  • A restaurant in Oakland, California is losing business because of the stench of dead fish caused by a huge algae bloom.
  • The restaurant's staff recently scooped out 150 pounds of dead fish.
  • Business is down 60%, according to the restaurant's operations manager.

One hundred and fifty pounds of dead smelly fish isn't exactly the recipe for a thriving lakeside restaurant.

Sadly, it's the exact scenario facing Lake Chalet, a seafood restaurant and bar in Oakland, California, that has what's usually considered a prime alfresco opportunity on its dock that extends out into Lake Merritt, the city's downtown 140-acre tidal lagoon.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday that the restaurant has been losing customers due to the stench caused by a bloom of algae that is killing thousands of fish in the lake.

The restaurant's senior operations manager, Scott Salvatierra, told the Chronicle that he has had to compensate customers who had to tap out from eating on the dock because they couldn't "stand the smell."

Salvatierra said he and his staff have scooped out about 150 pounds of dead fish in the last two days with a pool skimmer. Meanwhile, he said customers have decreased 60%, according to the Chronicle.

"We're known for our seafood dishes, so nobody wants to eat seafood dishes with the smell of rotten fish around them," Salvatierra said.

The Chronicle noted that the algae bloom was first reported in Alameda a little more than a month ago, and has spread throughout the San Francisco Bay.

Unhealthy water hasn't been limited to the Bay Area, however. Earlier this week, public health officials in Los Angeles County issued warnings for four area beaches due to the high bacterial levels in the water, the Los Angeles Times reported. Visitors to those beaches have been advised to avoid swimming and other activities.

  • China's imports of Malaysian crude oil have soared to nearly 800,000 barrels per day, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. 
  • That's more oil than what Malaysia actually produces on its own, suggesting some crude arrived from other sources.
  • The waters off Malaysia are known for ship-to-ship transfers that mix crude to hide its origin. 

Chinese imports of Malaysian crude oil jumped to 791,000 barrels per day in July, more than double the amount from the start of the year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

The problem? Last month's figure is actually more oil than what Malaysia actually produces on its own, suggesting some of the crude arrived from other sources before being shipped off to China. 

The waters off Malaysia are a notorious location for ship-to-ship transfers, where crude from various locations is mixed to hide its origin, then rebranded and sold elsewhere. 

The practice of  "dark" ship-to-ship transfers has become more common since Russia invaded Ukraine, as global market participants look to avoid the reputational risks of doing business with Moscow. Russian oil tankers have also disappeared from tracking systems near Portugal's Azores islands by turning off their location data.

Wary buyers have also attempted to avoid affiliation with the sanctioned nation through obfuscating the origins of crude and trading oil marked "destination unknown."

According to Bloomberg, the imports of Malaysian oil are likely a mix of barrels originating from Iran, Venezuela and Russia.

Meanwhile, fuel oil shipments from those three nations are using a key export hub in the UAE and being disguised for export, traders told the Wall Street Journal. 

Still, separate data show Russian crude exports to Asia reached a five-month low last week, declining by roughly 500,000 barrels per day.

Are you ready to journey to the Area 51 of evil? I sure as hell hope so, because here comes Death House! Featuring a cast that will be very familiar to horror aficionados and written by Gunnar Hansen, the man who played Leatherface, Death House is set in a secret prison full of murderous inmates. Let’s look at the cast of Death House, shall we? Dee Wallace (E.T., Cujo, The Howling), Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), Bill Moseley (House of a 1000 Corpses), Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes), Danny Trejo (Machete), Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog), Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator), Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead), Camille Keaton (I Spit on Your Grave), Tony Todd (Candyman) and more all appear here. That line-up is like a who’s-who of old school horror actors, and that alone might be enough to get people curious about this.

But then those curious people might watch this trailer and change their minds, quickly. To be blunt, this does not look great. But horror movie fans are a forgiving lot. More often than not, with horror fans, it’s the thought that counts, not the execution.

Now let’s look at the rather lengthy synopsis of Death House:

The Death House is the Area 51 of Evil… a subterranean government facility that holds humanity’s worst on nine levels. Hell, Dante’s ninth level, holds the Five Evils… the “dark stars” of Death House. These individuals are so heinous they can never walk among society again. They may also be supernatural.

Agents Toria Boon and Jae Novak have their own dark pasts, arriving at Death House to tour its levels and observe its denizens first-hand as well as the medical and mental experiments of Drs. Eileen Fletcher and Karen Redmane. Their depraved experiments date back to the Nazi doctors of WWII.

Prison cells are virtual reality holo decks that recreate prisoner environments before they were incarcerated. A special hallucinogenic gas keeps inmates under control. The victims are homeless, bused into Death House to play literal victims while killing habits are studied. The results are sick, but only a hint of what goes on here.

Hell literally breaks loose inside the facility when an EMP device detonates, killing all power and communication and… releasing every prisoner. Boon, Novak, and Fletcher are caught in a race against advancing prisoner hordes led by occultist Neo-Nazi Sieg. The monsters are freed, and they’re going down.

Boon and Novak’s fight through Death House turns into a house of horrors gauntlet; their only hope of escape is descending into Hell and enlisting the help of the Five Evils. Events culminate in a violent face-to-face standoff with absolute evil… only to find that they have traveled down a rabbit hole and through a looking glass. Black is white and white is black and the definitions of good and evil no longer apply.

Who are the monsters? Who will escape?

There’s a lot going on here! Monsters, Neo-Nazis, hallucinogenics! There’s enough packed into this synopsis to make any season of American Horror Story blush. Death House is being dubbed “The Expendables of the horror genre,” and to drive that point home, the official poster features a logo clearly borrowed from the Expendables logo.

High blood pressure occurs when the pressure of blood in the body is too high, putting extra strain on the blood vessels.

High blood pressure, otherwise known as hypertension, is dangerous as it can cause heart attacks and strokes.

According to the NHS, more than one in four adults in the UK have high blood pressure, many of whom don’t actually realise it.

This is because the condition rarely has noticeable symptoms.

However, in some cases, people with very high blood pressure could experience chest pain.

If symptoms of high blood pressure do occur, it is usually because patients are experiencing a ‘crisis’ due to their blood pressure reaching dangerously high levels.

Other symptoms which could occur in this situation include vision problems, tiredness, headaches, nausea and vomiting.

These symptoms will usually only occur in the case of malignant hypertension, otherwise known as a hypertensive crisis.

A hypertensive crisis is when blood pressure is extremely high.

Normal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg, according to the NHS.

High blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher.

Malignant hypertension is considered to be above 180/120mmHg and should be treated as a medical emergency as it can cause organ damage – usually to the kidneys or eyes.

Malignant hypertension develops rapidly and is often a result of high blood pressure not being controlled properly.

For example, if you are taking medication for high blood pressure but miss doses, you could be at risk of developing an hypertensive crisis.

In rare cases, malignant hypertension can cause swelling of the brain, which can lead to a dangerous condition called hypertensive encephalopathy.

Symptoms of this include: blindness, changes in mental status, coma, confusion, drowsiness, worsening headaches, nausea and vomiting, and seizures.

Aside from hypertensive crises, headaches and chest pain can also appear when people experience a sudden increase in high blood pressure, which is known as accelerated hypertension.

“Patients who experience early signs of hypertension usually complain about dull headaches, short moments of lightheadedness as well as unusually frequent nosebleeds,” said medical website Zava.

“It is quite rare for blood pressure to cause symptoms in the early stages of the condition.”

As high blood pressure in general rarely has symptoms, the NHS advises getting blood pressure checked regularly by a GP.
