The new record comes less than a year after her last studio effort, Sweetener, which became a global success last summer. Now, after the transatlantic success of its enormous title track, the new record – thank u, next (lower case intentional) – has landed on streaming services. And safe to say, it’s already an early contender for the most buzzworthy record of the year.

The album’s name has been trending on Twitter since its release, as have the song titles Ghostin and NASA.

The lyrics to Ghostin in particular have left fans stunned.

It’s been suggested that the track is about her relationship with Pete Davidson following the death of Mac Miller.

The star had said on social media last month: “[it’s about] feeling badly for the person you’re with bc [because] you love somebody else. feeling badly bc he can tell he can’t compare…. and how i should be ghosting him.”

In the song, she sings: “I know you hear me when I cry, I try to hold it in the night, when you’re sleeping next to me. But its your arms that I need this time.

“Look at the cards that we’ve been dealt, if you were anybody else, probably wouldn’t last a day.

“Every tear’s a rain parade from hell, baby you do it so well.”

In My Head is also strongly resonating.

“My imagination’s too creative, they see demon, I see angel, angel, angel without a halo, wingless angel,” the superstar says on the track.

“Falling, falling, but I never thought you’d leave me, falling, falling, needed something to believe in, oh, I thought you were the one.”

Fake Smile also has a heartbreaking edge to it, as the star opens up about fame.

“I read the things the write about me,” she confesses. “Hear what they saying on the TV, it’s crazy.

“It’s getting hard for them to shock me, but every now and then it’s shocking, don’t blame me.

“I know it’s the life that I chose, but baby I’m grateful I want you to know, I’m happy for the love and all the above, if I’m being honest I done been through way too much.”

Later this afternoon the Christmas Number One of 2018 will be announced. Mark Hoyle’s single We Built This City On Sausage Rolls, which started as a joke, is currently the No 1 single on iTunes. And in a generous gesture, LadBaby is having all profits made from the song go to food bank charity The Trussell Trust. Betting was suspended for underdog YouTuber LadBaby yesterday, however, a chart expert claims he won’t beat Ava Max or Ariana Grande despite the enthusiasm.

Speaking with the BBC, chart expert James Masterton said: “People will cheerfully buy a charity single.

“It’s a nice, tangible, feel-good gesture. But they won’t necessarily listen to it.”

After all, LadBaby’s We Built This City On Sausage Rolls parody song isn’t in Spotify’s Top 40 most played chart.

In fact on YouTube, it’s not even made 1 million views, while Grande’s Thank U, Next get an average of 10 million hits a day.

And in a chart where streams are more important than sales, this sadly means LadBaby’s chances of making Christmas Number One are slipping.

Nevertheless, LadBay is still expected to make the Top 10, after numbers were cut off at midnight last night.

Masterson added: “That’s still a far better performance than many other random Christmas charity efforts of recent years, so fair play.”

When asked how he would celebrate with his family, Mark replied: “ [If we did it we’d] have a few drinks, get some sausage rolls in.”

The 2018 Christmas Number One will be announced at 5:45 pm by Scott Mills on BBC Radio One.

Jimmy Fallon has an early Christmas gift for you. (Ariana Grande’s small enough to fit in your stocking, right?)

On Tuesday’s Tonight Show, Fallon reunited with his former SNL castmates Tracy Morgan, Chris Kattan and Horatio Santz for an encore performance of “I Wish It Was Christmas Today,” the same holiday tune the quartet first played together on a 2000 episode of SNL. (The original tune was later covered by The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas.) This time, they get an assist from Grande — although, disappointingly, she doesn’t sing at all in the clip. She just stands behind Kattan with her hands on his shoulders and dances, adding to the low-key hipster vibe of it all.

Just like in the original, Sanz sings the lead vocals, Fallon bashes away on an electric keyboard, Kattan flashes a slightly unsettling smile and everybody dances around like a doofus. Plus, the matching ugly red Christmas sweaters are a nice touch.

Other interesting tidbits from Spotify’s list includes the fact that while hip-hop was 2018’s most popular genre, Latin music continued to grow rapidly. Artists J Balvin and Bad Bunny (both featured on Cardi B’s I Like It), along with Ozuna, made the top-ten most streamed artists list. Last year, only one artist (Daddy Yankee) made the top ten.

The top-streamed tracks of the year were God’s Plan by Drake, SAD! from XXXTENTACION, Post Malone’s rockstar (feat. 21 Savage) and Psycho (feat. Ty Dolla $ ign) and In My Feelings by Drake. Over recent days the megastar has been teasing clips of the accompanying music video, which will pay homage to iconic teen movies. Excitement for the clip – which is set to have cameos from the likes of Jennifer Coolidge and Mean Girls’ Jonathan Bennett – is through the roof. So when is it actually getting released?

Well, of course, the short answer is nobody knows.

But given the sheer volume of teasers Ariana has been releasing in recent days, it makes sense for it to be sooner rather than later.

Still, the star has only very recently dropped the promo clip for her previous single Breathin’, which has racked up an incredible 38 million plays in a couple of weeks.

Safe to say the Thank U, Next video could do even better – but for now the wait continues.

