OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau formally apologized on Wednesday for the country’s 1939 refusal to take in a ship carrying more than 900 Jewish refugees, adding that the country would do more to protect Canadian Jews from violence.
The St. Louis left Hamburg in May 1939 in a desperate search for a safe haven from persecution by Nazi Germany. After it was rebuffed by Canada and other nations, it returned to Europe, where historians have estimated that more than 250 of the passengers were murdered in Nazi death camps.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was back on Capitol Hill today for another round of questioning by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, following Tuesday’s marathon five-hour Senate hearing.
During the hearing on Wednesday that went on for several hours, Zuckerberg was apologetic from the opening, in what has been described as the latest leg in the embattled CEO’s “I’m sorry” tour.
Congress gets a visit from planet Zuckerberg. “I shall prevent any further election meddling by destroying the Earth with my Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator App! The sudden drop in Facebook’s stock has made me angry! VERY ANGRY INDEED!!!” pic.twitter.com/qwCpJoUqnS

Saying “sorry” is nothing new for the 33-year-old billionaire, and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Illinois) used her time to read out a list of past apologies from Zuckerberg, mostly for privacy violations. After the exhaustive list, she concluded that “self-regulation simply does not work.”
Rep. Jan Schakowsky is now listing Mark Zuckerberg’s various apologies and saying self-regulation has failed. This is beyond dispute now. The House has done a much better job than the Senate questioning Zuckerberg. #AskZuck

#Zuckerberg That smell emanating from Zuck’s underside sitting atop his briefcase his ass being fried by Ms. Schakowsky of Illinois.

Zuckerberg was evasive when asked what Facebook does to safeguard user data, and he tried to conflate users controlling sharing their posts and Facebook giving those posts to advertisers. Time and time again, he fell back on the reliable “we don’t sell your data” line.
If there’s one clear takeaway it’s that Facebook sells my data

Zuckerberg keeps saying that you get to choose who you “share” any information with at the top of the app.
But *every time* you post, you do share that info with FB—who then rent it to advertisers. These are 2 different uses of “share” and MZ is skating on the difference.

Likewise, when asked about whether Facebook would be willing to change its business model to better protect user privacy, Zuckerberg said: “I’m not sure what that means.”
Congresswomen: Was your personal data sold to malicious third parties?
Zuckerberg: Yes.
Congresswomen: Are you willing to change your business model in the interest of protecting individual privacy?
Zuckerberg: Don’t know what that means.
Fam.

If a takeaway from Tuesday’s hearing was that the Senate doesn’t have a basic factual understanding of Facebook, a takeaway from Wednesday’s is that Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t really, either.

Questions about censorship dogged Zuckerberg throughout the hearing. Several committee members pressed him on Facebook’s censorship of conservative content, which was exemplified by the company flagging pro-Trump conservative vloggers Diamond and Silk for “inappropriate content.”
Drunk with power, far left activists within Facebook thought they could bully and silence all conservatives. HUGE mistake. pic.twitter.com/4AVr9AEF4n

Zuckerberg claimed his platform is made for “all kinds of ideas” and denied bias against conservatives.
Very interesting how Mark Zuckerberg claims (likely lying) he doesn’t know the political affiliation of his employees…
Meanwhile, Facebook’s algorithms precisely pin point the political affiliation of all its users.
Let that sink in….
— Jack Murphy (@RealJack) April 11, 2018
Zuckerberg was again asked whether Facebook could listen in to users’ conversations through their phone, an accusation he denied. Targeted ads based on conversations are just a “coincidence.”
The “Is Facebook listening to my conversations?” question comes up again, this time from Rep. Larry Buschon. Zuckerberg says no, FB does not listen to verbal communication; chalks up eerily specific ads to “coincidence”
— Lauren (@LaurenGoode) April 11, 2018
Throughout the hearing, Zuckerberg vowed that a sophisticated AI algorithm would help his company better fight “hate speech” and identify malicious actors, raising the question of what exactly constitutes “hate speech” and who will train the AI to identify the “right” kind of speech to block.
Zuckerberg testified he’s ‘optimistic’ that in 5-10 years, Facebook will have AI tools to automatically censor ‘hate speech’. But he couldn’t define ‘hate speech’, beyond whatever makes some people feel ‘unsafe’. The problem of selective enforcement is horrifying. pic.twitter.com/i0Nc3RqgAV

So remember, when Zuckerberg says he wants to police speech on his platform of 2 billion users with an AI, he is trying to make you think it will be fair because it is machine, a program. But it won’t be, at all. It will be used to propagate one view and one view only: Facebook’s

The questions on Wednesday were more pointed than yesterday, with Zuckerberg visibly uncomfortable at times. In an exchange with Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Florida), Zuckerberg mumbled and dodged. As Rep. David McKinley (R-West Virginia) grilled him over Facebook’s complicity in allowing illegal pharmacies to use the platform to sell opioids, Zuckerberg squirmed.
I love it, because Zuck can’t give the real answer which is “we already know everything about you, EVERYTHING, you puny humans are so dim and predictable that we can target these adverts to you anyway”

Round 1 may have been a draw, but Zuckerberg is getting fried right now.

