In the months leading up to the US midterm elections, the big online sites that inadvertently hosted the worst manipulation back in 2016, like Facebook and Twitter, have adopted new advertising policies to enforce transparency. So has Google, which has followed Facebook in preparing another resource for the public: An archive of ads. Today, the company published a database of all the US political advertisements that have appeared on its platforms.

Called the Ad Library, it serves as a living archive with lots of search functions, which range from the general (by state, ad spend, impression volume) to the specific (top advertiser, top keyword, etc). Per the site’s FAQ, the database will be updated every Tuesday to include more advertisements; Its timeline, however, doesn’t track before May 31st, 2018, so campaigns spanning before then will list that as their start date. Like Facebook’s archive, it will only contain US ads.

But as TechCrunch points out, the archive only includes ads featuring candidates or current holders of federal office — not issue ads. Those are the non-candidate messages designed to shape public opinion about specific topics, which Facebook includes in its archive (Twitter said it will have a more specific policy about them in the future).

Miiverse archive recovers 17TB of social mirth after Nintendo’s shutdown https://briefnews.eu/miiverse-archive-recovers-17tb-of-social-mirth-after-nintendos-shutdown/ https://briefnews.eu/miiverse-archive-recovers-17tb-of-social-mirth-after-nintendos-shutdown/#respond Thu, 04 Jan 2018 18:17:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/miiverse-archive-recovers-17tb-of-social-mirth-after-nintendos-shutdown/

Enlarge / An extremely small look at the hundreds of millions of Miiverse posts archived on Archiverse (credit: Archiverse)

Nintendo’s first attempt at creating a real online social network, Miiverse, became a surprisingly robust and meme-filled community of artists and fans in the years after it launched on the Wii U and 3DS. Then, last November, Nintendo unceremoniously shut it down and removed the archives from the Internet, nothing, among other things, that “many users are shifting to social networking services.”

This week, thanks to the efforts of Archive Team and the Internet Archive, you can search through a nearly 17 terabyte backup of hundreds of millions of posts, screenshots, and drawings from the over 8 million users that made Miiverse such a weird and special place.

Archiverse‘s sheer size makes it a bit hard to get a handle on, but there are still some gems to be found with some quick searching. The posts with the most approving “yeahs” in the Super Mario Maker community, for instance, serve as a quick-and-handy list of good levels to try out. The YouTube community is a great place to search for the kind of black-and-white dot art that helped drive the Miiverse community, including the work of the very popular MemeSenpai. Or, if you’re in the mood for some quality “shitposting,” the Funky Barn and New Super Luigi U community archives have you covered.

Nintendo’s Miiverse lives on in a giant internet archive https://briefnews.eu/nintendos-miiverse-lives-on-in-a-giant-internet-archive/ https://briefnews.eu/nintendos-miiverse-lives-on-in-a-giant-internet-archive/#respond Thu, 04 Jan 2018 03:38:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nintendos-miiverse-lives-on-in-a-giant-internet-archive/

Nintendo’s Miiverse is dead. However, that doesn’t mean that all your message board posts have disappeared into the ether. Drastic Actions and the Archive Team have launched Archiverse, an unofficial but very thorough collection of Miiverse posts. There are roughly 133 million posts, 217 million replies, 76 million screenshots and 72 million drawings — all told, just shy of 17TB of data. It even includes developer-specific communities and the E3 communities that Nintendo delisted.

It sounds daunting, but there are ways to find exactly what you’re looking for. You can search by game title or user, and you can filter posts by their content (such as drawings) or the number of “yeahs.”

Are you going to spend a long time browsing? Probably not. The most obvious use case involves digging up your old posts for nostalgia’s sake, rather than trying to track down references to a specific game. However, this isn’t so much about regular use as it is preserving an important part of gaming history. Miiverse became a significant part of gaming culture for Wii U and 3DS owners after its late 2012 launch, and the Archiverse makes sure that culture won’t disappear forever.

