James Martin welcomed a host of guests on to his ITV Saturday Morning cooking show which aired a festive edition on Christmas Day. The TV chef prepared a Christmassy dessert for Chris Evans and Denise van Outen but changed his mind when the pair cheekily criticised how long the dish took to make.

Turning to Denise, James began: “This is a dish that when I knew you were coming for Christmas I thought I’m going to do a dish that I got from New York because you were on Broadway.

“I’m going to do a dish that comes from slightly around the corner from there and it comes from this amazing bakery where I learnt this dish called the monkey bread. 

“Now I’ve done this before on TV but I’ve never done it with this ice cream.

“We’re going to make a chocolate bar ice cream in my Christmas present to myself.”

“We’ve seen it,” Chris commented. “We all want one, don’t we Denise?”

“Yes, a nice bit of kit,” she replied. 

James began preparing the desert and made a special vegan version for Chris but the TV chef kept being interrupted by his guests’ cheeky comments. 

When it was time to make the ice cream, James said: “This is the only time I’m going to get them both to be quiet.

“This is my little Christmas present to myself, [inside] is a vegan ice cream with chocolate bars in it, frozen solid. 

“Put it in this machine and there’s a blade that sits underneath and the blade goes all the way down and back up again.”

“Now we’re with you,” Chris said and Denise echoed: “I’m with you, I can’t even speak.”

“Oh you’re back in the room now, are you?” James asked.

Earlier in the show, James quizzed Denise on performing in her cabaret show during the coronavirus pandemic.  

Denise said: “We’re very lucky with the cabaret show in London because it’s a restaurant setting so even in Tier two, three we could still open and perform and it did really well.”

“We’ve had acts from Cirque du Soleil, Moulin Rouge, all the Vegas showgirls. 

“I absolutely love it, I thrive off of it, I chat to the audience, I compére the evening, I sing, then the acts perform while I sing.”

“It’s quite spectacular, it’s lovely. I really enjoy it,” she added.

Denise went on to discuss her upcoming Dancing On Ice stint, she said: “I’ve got to be honest I’ve watched the show for many years with my daughter.

“She loves it at her age, it’s magical. I always said I’d never do it because I’m too scared.

“I did Strictly in 2012 and I loved it and it was hard but this is a million times harder.

“It doesn’t matter how good you are at dancing it’s all about your balance and losing the fear really.”

James Martin’s Saturday Morning continues on ITV on Boxing Day at 10.40am.

Canadian academic and internet sensation Jordan Peterson has shot back at Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek’s recent criticisms of him. Apparently he wants to chat, heralding in a long-awaited debate between the two thinkers.

During an appearance at the Cambridge Union last month, Zizek savaged the Canadian’s “pseudo-scientific references” and purported inability to speak “about women and marriage with mentioning lobsters, apes or whatever.” Zizek’s comments elicited laughter from his audience, but apparently, Peterson doesn’t find his comments very funny.

“Any time, any place, Mr. Zizek,” Peterson tweeted on Monday, attaching a link to RT’s write-up of Zizek’s provocative remarks.

His tweet launched a barrage of meme-stuffed tweets, with many suggesting that a Peterson vs. Zizek matchup would be the best UFC fight ever – or at least a memorable battle of the minds. Peterson is an outspoken critic of the left and what he terms “cultural Marxism,” while Zizek is known for his radical left views.

“Live on pay per view! In a steel cage!” one Twitter user joked.

Meanwhile, some have apparently started taking bets.

“Zizek’s room is cleaner than yours. He will destroy you,” one netizen tweeted back at Jordan, alluding to the Canadian’s well-known advocacy for orderliness.

Others have questioned whether a Peterson-Zizek debate would even accomplish anything.

“They’ll talk past each other, no one will have their minds changed and both sides will claim to have ‘won’ regardless of what actually gets said. Maybe I’m just a pessimist, and I don’t think some sort of engagement between the two would be totally worthless, but I don’t think a traditional debate-format would be all that great,” a Reddit user wrote about the hypothetical clash of intellects.

Peterson has previously expressed interest in going toe-to-toe with Zizek. In late November he told an audience in Slovenia that “it would be very interesting” to have a discussion with Zizek. “Perhaps if that can be arranged that could happen,” he added.

Before that, Peterson had challenged Zizek to expand on “the validity of my ‘apparently’ scientific theories.” The angry barrage of tweets were mistakenly directed at a Zizek quote bot on Twitter, however.

Cellebrite, the Israel-based forensics company that has been a key source for law enforcement in efforts to crack the security of mobile devices to recover evidence, has reportedly found a way to unlock Apple devices using all versions of the iOS operating system up to version 11.2.6, the most recent update pushed out to customers by Apple. The capability is part of Cellebrite’s Advanced Unlocking and Extraction Services, a lab-based service the company provides to law enforcement agencies—not a software product.

But security experts are dubious of any claim that Cellebrite can defeat the encryption used by iOS to protect the contents of Apple devices. Rather, they suggest Cellebrite’s “Advanced Unlocking Services” may have found a way to bypass the limits on PIN or password entry enforced by interfering with the code that counts the number of failed attempts—allowing the company’s lab to launch a brute-force attack to try to discover the passcode without fear of the device erasing its cryptographic key and rendering the phone unreadable. With a sufficiently secure password, it would be nearly impossible for the technique to recover the contents of the device.

Forbes’ Thomas Fox-Brewster reports that a Cellebrite spokesperson confirmed the claim, first found in leaked Cellebrite marketing material, stating that “Cellebrite can retrieve (without needing to root or jailbreak the device) the full file system to recover downloaded emails, third-party application data, geolocation data and system logs. Agencies can either provide the device already unlocked, furnish the known passcode, or use Cellebrite’s Advanced Unlocking Services to unlock the device.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions cracked a few jokes to a crowd and referenced the ongoing Russia probe that has loomed over President Donald Trump’s first year in office during a speech to the Federalist Society in Washington on Friday.

