The 42-year-old Mexican is one of the most recognizable Latino talents in Hollywood, a consistently reliable working actor who delivers good and often great performances when given the chance. Luna has been in Hollywood for nearly twenty years, mainly playing supporting roles, and is finally stepping into the franchise spotlight with Tony Gilroy’s slow-burn space adventure Andor, the latest entry in the ever-expanding Star Wars universe. Andor, where he also serves as an executive producer, provides Luna with his first starring role since Netflix’s Narcos and represents his first chance to lead a major franchise since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Reviews for Andor have been positive, with critics praising its slow approach and declaring it a breath of fresh air amid the increasingly formulaic projects that the Star Wars/Disney machine keeps churning out yearly. On a more personal level, Andor represents Luna’s chance to step up and prove he can carry a big-name IP on his back. Easier said than done, especially with a property like Star Wars, infamous for breaking many actors’ rising careers and having one of the most divided and openly confrontational fanbases. But Hollywood is experiencing a pivotal moment for inclusivity and support for Latino talent. And with Andor already renewed for a second season and critics and audiences rooting up for him, Luna has the chance to enter the next stage of his career. In his case, it truly is now or never.

From Mexico with love

Two young men and a woman standing together against a desertic background in the 2001 film Y Tu Mamá También.

Born in Toluca, Diego Luna has the arts running through his veins. His father, Alejandro Luna, is a theater, film, and opera set designer who encouraged his son to love and appreciate the arts, eventually leading him to pursue an acting career. Like his compatriots Salma Hayek, Eiza González, and his long-time best friend, Gael García Bernal, Luna had his beginnings on the small screen. Telenovelas are the best way for Mexican talent to make a name for themselves, providing them with enough acting experience to prepare them for the transition to Hollywood and endearing them to the Mexican audience.

Luna’s naturalistic and effortless charm was on full display from the very beginning; he often played spirited and relatable young men surrounded by chaotic circumstances. Never was his boyish appeal clearer than in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2001 road film Y Tu Mamá También, which catapulted him and co-star Gael García Bernal to international prominence. As Tenoch, Luna was a precocious talent who refused to be ignored. A coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of a pivotal time in Mexican politics, Y Tu Mamá También was a game-changer for Latino talent on the international stage. Not only did it make stars out of Cuarón, Luna, and García Bernal, but it redefined Mexican cinema’s reach and influence, starting a movement that placed Latino storytelling on a rising path.

By being front and center in the film that started it all, Luna and Bernal became unintentional but willing leaders of the movement. Their careers largely existed in parallel to one another, with each taking a distinctive and ultimately fruitful approach; whereas Luna favored supporting roles in such major Hollywood productions as Frida, The Terminal, Milk, and Elysium, Bernal focused on provocative and “daring,” often experimental projects that placed him front and center, like The Crime of Padre Amaro, Bad Education, and The Science of Sleep.

The result, however, was the same, as both Luna and García Bernal held the title of “most recognizable Mexican actors” in Hollywood for years — they still do, in fact. Well aware of their impact and the place their real-life friendship had on the cultural lexicon, Luna and Bernal co-starred in numerous films, although none were as influential as Y Tu Mamá También. Above all, the duo paved the way for future Latino talent in Hollywood by redefining the standards of who a leading man could be.

Breaking through

It could be easy to discard Luna’s influence in Hollywood — after all, he lacks the Oscar nomination that would turn him into a “prestige” actor or the major commercial hit that would make him a box-office draw. However, Luna’s career has something much more important: consistency. The actor has been working for over twenty years, never once failing to impress even in the smallest and most thankless roles. The longevity of his career speaks not only to his talent and resilience but his influence and impact on an industry that actively boxes Latino talent and encourages them to stay in their lane.

But Luna has never stayed in one lane, pursuing different venues, including producing and directing, exploring different genres like sci-fi and romantic comedy, and doing his utter best to break new ground for those coming after him. Luna has played the obligatory roles for a Latino working actor — mainly drug dealers and illegal immigrants –, but he’s never indulged their harmful tropes and conventionalities. There’s a dignity to his performances, a willingness to reject audiences’ expectations. Luna favors nuance and subtlety; even in Narcos‘ most brutal scenes, there’s a softness to his choices that makes him all the more compelling.