Instagram can now automatically archive your Stories https://briefnews.eu/instagram-can-now-automatically-archive-your-stories/ https://briefnews.eu/instagram-can-now-automatically-archive-your-stories/#respond Tue, 05 Dec 2017 15:46:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/instagram-can-now-automatically-archive-your-stories/

Last week, The Next Web reported on a bunch of new features Instagram was reportedly testing out and today, the platform is giving users two new ways to manage Stories. The first is the rumored Story archive. Now, Instagram will automatically save your Stories after their 24 hours are up and they’ll exist in a separate archive section of your profile. You’ll be able to rewatch Stories, add them to posts or add them to a new Story. And if you decide you don’t want those Stories sticking around, you can turn off auto-archiving whenever you want.

Your archived Stories can also be used in the second new addition to Instagram. Underneath the bio in your profile, there will now be a section called Stories Highlights. They’re collections of previously shared Stories that will stay posted to your profile for as long as you want them there and you can have as many of them as you want. To make one, tap the “New” circle underneath your bio and select any stories you want to add from your new archive. You’ll then pick a cover image and name the Highlight and then it’s there for any of your followers to see at any time. To edit or delete them, just tap and hold.

Both features are rolling out now.

Neil Young’s huge online music archive opens to the public https://briefnews.eu/neil-youngs-huge-online-music-archive-opens-to-the-public/ https://briefnews.eu/neil-youngs-huge-online-music-archive-opens-to-the-public/#respond Sun, 03 Dec 2017 18:43:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/neil-youngs-huge-online-music-archive-opens-to-the-public/

Neil Young has been talking up his giant online archive for ages, but he’s finally ready to deliver on his promises. The veteran Canadian rocker has launched the simply-titled Neil Young Archives, a website that includes all the media he has produced to date. And we do mean everything — every song Young has made is available to stream for free (until June 30th 2018) through his Xstream Music service, including unreleased tracks.

Young naturally makes a big deal out of the audio quality, which improves the stronger your connection gets. He even devotes his introductory message to a long diatribe about Apple’s music quality choices on top of explaining how the archive works. Young would prefer that you listen on a computer, and even has a guide to help set up access on your home stereo.

Overkill? You bet. And ultimately, it’s serving as a sales pitch for Xstream. However, it’s still miles above the typical musician page offering the occasional freebie and a few music videos. This is an insight into Young’s entire history as an artist, not just a promotion for his latest album.

Pentagon contractor leaves social media spy archive wide open on Amazon https://briefnews.eu/pentagon-contractor-leaves-social-media-spy-archive-wide-open-on-amazon/ https://briefnews.eu/pentagon-contractor-leaves-social-media-spy-archive-wide-open-on-amazon/#respond Sat, 18 Nov 2017 15:34:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pentagon-contractor-leaves-social-media-spy-archive-wide-open-on-amazon/

A Pentagon contractor left a vast archive of social-media posts on a publicly accessible Amazon account in what appears to be a military-sponsored intelligence-gathering operation that targeted people in the US and other parts of the world.

The three cloud-based storage buckets contained at least 1.8 billion scraped online posts spanning eight years, researchers from security firm UpGuard’s Cyber Risk Team said in a blog post published Friday. The cache included many posts that appeared to be benign, and in many cases those involved from people in the US, a finding that raises privacy and civil-liberties questions. Facebook was one of the sites that originally hosted the scraped content. Other venues included soccer discussion groups and video game forums. Topics in the scraped content were extremely wide ranging and included Arabic language posts mocking ISIS and Pashto language comments made on the official Facebook page of Pakistani politician Imran Khan.