“Is Ambassador Kislyak in the room,” Sessions quipped to the audience. “Before I get started here, any Russians?”

“Anybody been to Russia,” Sessions continued, as the crowd erupted in laughter. “Got a cousin in Russia or something.”

Sessions’ joke comes days after he was grilled by lawmakers during a House Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday. During the testimony, he addressed previous statements he made earlier this year regarding his recollection of contacts between members of the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

Sessions recused himself from the federal investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 US presidential election, which focuses in part on whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin.

It was previously discovered that Sessons had at least two talks with former Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak during the 2016 election cycle. Lawmakers have criticized Sessions, who testified during his confirmation hearing in January that he had no communication with Russian officials during the campaign.

Spencer said he would follow directions from the president on transgender people in the military but believes “any patriot” should be allowed to serve.

Spencer, speaking to reporters on Thursday on a visit to Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia, said he would abide by any policy the Pentagon provides to the armed forces on the transgender issue.

However, Spencer said he believes that, on a fundamental basis, “any patriot that wants to serve and meets all the requirements should be able to serve in our military,” according to news reports.

President Donald Trump announced on Twitter last month that he would ban transgender people from serving in the military “in any capacity,” reviving a ban that had ended in 2016.

Trump’s announcement created vast uncertainty for active-duty and reserve transgender service members, who say they number in the thousands. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a memo a day after Trump’s tweet that there would be no change in policy until Defense Secretary James Mattis received an official order from the president. That order has not been issued.

A week after the announcement, the US Coast Guard commandant, Admiral Paul Zukunft, offered support for transgender members of his service.

On Wednesday, five transgender members of the US military, including Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, sued Trump over the transgender ban, saying he made the announcement without consulting senior military commanders.

“We must expect further attacks by individuals or terror groups,” the Bundesamt fur Verfassungsschutz (BfV) chief, Hans-Georg Maassen said Tuesday. “Islamist terrorism is the biggest challenge facing the BfV and we see it as one of the biggest threats facing the internal security of Germany.”

The statement followed the agency publishing its annual report on constitution protection and threats to the state. It said some 24,400 Islamists remain in Germany, including around 10,000 Salafists, an ultra-conservative movement within Sunni Islam, followers of which have been prone to terrorism.

“The attacks have substantiated the IS threat scenario in Germany. IS can be held responsible for all attacks mounted in Germany in 2016,” the report reads. “Germany is the focus of Islamist terrorism. Terrorist incidents are possible in Germany at any time in the future.”

Maassen said jihadists managed to carry out five attacks in 2016 while security services thwarted another seven.

The report classified the 2016 attacks in Germany as part of whats been termed, “phenomenon of the individual jihad,” acts which are committed by individuals or “micro groups.”

Germany is currently monitoring some 680 Islamist radicals who could potentially carry out an attack, according to Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere.

The intelligent assessment said young people remain vulnerable to terrorist recruitment schemes as the youth “are particularly susceptible to jihadist propaganda, especially spread via social media.”

The report noted that the younger generation can easily be indoctrinated to “develop a readiness to consequently obey the order to kill unbelievers.”

New potential terrorists “possibly entering Europe under cover as part of the migration movement” as well as those returning from war zones in Syria and Iraq, remain under the radar of the security agencies, the report notes.

Maassen estimated that some 930 people left Germany to fight in Syria or Iraq, 20 percent of whom were women. From that number, the BfV chief believes 145 people have been killed in action.

Besides the jihadist and Islamist terrorism threat, the constitution protection report also analyzed the activities of various other groups, including far-right and far-left extremists.

With far-right extremism on the surge, events “directly or indirectly associated with Islam” have been frequently exploited by far-right sympathizers, the report notes. Last year, those accounted for 23,100 members while the number of violent offenses rose to 1,600. More than a half of those crimes particularly targeted asylum seekers and accommodation facilities.

Security has been stepped up in Germany following five lone-wolf terror attacks in the country last year. The most noted attack happened in December 2016, when a Tunisian asylum seeker, who pledged allegiance to Islamic State, plowed a truck into a Berlin Christmas market, killing 12 people.

Germany is now focussing all its efforts on this weekend’s G20 summit in Hamburg where around 20,000 security officers have been deployed.

The French Tennis Federation denied Maria Sharapova a wild card entry for the French Open on Tuesday, citing a need to “protect the game” following Sharapova’s doping scandal.

Federation president Bernard Giudicelli said that although Sharapova has already returned from a 15-month suspension for testing positing for a banned substance, there “cannot be a wild card for players returning from doping.”

“I decided not to give a wild card,” Giudicelli said. “Nobody can deprive her of her two titles here and I’m very sorry for Maria. I’m very sorry for her fans. They might be disappointed. She might be very disappointed.

“She had committed a violation of the tennis program and had to be suspended for 15 months. Today this is over, she can take her path. But if there can be a wild card for people returning from injuries, there cannot be a wild card for players returning from doping.”

Sharapova returned from her 15-month suspension in April, reaching the semifinals at the Porsche Grand Prix, but only making it to the second round at the Madrid Open. She is currently ranked 211th, thus not being able to reach the French Open without a wild card.

As Deadspin’s Laura Wagner notes, Serena Williams will miss the French Open while pregnant and Roger Federer recently announced he would miss the tournament. Sharapova would have provided a needed dose of star power, but instead, the French Tennis Federation is making a somewhat odd choice to retroactively punish Sharapova.