You could fault Luna for indulging Hollywood’s idea of Latino actors. You could also blame him for “glorifying” violence in a country that already endures too much of it. But there is no point in recriminating, especially when Luna has been very open about the physical and emotional hardships of playing such a figure. Actors act, and if we were to shun all who play reprehensible characters, there’d be no actors left to admire. The fact remains that Luna has been at the forefront of Latino advancement in Hollywood for years now, and his contributions often go overlooked. Narcos México gave him more exposure than any of his other projects in the 2010s, with the obvious exception of Rogue One.

We are at a crucial time for representation in Hollywood, and Latino talent is breaking casting boundaries. Luna’s Narcos co-star Tenoch Huerta will make a splash as Namor, the Submariner, in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. And his best friend, Gael García Bernal, will make his MCU debut with the Werewolf By Night Disney+ Halloween special, an ode to creature features and B-horror movies of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Salma Hayek, Oscar Isaac, and Pedro Pascal continue striving to increase Latino exposure in Hollywood, finally breaking into the big-budget blockbuster territory that remained closed to them for years. With Andor, Luna joins them on the frontlines, but let’s not pretend like he hasn’t been fighting this war for decades now.

The rebel at the right time

Diego Luna walking among a factory-like space in Andor.

Star Wars is in a weird place. The much-maligned prequels divided the fandom, and things only worsened once the sequels arrived. You could blame Disney — their factory-like approach to “content” is certainly responsible for some of the franchise’s problems — but there’s also a case to be made that the Star Wars universe was stretched too thin, too fast. The galaxy far, far away is certainly a compelling and fascinating universe, but does that mean audiences want to spend an unlimited amount of time in it?

Andor has been both praised and criticized for marking a stark departure from the Easter egg, fan-service-dominated landscape permeating over the last Star Wars projects. Tony Gilroy’s vigorous, grounded, almost naturalistic approach to the franchise feels like a breath of fresh air amid the murky, largely homogenous styles of previous Star Wars entries. But there’s a distinctive lack of “action” in Andor, especially considering its slow-burn approach to storytelling. Gilroy is more concerned with the human side of the “Wars,” favoring political intrigue and plot rather than action setpieces and Jedi fanfare. And while Andor is far from Succession in space, it’s far more narratively complex than something like Boba Fett.

Yet, therein lies its appeal. Andor can revitalize Star Wars and make it feel timely and meaningful again, and Luna is front and center, perhaps handling the biggest challenge of his career. It’s not a matter of whether he can do it — rest assured, he can — but rather one of whether he’ll be allowed to or fall prey to the Star Wars machine. After all, this is the franchise that kept Pedro Pascal hidden behind a helmet, wasted Ewan McGregor, and reduced Temuera Morrison to an afterthought in what was supposed to be his show. No IP chews and spits out actors like Star Wars does. But Luna has faced and conquered tougher challenges; aided by Tony Gilroy’s vision and a story that lends itself to a decidedly humanistic approach, his time in the spotlight might provide him with a showcase worthy of his talents.

It’s been a long road for Luna, but he’s stayed relevant and consistent, defying conventions and even expectations. It might be exaggerated and outright insulting to call Andor his reward, but it’s certainly an acknowledgment of the place he’s crafted for himself in Hollywood. If anything, beyond what Andor achieves for its struggling franchise, the show should have a lasting effect on Luna’s long-term career. If this is his equivalent of “one for them, one for me,” then we will pay close attention to see what this fascinating and versatile actor does next. Perhaps something with the Gilroys? A spiritual sequel to Nightcrawler has never sounded more appealing.

At its worst, Star Wars: Andor is a sanded-off, PG-13 version of some of the best TV dramas of the past decade. It’s easy to see traces of The Wire, Lost, and Breaking Bad in this story of Star Wars-adjacent scum and villainy. However, as you might suspect, such nuanced TV inspirations can only go so far in a franchise that regularly features chirping droids and action figure tie-ins.

At its best, though, Andor plays out like no other Star Wars film or TV entry to date, and it bodes well for the series’ post-Skywalker future. Andor flexes its adult-ish aspirations to better resemble the gritty content that has made series sidebars like comics, novels, and video games beloved. While its momentum takes a little too long to kick in, enough quality coalesces by the end of the series’ first 100 minutes to make it a worthy recommendation for fans of compelling sci-fi television, let alone Star Wars loyalists.

At Disney+, an initial release of three episodes says a lot

This series “follows” the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story the only way Lucasfilm really could: by building a prequel out of its likable anti-hero Cassian Andor. (Spoiler alert: If this series had been a direct timeline sequel to that film, it would, uh, include far fewer characters.) Since his name’s in the title, Andor features as the star, and the events rewind to both his biggest adult and childhood adventures.

