This is Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also known as “AMLO.” The 64-year-old emerged as the country’s president on Sunday night with around 53% of the vote.

He grew in a middle-class family in Tabasco state, the son of a petroleum merchant during Mexico’s oil boom. His friends at the time thought he too would become a businessman, but he chose to become a political activist and a human rights lawyer fighting against big oil companies in his 20s instead.

On December 1, he will take over from Enrique Peña Nieto, who leaves the presidency with a mere 17% approval rating, and who clashed with Donald Trump over trade and the proposed US-Mexico border wall.

Mexico presidents are limited to one six-year term, called a sexenio, so Peña Nieto did not run against López Obrador this year.

As Puerto Ricans struggle following Hurricane Maria, and US aid seems in short supply, celebrity chef José Andrés is stepping in—serving more meals than even the Red Cross.

When an earthquake rocked Haiti in 2010, chef José Andrés felt compelled to do something useful. Andrés, who is known for his jovial personality and his equally playful cuisine at restaurants like Jaleo and Zaytinya in Washington, DC, could easily stay in the comfy circles of the upscale culinary world—he’s a James Beard-awarded ‘Outstanding Chef’ and earlier this year, he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Culinary Professionals.

But the restless, globe-trotting Andrés has never been content to confine himself to gleaming kitchens with multi-burner stoves and well-stocked walk-ins, and so he founded World Central Kitchen, a non-profit that unites chefs and deploys them to communities in need—think ‘Chefs Without Borders.’

While World Central Kitchen provides ongoing culinary training and job opportunities in several countries, it’s become best known for its disaster response work. And so, when Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017,  knocking out the electrical grid, destroying roads, and creating a water and food crisis, it didn’t take long for Andrés to decide he’d deploy his team to the island.

Since Hurricane Maria ripped across the island, the mainland US media has been tracking stories about the difficulty of disaster response efforts. Even in good times, life is often more complicated on an island; in hard times, the most basic logistics become nearly impossible to execute. The scale of devastation caused by the hurricane, sweeping not just the coastlines, but also across the entire interior of the island, was unprecedented for Puerto Rico.

Nearly a month after the hurricane hit, most of the island’s residents remain without electricity and drinking water—and the situation doesn’t look like it’s going to get better anytime soon.

And what’s less reported in mainstream outlets is how electricity and water availability further complicate the daily challenge of cooking and eating. With no diesel, trucks can’t deliver food to supermarkets. And with no or extremely limited power, often generator-powered, grocery stores—even mega-chains like Sam’s Club and Walmart—can’t stock meat and dairy products, even if supplies are making it to the island.

Without power, Puerto Ricans can’t use debit or credit cards to buy food that is available, and it’s hard to withdraw cash from banks. And while the US Postal Service claims it’s doing its best to deliver care packages from the mainland to Puerto Rico, on-the-ground reports suggest that packages of food and other necessities sent weeks ago still haven’t shown up.

There’s been intense criticism of FEMA, the federal agency responsible for disaster response, which is widely viewed as not acting quickly or decisively enough to send the aid that was available to the areas and people most affected by the hurricane. FEMA, in response, has blamed Puerto Rican politicking for its challenges. One of the agency’s most vocal critics is Andrés.

Earlier this week, he bluntly told TIME Magazine: “The American government has failed,” adding that FEMA could be providing more support to him and his team in order to expand their capacity to serve more Puerto Ricans in need.

Andrés and World Central Kitchen have been on the ground for more than three weeks, and his team reports to Adventure.com that they are providing at least 100,000 meals daily out of multiple locations across the island. On October 17, they served their millionth meal, surpassing the efforts of the Red Cross.

The upcoming IT movie is expected to scare some life back into the global box office.

After a disapppointing summer of fumbles and flops, Hollywood is hoping that the horror movie won’t clown around and will bring in record numbers. 

The director, Andres Muschietti, was already linked to move on to a new project, Robotech, next, but it looks like everyting has changed.

The Argentinian just revealed his exciting plans for the IT sequel that will guarantee it is bigger, badder and balloontastic.

Muschietti was talking to Italian entertainment site Bad Taste at the Venice Film Festival, when he dropped the huge news.

Fans already new that the IT movie is based on the first part of Stephen Kings’ horror classic. A sequel will pick up events 20 years later in Derry and follow Pennywise and the other incarnations of the terrifying ancient evil being who preys on young children.

Muschietti was expected to take a break and concentrate on the sci-fi epic Robotech first, which is reportedly a “high priority” for Sony Studios. 

However, IT signalled the likelihood of a massive box office success when the first trailer broke all records and anticipation has continued to build. The movie is on course to exceed all expectations when it finally hits cinemas in teh UK and US on September 8.

When Bad Taste asked Muscietti if he would still make Robotech before the IT sequel he stunned fans when he said: “No, It 2 is my priority. In which case, I will direct Robotech afterwards.”

He also confirmed that he expected he would be able to expand his vision in the second movie.

When he was asked if the expected success of the first movie would increase his budget he said: “I would certainly hope so.”

A statement by Cyclone Promotions on Facebook said: “Cyclone Promotions and The SSE Arena regret to announce that the “Return of The Jackal” event scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 29th July, has been cancelled due to an accident to Andres Gutierrez.

“It is hoped that the event will be re-scheduled but ticket holders are advised to retain their tickets and contact point of purchase for further information.”

Angry fans bombarded the page to express their frustration at the fight being called off.

One person wrote: “This whole event has been an absolute sham. Just be honest and tell us what is actually going on behind the scenes instead of giving the working class people who are spending their hard earned money no information and holding everything back. It’s an absolute disgrace.”

Another added: “Hope you’re paying out refunds, absolute farce of an event from the very beginning.”

The fight was already marred in controversy after Frampton weighed in one pound over the featherweight limit and as a result, the bout was no longer due to be a WBC title eliminator.

Frampton, who has not fought in his native Belfast since February 2015, issued an apology expressing his disappointment at failing to make weight. 

He said: “After a long training camp of intense preparation and trying to make weight, I was disappointed that I came in 1lb over the featherweight limit.

“I tried everything I could to cut down, but unfortunately, my body just wouldn’t allow it in the end.

“I’d like to apologise to the fans that have got involved and shown incredible support throughout this frantic fight week, and to those that will be cheering me on to victory on Saturday night.

“Furthermore I would like to apologise to my opponent Andres Gutierrez – who will still have the opportunity to win the WBC eliminator on Saturday.”
