Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes aren’t really friends or partners — they’re more like co-workers — but the dynamic pairing is about to embark on their most intimate journey yet. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, premiering Friday, March 19 on Disney+, will see the superhero duo look inward while tackling a new threat that sends them across the globe.

In the wake of the events of Avengers: Endgame, in which Steve Rogers handed Sam the Cap’s shield, Sam (played by Anthony Mackie) has to decide whether or not he will take up the mantle of Captain America. It’s a heavy choice to make, one that will have the winged hero questioning what it means to be a Black superhero in a post-Rogers world itching for someone new to step up and fill the void.

For head writer Malcolm Spellman, who also executive-produced all six episodes, the Marvel series is an opportunity for fans to get to know the Air Force veteran on a deeper level.

Anthony Mackie in Falcon and the Winter Solider“There’s a long legacy of Black folk who come from [the same stock as Sam], and that informs his worldview,” Spellman tells TVLine. “When you see these unique scenes that he has confronting these villains, and you see him respond in a way that isn’t typical for a superhero, the audience now will have a deeper understanding as to how because they got to spend time in his personal life. We stole a lot of [Anthony Mackie’s] personal life for Sam.”

The Disney+ series will also explore what life looks like for Bucky (played by Sebastian Stan), who doesn’t really have his longtime friend to lean on and is struggling with the trauma of being a formerly brainwashed assassin forced to kill over the course of decades.

“Bucky showed up with more baggage than any hero in Marvel history, and we took all that baggage and distilled it down to a single storyline and a single character that he’s dealing with,” Spellman explains. “If he fails, he is the monster that he worries he might be. And if he succeeds, he’s reborn as someone that might actually be worthy of the shield and the praise that Steve used to get, and becoming a hero in his own right. Because in Bucky’s mind, he’s never been a hero.”

Stan adds that “Bucky is going to have to come out of his shell and learn to accept the past and move forward and get to know the world as it is. Who else could better introduce him to that than Sam Wilson?”

Bucky and Sam are polar opposites who don’t exactly get along — Bucky is a somewhat glum centenarian, while Sam is very much a man of this time — but they still share a few common threads, such as their friendship with Steve Rogers. According to Mackie, they’re also intelligent men with the sense to keep up with the changing times.

“Both characters, coming from where they came from and being the men that they are, realize that the world has changed and evolved,” Mackie says. “The Blip has put us in a position where we no longer are accessible to the way of thinking that was before. That’s what gave us Thanos. So both characters are smart enough to know that the future is different, and they’ve always been progressive enough to see that and move along with [it].”

Stan is looking forward to fans getting to know the Falcon and the Winter Soldier far better than they ever could in the Captain America and Avengers films, and to “spend a day in the life of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes as we haven’t seen… That actually ends up being much more relatable than all those epic times you’ve met them in the movies.”

This Friday on Hawaii Five-0 (CBS, 8/7c), Adam’s steamy shower with Tamiko (wait, what?) is rudely interrupted by some very dirty business involving Yakuza rivals. TVLine spoke with Ian Anthony Dale about Adam’s rule-bending rampage….

TVLINE | Tell us a bit about what sets Adam’s odyssey in motion this Friday night.
Well, as we’ll quickly learn in the opening teaser, the relationship between Adam and Tamiko (played by Runaways‘ Brittany Ishibashi) has advanced considerably. If you’ve been paying close attention, you know we’ve had a couple of scenes throughout Season 10 which sort of allude to the development of the relationship, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen it progress to the stage that it is here. That might come as a surprise, particularly to diehard fans of the Adam and Kono relationship, but yeah, things are getting hot and heavy. They are then surprised by some intruders who create havoc for both Tamiko and Adam, and that sets Adam off on a journey. It’s the beginning of what has been a really exciting serialized arc.

TVLINE | The sticky wicket, of course, is that Adam can’t involve Five-0.
Exactly. He’s sort of between a rock and hard place. Trouble typically seems to find Adam, and it’s found him once again in this episode. We’ve come to know Adam as someone who sometimes doesn’t make the most rational decisions, but here he is following his passion and that’s what leads him on this Man on Fire journey in this episode. He’s desperate to save his love, and he won’t let anything get in the way of that.

