Federal prosecutors have accidentally revealed that criminal charges have been filed against “Assange”—an apparent reference to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. The feds filed the revealing document back in August, but the slip-up wasn’t noticed until it was flagged in a Thursday evening tweet.

The filing was in an unrelated sex crimes case in the Eastern District of Virginia. Federal prosecutors asked the court to seal its criminal complaint and arrest warrant against a man named  Seitu Sulayman Kokayi—for “coercion and enticement of a juvenile to engage in unlawful sexual activity”—to avoid tipping the suspect off. But in two places, the document refers to “Assange” instead of the actual defendant in the case.

The document argues that the case should be sealed because, “due to the sophistication of the defendant and the publicity surrounding the case, no other procedure is likely to keep confidential the fact that Assange has been charged.”

Now ‘Luke Cage’ is Canceled at Netflix, Apparently No Longer Bulletproof https://briefnews.eu/now-luke-cage-is-canceled-at-netflix-apparently-no-longer-bulletproof/ https://briefnews.eu/now-luke-cage-is-canceled-at-netflix-apparently-no-longer-bulletproof/#respond Sun, 21 Oct 2018 13:45:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/now-luke-cage-is-canceled-at-netflix-apparently-no-longer-bulletproof/ Luke Cage Canceled

What’s the opposite of Sweet Christmas?

Exactly one week after Iron Fist was canceled at Netflix, the streaming service has just axed another member of The Defenders from getting another season. Luke Cage has been canceled and will no longer be getting a third season order, which came as a surprise to showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker and his writers room. Get the details below.

Deadline has word on Luke Cage canceled with a statement from Marvel and Netflix:

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

When Iron First was canceled, everyone working on Luke Cage was still expecting a third season renewal. In fact, when Iron Fist was canceled, it was hinted that the character would still return, leading many to believe the a team-up of the two characters in a Heroes for Hire story arc would finally play out. But now both of the heroes are out of a job. So what happened with Luke Cage?

Some of the scripts for the next season of Luke Cage had already been turned in to Netflix, and apparently the streaming service wasn’t impressed with what they had been given so far. The result was the old standby of creative differences and neither Netflix nor the Luke Cage crew could come to a compromise to strikes a deal that would have locked down a third season.

In the wake of the disagreement behind the scenes, the writers room was put on hold and some “turmoil ensued this week.” That’s where the creative differences came into play with regards to where the show was heading, and there was even talk of some personnel changes. All those difficulties led to Netflix deciding just to cancel the series altogether.

So what does this mean for the future of Iron Fist and Luke Cage? They may not have a home at Netflix anymore, but let’s not forget that Disney has their own streaming service coming in 2019, and both shows could easily end up continuing over there. If they don’t both return with their own shows, they could easily come back in a Heroes for Hire series, or one could come back in the other’s series (likely Iron Fist popping up in Luke Cage).

As for Jessica Jones, Daredevil and The Punisher, it doesn’t sound like those shows are on the verge of cancellation. But we thought the same thing about Luke Cage, so who knows what Netflix is thinking at this point. Stay tuned.

Wes Anderson’s Next Movie is Apparently a Musical Set in 1940s France https://briefnews.eu/wes-andersons-next-movie-is-apparently-a-musical-set-in-1940s-france/ https://briefnews.eu/wes-andersons-next-movie-is-apparently-a-musical-set-in-1940s-france/#respond Wed, 15 Aug 2018 22:33:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wes-andersons-next-movie-is-apparently-a-musical-set-in-1940s-france/ Wes Anderson's next movie

Following this year’s middling (and arguably problematic) Isle of Dogs, writer/director Wes Anderson is looking to ratchet up the whimsy for his newest project and tackle something he’s never done before: a full-fledged musical.

A new report indicates that Anderson’s upcoming film, which is still untitled, is going to be a musical that takes place in post-WWII France. Read more about Wes Anderson’s next movie below.

Over the past few days, rumors have spread indicating that Anderson’s next film will be set in the French town of Angoulême, and now a French outlet called Charente Libre (via The Playlist) reports that Anderson intends for the project to be a musical. It will be fascinating to see if the film leans heavily on its location for story inspiration, and if Anderson learned anything about incorporating cultural influences into his movies in the wake of the reaction to Isle of Dogs.

The report also says that location scouting has begun, with “contacts [being] made locally to look for houses” that would appear in the movie. That means this will mark a return to live-action for Anderson, who is coming off of the stop-motion Isle of Dogs. The plot of this musical remains a mystery, but considering the 1940s time period, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the director make his own version of a sweeping post-war love story.

