In a world where your passport dictates where you can live, travel, and work, there's a semi-frozen haven open to citizens of all countries — no complicated visa or employment permits required.
Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago 500 miles from the North Pole, is home to the world's northernmost human settlement. The 2,300 residents of the capital, Longyearbyen, include people of over 40 different nationalities, few of whom are "from" Svalbard, per say.
That's because you're not allowed to give birth on Svalbard — one of the many strange rules that govern existence on the remote collection of islands covered by ice.
There are surprises of course, whom the town endearingly calls "Svalbard babies" even when they're grown, Cecilia Blomdahl, a popular content creator based in Longyearbyen, said in an interview with Insider.
Among Svalbard's other odd rules left over from its days as a coal mining town include a monthly alcohol limit (24 beers, half a bottle of fortified wine, and one bottle of liquor), and a ban on cats to protect the bird population.
But the most important rule of all: Don't run out of money. And certainly don't find yourself without a home.
Courtesy of Cecilia Blomdahl
While the Svalbard treaty of 1920 permits anyone to live and work on the archipelago indefinitely, its open borders come with an asterisk: You must have enough money to support yourself and a roof over your head, or risk expulsion from the territory.
"You can stay here for as long as you can take care of yourself," Blomdahl said. "That means how you get to work, how you live, your housing — nothing will be provided for you."
Despite being a sovereignty of Norway, Svalbard employees pay an 8% income tax and local businesses contribute zero taxes toward the country's national insurance program (the mainland's current tax rate is 14% and 22% respectively). As a result, there are no retirement homes, public transport, homeless shelters, unemployment benefits, or really any social safety net you can think of.
Nobody understands this trade off quite like Mark Sabbatini, the founder and editor of IcePeople, "the world's northernmost alternative newspaper," who was kicked off Svalbard in 2021 after living in Longyearbyen for over a decade.
He moved to the island from the US in 2008 with around $ 1 million dollars in the bank and ambitions to launch an English-language newspaper, Sabbatini told Insider.

While running IcePeople, two of Sabbatini's apartments were condemned due to environmental issues he said were exacerbated by the area's rapidly warming climate. The first was built on top of thawing permafrost, and the second was located in a newly determined avalanche zone.
"At that point, I didn't have a whole lot of money and it was a big scramble every month to scrounge up stuff," he said. "I was begging, borrowing — not stealing, but pretty close."
After squatting in a friend's cabin during the pandemic, Sabbatini succumbed to his last resort: sleeping at the campground where a guide was killed in a polar bear attack the year before. That's when the governor gave him the boot.
"I was horribly miserable, but it was absolutely the right decision," Sabbatini, who now works at a local paper in Alaska, recalled.
"It's a very fair system. Your taxes are incredibly low, but the trade off is you get no social support," he continued. "If you're not paying for that system, why should you benefit from it?"

Thanks to the local housing crisis, it's easier to find work on Svalbard than a place to live. Despite 2.5 months of complete darkness and below-freezing temperatures, the capital of Longyearbyen is a great place to be an entrepreneur, according to Martin Fiala, one of the co-founders of Café Huskies.
"If you have some idea, you're probably the only one who's doing it [in Svalbard]" he said. "I think if we set this up in a regular city where there's five other coffee places or shops on the same block, I don't think we'd be as successful."
But the area's remoteness also creates a separate set of challenges, Fiala explained, especially when it comes to shipping in goods from the mainland.
"If the coffee machine breaks, no one here can fix it and it would take weeks for us to get another one," he said, adding that "there's one guy in town who knows how to fix an industrial dishwasher."
"As soon as we save up some more money, we want to buy or rent another one and have it as a spare," he told Insider. "If there's ever a moon colony set up, I think we'd be perfect for it. It's really like a space station here."

Fiala and his co-founders all have second jobs, which made the launch of Café Huskies less of a financial risk. He studied architecture but currently works as a nature guide — one of many professionals in the local tourist economy with hidden passions.
"Here, in tourism, you have a lot of people working in reception, guiding, driving a truck," he told Insider. "But they're also an economist, a chemist, a photographer."
Why do people of so many different backgrounds and careers continue flocking to one of the world's most remote towns? One answer, according to Fiala, is that the extremity of life in Svalbard serves as a "catalyst" for both the best and worst qualities of humans.
"If you're depressed and you have a drinking problem and you come here, you'll probably just end up just drinking through the winter," he explained. "But if you're trying to finish the book, you're just going to do it. Life here gets dialed up."

