During the Emmerdale Christmas special, dubbed ‘Groundhog Day meets a Christmas Carol’, Robert Sugden (played by Ryan Hawley) found himself recovering from being run down by Lawrence White (John Bowe). 

Robert found himself coming around in various scenarios, unable to work out which of them were real. 

However, he found himself in his worst nightmare when he woke up in the middle of Aaron Dingle’s (Danny Miller) funeral. 

As Aaron’s hearse drove past, Robert was greeted by a ghost from Emmerdale’s past – the legendary Val Pollard (Charlie Hardwick).

Val was famously decapitated in a mirror maze when a helicopter crashed into the Yorkshire village as a result of Chrissie White’s (Louise Marwood) revenge against Robert. 

As a “moral guardian to Robert”, Val warned the Emmerdale bad boy: “You’re bad, you do bad stuff. You do bad stuff, it hurts people.”

She then urged Robert to let Aaron go as he continues to cause his former husband nothing but misery. 

Actress Charlie has now spilled all about her surprising return, revealing she had to keep her welcomed cameo unbelievably close to her chest. 

“It was very hard to keep it a secret, as during my time on the show I never blabbed about anything,” she said. “And in fact I always hated any show spoilers.”

“But because we were keeping this a secret for the first time ever, I wanted to tell everybody about it. I wanted to say, ‘Watch on Christmas Day, I’m going to be on’ but I couldn’t tell anybody about it. The irony!”

She continued to Digital Spy: “My overwhelming feeling of the day being back at Emmerdale was how much I love it and how much I miss it. I know I made the right decision to leave, but it was a real treat to be able to relive it all again. 

“After ten minutes back, it was like I’d never been away and I was bossing everybody around.

“It was lovely to be there, it was genuinely lovely and it was a treat and a real privilege to get the chance after her demise to go back and see people one more time. This time I really got the chance to say proper goodbyes without the whole leaving bit.”

Emmerdale continues tomorrow at 6.10pm on ITV.

Bill O’Reilly has more to say about why Fox News let him go.

The former O’Reilly Factor host, who was ousted from the network in April after a series of sexual harassment allegations were filed against him, spoke with Matt Lauer on Tuesday’s Today about the firing, calling the Fox News dismissal a “business decision.”

“They had a contractual clause that they could pay me a certain amount of money and not put me on air. And they exercised that clause,” O’Reilly told Lauer. “There are billions of dollars at stake, and they made a business decision that they could possibly prosper more without me. It was as simple as that.”

O’Reilly stood by his original post-firing statement that he did “absolutely nothing wrong” at the network, adding that “not in 42 years… did I have any interaction with HR or any complaints filed against [me].”

Upon being asked if he’s done some soul-searching in the five months since his firing, O’Reilly put the focus instead on one of the women who accused him of harassment, who was also arrested in 2015 for filing a false police report.

“It goes to credibility, doesn’t it?” he said. “This was a hit job. A political and financial hit job.”

Before the Q&A turned to O’Reilly’s new book Killing England, Lauer asked the onetime host if there were any “self-inflicted wounds” that led to his departure from Fox News.

“Nobody’s a perfect person,” O’Reilly said, “but I can go to sleep at night very well, knowing that I never mistreated anyone on my watch in 42 years.”

The number of people going to A&E following a stroke has increased by over 30 per cent since 2009, according to new estimates from the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

However the number of people dying in the UK after suffering a stroke has remained stubbornly high – with numbers remaining largely unchanged in the last five years.

Russell Hanford had a stroke when he was 35, and has been left without the ability to speak.

His wife Rachel has since become his voice.

“Most people see strokes as a thing that happens to older people, but Russell is proof that it can happen to anyone,” she said.

“No-one expects to be left without a voice at the age of 35.

“It’s so important that we find new ways to treat people who have had a stroke.”

The BHF warns that more research is urgently needed to find better ways to prevent and treat the disease.

Only one drug, alteplase, is currently approved to treat stroke in the UK and for some types of stroke there is no proven treatment.

What is a stroke?

The two most common types of stroke are ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke.

Ischaemic strokes happen when the artery that supplies blood to your brain is blocked, for example by a blood clot.

Haemorrhagic strokes happen when a blood vessel bursts and bleeds into your brain, damaging brain tissue and starving some of your brain cells of blood and oxygen.

SYMPTOMS OF A STROKE

Stroke treatment

Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation, said: “This year in the UK around 40,000 people will die after having had a stroke, while 1.2 million people are living with the cruel and debilitating after-effects of this devastating disease.

“Although some exciting new developments have been made in stroke treatment, the options at our disposal for treating stroke patients are still far too limited.

“We urgently need to fund more research to better understand what causes a stroke so that we can prevent them occurring and develop new treatments for all types of stroke, in order to save more lives.”

Currently, the BHF is funding 31 research projects worth £16.5 million pounds looking into the causes of stroke and looking to develop new treatments for those affected.

For example, BHF-funded researchers at the Universities of Edinburgh and Nottingham are conducting a clinical trial of drugs they believe could offer a new treatment for lacunar stroke.

Lacunar stroke

Lacunar stroke accounts for around one in five strokes and has no proven treatment.

It is caused by damage to one of the small vessels deep within the brain that affects the flow of blood and can lead to long-term disability.

Professor Joanna Wardlaw, chair of Applied Neuroimaging at the University of Edinburgh, leading the research, said: “It’s very clear that lacunar strokes can cause strategic brain damage, affecting thinking ability, balance and the way people walk.

“With this in mind, there is a strong link between this type of stroke and dementia.

“This trial is important as it’s one of the first looking into treatments for this particular type of stroke.

“Following treatment with these drugs, we’ll be monitoring how the blood vessels are changing and seeing if they improve the outcomes of patients that have suffered a lacunar stroke.”
