Blue Apron
(Reuters) – Blue Apron Holdings Inc reported a smaller-than-expected revenue drop and quarterly loss on Tuesday after a costly distribution hub switch forced it to slash marketing.
The meal-kit subscription service had 746,000 customers in the fourth quarter through Dec. 31, compared to 856,000 in the prior quarter and 879,000 a year earlier. The marketing pullback came despite mounting competition for customers from meal-kit rivals and Amazon.com Inc.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Walmart was either bored or feeling left out. The retailer, which has been fighting to compete with Amazon in online sales, has officially started selling meal kits. This comes after Amazon bought Whole Foods in June and began selling meal kits shortly after.
The move also comes after the embarrassing IPO of Blue Apron in July, in which shares briefly hit $ 11 before steadily declining to $ 4.27 as of Tuesday morning.
The meal-kit delivery business seems fun on the surface. But in reality, it’s a low-margin, highly competitive market, and Walmart is late to the game.
Walmart just starting selling meal kits in early December, but it’s already sold out of at least three of its limited options, such as the carb conscious $ 59.70 “Feel Good Meal Kit” from Home Chef that offers chicken, pork chop, and salmon.
The company is selling kits from two third-party vendors, including Chicago-based Home Chef, founded in 2013, and Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Takeout Kit, founded just last year. As of Wednesday, there were 16 options available from the two companies combined.
This seems to be a low-risk way for Walmart to feel out how interested its customers are in meal kits. If the interest is there, expect to see a much wider range of options in 2018 as it looks to take market share from its competitors.
Walmart’s more aggressive online approach seems to be paying off. Last month, it beat Wall Street forecasts on both the top and bottom lines and raised its holiday shopping forecast. In response, its stock shot up about 11% to a new all-time high of $ 100.13.
Walmart’s stock dropped about 6% in mid-June on the news that Amazon had scooped up Whole Foods. That’s because investors have seen what Amazon can do when it decides to disrupt an industry. This year, Amazon’s e-commerce sales are expected to increase 32%, to $ 196.8 billion dollars, up from $ 149 billion in 2016.
To put that in perspective, Amazon is expected to hold 43.5% of total e-commerce sales, up from 38% in 2016. Here’s a breakdown of the online e-commerce market according to data from eMarketer.
| Company | 2016 Market Share | 2017 (Estimated) Market Share |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | 38.1% | 43.5% |
| eBay | 7.8% | 6.8% |
| Apple | 3.2% | 3.6% |
| Walmart | 2.8% | 3.6% |
| Home Depot | 1.4% | 1.5% |
| Other | 46.7% | 41% |
Obviously, Amazon has the big upper hand. But you probably didn’t need a chart to tell you that.
Amazon is a part of our everyday lives because it’s quick and convenient, and we trust it. When it comes to food, those are the two most important things. We want our food quickly and in the most convenient way possible, but we also are more careful about the place where we buy food vs. where we buy something like a notepad.
The companies huge base of consumers who are already locked into the Amazon world via Prime could be easy to sell on Amazon’s meal kits as it grows the Whole Foods empire. For Walmart, it is slowly becoming a household e-commerce name as it works to prove it can ship quickly and be trusted.
It’s important to note that the U.S. represents a $ 5 billion meal-kit market, so there’s room for more players than Amazon, according to a recent report from food and beverage market researcher Packaged Facts. However, for Amazon and even Walmart, meal kits are just a fun experiment.
If this strategy doesn’t turn out to be profitable, or valuable enough to its customer base, Walmart can easily cut ties with Home Chef and Takeout Kit. However, if it does turn out to be popular and profitable, then Walmart can look at maybe acquiring one of the meal-kit companies, just as private grocery chain Albertsons acquired meal-kit company Plated for $ 200 million in September.
That’s obviously not the case for Blue Apron, which says its mission is to make “home cooking accessible to everyone.” At the end of November, Blue Apron co-founder and former CEO Matt Salzberg stepped down and was replaced by CFO Brad Dickerson.
However, a new captain can’t save a sinking ship — they can only try to keep it afloat a while longer. The bottom line is that Blue Apron didn’t have a unique business model that would prevent big-time players like Amazon and Walmart, or even Albertsons, from doing the exact same thing, except better and cheaper.
Walmart is right where it needs to be for now. The company had a blowout earnings round, is expecting a big Holiday shopping season, and is experimenting with new ways to continue to grow a loyal online customer base through things like a meal-kit delivery option.
One thing’s for sure: Blue Apron is getting coals in its stocking.