Hawaii Five-0 10x10TVLINE | In a handful of episodes over the past season or so, you’ve established a certain dynamic between Adam and Tamiko’s father, Masuda (Sonny Saito). How would you describe it to date, and where is it heading?
I mean, it’s a bit testy between Adam and Masuda. And what Adam doesn’t want to necessarily admit is that Masuda has these theories about how Adam can’t escape his past, how he can’t ignore who he truly is. In Masuda’s opinion, Adam is someone who belongs in the Yakuza. Masuda has sort of had an eye on Adam as a potential protégé, if you will, someone who could ultimately replace him and take over the family business one day, but as we know, Adam’s been fighting against that part of his persona for years. Because of the events that happen in this episode, Adam is confronted by this ultimate prospect of giving into, I guess, the “fate” that has been predetermined for him. I think the audience will be very surprised about the decision that Adam ultimately makes.

TVLINE | How would you tease the final scenes of this week’s episode?
Well, Adam enters into this Man on Fire, stop-at-nothing journey to get Tamiko back, but I don’t think he ever intended for it to get as dark and twisted — to get to a point of no return — that it ultimately does. He has to go to the extremest of measures in order to ensure his, and more importantly Tamiko’s, safety moving forward.

TVLINE | When did [showrunner] Peter [Lenkov] first tell you this arc was coming up? 
I had the good fortune to go to the Monte Carlo Television Festival during the hiatus, and before I went I called Peter to say, “Hey, what can I tease to the press about the upcoming season?” That’s when he told me I would be going on a journey not unlike Denzel Washington in Man on Fire. So when I got the script for this first episode, I was beyond excited. Even without having seen [the final cut] but just knowing how it felt filming it, I would say this is one of my favorite episodes in the history of my time on the show.

CNN and HBO Max are cooking up a profile of a beloved TV chef: A feature-length documentary about Anthony Bourdain is in development, TVLine has learned, and will air on CNN and stream on HBO Max following a theatrical run.

Documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville (Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, 20 Feet From Stardom) will direct and produce the untitled project, which will be distributed theatrically by Focus Features. The film will chronicle the life of Bourdain, from renowned chef to tell-all book author to TV host, with his estate providing family photos, home movies and more.

“It requires a filmmaker as expert and prolific as Morgan Neville to capture the essence of a raconteur and world explorer like Anthony Bourdain,” HBO Max head of original content Sarah Aubrey said in a statement. “We are honored to partner with CNN Films and Focus Features on this project that is so close to all of our hearts and give viewers the opportunity to celebrate his legacy.”

Prior to his death by suicide last year, Bourdain hosted CNN’s food-focused travel series Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, starting in 2013. He also hosted Travel Channel’s Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and appeared often as a guest judge on Bravo’s Top Chef.

Power‘s LaKeisha may not be making the best choices this season — see also: ditching a murder weapon in the Hudson River — but, La La Anthony asks, who hasn’t done really stupid things for love?

“All she wants to do is prove to Tommy that she’s ride-or-die, and she’s in it until the end,” Anthony tells TVLine, “but I don’t think she really understands what that means until she’s so far in that you’ve just got to stay at that point.”

This Sunday’s episode (Starz, 8/7c) will find Cash’s mom continuing her education in the drug business, courtesy of boyfriend Tommy. And though Keisha might have an inkling of what Tommy does to keep her in designer purses and such, “she’s naive about it,” Anthony says. “She knows it’s a drug game, but she doesn’t know the ins and outs or the murders and different things that happen.” She refers to the scene in a previous season where Tasha asked her man if he’d ever killed anyone, and was relieved to hear him say no. (As we all know, Tommy was lying. A lot.)

“You see a lot of doubt,” Anthony adds, previewing episodes to come. “But then she pushes through it, because she ultimately just wants this happy family.”

Series boss Courtney Kemp observes that there’s a sharp, telling distinction between LaKeisha and her former bestie, Tasha — though a lot of people miss it.

