The former Labour MP, now a Liberal Democrat, told BBC Breakfast host Charlie Stayt that Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal does not solve the political impasse in the long term. But the BBC host challenged him on his party’s alternative solutions to the issue and pointed out they also do not resolve the debate in the long term. Mr Stayt said: “For some people, the argument you made there makes some sense – they are fed up with the process.

“But I think the phrase you used a moment ago is that a ‘gangplank leads to nowhere’.

“Now, tomorrow, if the vote goes against Boris Johnson who knows what will happen – is what some people would say.

“That really is a vote into who knows what. Is there any evidence that the EU is ever going to offer a deal that is different from the one that we have now?”

The Lib Dem Remainer replied: “They have offered a deal – if you want to use that terminology – they said you can stay in the single market and the customs union.

“But it was this Conservative Government who said no to that.

“What we do know is that Parliament has passed that Benn Act which safeguards the situation in the short term, which means we don’t just crash out.

“And the Prime Minister, if there is no agreement that has been finalised by Parliament tomorrow, will have to send this letter and request an extension.

“And Donald Tusk, who is the President of the European Council, is clear that that has not been ruled out. Lots of parliamentarians have good relations with other Governments in the EU.”

But the BBC host interrupted Mr Umunna and rightly pointed out: “Yes, but that doesn’t get us anywhere! All that gets us is until Christmas.”

It comes as Boris Johnson faces an uphill challenge in the Commons on Saturday with MPs on all sides of the opposition benches pledging to vote against his Brexit proposal.

The DUP, which is crucial to the Prime Minister’s majority in Parliament, has vowed to vote against the deal on the issue of consent – or lack of – given to Northern Ireland over the future relationship with the EU.

The Labour Party also vowed to vote against the deal, followed by the SNP and the Liberal Democrats.

If the deal does not get through the Commons the Prime Minister will be forced to ask for an extension to the Article 50 process as dictated by the Benn Act.

The extension will last until at least January 31, 2020, but it remains unclear whether the EU will grant it without any conditions attached to it.

European Council Donald Tusk suggested that an extension could only be granted this time if attached to either a second Brexit referendum or a general election.

Queen Elizabeth II: Monarch has been to this country more than anywhere else – but why? https://briefnews.eu/queen-elizabeth-ii-monarch-has-been-to-this-country-more-than-anywhere-else-but-why/ https://briefnews.eu/queen-elizabeth-ii-monarch-has-been-to-this-country-more-than-anywhere-else-but-why/#respond Tue, 04 Dec 2018 18:03:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/queen-elizabeth-ii-monarch-has-been-to-this-country-more-than-anywhere-else-but-why/

Queen Elizabeth II has visited countries all over the world during her very long reign. There’s one country, in particular, she has been to more than any other destination. The Queen has been to Canada a grand total of 22 times, making it her most-visited country. However, there is a very good reason why the monarch keeps returning to the North American country.

Canada is a member of the Commonwealth and the royal is Queen of all Commonwealth realms, as well as the UK.

This makes her Canada’s head of state – although it is a purely ceremonial role.

The royal first visited the country in 1957 and called Canada “a wonderful and exhilarating country.”

She was usually accompanied by her husband Prince Phillip, 97, but she has also visited with her children Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

The Queen has visited every province and territory in Canada during her reign.

On two occasions, Elizabeth made a state visit on behalf of Canada as the country’s monarch.

She was hosted in the US as the Queen of Canada on two separate state visits.

Canada and the UK are the only countries the Queen as made a state visit on behalf on.

During a trip to Canada in 1970, the royal made a shocking sartorial choice when she visited.

It was the first time the Queen was photographed wearing a pair of trousers on an official visit.

Her matte silk trouser suit was designed by dressmaker Ian Thomas, who received a Royal Warrant in 1973.

The Queen has worn trousers on other occasions, although it is rare to see her on official visits in them.

Elizabeth has also visited Australia 15 times in her role as head of the Commonwealth.

On one visit many were shocked at the rather unusual interaction between the Queen and her husband.

She and Prince Philip headed to Australia in 1954, following her ascension to the throne, for an eight-week tour.