As we can see in this chart from Statista, Blue Apron’s growth — in revenue, customers, you name it — came to a dead halt in the third quarter. With his company’s share price already in the dumps, CEO Matt Salzberg announced Thursday he was stepping down.
It remains to be seen how Blue Apron will fare going forward. Several competitors have gone out of business this year. Meanwhile, Plated was bought by Albertsons for around $ 200 million in September, and HelloFresh recently went public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

Less than a month after an earnings report indicated customers dropped six percent from last year, Blue Apron has a new CEO, as co-founder Matt Salzberg steps down from his role as president and CEO. Former CFO Brad Dickerson will now fill both of those roles and join the company’s board of directors where Salzberg will remain as chairman.
Blue Apron just completed its initial public offering in June, but its stock price has already dropped from $ 10 to around $ 3 and last month it laid off six percent of its employees. The five-year-old company is facing more competition from others in the space like HelloFresh and Plated, while also being squeezed by meal kits from companies like Amazon (which just bought Whole Foods) and Kroger.

ANALYSIS:
A year that began with high hopes for a tech IPO revival has crashed into a wall of reality following sputtering public offerings from Snap and Blue Apron.
The catastrophe that is Blue Apron was driven home in recent days thanks to multiple shareholder lawsuits claiming management misled investors. Less than two months after its initial public offering, Blue Apron’s stock has been hovering at around half of its IPO price.
Snap, with the biggest tech IPO in years, has fallen below its initial price of $ 17 per share over concerns that Facebook is suffocating its growth. This hasn’t been helped by two earnings reports confirming investors’ fears that management may not have any good plan to get the company growing fast enough to justify its valuation. The stock has regained some lost ground in recent days, but it has remained under its IPO price since mid-July.
While it would be overstating things to say Snap and Blue Apron have killed the tech IPO market, they’ve certainly put a damper on it. Just two months ago, following the Snap IPO, Quartz crowed: “The tech IPO window is wide open, and Silicon Valley is rushing to cash in.”
That euphoria proved short-lived. According to Renaissance Capital, there have been 16 tech IPOs so far this year. The total for 2017 could still conceivably top the 29 in 2016. But that’s not saying much, because 2016 was a historically low moment for tech IPOs, according to Kathleen Smith, a principal at Renaissance Capital and manager of IPO ETFs.
One bit of mildly good news: The 16 recent IPOs are trading up 11 percent, despite what Smith called the drag from “those busted IPOs.”
“It’s not dead,” Smith said of the tech IPO market. And there have been some notable bright spots, including the recent Redfin IPO, which closed Wednesday at $ 25.75, well above its $ 15 IPO price.
Still, the disappointing Snap and Blue Apron IPOs are going to make life difficult for the herd of unicorns still waiting desperately to find an exit of some kind. Venture capitalists had been hoping that the IPO floodgates might at least crack open a bit this year to allow some of those startups to finally produce a return of some kind.
“They have a negative impact, there is no doubt,” Smith said of Blue Apron and Snap. “Especially for all those unicorns that are lined up…When a stock breaks below the IPO price, that puts fears into the hearts of investors.”
As it stands, the pressure is continuing to mount with no obvious release valve in sight. The Wall Street Journal counts 167 private companies valued at $ 1 billion or more, a number that has climbed by 10 since the start of the year.
This dynamic — a limp IPO market coupled with private valuations that continue to rise — points to a tension Smith thinks is nearing the breaking point.
Indeed, to address the unicorn issue, Social Capital Hedosophia Holdings has filed for an IPO to raise $ 500 million to create a holding company. That shell company would then acquire unicorns facing valuation issues that can’t figure out a path to an IPO.
Smith said this points to a problem with unicorns rather then the IPO market itself. A startup with a reasonable valuation may still find a way to an IPO, if they have strong balance sheets and a clear path to growth and profitability. The problem is that many unicorns don’t fit this criteria.
So Smith expects to see a reckoning later this year, as valuations are forced down and startups are sold below their investment value — something that could ricochet back to slow overall venture capital investments.
“There’s still a divide between the funding going in and the ability to exit,” Smith said. “It’s gummed up.”
]]>The meal kit-delivery service said it earned $ 238.1 million in revenue, topping analysts’ forecast for $ 235.8 million according to Bloomberg. It posted an adjusted EBITDA loss of $ 23.9 million, less than the expectation for a loss of $ 24.3 million.
Blue Apron shares rose by as much as 4% in premarket trading. The stock has been crushed since it started trading in June amid concern that Amazon’s entry into the meal delivery space would crimp its market share.

