In the four-plus years we’ve been doing our Tuesday round-up of what to buy and rent, we’ve rarely had a week as jam-packed as this one – which includes everything from this year’s Oscar favorites to a superhero smash to a classic Spaghetti Western, and everything imaginable in between. Let’s get to work:
ON AMAZON PRIME
Cold War: Pawel Pawlikowski nabbed a surprise Best Director nomination with this compact, visually austere, yet emotionally scorching picture. He tells the devastating story of a teacher and student who meet in early ‘50s Poland, fall into some version of love (or at least lust), and spend the next several years basically ruining themselves for each other. It’s a wise movie – one that understands how absence can idealize a romance, and how it can curdle when that absence is resolved – and nimble too, covering a lot of story, over a long period, with a light touch (and in a tight 88 minutes to boot). Also, keep an eye on female lead Joanna Kulig, a next-level talent whose aging is stunning, whose nuance is astonishing, and whose “Rock Around the Clock” dance has more joy and freedom than any ten performances last year.
ON HULU / BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD
If Beale Street Could Talk: Beale Street is in New Orleans and Barry Jenkins’ latest is set in Harlem, but that doesn’t matter much; the opening quote from James Baldwin, who wrote the novel it’s taken from, explains that Beale Street is less of a place than an idea, a location for the lives and loves of black people in every city. The film — which perfectly fuses the voices of its two creators — concerns a young couple in love, and the trials they face. Jenkins’ images soar in time with the swells of the score, and the actors gaze into his camera with an emotional immediacy that’s downright transportive. Every performance lands, but special praise is due to the Oscar-winning work of Regina King; every moment, every gesture, is imbued with immeasurable love and wisdom. As is the movie itself. (Also streaming on Hulu.) (Includes audio commentary, deleted scenes, and featurette.)
ON 4K / BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD
Aquaman: Director James Wan follows Patty Jenkins’s lead and wisely (mostly) jettisons the drab, why-so-serious aesthetic of the so-called “DC Extended Universe” and embraces the elemental goofiness of his subject. But it’s not all winks; his action scenes have a hearty, kinetic energy and welcome sense of slapstick, the imagery is visually gobsmacking (especially in 4K), and the undersea setting of the de rigeur DC fire-and-explosion climax is at least lets in some color and flair. And Jason Momoa is first-rate – it might take a guy this tough to make a character this silly seem cool. Ultimately, Aquamanis pure candy: neither healthy nor filling, but undeniably tasty. (Includes featurettes.)

Columbus: There’s a tiny, great moment early in this low-key character drama from writer/director Kogonada that tells you everything about his storytelling style. Our heroine, Cassie (the wonderful Haley Lu Richardson) is trying to start her car, and it’s a process, requiring several tries and a bit of prayer. She finally does — and then she spots Jin (John Cho, very good), a fascinating young traveller she met the day before, and she immediately shuts off the car to chase him down. It’s a scene that tells us everything we need to know about her interest in him, but does so entirely in action and silence, a guiding principle that runs throughout this very special film; it begins as two seemingly disconnected stories, bound by a feeling of aimlessness, which then intersect and bounce around each other. And as they do, Kogonada carefully chooses what to leave out and what to keep in, remembering that there are moments when we know what happens next, and don’t have to be told.

Jane Fonda in Five Acts: If anyone’s earned the epic HBO documentary treatment, it’s Ms. Fonda, an extraordinary actor and controversial figure whose in-the-public-eye evolution — from ingénue to activist to cause célèbre to icon — is as rich and fascinating as Bob Dylan’s or Elizabeth Taylor’s. This two-plus hour portrait from director Susan Lacy finds just the right pace and tone for this busy life, refusing to either judge or succumb to hagiography, treating each phase of her life as equally important and equally compelling. And Fonda’s commentary throughout is reflective, thoughtful, and often wryly funny.