A broken-down US Air Force CV-22 Osprey has been stuck in a remote Arctic nature preserve for over a month, but Norwegian soldiers are making tangible progress on getting it out.
The aircraft made a "controlled emergency landing" due to a clutch malfunction in Norway's Stongodden nature preserve on August 12, and the the special operations tilt-rotor aircraft has been stuck on the northern island of Senja ever since.
But Norway's military said on Tuesday that it's Armed Forces Salvage Battalion has managed to move the $ 90 million aircraft a little over 50 feet — an impressive feat given it weighs over 33,000 pounds.
To do this, Norwegian army engineers built a makeshift path by stacking wooden mats next to each other, making an improvised road running from where the Osprey is stranded down to the shore. Closer to the water, engineers are working to build up the path by pouring gravel on top of the rocks.
Once soldiers move the Osprey — which had its fuel drained so that it's lighter and easier to transport — down to the shore, the plan is to use a crane boat to lift the aircraft and bring it to a NATO port in Norway for maintenance.
The entire operation is being done in communication with the US Air Force and local environmental officials to ensure that as little harm as possible comes to the protected plants and animals in the preserve, Norway's military said.
Hoisting the Osprey onto the crane boat was supposed to happen earlier this week, according to the Norwegian military, but bad weather in the western part of the country has delayed operations. The military hopes to complete this step by Sunday though.
"The preparations are going as they should," Norway's military said on Tuesday.
The following military photos show how Norwegian soldiers have managed to move the aircraft closer to the water.

The clutch malfunction that grounded the aircraft is one of a handful of mechanical failures that led US Air Force Special Operations Command's to temporarily ground its Ospreys last month.
"These things never seem to happen at airfields," Lt. Gen. Jim Slife, head of Air Force Special Operations Command, said at an Air & Space Forces Association event earlier in September. "They always seem to happen in Norwegian nature preserves above the Arctic Circle at the onset of winter."
Slife added that the situation has "provided a really great tactical problem for that unit," referring to the military personnel working to recover the Osprey and "figure out what to do with that airplane out in the middle of a nature preserve with protected ferns and salamanders and things like that."

Independent Russian gas producer Novatek has announced the first delivery of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Yamal project in the Arctic to an area near the port of Honningsvag in northern Norway.
“The Arc7 ice-class LNG tanker ‘Vladimir Rusanov’ successfully reloaded an LNG cargo delivered from the Yamal LNG facility at Sabetta to the lower ice-class designated tanker ‘Pskov’, which will deliver the reloaded cargo to customers in North-West Europe,” Novatek said.
“The first ship-to-ship LNG transshipment is a very important commercial milestone for us,” said Novatek’s Deputy Board Chairman Lev Feodosyev. He explained that it allows for the optimization of transport costs “by decreasing the travel distance of the Arc7 ice-class tankers and to ensure timely offloading of LNG from Yamal LNG project.”

Novatek earlier announced future large-scale LNG transshipment projects in Kamchatka and the Murmansk regions.
The $ 27 billion Yamal LNG project began operations last December and has already shipped two million tons of the liquefied fuel. The LNG plant is expected to have three trains with an annual capacity of 16.5 million tons per year when fully operational.

Currently, Novatek ships LNG from two trains with a total capacity of about 11 million tons per annum. The launch of the third stage with a capacity of 5.5 million tons per year is planned for the beginning of 2019.
In September, Novatek announced plans for one additional line able to produce a million tons of LNG per year. Besides Novatek, Yamal LNG’s shareholders also include France’s Total, China’s CNPC and the Silk Road Fund.

Sophie Kelk
November 16, 2018
For six weeks, Sophie Kelk lived on a remote Norwegian island north of the Arctic Circle. This is what she discovered about island life—the good, the bad, and above all, the community spirit.
As my flight begins its descent into Bodø, I catch a glimpse of the coastline. The jagged, teeth-like mountains drop vertically and abruptly—almost rudely—into the ocean, crowned with a shimmering glacier while out to sea is Fleinvær, a collection of grassy low-lying islands, scattered along the shore as if discarded by a petulant child. This archipelago of over 360 islands, an hour off the mainland, is to be my home for the next six weeks.
Soon, I am on a public boat, speeding over the deep blue waters and out to Sørvær, one of the archipelago’s only inhabited islands. The boat service runs almost daily, but I’ll need to call ahead of time if I want it to pick me up, and I’ll rely on it to deliver my food and any necessities during my time here. There are no shops or cafés. I quickly discover that planning is of the essence, and the boat is my lifeline to the mainland.
I am here, along with my boyfriend, to take over as caretaker for The Arctic Hideaway, a series of cabins which bill themselves as a creative retreat where simplicity is luxury. Our job? Keep the place running and welcome guests. Our goal? Find a bit of peace.
The passion-project of local musician and composer Håvard Lund, the nine architecturally-designed buildings of The Arctic Hideaway—all straight lines, timber and glass—are designed to ‘force’ guests to engage with nature.
With such a spectacular backdrop, it’s hard not to. One evening, the vibrant purples and oranges of the midnight sun jolt me awake, driving me out of our cabin for a 2am walk. On still, sunny days, the navy-blue water is like a sheet of glass, while steely gray rains bring menacing sets of waves.