On Friday, Grande confirmed on Twitter that it’s “coming soon”, a post retweeted by music video director Hannah Lux Davis, with whom she has worked several times in the past.

Other stars of the video will include Alexa Luria as Karen Smith, Courtney Chipolone as Gretchen Wieners and fellow Victorious star Elizabeth “Liz” Gillies as Cady Heron.

Tayla Parx, Victoria Monét, Patience Aquart, Luz Remigio-Frias and Nekai Johnson also had their involvement confirmed by an earlier pic.

Gigi Hadid demanded a release date on one snap, saying: “Has she told us when yet” – but Grande kept tight-lipped on the details.

Thank U, Next caps off an incredible year for Grande; whose album Sweetener topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Its lead single No Tears Left To Cry peaked at No3 in the US and No2 in the UK, while follow-up God Is A Woman was a Top 10 smash on both sides of the pond.

Thank U, Next has broken a slew of records, including most plays in a single day on Spotify for a female artist. It was the first female-sung song to debut at No1 in the US since Adele’s Hello three years ago.

What’s more, it is the bookies’ favourite to be Christmas No1 in the UK next month.

The popstar is currently at the top of the Singles Chart in the UK with thank u, next (sic), which has broken several streaming records since its release earlier this month. Its popularity is so strong that bookies think it could still be ahead of the competition when Christmas rolls around. So could Ariana be our festive chart-topper?

This year’s Christmas chart will be announced on Friday, December 21 – meaning her track will need a lot of staying power to keep ahead of the pack.

And with the star revealing that more music has been recorded and is awaiting release, could she even pull off the accomplishment with a different song altogether?

Whatever the case, she is currently the 2/1 favourite after a huge gamble was placed on her by a mystery punter.

“We have been knocked over in the last 24 hours on Ariana Grande landing the UK Christmas number one single this year with thank u, next and if the American popstar does top the charts, the bookmakers will be paying out long into Christmas Day,” said Coral’s John Hill.

The previous favourite, Elton John, is now 6/1; while Clean Bandit are 8/1.

The latter group managed it two years ago with Rockabye, which had interestingly been at the summit for several weeks in the run-up to Christmas. Their latest offering is the song Baby, featuring lead vocals from Marina and the Diamonds.

X Factor favourite, and presumed winner-in-waiting, Dalton Harris is also on 8/1, although the final of the ITV show will air several weeks before the Christmas chart this year.

Lady Gaga is also 8/1, with the soundtrack from A Star Is Born still proving popular. Ed Sheeran, last year’s festive chart-topper, is on 10/1.

Little Mix are also priced at 10/1 following the release of new album LM5, and they have plenty of promotion coming up: they’ll be on Strictly Come Dancing, The X Factor and The Graham Norton Show over the coming weeks.

Queen are on 10/1 too, following the release of Bohemian Rhapsody in cinemas.

The Christmas chart will log audio streams, video streams, downloads and physical single sales from midnight on Friday, December 14 to 23:59 on Thursday, December 20.

The rankings will then be revealed on Friday, December 21.

In a Saturday morning series of Tweets, Ariana Grande confirmed the name of her next album will be “Thank U, Next,” a phrase that the singer previously used to diss her ex-fiancé Pete Davidson.

When a fan asked, “Is thank u, next gonna be the last track of the album?” Grande responded with, “Yes.”

In its seventh week on release, the album has hopped back up one spot to reclaim the throne.

This means it replaces Ariana Grande’s Sweetener, which had hit the summit last week.

Mamma Mia 2’s soundtrack had initially debuted in the Top 5 before the film hit cinemas, and then rapidly ascended to Number One – where it remained for four weeks. Grande then forced it to spend a week at No2.

Now, it’s back in pole position, narrowly ahead of the unmovable Greatest Showman soundtrack at No2, while Grande slips to No3.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again was the best-selling record of the week in terms of physical units, while The Greatest Showman did best on digital downloads, and Grande’s Sweetener racked up the most streams.

But when all three metrics were combined, and the rules of sales-equivalent streams were applied, it was the ABBA-centric album that came out on top, trumping Greatest Showman by just 2,000 combined equivalent copies.

George Ezra’s Staying At Tamara’s is at No4, while Drake’s Scorpion holds at No5.

Further down, the highest new entry is from Interpol with Marauder at No6, also this week’s best-selling vinyl.

Alice in Chains get their first ever UK Top 10 at No9 with Rainier Fog, while K-Pop outfit BTS claim their first ever UK Top 20 album with Love Yourself: Answer at No14.

Mamma Mia 2 has continued to leave fans and analysts impressed since its release in July.

As of last weekend, it was still in the Top 2 in the UK chart, and within just £9 million of matching the huge box office total achieved by its 2008 predecessor.

Although many still doubt the sequel can eclipse the first film in box office receipts, it has got far closer than many had predicted.

The sequel picked up better-than-expected reviews and has benefitted from very positive word of mouth from fans.

Songs included this time around include Angel Eyes, Fernando, Andante Andante, When I Kissed The Teacher and My Love My Life.

The likes of Dancing Queen, Super Trouper and Mamma Mia also return for second outings.