ON BLU-RAY
Road to Singapore/ Road to Zanzibar/ Road to Morocco/ Road to Utopia: A couple of summers back, KL Studio Classics gave the proper Blu-ray treatment to Road to Rio and Road to Bali, two later installments in the Bob Hope / Bing Crosby / Dorothy Lamour “Road” series that fell into the wasteland of public domain. This week, they go one better, with Blu-ray debuts for the first four films in the series, allowing the viewer to see how the first-rate franchise found its groove of adventure movie spoofs, vaudeville-style two-acts, personality-driven comedy, and winking inside jokes (their fourth-wall breaks, mocking the movies they’re in and the studio they’re making them for, still feel subversive). Road to Utopia is probably the best of the bunch – it’s got the best one-liners – but the tuneful and uproariously funny Road to Morocco theme song is not to be sneezed at. (Includes featurettes and trailers for all titles, and audio commentaries for Moroccoand Utopia.)
For A Few Dollars More: A Fistful of Dollars gets love as the groundbreaker, and The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly as the epic, but this viewer has always had a soft spot for the middle picture in Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood’s “Man with No Name” trilogy, which finds the filmmaker and the actor stretching their legs a bit and really starting to explore the kind of places a Spaghetti Western could go. It’s dark and grimy, yet wickedly entertaining (and not without its fair share of deadpan humor); the action sequences maintain their considerable kick, and KL’s new 4K restoration is a damn knockout. (Includes audio commentaries, featurettes, interviews, trailers, and original American release version.)
I Wanna Hold Your Hand: Robert Zemeckis’s first directorial effort gets the Criterion treatment, and it’s a gem; like much of his early work, it’s wild and unruly, a spinning top perpetually on that final wobble, yet never quite slowing down or peeling out. He follows a handful of Beatlemaniacs dead set on meeting the Fab Four during their first trip to New York to perform on Ed Sullivan, s it’s something akin to a caper movie; there are various plans for dodging cops, bribing security, sneaking into service elevators, and hiding under beds. Zemeckis is careful to infuse all of these events with the energy and spirit of the Beatles’ own film from the period, A Hard Day’s Night; in the big crowd scenes of rampant Beatlemania, he even apes some of the compositions and cutting of that film’s similar sequences. It’s a smart move. Only steal from the best. (Includes audio commentary, new interviews, early Zemeckis short films, trailers, and radio spots.)
Japón: Also joining the Criterion Collection this week is Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas’s freewheeling 2002 journey film, the mellow yet chatty story of an urban painter who retreats to the country’s valleys and villages on a mission to kill himself – and stops short. The 16mm cinemascope cinematography is an unexpectedly effective mixture of gorgeous and modest, and the peculiar curlicues of the narrative are undeniably, sometimes uncomfortably personal. This is an earthy and singular piece of work. (Includes interviews, video diary, short film, deleted scene, and trailer.)

The superhero star played Jason Ioane for three years on Baywatch Hawaii, between 1999 and 2001; reprising the part for the TV film Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding in 2003. It sparked a career that took him to Game of Thrones, Stargate Atlantis and Frontier before he landed the role of Arthur Curry – aka Aquaman in the DC universe. His solo movie as the character has made more than $ 1.1 billion.
In an interview in 2017, the actor – who looks unrecognisable in the photos – spoke about how the Baywatch role actually held him back.
He told the Sunday Times: “I was 19 and running around with no clothes on and saving people.
“But it gave me my passion for acting.
“It led to getting no respect for about four years and I couldn’t get an agent to save my life.”
Now, it is widely expected that he’ll return as Aquaman in a new sequel.
“You know, I could spit a bunch of different ideas, but the truth of it is, it’s going to come down to James [Wan] and Warner and everyone,” he told ScreenRant.
“He’s king now. To roll up to the Justice League, and his perspective now is just like, ‘I’ve got a trident you can’t take off of me now, and it’s got some power.’
“But… he can definitely mess up some stuff. The old trident didn’t work as well. You know? He could mess up Steppenwolf a little easier now.”