“The characterization of Tasha as ride-or-die I always find really interesting, because she never was,” the EP says. When Ghost said he didn’t want to be a drug dealer anymore, for instance, “She’s like, ‘Shut up, move weight,’” Kemp says. “Everyone’s like, ‘Tasha’s his ride-or-die.’ I’m like, ‘No. To ride is like, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore’ and you’re like, ‘Cool, I got you.’ She was like, ‘Stay with the program. This is the program.’ LaKeisha is much more like, ‘OK, if this is the program, this is what I’m going to do… If I can help you, I’m staying.’”

But that degree of loyalty may have its price: Anthony hints that later on this season, Tasha will “a hundred percent” have to cross barriers that she’s set up for herself. “And then it’s interesting to see: How far will she go before she either goes too far or decides, ‘I can’t do this anymore?’”

Or, as Kemp succinctly warns: “The riding and the dying could both take place. Or not.”

The stunning report comes from NBA expert Adrian Wojnarowski, who spoke to Paul about Davis’ desire to leave.

He wrote on Twitter: “Agent Rich Paul has notified the New Orleans Pelicans that All-NBA forward Anthony Davis has no intention of signing a contract extension if and when presented and that he has requested a trade, Paul told ESPN on Monday.”

Wojnarowski then quoted Paul as saying: “Anthony wants to be traded to a team that allows him the chance to win consistently and compete for a championship.

“Anthony wanted to be honest and clear with his intentions and that’s the reason for informing them of this decision now.

“That’s in the best interests of both Anthony’s and the organization’s future.”

Paul is the long-time agent of LeBron James, who is desperate for Davis to join him at the Lakers.

The Pelicans can offer Davis a supermax deal worth $ 240million in the summer.

But the 25-year-old, a five-time All-Star, has repeatedly held off making a decision on his future until now.

The Lakers are the favourites to get him now if they put forward an enticing enough offer.

The NBA trade deadline closes on February 7 so the Lakers face a race to convince the Pelicans.

Last week, NBA legend Reggie Miller claimed the Pelicans could be enticed into a trade for Davis if Kyle Kuzma is put in a package.

“That would be huge if they could get Anthony Davis,” Miller said on The Dan Patrick Show.

“I’m hearing rumblings in New Orleans. The whole finger issue, granted I think he is hurt, but if they get a chance to get Anthony Davis to play alongside LeBron James…

“When LeBron comes back, it’s not etched in stone that they’re going to go on another run.

“They had just built up playing together and playing well when he went down.

“What are they now? Five and nine without him and now they’re in 10th place in the Western Conference.

“No Ball for another month and Rondo is on the verge of coming back.

“It’s time maybe for Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka to make a big move.

“The question is, who are you going to give up?

“To me personally, Kuzma can not be in the deal but I have a feeling he will be.

“He will be in the deal. Who has been the best player on the Lakers besides LeBron James? He [Kuzma] has to be in the deal unfortunately.”

Eddie Hearn says that after numerous unanswered calls and emails, he is beginning to doubt Deontay Wilder’s claim that he wants to unify the four main world heavyweight titles in a blockbuster bout with Anthony Joshua.

Both Joshua and Wilder’s camps have talked up the potential of a unification bout this year, though it appears that the matter has been complicated somewhat by the recent draw between Wilder and former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

Talk of a bout between Wilder and Joshua, the two undefeated champions, has been rife since last year but contract negotiations stalled before the WBA ordered Joshua to undertake a mandatory defense against Alexander Povetkin.

Since then, Wilder appears to more focused on a rematch with Fury after their outstanding bout late last year.

Joshua’s camp, though, are still holding out hope that they will be next to face Wilder, though Hearn says that they are nowhere close to a deal at the moment.

“We would desperately love to fight Deontay Wilder in Wembley on April 13th,” Hearn said to Love Sport Radio.

“We have offered him successively more and more. Not just guaranteed money, but percentage money. It will generate many times more than he has ever earned in his life. But there’s a certain level beyond which we won’t go because AJ is the A-side.

“Unfortunately to report that so far despite three, four emails, dozens of phone calls. We haven’t had one response from Deontay Wilder’s team.

“So sooner or later you take the hint that maybe they don’t want us that bad. But then they’re also, I guess, planning a Tyson Fury rematch.”

Wilder, meanwhile, says that he must strike while the iron is hot with regard to a second bout with Fury following the massive interest in their first battle.