The questioning might have been sharper than at Tuesday’s Senate hearing, but for many Twitter users, the session looked like a teenage boy helping his grandparents sent up a Facebook page.
The twist is Zuckerberg was already found guilty and his punishment is listening to 60-year-olds in Congress giving him their hot facebook takes for hours & hours

World-renowned performance coach Tony Robbins has apologized for remarks he made in March, about how women use the #MeToo movement to “get significance.”
Robbins posted the apology on Facebook and linked to the statement on Twitter. It read, in part: “I apologize for suggesting anything other than my profound admiration for the #MeToo movement. Let me clearly say, I agree with the goals of the #MeToo movement and its founding message of ’empowerment through empathy,’ which makes it a beautiful force for good.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Director Christopher Nolan revealed that he wrote Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos an apology after calling Netflix’s movie strategy “mindless,” in an interview with Variety.
“I should have been more polite,” Nolan said. “I said what I believe, but I was undiplomatic in the way I expressed it. I wasn’t giving any context to the frankly revolutionary nature of what Netflix has done. It’s extraordinary. They need appropriate respect for that, which I have.”
In July, the director heavily criticized the streaming company’s movie strategy and its resistance to the theatrical window, during an interview with IndieWire, and even accused Netflix of trying to shut down theaters.
“I think the investment that Netflix is putting into interesting filmmakers and interesting projects would be more admirable if it weren’t being used as some kind of bizarre leverage against shutting down theaters,” Nolan said at the time. “It’s so pointless. I don’t really get it.”
But Nolan isn’t the only one that’s criticized Netflix’s strategy: Netflix has clashed with the theater industry thanks in large part to its release strategy.
Netflix releases its films both in theaters and on its site simultaneously, without waiting the traditional 90-day theatrical window. This stands in contrast to the theater-friendly policy of Amazon, which respects the traditional window. As a result, Netflix has been blacklisted from releasing its films in most major theater chains.
Netflix achieved a major film milestone this year when two of its films — “Okja” and “The Meyerowitz Stories” — were admitted into the Festival de Cannes. But criticism from the old guard prompted the festival to add a new rule dictating that any films that wished to be included in the festival next year would have to have a theatrical release in France.
In a Facebook post, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings responded to the festival’s ruling saying that he felt theater chains were trying to “block” Netflix from entering the “festival competition.”
Despite criticisms of Netflix’s methods, the streaming giant seems to be moving onward and upward, and is planning on releasing 80 films in 2018, according to Variety.

Speaking to PBS NewsHour, Erdogan said that “President Trump called me about a week ago about this issue.
“He said that he was sorry, and he told me that he was going to follow up on this issue when we come to the United States within the framework of an official visit.”
Erdogan was referring to 15 Turkish security officials who were indicted by a US grand jury for attacking peaceful pro-Kurdish protesters in May. The incident took place outside the house of the Turkish ambassador to the US, where Erdogan was staying during a visit to Washington DC.
However, the Turkish leader said the protesters weren’t actually peaceful, but were “insulting us, and they were screaming and shouting.”
“The police failed to intervene properly. And similar protests were seen around the White House as well when we were inside of the embassy residence. The protesters were very close to my car, to my vehicle.”
He went on to accuse the protesters of being PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) and FETO (Fetullah Terrorist Organization) “terrorists.”
Erdogan said that although the US police officers were “officers of the state, not the federal government,” they were “in charge of maintaining safety around me and security. They failed to do that.”
At that moment, according to Erdogan, his security guards “came to his aid” and “made sure that everything was safe and secure” around him.
Erdogan, who is currently in New York for the annual UN General Assembly gathering, said he will be meeting with Trump on Thursday to “talk about these developments in a very extensive fashion.
“I hope and pray that justice will be served as soon as possible, because I know that the United States is very sensitive in terms of judiciary and in terms of the rule of law and the legal aspects,” he said.
Meanwhile, a White House official has spoken out against Erdogan’s claim of a Trump apology, telling CNBC that the two leaders “discussed a wide range of issues but there was no apology.”
Erdogan’s recollection of the event is far from what the District of Columbia Attorney’s Office said in a statement at the time, noting that the defendants “were indicted on a charge of conspiracy to commit a crime of violence, with a bias crime enhancement.”
Video footage circulated after the brawl showed men in suits viciously attacking the protesters, pushing them to the ground, and kicking some of them in the head.
The incident also led the US to pull out of a major arms deal with Turkey on Monday, which would have seen Ankara purchase $ 1.2 million in weapons for presidential security guards, including hundreds of semi-automatic handguns and ammunition.
Washington’s withdrawal from the deal prompted Erdogan to slam the US for choosing to instead “give weapons to terrorists,” referring to its decision to arm Syrian Kurds – a move which the White House believes is essential to seizing the last major Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) stronghold of Raqqa.