Andor review: Rogue One prequel is slow-burn Star Wars https://briefnews.eu/andor-review-rogue-one-prequel-is-slow-burn-star-wars/ https://briefnews.eu/andor-review-rogue-one-prequel-is-slow-burn-star-wars/#respond Thu, 22 Sep 2022 00:34:41 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/andor-review-rogue-one-prequel-is-slow-burn-star-wars/ Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story isn’t the most controversial Star Wars movie ever made, but it still inspires plenty of passionate debate among fans about the place it holds in the beloved sci-fi saga. A gritty, standalone war story set in the period just before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, 2016’s Rogue One was always a risky bet, but it was one that paid off as it became the third highest-grossing film in the entire franchise.

Now, the studio is doubling down on that bet with Andor, a prequel-of-a-prequel that explores the formative years of Diego Luna’s rebel spy Cassian Andor from Rogue One. And much like the film that inspired it, Andor delivers a very different — but welcome — Star Wars story with its simmering tale of espionage set in the early days of a galactic rebellion.

Street-level sci-fi

Created and co-produced by Rogue One co-writer Tony Gilroy, Andor isn’t the action-packed adventure rooted in franchise lore and packed with deep-cuts that Star Wars fans have come to expect with The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Instead, the series offers a more thoughtful, slow-developing story about the conditions and events that led to the environment we’re thrown into in A New Hope, with a small alliance of rebels engaged in a seemingly un-winnable war to overthrow the Galactic Empire.

Andor has you experience life under the Empire through Cassian’s eyes, doled out memory by memory and through one bad turn after another under a harsh, authoritarian regime. It’s the sort of ground-level perspective we haven’t seen nearly enough of in the Star Wars universe, and Andor reveals what life is like for the people who aren’t jetting around the galaxy on grand adventures or wielding superhuman powers in epic battles.

From rank-and-file members of the Empire to the inhabitants of overlooked planets that have become just another cog in the Imperial machinery, Andor does a nice job of not only reminding us that these characters exist, but also that they can have big parts to play in some of the saga’s most important moments.

Keeping characters close

It takes almost four episodes of Andor for Luna’s character to find his way to the still-forming rebellion, so it will be interesting to see how patient Gilroy and the series’ creative team can be with the story that will, at some point, need to connect with the events — and characters — of Rogue One.

Although Luna’s character wasn’t necessarily the star of Rogue One — Felicity Jones did a wonderful job leading the film’s ensemble as Jyn Erso — he makes for a compelling and unique lead in the series. Cassian is a product of his environment, and that particular environment forces you to either fall in line or live every day on a razor’s edge, where one slip can put you on the wrong side of an Imperial blaster. Luna’s Cassian can’t help being the latter, and feels like a character in the mold of A New Hope-era Han Solo, with a moral compass that generally hovers on the side of good, but just barely.

Andor does introduce a few intriguing supporting characters along the way, too, who serve to bring his trajectory closer to the point when we meet him in the film. Among them, Stellan Skarsgård’s mysterious rebel agent Luthen Rael is as reliably fascinating and layered as so many of the actor’s roles, and will hopefully play a bigger role in the series as the season progresses. As an ambitious, but naïve, local law-enforcement agent, Kyle Soller’s Syril serves as a nice counterpoint to Luna’s Cassian, exploring what life is like for someone on the ground level who buys into the Empire completely rather than rejecting it.

Diego Luna looks behind him while walking down a street in a scene from Andor.

Pushing boundaries

Andor’s first four episodes barely scratch the surface of the character’s arc and what brings him into the events of Rogue One, but they still deliver plenty of rewarding moments.

Where The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett blended pulp sci-fi adventure and classic Western themes, however, Andor filters the Star Wars universe through a much grittier, wartime espionage lens. It’s a decidedly different vibe from the live-action Star Wars shows we’ve seen so far, stripped of the fantastic alien environments and outer-space ship battles, and it might not be the show some fans are anticipating.

Still, there’s a lot to like about where Andor is taking the Star Wars saga. Projects such as the Star Wars: Visions anthology series and various canonical video games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order have all proven there’s plenty of flexibility in the franchise as far as the stories and cast of characters it can encompass. Andor does something similar, and builds on the themes and tone that set Rogue One apart from other Star Wars films as it carves out its own, unique place in the Star Wars canon.

The Star Wars series Andor premieres September 21 on the Disney+ streaming service.