Anderson has worked with 20th Century Fox, Focus Features, and Fox Searchlight over the past decade, and we’re not sure which of them will distribute this new movie yet – or if another contender may emerge to switch things up. There are also some conflicting reports about when filming is supposed to begin. Early word suggested cameras wouldn’t roll until February 2019, but Charente Libre says shooting could start as early as November or December of this year.

Either way, that doesn’t give Frances McDormand much time to practice what I assume will be a big emotional song and dance number. I mean, there’s technically no guarantee that she’s going to be in the movie, but unless Anderson suddenly decides to drastically break from his traditions, we can guess a majority of the actors who will likely fill out this cast.

In the meantime, check out this brief musical number from this year’s Paddington 2 as a stylistic forebear (get it? fore-“bear”? because it’s Paddington!) of what could be in store for us in Wes Anderson’s next movie:

David Lynch Has Apparently Opened His Own Online T-Shirt Shop https://briefnews.eu/david-lynch-has-apparently-opened-his-own-online-t-shirt-shop/ https://briefnews.eu/david-lynch-has-apparently-opened-his-own-online-t-shirt-shop/#respond Mon, 11 Jun 2018 08:47:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/david-lynch-has-apparently-opened-his-own-online-t-shirt-shop/ David Lynch T-Shirt Store

David Lynch, an artist who exists in a whooshing void full of amazing hair, cigarettes and beautiful, horrifying movies, has decided to open his own T-shirt shop on Amazon.

David Lynch doesn’t make many movies anymore – last year’s Twin Peaks revival was the first thing he’d filmed in nearly 11 years. Instead, he bides his time creating art in his studio. The art is predictably Lynchian – strange, haunting, darkly funny. Now, Lynch is offering his art to the public in a brand new way: on T-shirts.

The filmmaker launched an Amazon store the other day called Studio David Lynch, and while it’s possible he’ll sell other items in the future, the only things available now are T-shirts. Like this one, dubbed TURKEY CHEESE HEAD T-SHIRT.

TURKEY CHEESE HEAD

The shirts all feature art created by Lynch, so if you’ve ever wanted to own any of the man’s artistic creations, here’s your chance! Each shirt will run you $ 26, which is a bit pricey for a T-shirt. But for fans of Lynch’s work, or fans of weird, abstract T-shirts, these are must-haves.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME

If you wan’t to learn more about Lynch and his art, I highly recommend the documentary David Lynch: The Art Life.

In the film, director Jon Nguyen films Lynch at work. We watch as Lynch prattles around in his studio, constantly smoking while creating strange, funny works of art. Along the way, we learn about Lynch’s youth and life, and the beginning of his filmmaking career. It’s sort of like the David Lynch origin story – the film shows us where he came from, and what drives him. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the inner world of one of the most interesting filmmakers of our time.

This in itself is a minor miracle, because Lynch is usually guarded in interviews, and almost always refuses to explain himself and his art. But Nguyen’s film found a way to get Lynch talking.

“We were able to give him a canvas to let these stories leak out, because we knew that was what we wanted to do. He’s always been reluctant to talk about his films,” Nguyen said. “He’s very reserved. Talking about his films we were like, ‘Okay, the best key to understanding his films must be from him as a person.’ And it’s not him as an adult, it’s him during formative periods. I wanted learn about him during Philadelphia. I was like, ‘Oh, there must be interesting stuff, because that’s when he was really formulating these ideas. Must be,’ so we framed it that way up to Eraserhead. Once he becomes a filmmaker living in L.A. was not interesting because it was a different lifestyle. The early, young artist period, I knew was going to be interesting. Using that framework we were able to dig up stories to help us to really understand his films a lot better.”

You can access Lynch’s T-shirt store here.

LG G7 ThinQ’s speaker is apparently ten times louder than others https://briefnews.eu/lg-g7-thinqs-speaker-is-apparently-ten-times-louder-than-others/ https://briefnews.eu/lg-g7-thinqs-speaker-is-apparently-ten-times-louder-than-others/#respond Sun, 29 Apr 2018 02:24:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lg-g7-thinqs-speaker-is-apparently-ten-times-louder-than-others/

Another day, another LG G7 ThinQ teaser. Following the 1,000-nit super bright display, today the Korean giant decided to boast another feature on its upcoming flagship smartphone: the “Boombox Speaker.” As the name implies, we’re told to expect a speaker that “increases the base sound level by more than 6dB with twice the amount of bass.” This apparently translates to more than ten times the loudness than that of a typical smartphone, which is surprising given the usual physical limitations. As a bonus, the bass can be further amplified when you place the device on a solid surface or box.

