The funds were earlier frozen as part of the review initiated by US President Donald Trump that should have determined whether Pakistan is showing enough resilience against the insurgents to be worthy of American assistance.

Falkner pointed out that the cancellation of the aid package, which was part of the so-called Coalition Support Funds (CSF), is not the first that the Trump administration has pushed through. Earlier, US lawmakers moved to cancel another $ 500 million in CSF aid to Pakistan, meaning the country will be short a total of $ 800 million in earmarked aid.

This is in addition to the suspension of $ 255 million in foreign military financing (FMF) to Pakistan, which was initially authorized by the State Department in August last year.

By curtailing a total of over a billion dollars of assistance to Pakistan, Washington is following through on Trump’s pledge to minimize financial contributions to the country, which he accused of shielding terrorists.

In an emotionally charged tweet marking the beginning of the new year, Trump lamented that the US “has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit.” The US leader then accused Islamabad of giving refuge to terrorists that flee from Afghanistan.

The January broadside by Trump was met with indignation in Pakistan, its government rejecting the allegations and threatening to cease cooperation altogether. “We do not have any alliance. This is not how allies behave,” Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said at the time.   

While Trump might have declared open season on Pakistan, ordering a freeze on most of the security assistance to the country, the US has long been complaining about Islamabad’s misbehavior, and cutting funding. The Obama administration scaled aid back from $ 2.177 billion allocated in 2014 to $ 1.118 billion in 2016.

The release of the CSF package is conditional to Pakistan’s logistical support of the US-led military operation in the region, primarily against the Afghan Taliban and its affiliate Haqqani network, a Sunni Islamist group that is believed to enjoy support from some elements within Pakistan’s security forces.

The move comes ahead of a visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Pakistan on September 5, when he is expected to underscore the need to fight externally oriented terrorists in his meeting with new Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Khan has been known as a staunch opponent of the US, criticizing Washington for linking foreign aid to Pakistan’s cooperation in the fight against insurgents. He has been compared to Trump for his non-political background and authoritarian inclinations, and once vowed to shoot down US drones flying over Pakistani territory.

Khan has recently hinted at rapprochement with India, however, offering a dialogue on the most pressing issues, such as the territorial dispute over Kashmir.

With Pakistan’s relationship with the US seemingly souring, Russia has shown an interest in stepping up cooperation with the new government. Last month, Russia and Pakistan signed a rare agreement that allows Pakistani troops to train at Russian facilities.

Born in 1984 in the city of Voronezh, 465km south of Moscow, Filipov graduated from the Krasnodar Military Aviation School. He then served in the Russian Far East, progressing from senior pilot to deputy commander of the squadron.

In Syria, Filipov successfully conducted dozens of military operations, eliminating terrorist groups and escorting humanitarian convoys to liberated areas. His commanders described Maj. Filipov as a promising, calm and resolute attack pilot.

In February this year, Filipov had his Su-25 jet shot down by terrorists in Syria’s Idlib province. He ejected safely but landed in a terrorist-controlled area. As militants rushed to the downed pilot, Filipov engaged in a gun battle. Photos posted online show he possibly emptied as many as two magazines in the process. The pilot was gravely wounded, but as the militants surrounded him, he set off a hand grenade, shouting “This is for the boys!”

The Russian Defense Ministry posthumously awarded Filipov with the country’s highest award – the Hero of Russia title and the Gold Star medal. He was buried in his native city of Voronezh in a honorary place at a local cemetery. One of the Su-25 aircraft of the regiment where Filipov served was also named after the hero.

According to Russian media reports, Roman Filipov is survived by his wife and daughter.

Several blocks around the iconic Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona have been sealed off by the police, who have also shut down the nearby metro station, in what they say is an anti-terrorist operation.

Eyewitnesses reported armed police looking through bins, as they told shopkeepers to close their businesses.

An explosives unit was called up to conduct checks on a suspicious van parked in the vicinity of the Antonio Gaudi-designed church, the police said in a statement on its Twitter feed.

At least 16 victims and eight suspected Islamic terrorists died in a series of attacks through the region of Catalonia last month. The worst of these happened in the city’s main street of La Rambla, where a rented van mowed down pedestrians, killing 15 and injuring more than 130 others.

Local media reported that the attackers had planned to set off homemade explosive charges near the UNESCO-listed landmark, but were dissuaded when two of them died in an accidental blast days before the attack.

The ‘anti-terrorism’ or ‘defence’ training camps for tourists could offer a new experience for travellers when in the country.

The Israeli Ministry of Tourism (IMOT) is working with Indian travel agencies to create the bizarre tourist attraction.

It is certainly a contentious topic, especially in light of the heightened fear surrounding certain countries that Britons frequently visit.

Israel is just one of the countries to have suffered under recent terrorist attacks, with other destinations such as Spain and France having been attacked earlier this year.

Hasan Madah, director of IMOT, India, said: “It’s a niche concept. There are many tourists from the US and Europe who are interested to learn how people defend themselves and things about warfare  because the reputation of Israeli security is very high.”

“They want to know how to shoot, how to hide, how to tackle. It’s similar to paintball.