“It was a controversial fight, and when it’s like that you’ve gotta come back,” he said to Fight Hub TV. “There can’t be no draws. There’s a winner and a loser, do you know what I’m saying?”

Should a contract to face Wilder not be signed in advance of Hearn’s deadline, it is likely that they will turn their attention to a rematch with Dillian Whyte, who defeated Derick Chisora by 11th round knockout last month. Joshua is the only man to best Whyte in his professional career, knocking him out in the seventh round of their December 2015 bout in London.

Anthony Davis is wanted by Golden State Warriors, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe.

Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics have been long linked with a move for the MVP-calibre power forward.

But sources have apparently told Lowe that the reigning champions Warriors are also mulling over a scoop for the Pelicans star.

However, there is a major problem in that the Warriors can ill-afford to send any of their leading men as part of a trade for Davis.

“The Warriors have been publicly linked to Davis before and would surely be interested, sources say,” Lowe wrote.

“But it’s hard to find a realistic path ahead of next season. They aren’t trading [Steph] Curry or [Kevin] Durant for him; Durant is a free agent anyway.

“Draymond Green probably isn’t enticing enough as a centerpiece considering what little else the Warriors have in draft picks and young players.

“Klay Thompson is a free agent too, and it seems unlikely he would agree to a sign-and-trade sending him to New Orleans.”

LeBron James

LeBron James could take a number of weeks to return to action after picking up a groin injury, according to Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry.

Curry has only recently returned to full fitness after spending almost a month out injured with the same problem and he offered advice to his cross-state rival.

“You got to take those first four or five days, that was what my experience was, to make sure you don’t do any more damage,” Curry told The Undefeated.

“You have to let the healing process start. That is one you can’t really rush. That is how I felt because it was such a delicate area.”

Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant could be tempted into a move to New York Knicks, according to NBA pundit Shannon Sharpe.

Durant is in the last year of his Golden State Warriors contract and can walk away as a free agent next summer.

“Warriors, I would be a little concerned,” Sharpe told the Undisputed.

“It sounds like to me, and KD knows this, he is never going to get the credit he deserves winning Championships there.

“If he goes to the Knicks and wins one Championship it would be worth more than the three [with the Warriors] if he was to win one this year.”

While the one-year extension has bought United some time, it seems Martial’s camp are far from happy with the current offers being presented to them.

Martial’s agent, Philippe Lamboley, stated in the summer that the France international wanted to leave the club after a breakdown in negotiations.

And it seems those discussions have failed to improve, with Lamboley suggesting a new long-term deal is far from being agreed.

“I am very pessimistic about discussions going positively,” he told RMC.

“They’ve already made several offers that come nowhere near to what we expect.”

Martial has only started nine Premier League games this season for United, with Jose Mourinho constantly tinkering his attacking positions.

But the 23-year-old is still the club’s leading goalscorer with seven goals in the English top flight.

He bagged both goals in the impressive 2-2 draw with Chelsea back in October and also found the net in as United shared the points with Arsenal earlier this month.

Despite his good form in front of goal, Martial still struggles to maintain a regular starting place in United’s starting line-up.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal were touted as potential destinations for the disgruntled winger in the past summer.

But it was reported before the start of the season that there was a reason United were strongly against selling up.

Martial could end up costing United a total of £57.6million, depending on further clauses yet to be activated, having been bought from Monaco back in 2013.

And reports stated the Ligue 1 side are due half of any profit United would get from selling Martial.

That has seemingly put the Red Devils off selling the Frenchman.

Meanwhile, uncertainty is growing over whether or not the United board will offer Mourinho funds in the transfer window.

The manager has spent £350m on new players since his arrival at Old Trafford in the summer of 2016.

And Mourinho was vocal in his criticism of the board for their failure to sign a new centre-half in the summer window.

Mourinho is seeking to strengthen his defence but, with his job under increasing scrutiny, the board may refrain from fully backing his spending wishes next month.

United play Cardiff on Saturday before hosting Huddersfield on Boxing Day.

They then welcome Bournemouth to Old Trafford on Sunday, December 30 and see out the Christmas period with a trip to Newcastle on January 2.