An Australian film crew caught the moment the Queen threw a pair of shoes and a tennis racket at Prince Philip.

Just moments after he stormed out of their villa, the Queen was shown to be screaming at him to stop and come back.

She then quickly pulled him back inside, with the event being caught on camera by cameraman Frank Bagnall.

Pentagon's ‘self-defense’ means war anywhere, any time. But there's a call to regulate war powers https://briefnews.eu/pentagons-self-defense-means-war-anywhere-any-time-but-theres-a-call-to-regulate-war-powers/ https://briefnews.eu/pentagons-self-defense-means-war-anywhere-any-time-but-theres-a-call-to-regulate-war-powers/#respond Thu, 04 Oct 2018 23:49:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pentagons-self-defense-means-war-anywhere-any-time-but-theres-a-call-to-regulate-war-powers/ A post-9/11 act grants the president authority to wage foreign wars with few restrictions. However, Democrats want the Pentagon to explain a lesser-known policy that allows the military to strike almost anywhere, at any time.

Passed easily in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) streamlines the usual requirement that the president seek congressional approval to wage war, allowing him to use all “necessary and appropriate force” against anyone he decides “planned, authorized, committed or aided” the 9/11 attacks.

Since its passing, the AUMF has been invoked 37 times to allow US military action in countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Somalia and Yemen. The global presence of extremist groups like al-Qaeda means that wherever the US wants to get involved, there’ll more than likely be someone there connected in some way with 9/11, giving intervention the green light.

But what about those other times? The US has a presence in over 150 countries worldwide, and surely can’t just open fire willy-nilly in these countries?

Well, sometimes it can – under the Department of Defense’s policy of ‘collective self-defense.’ According to the DoD, this policy authorizes US forces to intervene “with necessary and appropriate force” to defend “foreign or irregular partner forces” from attack, no matter whether the attacker poses a threat to the United States or not.

In a letter to Defense Secretary James Mattis sent Tuesday, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine (D) called the policy “a broad and troubling interpretation” of the president’s war powers, and called on the Pentagon to list its “partner forces” around the world.

Kaine asked whether these partners are vetted to ensure they abide by the Geneva Conventions, who approves the partnership, and how the use of force against their enemies is decided on.

‘Collective self-defense’ was used in Khasham, Syria in February, when US forces pounded Syrian government forces with air and artillery strikes, killing scores of Syrians and allegedly as many as 100 Russian mercenaries. The blitzkrieg was launched after Syrian government forces attacked the headquarters of US-backed opposition fighters in the area. The Syrian soldiers posed no threat to the United States at the time, and were not connected with the 9/11 attacks, but ‘collective self-defense’ was invoked to rubber-stamp their annihilation.

‘War machine can’t run forever’: US military aircraft mishaps up nearly 40 percent over last 5 years

Likewise in Tongo Tongo, Niger, in October 2017. The US’ presence in the African country had gone mostly unnoticed until Islamic State-connected militants ambushed US Special Forces and Nigerien soldiers on a reconnaissance mission. The attack was eventually repelled, but not before four US soldiers lost their lives. While the soldiers naturally returned fire to save their own lives, President Trump told reporters afterwards that he did not “specifically” authorize the mission in Niger, nor would the Pentagon say what the scope of the mission actually was. The authorization to use force was not needed, as ‘collective self-defense’ took care of that.

“I am alarmed that the Department of Defense believes that, by merely designating a group as a partner force, it can respond with military action to protect that partner force,” Virginia Senator Tim Kaine (D) wrote in his letter to Mattis.

Despite his concerns about expanding war powers, Kaine has also sponsored a bipartisan bill to replace the 2001 AUMF. The bill, introduced earlier this year, would define ‘opposition’ and ‘partner’ forces, would repeal the 2002 Iraq War authorization, and would codify the existing conflicts covered by the AUMF into law. Basically, Kaine is fine with the US lending its support to partners, but only with legal backing.

However, the bill would go further than the 2001 Act by enabling the president to declare war simply by giving Congress 48 hours’ notice, expanding the list of people who could be subjected to indefinite detention without trial, and allowing for the targeted assassination of enemies, even within the US.