“Some people like to relax and some people like to get things done, so why not? 

“We are exploring all (tourism) angles with travel agents in India. We are interested in promoting anything that brings in all tourists.”

Officials from IMOT were in India for a six-city roadshow which included 100 travel agents from across the region to discuss how to increase tourism and trade.

Madah even credited the recent popularity of Gal Gadot, who plays Wonder Woman for increased interest in the region, due to her Israeli nationality.

She was also conscripted into the Israeli army for two years previous to her acting career.

Madah stated: “She is kind of an ambassador. She is promoting and also helping us through that.”

Dominic Cooper has been doing excellent work in the greatly-improved second season of AMC’s TV adaptation of the Preacher comic series, but the former Howard Stark actor has another adaptation lined up – and this one’s on the big screen. He plays an MI6 agent in Stratton, an action thriller from Con Air director Simon West that’s based on a popular series of novels, and a trailer for the film has arrived.

This Stratton trailer was just uploaded to Vertigo Releasing’s YouTube channel, but it’s actually a revamped version of an international trailer that came out about a year ago. Back then, I noticed something totally ridiculous snuck into the final edit of the trailer, and that has somehow made it through again here: at the thirty second mark, Wonder Woman star Connie Nielsen’s MI6 character introduces the film’s villain as “the most dangerous man I’ve ever met,” and we cut to this supposedly terrifying man repeatedly punching a guy who’s strapped to a chair. But if you look closely, you’ll notice that he’s very obviously not making contact and the guy in the chair is just wildly throwing his head back as if he’s been punched in the jaw.

“That’s called acting,” some of you will surely say. But the idea that West – who is at least a capable director, though maybe not a standout one – chose to shoot that sequence from this angle instead of how every other fight scene in Hollywood is shot (read: where you can hide the fact that the actors aren’t really punching each other) doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence that this is going to be a good movie. If this is the best they have for the trailer, I cringe at what else might make the final cut.

Add to that the generic plot, flat cinematography, and questionable dialogue, and Stratton looks like it might be something I end up watching on an airplane than something I go out of my way to catch in theaters. This film is based on a series of books by author Duncan Falconer, so maybe those of you who’ve read any of those could chime in and let us know if this looks like an accurate adaptation.

Stratton will hit theaters in the United Kingdom on September 1, but the movie doesn’t have a U.S. release date yet.

The terrorist group “exports a new model of extremist and terrorist activity from the battle zones [in Syria and Iraq] to the Central Asian states,” he said, as cited by TASS. He particularly emphasized that the growing Taliban activity in the northern regions of Afghanistan, bordering the Central Asian, states could be indicative of some Taliban commanders switching their allegiance and joining Islamic State.

Novikov drew attention to the fact that the Taliban never laid claim to territories outside Afghanistan, while Islamic State in 2015 announced the creation of a new “province” with a center in Afghanistan that should also have included the territories of the Central Asian states.

“Analysis of the military clashes [in Afghanistan]… brings up the issue of the [local] militants adopting not only the strategy, but also tactical military concepts, which were previously typical for Islamic State,” he said. He added that Afghan extremists are now also trying to seize large settlements and then take the surrounding territory under control, thus preparing a bridgehead for further expansion.

At the same time, Islamic State fighters are engaged in a bitter confrontation with some Taliban forces over control over some Afghan territories.

“In the medium term, Islamic State set a goal of expanding its influence in the northern regions of Afghanistan and gaining access to the border regions of the Central Asian states as well as to the Chinese Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region,” Novikov concluded.

More than 7,000 citizens of member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States are now wanted for terrorism-related activities, including the more than 2,000 who are fighting for terrorist organizations as mercenaries, the ATC head pointed out.

On June 20, the Pentagon issued a report, in which it said Afghanistan is “at a critical point” in its battle against multiple insurgencies and terrorist groups. It also revealed that US and Afghan authorities are now seeking peace through talks with the Taliban.

The US defense department conceded that sixteen years after the US-led invasion, Afghanistan still faces a “continuing threat” from as many as 20 insurgent and terrorist networks, calling it “the highest concentration of extremist and terrorist groups in the world.”

The US currently has 8,400 troops in the country, conducting “training, advising and assisting” of Afghan security forces as well as counterterrorism operations against ISIS, Al-Qaeda and other terrorist formations.

‘US gave ISIS escape route from Mosul to Syria; now civilians are paying the price’

Under a 2015 law, Australia may strip dual nationals of their citizenship if they have carried out terrorist acts or been members of a banned organization.

Sharrouf, the son of Lebanese immigrants, went to fight for Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Syria in 2013, a year after being released from prison for taking part in a terrorist plot.

In 2014, horrifying photographs emerged on Twitter showing Sharrouf and his 7-year-old son holding up the chopped off heads of Syrian soldiers, with the caption “That’s my boy!”

In 2015, unconfirmed reports emerged claiming that Sharrouf had been killed in a drone strike in Mosul in northern Iraq, but he is still the subject of an active arrest warrant.

Last year, Sharrouf’s widow, Tara Nettleton, a mother-of-five who was living in Raqqa with four of her children and one grandchild, died in Syria, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