The scrapings were left in three Amazon Web Servers S3 cloud storage buckets that were configured to allow access to anyone with a freely available AWS account. It’s only the latest trove of sensitive documents left unsecured on Amazon. In recent months, UpGuard has also found private data belonging to Viacom, security firm TigerSwan, and defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton similarly exposed. In Friday’s post, UpGuard analyst Dan O’Sullivan wrote:

Neil Young prepares a giant online archive for his music https://briefnews.eu/neil-young-prepares-a-giant-online-archive-for-his-music/ https://briefnews.eu/neil-young-prepares-a-giant-online-archive-for-his-music/#respond Sat, 05 Aug 2017 23:40:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/neil-young-prepares-a-giant-online-archive-for-his-music/

Neil Young has come a long, long way since he dismissed streaming music services. The singer-songwriter has unveiled plans for a huge online archive of his work that, naturally, will tie into his streaming music service (Xstream Music). The focus is on a timeline that highlights his music from 1963 onward, complete with playback and a “Filing Cabinet” that offers video, memorabilia and other content attached to each song. Think of it as an album box set with very, very extensive liner notes.

It’ll even indulge the audiophiles Young has courted for years. The archive will guide users when they’re shopping for and setting up their streaming music equipment. Yes, Young is determined to help you experience “Piece of Crap” the way it was intended.

The artist doesn’t say when you can expect the archive to launch. However, this might raise the bar for musicians’ official pages when it does arrive. Many artists’ pages tend to focus on promoting the album du jour, or else give you a top-level overview of their legacies. Here, Young is filling in at least some of the context normally supplied by fan sites and Wikipedia editors. It probably won’t have the full story, but it could give you a reason to visit a musician’s page beyond shopping for official merch.

WikiLeaks publishes searchable archive of Emmanuel Macron’s campaign emails https://briefnews.eu/wikileaks-publishes-searchable-archive-of-emmanuel-macrons-campaign-emails/ https://briefnews.eu/wikileaks-publishes-searchable-archive-of-emmanuel-macrons-campaign-emails/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 19:47:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wikileaks-publishes-searchable-archive-of-emmanuel-macrons-campaign-emails/ French President Emmanuel Macron attends a press conference at the Elysee Palace in Paris, France, June 12, 2017. REUTERS/Philippe WojazerThomson Reuters

PARIS (Reuters) – WikiLeaks said on Monday it had published a searchable archive of more than 21,000 verified emails associated with key figures in the election campaign of President Emmanuel Macron.

The stolen data was originally dumped on the internet in May, on the eve of the French presidential run-off between Macron and far-right opponent Marine Le Pen, in an apparent attempt to undermine voters’ confidence.

Within hours of the leak, Macron’s staff alleged it had been targeted by a “massive and coordinated” hacking operation.

The document dump came too late in the campaign to have any direct influence on the election, in part because the country’s electoral commission warned it was a crime to republish any details from the emails before the balloting.

French newspapers who have poured over the documents since then said they had found nothing scandalous to report. By turning the dump into a database, WikiLeaks has made the documents easily searchable for anyone with a web browser.

The cyber attack drew comparisons with the 2016 U.S. election campaign, during which U.S. intelligence agencies alleged Russia had interfered to benefit President Donald Trump. Russia denies meddling in the U.S. election.

Macron’s team also blamed Russian interests in part for earlier attempts to interfere with their campaign. The Kremlin has denied it was behind any such attacks.

At the time, WikiLeaks did not publish the Macron documents themselves, but said they were doing so now after attempting to verify the authenticity of the email addresses.

WikiLeaks did not say how the emails were obtained. In its statement, it sought to cast doubt on the theory that Russia was behind the attack, citing a comment by a French government cyber security official that the document dump appeared to be the work of an “isolated individual”.

WikiLeaks said it found 21,075 verified emails in an archive of 71,848 emails, along with 26,506 attached documents, which it also published. They spanned the eight years between March 2009 and April 2017, the month of the first round of the French election.

Macron was an investment banker in 2009. He had never held elected office before winning the presidency. He announced his bid to become president in November 2016.

Macron’s office declined to comment.

French law enforcement and intelligence officials have not publicly accused anyone of the campaign attacks.