Kaine’s bill is co-sponsored by Republican Senator Bob Corker (Tennessee), and was introduced this April. Expanding the ‘forever war’ is, seemingly, one of the few things Democrats and Republicans can agree on.

Microsoft Movies & TV App on Xbox and Windows 10 Now Supports Movies Anywhere https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-movies-tv-app-on-xbox-and-windows-10-now-supports-movies-anywhere/ https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-movies-tv-app-on-xbox-and-windows-10-now-supports-movies-anywhere/#respond Sat, 11 Aug 2018 16:44:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/microsoft-movies-tv-app-on-xbox-and-windows-10-now-supports-movies-anywhere/ Movies Anywhere App

Movies Anywhere has become quite the convenient app for streaming most of the digital movies that viewers have acquired over the years. Whether you’ve bought them from iTunes, Amazon Prime, Vudu, Google Play or Fandango NOW, you can access most of your movies purchased on one of those services on each of the others. And now one more digital movie retailer has joined the mix.

The Microsoft Movies & TV app for Xbox and Windows 10 has been added to the line-up of services that will allow your movie library to crossover between other streaming apps. Plus, for viewers who connect their Microsoft account to Movies Anywhere for the first time, they’ll get a free movie to add to their digital collection.

Microsoft announced the new deal with Movies Anywhere earlier this week, which means that you’ll be able to access all your Disney, Sony, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal, and Warner Bros. movies that you’ve purchased in the Microsoft Movies & TV app in iTunes, Amazon Prime, Vudu, Google Play and Fandango NOW, and vice versa. Unfortunately, Paramount Pictures and Lionsgate haven’t yet gotten in on the deal, so those movies won’t crossover between those apps.

If you connect your Microsoft account to Movies Anywhere, you’ll get a free copy of X-Men: Days of Future Past for your digital collection that you’ll be able to access across all the aforementioned apps. To connect your Microsoft account to Movies Anywhere and take advantage of this offer, head over here.

For all you movie collectors out there who want an easy way to share your movie library with friends without having to haul a handful of Blu-rays and DVD to their house, signing up for Movies Anywhere and linking your other digital libraries is a no-brainer. It might sound cheesy, but it’s seriously the easiest way to take your digital movies with you anywhere. If you haven’t yet downloaded the app and connected your accounts, now is the time.

Microsoft’s Movies & TV app for Windows 10 and Xbox now supports the Movies Anywhere service. And for a limited time, if you add your Microsoft account to the Movies Anywhere app, you’ll get a free film.

Movies Anywhere, originally launched by Disney in 2014, brings together movies you’ve bought from a wide range of content providers, including Amazon Video, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu. Rather than having to hunt through different apps (and even different devices) to figure out which service you bought a given film from, Movies Anywhere, means all your films will show up in one app and the app can run on a wide range of devices. The Movies Anywhere app also supports buying from any service that you’ve connected.

Movies Anywhere movies will show up within Microsoft’s Movies & TV apps, even if they were bought on competing platforms. At least, so long as you live in the US, because “anywhere” does not actually mean “anywhere.”

Microsoft rejoins Disney’s Movies Anywhere https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-rejoins-disneys-movies-anywhere/ https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-rejoins-disneys-movies-anywhere/#respond Mon, 06 Aug 2018 19:00:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/microsoft-rejoins-disneys-movies-anywhere/

Microsoft is rejoining Disney’s Movies Anywhere service, so you can again use that app to watch flicks you bought through the Movies & TV store. Movies Anywhere dropped support for the store last year, but it’s returning.

You can watch your purchases from Movies & TV, iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies and more all in the Movies Anywhere app after you’ve linked your various accounts; you can access your Movies Anywhere library on Movies & TV too. Microsoft and Movies Anywhere (which is only available in the US) are also giving away digital copies of X-Men: Days of Future Past for a limited time when you link your Movies & TV account.

You can of course watch Disney flicks on Movies Anywhere, and Sony, 20th Century Fox, Universal and Warner Bros. support the service too, so you’ll be able to purchase and watch most major releases in the app. Meanwhile, Microsoft is said to be working on Movies & TV apps for Android and iOS.