LG didn’t give away the whole story in its teaser, but in short, the Boombox Speaker relies on a special resonance chamber design within the phone. The attached image even suggests that the speaker is somehow using the device’s whole body, which should provide a lot more resonance space than conventional smartphone speaker modules. We’ll try to find out more about this intriguing design at the launch, and hopefully the audio sounds as good as it claims to be.

There’s also good news on the headphone side. Like recent LG flagship phones, the G7 ThinQ will also be packing a Hi-Fi Quad DAC to please high-end headphone users. What’s new this time is the addition of DTS:X support — apparently the first for smartphones — which brings 3D surround sound effects at up to 7.1 to the user, even when normal headphones are used.

Obviously, we’ll need to see how good the Boombox Speaker and the DTS:X feature are in real life, but at least on paper, the former will likely become a much-welcomed experience — something that LG’s mobile division desperately needs in order to sell more units.

‘The Stand’ is Apparently Now a 10-Hour CBS All Access Series https://briefnews.eu/the-stand-is-apparently-now-a-10-hour-cbs-all-access-series/ https://briefnews.eu/the-stand-is-apparently-now-a-10-hour-cbs-all-access-series/#respond Sat, 31 Mar 2018 09:25:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-stand-is-apparently-now-a-10-hour-cbs-all-access-series/ The Stand adaptation

A new adaptation of Stephen King‘s massive post-apocalyptic novel The Stand has been brewing for years. The Fault in our Stars and The New Mutants director Josh Boone has been attached to direct the adaptation since 2014, but the project has been delayed. Now, an update has arrived: The Stand might end up as a 10-hour CBS All Access series. More on The Stand series below.

Just what in the name of Captain Trips is going on with the new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand? New Mutants director Josh Boone has been attached to helm a new take on King’s tome of terror for years, but the project hit a roadblock and ended up in limbo sometime around 2016. Now, we finally have an update. The Tracking Board reports that Boone is still attached, and that the adaptation “is coming together as a ten-hour limited series at CBS All Access.” CBS All Access is CBS’s subscription streaming service, home to Star Trek: Discovery and The Good Fight.

King’s lengthy novel concerns the breakdown of society following a mutated flu outbreak that kills 99% of humanity in the span of a few weeks. The book focuses on two specific sets of survivors – a group lead by a benevolent 108-year-old woman named Mother Abagail, and a group lead by Randal Flagg, a demonic, supernatural figure who wants to spread chaos. The book was previously adapted into a 1994 miniseries. The news that The Stand might become a new series is just the latest entry in an ever-mutating history surrounding possible adaptations of King’s book.

The Stand Adaptation History

In 2011, a new The Stand adaptation was announced, with the Harry Potter team of director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves in charge of the project, with a plan to possibly adapt the book into three films. This news was short-lived, because later in 2011, Yates was out, and Ben Affleck became attached to helm the film.

In 2012, Affleck provided an update on his Stand adaptation, saying the scripting was proving difficult:

“Right now we’re having a very hard time. But I like the idea—it’s like The Lord of the Rings in America. And it’s about how we would reinvent ourselves as a society. If we started all over again, what would we do?”

By 2014, Affleck had departed, and Warner Bros. tapped Josh Boone, director of The Fault in our Stars, to helm. After Boone joined the film, word broke that the adaptation was now being planned as four films. Boone said he was throwing out earlier drafts, which treated the material more like a summer blockbuster than a film focusing on characters:

“[Those drafts] were not so much where I thought they should be going with it. [They were] much more like a big summer blockbuster. When I thought about The Stand it’s so much about the vast network of characters, and all their problems. It’s kind of a morality play set in post-apocalyptic America. The battle between good and evil is the battle for these peoples’ souls. They make choices which dictate the fate of humanity.”

Boone then added that he initially pitched Warner Bros. on one three hour movie:

“I really wanted to do an A-list actor, really grounded, credible version of the movie. I sold them on that and they hired me…I sold them on a single, three hour movie. I went and got [Stephen] King sold on it, everybody’s really excited…I told the story non-linear and that was the way I was able to compress that book and get everything into that script. You open with Mother Abigail dying and sending the guys off, and then you jump back in time… So what happened is the script gets finished, I write it in like five months, everybody loves it, King loves it, $ 87 million is what it was budgeted at, really expensive for a horror drama that doesn’t have set pieces.”