Sorry, Blue Apron, you just got Amazon’d.
Just two weeks ago, the meal-prep delivery startup looked as if it would coast through the road show for its initial public offering and start public trading with a juicy valuation of about $ 3 billion. Then the deal-happy retail juggernaut Amazon shelled out $ 13.7 billion to buy Whole Foods.
It was terrible timing for Blue Apron. Many potential investors quickly identified the possibility of more competition in the food-delivery industry and ran the other way.
As a result, Blue Apron took a cleaver to its IPO range, cutting it to $ 10 to $ 11 a share, down from $ 15 to $ 17. The company ultimately priced at $ 10 a share late Wednesday — 40% below the maximum it had sought. And, at $ 1.9 billion, the company’s market cap at the IPO price is less than the $ 2 billion valuation it fetched in its most recent round of private fund-raising.
Any shareholders hoping for relief were sorely disappointed Thursday, when Blue Apron opened for trading at $ 10. The stock rose by 1.1% to $ 10.11 at 1:05 p.m. ET.
This is just the latest example of Amazon imposing its will on an industry, erasing billions of dollars of competitors’ market value in the process. Armed with a war chest of cash and growing at an astronomical pace, the Jeff Bezos-led tech titan is clearly not afraid to throw its weight around.
Just ask Kroger, Costco, and Target, which before the Blue Apron debacle were the latest set of companies to get Amazon’d.
Their reckoning came after the Whole Foods acquisition, as investors interpreted Amazon’s likely focus on e-commerce and grocery delivery as bad news for traditional brick-and-mortar retailers. A group of grocers under the Business Insider-coined acronym WDSTCK — Walmart, Dollar General, SuperValu, Target, Costco, and Kroger — lost $ 24 billion in market value in just one week following the deal announcement.

Even peripherally related industries got Amazon’d to an extent after the Whole Foods deal. A group of pharmacy stocks known as CWACME — CVS, Walgreens, AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal, McKesson, and Express Scripts — dropped on news of the acquisition, losing roughly $ 7 billion in a week.
Amazon’s influence, however, can be a double-edged sword. The sneaker giant Nike soared by 2% on June 21 after it was announced that Amazon would begin selling its products directly. Nike is up by 3.5% since.
Investor attention will now turn to Amazon’s next endeavor. The pivot into grocery retail surprised many people, and it shows more than ever that no industry is off-limits.
As of right now, one thing is certain: It’s Amazon’s world, and everyone else is just living in it.

Following a disappointing IPO tainted by Amazon’s recent acquisition of Whole Foods, the CEO of Blue Apron isn’t giving up hope.
If Amazon “can help accelerate bringing online dollars into the offline grocery world and accelerate that transition from offline to online, we think that is good for us, and good for others players in online grocery,” Matt Salzberg said in an interview with CNBC on Thursday.
Salzberg is in damage control mode after Amazon’s $ 13.7 billion acquisition raised concerns over increased competition in the food delivery industry, throwing a wrench into Blue Apron’s plans to go public.
Originally expected to price at $ 15 to $ 17 a share, Blue Apron was forced to cut its IPO range to $ 10 to $ 11, ultimately pricing at $ 10 per share late on Wednesday. That was a full 40% below the maxium it had sought. And, at $ 1.9 billion, the company’s market cap at the IPO price is less than the $ 2 billion valuation it fetched in its last round of private fundraising, according to Crunch Base.
Blue Apron’s troubles highlight a bigger issue with Amazon: that it stands capable of erasing billions of dollars of market value with even the simplest corporate action. Companies ranging from Walmart to Express Scripts have found themselves in Amazon’s sights in recent weeks.
And with Amazon sitting on more than $ 20 billion in cash at the end of the first quarter, the reckoning in retail may just be getting started.

Blue Apron
(Reuters) – Online meal-kit company Blue Apron Holdings slashed the expected pricing range for its initial public offering amid growing concerns about the potential impact from Amazon.com’s deal to buy Whole Foods.
Blue Apron said on Wednesday it expects its initial public offering to be priced between $ 10 and $ 11 per share, down from its previous expectation of $ 15 to $ 17 per share.
The new pricing range implies a valuation of up to $ 2.08 billion, compared with $ 3.2 billion earlier.
Amazon, which said earlier this month it would buy Whole Foods Market Inc in a $ 13.7 billion deal, has dallied with both food delivery, through AmazonFresh, and meal kits, which deliver fresh ingredients and recipes to subscribers.
With Amazon gaining access to Whole Foods’ roughly 400-store footprint, the e-commerce juggernaut would command a distribution network dwarfing that of any meal-kit service.
Blue Apron, named after the uniform that apprentice chefs wear in France, has also worked to increase its automation to help it better compete with rivals.
The company said it expects net proceeds of around $ 292.7 million from the offering at the midpoint of the range.
The offering is expected to be priced on Wednesday and the stock is scheduled to debut on Thursday on the NYSE. (Reporting By Aparajita Saxena in Bengaluru; Editing by Saumyadeb Chakrabarty)