Tesla’s mobile app can turn on top speed limits from anywhere https://briefnews.eu/teslas-mobile-app-can-turn-on-top-speed-limits-from-anywhere/ https://briefnews.eu/teslas-mobile-app-can-turn-on-top-speed-limits-from-anywhere/#respond Thu, 21 Jun 2018 06:31:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/teslas-mobile-app-can-turn-on-top-speed-limits-from-anywhere/

If you’re a little worried about handing over the keys to your Tesla to a valet, then you might be tempted to engage the car’s “Valet Mode,” which limits the speed of the car to 70MPH and tops out the power and acceleration to just 25 percent. But that also locks out the glove compartment and the trunk, and access to certain vehicle settings will be disabled. Now, however, Tesla’s latest software update will now let you adjust the top speed of your car with a specific speed limiter feature, and directly from your mobile app.

According to the update, this speed limiter feature will let you “limit vehicle speed and acceleration with speed limit mode” and that the maximum vehicle speed can be set between 50 to 90 mph. So if you’re concerned about little Timmy Junior putting the pedal to metal but you don’t want to go full Valet Mode on him, then this might be a good way to control the speeds without locking him out of the rest of the car’s features, for example.

There are other companies that allow a similar Valet Mode feature. Corvette, for example, has one that locks down your infotainment system, but also has a Performance Data Recorder tech that apparently records what’s going on in your car while someone else is driving it, which is legally problematic in some states. Tesla’s Valet Mode, however, supposedly doesn’t have such a recording feature.

The software update for the speed limiter mode is rolling out starting today, and will gradually be available to the whole fleet.

Riverdale season 2: Is THIS why the show couldn’t air anywhere else? 'TV is catching up' https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-2-is-this-why-the-show-couldnt-air-anywhere-else-tv-is-catching-up/ https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-2-is-this-why-the-show-couldnt-air-anywhere-else-tv-is-catching-up/#respond Sat, 05 May 2018 04:55:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-2-is-this-why-the-show-couldnt-air-anywhere-else-tv-is-catching-up/

An Archie Comics adaptation was always going to be a tough sell for TV viewers, but somehow The CW managed to pull it off.

By maintaining an emphasis on character progression and a cinematic style, the show set itself apart from others – and with the teen drama finishing its second season this month fans must be enjoying it.

It has even received its own comic book spin-off titled “Riverdale” which fills in the gaps missed by the TV show.

One of these comics is available for free this Saturday May 5 to mark the annual Free Comic Book Day.

And Riverdale is bringing some much needed diversity to screens, says Dark Side Comics owner Holly Ringsell.

While Archie Comics began building its iconic characters in 1939 they have been modernised in The CW’s TV show.

And Holly says it couldn’t have come any sooner.

“Out of the comic-based shows that I watch,” she says. “That I know of, Riverdale is probably the best for queer representation.”

Holly started Dark Side Comics five years ago and has endeavoured to set a good example for the next generation of comic fans.

In addition, Diamond Distributors’ global Free Comic Book Day gives comic publishers a platform to show off new diverse and inclusive stories.

“It’s a celebration,” Holly continued. “It is inclusive of everyone – it should be about introducing new people [to the culture] and celebrating with old readers.”

Holly proposes shows such as Riverdale would struggle to find a home anywhere other than streaming services such as The CW and Netflix.

She explained: “They take a step in the right direction. Streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime are probably going to be where the diversity is.

“They’re going to have a bigger range of directors and creators working for them who will bring a different range of materials to the table.

“Amazon have Preacher as well – and stuff like Preacher is aired in the US on AMC.

“But [in England] I can’t imagine something like Preacher or even Riverdale landing on any of our traditional TV channels.

“And I think you can see that traditional TV is trying to play catch up.”

But with female-led dramas such as The Split finding their spot in the BBC, could things be beginning to change?

Riverdale continues Thursday on Netflix

Dark Side Comics is a family-friendly, all-inclusive comic shop in Chelmsford, Essex. Holly is the brightly-coloured, Riverdale and diversity enthusiast at its core.