What Andor Gets Right That Other Star Wars Shows Got Wrong https://briefnews.eu/what-andor-gets-right-that-other-star-wars-shows-got-wrong/ https://briefnews.eu/what-andor-gets-right-that-other-star-wars-shows-got-wrong/#respond Wed, 21 Sep 2022 11:54:53 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/what-andor-gets-right-that-other-star-wars-shows-got-wrong/

One of the biggest, bold things Disney did after buying Lucasfilm was to expand the scope of the “Star Wars” franchise beyond the Skywalker saga. That kicked off in earnest with 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” a movie that managed to turn a few lines of text from the opening crawl of “A New Hope” into a $ 1 billion hit — and arguably one of the best “Star Wars” movies ever made. At the very least, it’s certainly one of the most beloved of the Disney era. Now, we’re getting to revisit that corner of the universe with “Andor,” the latest live-action “Star Wars” show on Disney+, which just dropped its three-episode premiere.

As the title implies, the show centers on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, a member of the Rebellion who is at the center of “Rogue One.” This show picks up with him years before he meets his demise in that film and shows us how he got involved in the Rebellion in the first place. It has already been picked up for two seasons and those two seasons will take us right up to the events of “Rogue One.” There is a plan in place, and as a fan, it feels as though Lucasfilm is not just flying by the seat of its pants on this one. This show feels different in a profound and very positive way: It actually feels like a show, and is making good use of this particular medium of storytelling.

Not All Star Wars Should Be On TV

Some of the best “Star Wars” we’ve ever had has been on TV. While “The Mandalorian” is surely included in that, I am also talking about animation, such as “Star Wars Rebels.” But Disney has doubled down on TV in this franchise following the sequel trilogy and, in some cases, that hasn’t made a lot of sense or produced ideal results.

“The Book of Boba Fett” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” have their fans, but in my humble opinion, these shows were done a disservice by the medium and probably would have been better off as movies. Both of those shows were originally going to be movies at various points. Unfortunately, the relative failure of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” at the box office made Lucasfilm back off a bit and rethink its strategy with spin-off films. So those projects became shows instead, largely due to the fact that “The Mandalorian” did so well on Disney+, paving a new path for “Star Wars” to traverse.

But just because something can be a show doesn’t mean it should be. More doesn’t equal better. You could feel the story being stretched at points in “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” and perhaps just as importantly, the budget, as well. Having to stretch those dollars over more hours did that show a big disservice. It deserved to feel cinematic. Deborah Chow could have directed the hell out of a movie that reunited Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan and Hayden Christensen’s Darth Vader. The show had outstanding moments, but was largely a five-hour movie carved up into episodes that weren’t really episodes — they were just breaking points that only kind of/sort of worked.

Similarly, “The Book of Boba Fett” felt as though it might have been served better as a more concise, cinematic story. Having to tell a longer story and get clever with the budget hurt the project in the long run. Neither of these series, in my humble “Star Wars”-loving opinion, benefited from being a show rather than being a movie. That’s the key.

This Is The Way

Let me be crystal clear: I love “Star Wars,” and more to the point, I love to love “Star Wars.” I am not cynical by nature. So I take no joy in saying any of these shows left me feeling a bit empty. Thankfully, “Andor” doesn’t suffer from that same pitfall. This is a show that truly feels as though it was always meant to be a show, and actually benefits from episodic storytelling. Also, not for nothing, it looks absolutely incredible, and, for whatever reason, doesn’t (at least through the first few episodes) suffer some of the visual setbacks of “Obi-Wan” or “Boba Fett.” It’s stunning, and doesn’t feel like a movie being carved up for parts to benefit a streaming service.

Some people have run up against the first two episodes of this show being a bit slow. Again, I can only speak to my personal feelings and say that I didn’t have that issue. Even so, a great many wonderful shows get off to somewhat slow starts. What Tony Gilroy and the rest of the crew have done here is make a “Star Wars” show that is tailored to the medium and benefits from being able to spend time with these characters and living in the world. It doesn’t feel like character stuff being injected into the story to fill time. There is a gigantic difference.

The point is, some “Star Wars” stories are going to make sense on TV and some aren’t. Some should definitely be a movie, or perhaps nothing at all. It delights me to say that “Andor” would only be hampered by a constricted, two-hour runtime and that Lucasfilm made the right call in this case. My sincere hope is that, in the future, more of this franchise on the small screen feels this way as well, and other stories don’t get forced onto Disney+ merely because that’s what the corporate overlords want.

“Andor” is now streaming on Disney+.
