’s installed base could grow to over 3 billion by 2021, while smartglasses, premium VR and mobile VR combined might top 100 million in the same timeframe (so tens of millions for each platform individually). This makes mobile AR’s installed base more than 25 times all AR/VR headsets long-term.
Where mobile AR dominates AR/VR installed base, it could account for only two-thirds of total market revenue by 2021. Mobile AR software’s economics are similar to the broader mobile market, where vast user bases with relatively low ARPU (average revenue per user) can deliver high growth and profitability. Smartglasses, premium VR and (to a lesser extent) mobile VR benefit from significantly higher ARPU due to hardware sales, but much smaller installed bases limit their non-hardware revenue potential. Mobile AR revenue could be 4.8 times that of smartglasses, 1.3 times premium VR and 1.5 times mobile VR revenue in 2018, growing to 3.9 times smartglasses, 4.8 times premium VR and 9.6 times mobile VR revenue by 2021.
Above: Digi-Capital AR/VR Sector Forecast
eCommerce could be the largest revenue stream across AR/VR by 2021 due to the scale of mobile AR’s installed base and increased conversion rates. Houzz has already delivered 11 times sales conversion using mobile AR, so mobile AR eCommerce could further consolidate Amazon, eBay and Alibaba’s dominant positions. Hardware sales (particularly consumer smartglasses and second-generation standalone premium VR headsets when they get here) are a close second, followed by adspend, games and non-games app revenues. Enterprise/B2B revenue will be driven primarily by AR, with video and location based (theme park) revenues at a much lower level.
(Note: Telco data/voice revenues have been removed, as ARKit/ARCore’s ubiquity on standard smartphones/tablets has taken away telcos’ ability to implement premium mobile AR related pricing. Similarly, mobile AR hardware revenue has been excluded with Tango’s retirement and the iPhone X not including a rear-facing depth sensor.)
Above: Digi-Capital AR/VR Regional Forecast
With mobile AR’s geographic distribution broadly similar to current smartphone/tablet distribution, and VR’s distribution broadly similar to current games market distribution, AR/VR revenue could be dominated by Asia (particularly China, Japan and South Korea). This could see Asia roughly equal in size to North America and Europe combined. As smartglasses’ early consumer growth could come from mobile tethered smartglasses, its revenues might follow a similar geographic pattern.
Because of consumer smartglasses five consumer challenges (hero device, all-day battery life, cellular connectivity, app ecosystem, telco cross-subsidization), predominantly enterprise focused smartglasses sales could remain in the hundreds of thousands of units through 2019. Our long-held view since 2015 of Apple as the catalyst for AR proved to be correct this year. So its potential launch of mobile tethered smartglasses as an iPhone peripheral could be the catalyst for the consumer smartglasses market in the 2020 timeframe (followed by Samsung and other major phone makers).
Time to fire up that iPhone X and look into the future.

If you’ve been following out Sketchfab Favs feature, you’ll know that the platform is home to nearly two million 3D models and artworks, made in apps like Google’s Tilt Brush, Oculus’ Medium, and Gravity Sketch as well as more traditional software. From today, these creations can be placed in the real world.
Sketchfab has just updated its iOS app to include support for Apple’s ARKit. That means that users can select any of the creations currently live on the platform, and project it into the real world through an iPhone or iPad display. As such, animated characters can come to life inside real-world environments, and VR artists have an entirely new way to explore their work and others’.
All you need to do is load up any Sketchfab model inside the app and then tap and AR icon, just like you’d tap a VR icon to view models in headsets. ARKit will allow you to walk around the model and get up close with it, essentially using your phone as a camera.
Sketchfab says Android integration via Google’s ARCore is also on the way.

A very good, 11/10 app may soon be heading to an iPhone or iPad near you.
The term Dogmented Reality was first coined for a 2016 April Fools gag from Meta, but now it’s very much a real thing for some smartphone users. Follow the Dogmented Reality hashtag on Twitter and you’ll find scores of people touring the world with virtual pets that sit in our reality a little like you’ll find in other apps like Pokémon Go. The problem is that, just like those other apps, these virtual beings aren’t aware of their real world surroundings. They’re just sitting on the screen as an overlay on top of the real world.
Apple’s new ARKit platform might be about to change that, however.
any sufficiently advanced doggo technology is indistinguishable from magic.

The Good Dogs Twitter account yesterday tweeted out that the Dogmented Reality app is “coming soon” to ARKit and iOS11. ARKit was revealed earlier this month, with some seriously impressive tech demos showcasing spatial awareness for virtual objects that will take apps like Pokémon Go and more to the next level. With ARKit, dogs in Dogmented Reality will actually be able to understand the environment around them.
As we reported yesterday, there’s also some very intriguing stuff being made with ARKit. The platform stands as a rival to Google’s new Tango platform for Android devices. Hopefully it will one day also serve as the basis for the long-rumored AR glasses from the company to compete with the likes of HoloLens and Magic Leap. That’s a far off future, though.

Apple’s new ARKit platform basically looks like HoloLens inside of an iPhone. All that’s missing is a controller-free interaction system. A new patent uncovered this week suggests that may be on the way, though.
Patently Apple has revealed a new filing from the company for a new 3D camera system with depth sensing capabilities used for gesture recongition. The system takes data from the reflected points of a light beam to “compute a depth map” of the area around it. Interestingly enough, the patent points to this specific type of depth mapping as a possible type of control for gaming.
“Such depth mapping may be applied to interactive video games,” the patent states. “For example, a subject may interact with a game by making various gestures with his hand, and depth mapping may be used to identify the gestures.”
It sounds like interacting with the light beam and the reflections will give the camera positional data on your hands, then. The patent doesn’t make any mention of AR but this certainly seems like a good fit for the tech.
On HoloLens, you interact with virtual software by holding your hand out and making a pinching motion. This type of controller free system allows for easy navigation of menus, even if it isn’t the most versatile tool when it comes to controlling games and other content.
We’d be eager to see just how expressive you can be with Apple’s solution. Currently the company doesn’t have an official AR headset to pair it with, but such a device has been rumored for a long time now. Perhaps this system could one day help us stroke our new AR dogs?