With no light pollution, clear nights offer up a canopy of stars and the Milky Way and I lie on my back in child-like glee, recalling long-forgotten constellations. As the days begin to shorten, we are treated to our own private light show as the northern lights dance their way across the skies.
Even medical services are dwindling, and although theoretically there is access to both an ambulance and helicopter, budget cuts and centralization mean they’re rarely sent. A few days before we arrived, a little girl suffered third-degree burns and had to be taken to the mainland by a family member in their fishing trawler. Another local told me how she called with asthma and bronchitis, struggling to breathe. “They told me to call back when I’d stopped breathing”.
In spite, or perhaps because of this harsh life, there’s a strong sense of community on Sørvær. We’re welcomed with open arms and as the days go by, a quick walk to the end of the island, usually a 15-minute affair, could take a whole day, as we find ourselves invited in to taste a cake, offered some freshly-picked carrots or potatoes, an update on their latest building work on simply a coffee and a chat.
Seafood here is in abundance, and fishing is part of daily life. Locals know exactly where to catch each type of fish, be it pollock, mackerel, cod, halibut or ocean perch; triangulating off landmarks to a precise spot in the water, and coming back minutes later with a full bucket. We catch crabs and free-dive for scallops straight off our dock. I have never eaten fish so fresh, and likely never will again.

Because of this abundance, industrial fishing poses a threat to Fleinvær. There are plans to blow a huge hole through the middle of a neighboring island to install a land-based fishery. This aquaculture has been incentivized by the Norwegian government, but the locals have concerns about the waste created by such farming, the effect on the nesting birds and wildlife, the fish stock, and the increased marine traffic it will create.
Meanwhile, two brothers, Magne and Odd, both professional fishermen, have set up a working group to have their archipelago recognized as a National Park; a way to protect the area from all future proposals. They will fight tooth and nail to defend their precious way of life and protect the wildlife they believe also has a right to remain here.
The ozone layer that shields life from cancer-causing solar rays is recovering at a rate of one to three per cent per decade, reversing years of dangerous depletion caused by the release of harmful chemicals, a UN study said on Monday.

Lead poisoning may have made life difficult for the doomed men of John Franklin’s 1845 expedition, which got lost in the Arctic while in search of the Northwest Passage linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. But it probably didn’t contribute much to their inevitable fates. That’s the conclusion of a new study of lead concentrations in the hair of one of the men who died while the expedition was stranded on King William Island between late 1846 and early 1848.
Captain Sir John Franklin’s expedition wasn’t the first to sail north in search of a passage linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and it wasn’t the last. But its disappearance left behind a compelling mystery, one kept in the public consciousness for years by the tireless efforts of Franklin’s widow. For years in the late 19th century, the search for the lost sailing ships HMS Terror and HMS Erebus nearly rivaled the search for the Northwest Passage itself.
Thanks to a note found in 1869 on King William Island, we know that all was well on the wooden ships in May of 1847, aside from being stuck in the ice. But by April of 1848, 24 men had died, including Franklin and the expedition’s assistant surgeon, naturalist Harry Goodsir. The remaining 105 had abandoned their trapped ships and set off across the ice to try to reach Back River on the Canadian mainland. Neither ship would be seen again for over 150 years. A century and a half later, historians are still debating exactly what went wrong.

The Russian Navy has test-fired a supersonic Onyx anti-ship cruise missile for the first time. It was launched from the Bastion missile-defense system, which was recently deployed to the Russian Arctic.
A video of the launch shows one P-800 Onyx missile, which can travel at speeds of up to 1,980mph, shooting up in the air and then gliding above the sea towards a mock target designed to simulate a group of hostile ships.
The Bastion launcher can carry two Onyx anti-ship missiles, which can engage targets at a range up to 300km with a high-low trajectory, or 120km with a low-low flight trajectory. Although designed to be deployed against ships, it can be used against ground targets as well.
The first three Bastion mobile coastal defense complexes were received by the Russian military in 2010 and have since been used in combat in Syria.
In November 2016, Russia used the launchers to fire several missiles at the positions of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists in Idlib and Homs Provinces.
The long-range system has also been in service with the Russian Black Sea Fleet and the Northern Fleet.