Baywatch, which made household names out of David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, premiered in 1989 but was cancelled after one season.
Hasselhoff worked to bring it back, when it became a smash hit.
Baywatch: Hawaii launched in season ten, and shot two seasons there. The show ended in 2001.
Aquaman is still playing in certain cinemas.
Aquaman isn’t just ruling the waves, he is the current king of the worldwide box office. The latest DC movie has passed $ 640million and some are predicting it could be the first Warner Bros DC Extended Universe release to pass one billion. No wonder confident talk is already focussed on the inevitable sequel. The single end credit scene clearly sets up a major storyline for the future. Eagle-eyed fans spotted a clever Justice League Ester Egg which director James Wan has already acknowledged.
Leading man Jason Momoa has said he is keen for a Justice League crossover and vocally denounced reports that Henry Cavill is stepping down as Superman.
However, when asked who he would like Aquaman to team up with next, he picked two other members of the Justice League – Wonder Woman and Flash.
Now a new screengrab from the movie has spotted a cheeky reference to the Aquaman Wonder Woman Flashpoint storyline.
Is this really on the cards? Mera will not be happy.
The cheeky newspaper clipping is seen on the wall in Doctor Shin’s makeshift lab.
Arthur Curry and Diana Prince have a relationship in the alternate Flashpoint universe. Furthermore, the only official reports about the solo Flash movie, including comments by Ezra Miller, have spoken of the Flashpoint storyline.
Is this clipping just a cheeky fan Easter Egg from director James Wan, or a sneaky clue about what could be coming next?
Momoa has also revealed he already pitched the opening scene of Aquaman 2 to Warner Bros executives.
The end credit scene appears to be setting up the return of Black Manta, aided by Shin, as the main antagonist, but much could change in the next few years.
The exact shape of the future DCEU is unclear, with persistent reports that Cavill and Ben Affleck’s Batman will exit.
The Flash movie remain far off, with no preproduction dates in place. Following Wonder Woman 2 and Shazam! next year, anything is possible.
However, an Aquaman Wonder Woman romance remains unlikely and this Easter Egg seems certain to be simply an in-joke piece of fun.
AQUAMAN IS OUT NOW.
The DC blockbuster already clocks in at over 2 hours and 20 minutes, so it’s understandable that James Wan wanted to make trims wherever he could. And it seems there’s one sequence in particular that didn’t make the cut, but would have provided some more interesting insight to Arthur’s backstory.
Speaking to Comic Book, Wan revealed that a scene was filmed in which we saw Arthur first realising he could breathe underwater.
It’s quite a key element of Aquaman’s very character, but it seems the time constraints kept it out of the final edit.
“I know it sounds very important,” he added, “but it being a flashback scene, I really felt like I had too many flashbacks as it were, and that I didn’t want to cram another one in there.”
The site adds, however, that Wan hopes to add the deleted moment to the DVD and Blu-ray release next year.
Aquaman has won the US box office but with a slightly lower box office haul than its DC predecessors.
Its unfortunate for a studio desperately in need of some good PR, but at least word-of-mouth should stop Aquaman from sinking as quickly as, say, Justice League.
That movie bowed to $ 93.8 million compared to Aquaman’s $ 67.4 million, but reviews for the ensemble offering were dire, whereas the sheer lunacy of Aquaman seems to have endeared it to fans.
And in any case, the caper has performed exceptionally well internationally. It’s Warner Bros’ most successful movie ever in China already.
Another moment that ended up being deleted – although in this case it wasn’t even filmed – was a very gory one indeed.
“[Will Beall, writer] had a really quirky out-there [sequence],” Wan said, according to Dark Horizons.
“It wasn’t the studio, it was me that said, ‘I don’t know if we can have that in there, that’s a bit weird.’ As much as I loved it.
“He had this sequence where… Aquaman has been apprehended by King Orm and he’s been thrown into this dungeon. Like this really awful prison deep in Atlantis.
“He ends up starting a prison riot, where all the guards are sharks.”