Blue Apron
I tried my first meal kit through Blue Apron in August 2014, and it was life-changing.
Meal kits — or deliveries that contain groceries and accompanying recipes — can get a bad rap. One of the biggest complaints from first-time users that I often hear is that they require too much work. (This is partially due to the widespread misunderstanding that the service targets “lazy” consumers).
Some critics also complain about the excessive packaging, since many of the ingredients are individually wrapped.
About 100 companies are now offering meal kits, but analysts are still unsure as to whether they are a passing fad.
Blue Apron is the biggest meal-kit service in the US, but it has been losing money. While the company’s revenue more than doubled to $ 795.4 million last year, it posted a net loss of $ 54.9 million.
The company has shipped 159 million meals since its inception in 2012. The company said Monday it expects its upcoming initial public offering to be priced at $ 15 to $ 17 per share, giving it a valuation as high as $ 3.18 billion.
After three years and hundreds of meals of cooking with Blue Apron, I wholeheartedly disagree with all the critics. I think meal kits are permanently changing how we eat and buy food, and I don’t think they are ever going to go away. (Before I explain why, let me clarify that I was not paid to write this review. I have never received free food from Blue Apron and I have no affiliation with the company whatsoever.)
Hayley PetersonBefore Blue Apron, I thought I knew how to cook. This was because I mainly stuck to simple recipes like casserole dishes and I often used a crock pot, which requires no cooking skills.
I wanted to learn more about making food, but I didn’t want to pay for — or make time for — expensive cooking classes and no matter how many cooking shows I watched I just couldn’t find the motivation to try and replicate a celebrity chef’s meal in my own kitchen.
Then I tried Blue Apron and everything changed.
The beginning — as any novice chef who has tried Blue Apron knows — was rough. The food prep alone, which consisted mostly of washing, chopping, slicing, and dicing ingredients, took me 45 minutes per meal at first, and I got three meals a week. The process was exhausting and confusing at times, and for the first couple weeks, I questioned whether it was more work than it was worth to eat some home-cooked yuzu kosho-glazed chicken drumsticks or pistachio-crusted catfish with date vinaigrette.
Hayley PetersonBut I stuck with it, and now I’m addicted.
Over the course of a couple months, and with the help of Blue Apron’s “how-to” videos on knife skills, I cut my prep time down to about 10 minutes or less per meal. The big, illustrated recipe cards that come with the meals helped me learn about the ingredients I was using and figure out how the food should look at each step along the way.
Three years later, I’m now completely confident in the kitchen and find that 95% of the meals I cook are better than something I might order in a restaurant. (For what it’s worth, my husband and most trusted taste tester agrees.)
I have also started venturing away from Blue Apron recipes and coming up with my own concoctions in the kitchen because I’ve learned over time which ingredients pair well together, and I have memorized various cooking processes for the hundreds of different ingredients that have landed on my doorstep each week.
The biggest surprise for me with Blue Apron — and the reason why I have stuck with it so long — is that it has changed my diet for the better.
Hayley PetersonI cook with dozens of different ingredients every week, including tons of leafy greens and vegetables, healthy grains like farro, freekeh, and quinoa, and many healthy ingredients I never even knew existed (I’m looking at you, celeriac, tatsoi, black rice, Tinkerbell peppers, and Thai basil).
The ingredients arrive in perfectly measured proportions, so I don’t waste any food or overeat with a second serving.
My proteins are more balanced because each week I typically receive one seafood dish (such as catfish, cod, or salmon), one pork or steak dish, and one chicken or turkey dish. I get a healthy serving of vegetables with every protein.
Best of all, I don’t have to spend hours planning dinners and grocery lists every week, thanks to the box that Blue Apron drops on my doorstep every Monday.
Hayley PetersonOutside of teaching me how to cook and saving me time and trips to the grocery store, the service saves me a lot of money.
The dinners cost $ 20 each for two people, and if I tried to recreate the meals on my own at the grocery store (which I have done several times) they always cost me more. The deliveries have also corresponded with a sharp drop in the amount I’m spending at restaurants every month.
On top of all the benefits, Blue Apron’s customer service has been top notch. You can cancel your membership at any time, without any penalties. You can also cancel deliveries if you’ll be out of town or just don’t like any of the recipes being offered that week. If there is every anything wrong with your delivery, Blue Apron is likely to reimburse you for the entire cost of the package.
Hayley PetersonSo I’m admittedly obsessed with meal kits. It’s one of the easiest, cheapest, and least time-consuming ways to eat gourmet, healthy home-cooked meals.
That’s why I don’t think this is a passing fad.
The meal kit market is currently estimated to be about $ 1.5 billion, according to NPD Group, and could grow by as much as $ 5 billion over the next decade.
Blue Apron isn’t the only company doing this. There’s also Plated, Hello Fresh, Sun Basket, Purple Carrot, and tons of others.
As consumer tastes continue shifting toward healthier eating, the opportunity for these companies will only get bigger.