After this pitch, however, Warner’s asked if he wanted to do multiple films:

“They came back and said “would you do it as multiple films?” and I said “fuck yes!” I loved my script, and I was willing to drop it in an instant because you’re able to do an even truer version that way. So I think we are going to do like four movies. I can’t tell you anything about how we’re going to do them, or what’s going to be in which movie. I’ll just say we are going to do four movies, and we’re going to do THE STAND at the highest level you can do it at, with a cast that’s going to blow people’s minds. We’ve already been talking to lots of people, and have people on board in certain roles that people don’t know about. We’re looking to go into production next year, maybe in the spring.”

Later in 2014, word broke that Matthew McConaughy was reportedly in talked to play Randall Flagg, the main villain of the story. This fell through, and McConaughy would go on to star in another King adaptation – The Dark Tower.

In 2015, rumors surfaced that Boone and Warner Bros. were “talking to Showtime about airing an 8-part miniseries of The Stand that would act as a lead up to The Stand movie, which would hit theaters after the series ends. ”

By 2016, however, Boone’s The Stand was on hold. Boone then considered adapting another King book, Revival. Later in 2016, producer Roy Lee – who would later produce 2017’s It – offered an update on the project:

“Right now it’s just in a holding pattern trying to figure out how to best make the movie because we’ve toyed with breaking it up into multiple movies, making it into one, making it into two. The latest draft, Josh Boone had written it and he was very anxious to make it but since then has written another script, Revival, which he’s gonna do beforehand, so we’re just waiting for that.”

Lee also revealed the idea of a TV series leading into the film was dead:

“There was definitely talk about doing that but the logistics made it very difficult to try to do a worldwide launch of a movie when the TV component would not necessarily be released at the same time worldwide. So it became a logistic nightmare to try to figure that out, so that plan was abandoned.”

Since then, all has been quiet on The Stand front. Now comes the word of the CBS All Access series. Honestly, this makes the most sense. There’s just too much story to fit The Stand into one movie. And the idea of breaking it up into multiple movies never sit right with me. A limited series, however, would be able to do King’s work justice. Now we’ll just have to see if it happens.

‘Call Me By Your Name’ Sequel Details Revealed, Actors Apparently Confirmed to Return https://briefnews.eu/call-me-by-your-name-sequel-details-revealed-actors-apparently-confirmed-to-return/ https://briefnews.eu/call-me-by-your-name-sequel-details-revealed-actors-apparently-confirmed-to-return/#respond Fri, 09 Mar 2018 10:13:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/call-me-by-your-name-sequel-details-revealed-actors-apparently-confirmed-to-return/ Call Me By Your Name sequel details

We’ve known that Call Me By Your Name, last year’s romantic indie drama from director Luca Guadagnino, was going to get a sequel for a little while now. The filmmaker has mentioned it a few times, but only in vague terms – until last Sunday night on the Oscars red carpet. There he revealed some new Call Me By Your Name sequel details, and seemed to confirm that actors Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet will return to reprise their roles.

Speaking with USA Today, Guadagnino confirmed that he’s already hard at work on a follow-up to his sensual indie romance, and provided a few more Call Me By Your Name sequel details:

“I’m already conceiving the story with André Aciman, and it’s gonna happen five or six years afterwards, so almost in 1990. It’s gonna be a new movie, a different tone. You’ll see a lot of the East Coast of America – they’re going to go around the world.”

When pressed whether the original cast of Hammer and Chalamet will be coming back to play Oliver and Elio, Guadagnino responded, “Of course! How can we not?” But it’s unclear whether that means that he and Aciman – who wrote the original novel on which the first film is based – are merely writing the film with those actors in mind, or if Hammer and Chalamet have literally already signed on to be a part of the sequel. They’ve all spoken very highly of their time filming together, so even if the actors aren’t signed yet, I don’t imagine it’ll be too tough to convince them to reunite and continue the story.

Guadagnino previously teased the idea that he might actually end up making more than one Call Me By Your Name sequel, invoking Michael Apted’s Up series of documentaries that revisit with the same subjects every seven years. It remains to be seen how long fans will have to wait to see Elio and Oliver reunite on the big screen. When asked when he expects to start filming Call Me By Your Name 2, Guadagnino simply said, “We have to get there with the script, but we will.” Previously, though, the director mentioned that in three years, Timothee Chalamet’s actual age would align with what Elio’s age should be in this sequel, so we could be looking at a 2021 release.

Meanwhile, Guadagnino’s next project is a remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 Italian horror film Suspiria. “It’s a movie about guilt, and it’s about motherhood,” the director told Variety about that project. “It has no primary colors in its color palette [unlike the original]. It’s the opposite of Call Me. Call Me is light, warm, and summer-ish, and Suspiria is winter-ish, evil, and really dark.”