He added: “They were shark-guards, like all shark head… and he kills one of the shark guards and the shark starts bleeding and then that starts a feeding frenzy among all the other shark guards.
“It just went nuts. We’re talking like clouds of blood billowing everywhere and he uses that to escape.
“I was like ‘Holy c**p, I don’t know if I can do that.’”
Aquaman is out now.

The hillbilly king of Atlantis has finally splashed onto US cinema screens. After making massive waves around the world American audiences can finally see what all the fuss is about. Jason Momoa’s first solo outing has already been a spectacular success at the global box office, banking over $ 332million before it even opens in many major territories, including its home turf. A sequel seems inevitable and the mid credit scene sets its all up.
WARNING SPOILERS FROM HERE ON:
Earlier this year, director James Wan stressed he wanted to make a film which stood apart from the main Justice League narrative and concerns. The end of last year’s Justice League film showed Bruce Wayne revealing the table and room where it was envisaged the team (and prospective new members) would meet. Does the Aquaman film move this forward in any way?
The simple answer is that no members of the League appear in the movie, either on screen or even mentioned in discussions. However, we know the film is set after the events of Justice League because Amber Heard’s Mera defends Aquaman at one point by reminding his detractors that he saved Atlantis from Steppenwolf.
This is the only link or reference to the wider DCEU throughout the entire movie.
So what is the end credit scene all about?
It certainly points towards what comes next and is used primarily to set up potential storylines for the sequel.
The scene shows the villainous Black Manta rescued from the sea by the fanatic Dr Stephen Shin, who is obsessed with finding Atlantis. He recognises Black Manta’s suit as being from the technologically advanced underwater kingdom.
Both men look set to form an alliance to find Atlantis and Aquaman.
Jason Momoa has admitted he already pitched the opening scene of Aquaman 2 to Warner Bros bosses. But will it find room for the missing Justice League members?
He has also said he is confident Henry Cavill will return as Superman. However, asked which heroes he would liek t join him for Aquaman 2 and Momoa said Wonder Woman and Flash.
With Aquaman looking set to eclipse the box office of both Justice League films and the original Superman opener, it seems likely we will see another Aquaman film first.

There were raised eyebrows when Warner Bros announced Aquaman would open first in China, one week ahead of anywhere else in the world. Traditionally, Hollywood movies open there last. It is a tricky and unpredictable market where major franchises like Star Wars have dramatically underperformed. Aquaman’s unusual strategy was seen as a possible sign of low confidence. Instead, it has been a stroke of genius, setting the movie up for a global triumph.
Aquaman will pass $ 200million at the Chinese box office by the end of Thursday this week.
This will push the current worldwide take to over $ 300million before the film even opens in the US.
This means Aquaman will ride into American cinemas on a huge wave of confidence, buzz and anticipation, instead of bearing the legacy of a very bumpy big screen DC Extended Universe.
Advance sales have already outstripped some major superhereo rivals.
Fandango is reporting Aquaman presales have exceeded Wonder Woman.
The all-important opening weekend predictions are still modest at $ 68-75million, far behind Justice League’s $ 93.8million, however that movie then nosedived following terrible reviews and a divided fan response.
Aquaman, conversely, has picked up solid reviews and considerable overseas buzz. It is likely to perform strongly across the entire Christmas and New Year period and pull in young audiences and families, as well as the comicbook fandom.
Box office predictions for the five-day opening up to Christmas Eve are a strong $ 120million with some slightly wilder estimates it could go as high as $ 150million.
Although Transformers’ Bumblebee and Mary Poppins both open in the US this weekend also, Aquaman is expected to be the dominant blockbuster over the holiday period.
It is still early days, but some pundits have started to suggest the Jason Momoa solo movie could be the first DC movie to pass $ 1billion worldwide.
Either way, following the strong solo debut for Wonder Woman and positive advance buzz for 2019’s Shazam! it looks like the DCEU is finally back on much firmer ground moving forward.