Emulate the Golden Age of the Macintosh Thanks to the Internet Archive https://briefnews.eu/emulate-the-golden-age-of-the-macintosh-thanks-to-the-internet-archive/ https://briefnews.eu/emulate-the-golden-age-of-the-macintosh-thanks-to-the-internet-archive/#respond Sun, 16 Apr 2017 20:22:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emulate-the-golden-age-of-the-macintosh-thanks-to-the-internet-archive/

Along with its duties of maintaining copies of important news, literature, scientific information, and old MySpace pages, the Internet Archive also loves to create emulations for you to fiddle with inside your browser. Today, the lovable non-profit organization has made it easy for you to relive the glory years of the early Macintosh like it’s 1985 all over again.

There’s something about the black and white interface of the original Macintosh computers that’s timeless. Sure, it might remind people of the Reagan-era but it is such a pleasing design that one could easily imagine it being a minimalist OS mod for people who want to simplify their user experience. Diving into the Internet Archive’s new collection of early Mac emulators gives the user a chance to see what it would be like to use that old OS with modern hardware.

Start here in order to browse a Mac running MacOS MacOS 7.0.1 that has a selection of software already “installed.” Published in 1991, it’s not the oldest emulation that’s on offer but it’s probably the best for feeling like your using a full computer setup. Once you’ve heard the hard beep that indicates startup, take a dive into the world of MacPaint and say a little prayer to the Adobe gods for all their gifts. Fire up old school Microsoft Word and finally write that cyberpunk fan-fic that you’ve been putting off.

Once you’ve perused the utilities and emptied the trash can, it’s time for some games. A full list of playable software is available here and classics like Space Invaders and Lode Runner are available alongside lesser-known games like Crystal Quest and Mac Missiles. I’ve never played Social Climber before today, it’s a lot of fun.

They’ve also included an archive of old books about Macs and the complete run of Macworld magazine. It’s more than an afternoon’s worth of stuff to make you forget the age of neverending email.

The Royal House Of Windsor SHOCKS with rare archive footage of Queen Elizabeth https://briefnews.eu/the-royal-house-of-windsor-shocks-with-rare-archive-footage-of-queen-elizabeth/ https://briefnews.eu/the-royal-house-of-windsor-shocks-with-rare-archive-footage-of-queen-elizabeth/#respond Wed, 01 Mar 2017 23:32:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-royal-house-of-windsor-shocks-with-rare-archive-footage-of-queen-elizabeth/

The clip showed her majesty in 1947 playfully running around a ship in a game with officers.

Exploring Britain’s crippling post-war austerity and the worst winter on record, a lovesick Princess Elizabeth and her ailing father, George VI, visited South Africa on a fraught royal tour.

The 1947 BBC announcer could be heard to say: “Fine weather continuing to grace the voyage, everyone made the most of it. The princesses for example are here seen enjoying deck games in company of a number of mid-shipman. And when I say enjoying, I mean just that. Well, you can see for yourselves.”

The Channel 4 commentator announced: “In a deliberate PR move, the Windsor’s had decided to allow a newsreel cameraman to follow their journey. The images were designed to convey a close-knit Royal family.”

Historians were on hand to reveal just why the Royal family had agreed to allow cameras, with one revealing: “This is all about family values. Being seen with your family is in many ways just the best thing to be doing.”

Another added: “You see the princesses playing around with the young officers in a way we almost never actually see. Elizabeth, she’s almost playing like a child.

“The princesses were the only young women among a crew of nearly 1,700 men. In a letter to her nanny, Elizabeth revealed her excitement.”

Viewers took to social media with excitement at the footage, with one tweeting: “The Royal House of Windsor on @Channel4 is fascinating #HouseofWindsor.”

“Whoever put Benidorm on at the same time as the Royal House of Windsor is wicked. Wicked #tellydilemma,” posted another fan torn between the two clashing shows.

A third wrote: “Was lovely to see the Queen looking cheerful on that ship.”

Next week’s continuation will reveal how Prince Philip was the Windsors’ most radical moderniser.

The eye-opening programme will also explore how the Prince harnessed the medium of television to revamp the royals’ public image in the 1960s.

The Royal House of Windsor continues next Wednesday on at 9pm.
