After a year of workshopping, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy unveiled the GOP's 2023 "Commitment to America" platform — featuring stock footage of Ukraine and Russia used to demonstrate the beauty of the United States and a fake Abraham Lincoln quote used in a letter to members of Congress.
In a promotional video released yesterday titled "The Preamble to the Commitment to America," a narrator exhalts America's exceptionalism, blames Democrats for leading the country "off track," and announces the 2023 party platform priorities: an economy that's strong, a nation that's safe, a future built on freedom, and a government that's accountable.
The intentionally vague platform seeks to unite the GOP ahead of a tense election season marked by internal conflict and anticipated rifts between moderate Republicans and election-denying allies of Donald Trump, The Washington Post reported.
Several clips in the video meant to portray the diversity and "vibrancy" of America — including scenes of a woman shopping in a supermarket, a child running through a field, and a farmer carrying a bag of wheat — were actually stock footage filmed in Russia and Ukraine, HuffPost first reported.
Several images were created by Serg Grbanoff, a filmmaker based in Russia, HuffPost reported, who confirmed to the outlet the images were created in the Volgograd region of his home country. Another image was created by a Shutterstock contributor, DedovStock, who posts shots he takes in Ukraine.
"Interesting how you guys aren't remotely interested on the issues facing the American people in the video," McCarthy spokesman Mark Bednar told HuffPost when asked about the stock footage.
The stock footage wasn't the only issue to arise with the rollout of the platform. In a letter to House members announcing its priorities — tweeted by Politico reporter Olivia Beavers — McCarthy signs his name to letterhead featuring a quote falsely attributed to Lincoln.
"Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality," the letter reads, attributing the quote to the nation's 16th president.
Christian McWhirter, a historian at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, told The Daily Beast he could find "no reliable evidence" that Lincoln ever uttered those words.
"They do not appear in his writings and I cannot find them recollected by any of his contemporaries," McWhirter told The Daily Beast.
The phrase, attributed online to Lincoln, Shearson Lehman, and anonymous sources depending on the reference point, was printed in a 1986 full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal paid for by investment banking firm Lehman Brothers to thank its long-term employees.
"Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality," the ad reads, The Daily Beast reported. "It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions. And the actions which speak louder than words. It is making the time when there is none. Coming through time after time after time, year after year after year."

The Justice Department is looking into Donald Trump's main fundraising arm, Save America, with a federal grand jury doling a fresh set of subpoenas this week to aides who worked in the Trump administration and the former president's election campaign, according to multiple reports.
The subpoenas appear to be a part of the DOJ's larger inquiry into the events leading up to the Capitol riot, ABC News reported. The Justice Department is currently investigating the moments leading up to the insurrection, attempts to obstruct that inquiry, and the scheme to overturn the 2020 vote using a slate of fake electors.
About a half-dozen current and former aides were subpoenaed, The New York Times reported, citing anonymous sources familiar with the investigation. This includes former Trump White House aides William B. Harrison, William S. Russell, and Nicholas Luna, as well as Ivanka Trump's chief of staff Julie Radford.
The interest in Trump's Save America PAC is a new development in the DOJ's probe, although it's unclear what particular actions the fundraising vehicle is being investigated for or how it relates to the inquiry into the January 6, 2021, attack, according to The Times.
Federal prosecutors are interested in the formation of the PAC and its spending practices, ABC News reported. A source familiar with the subpoenas' language told CNN that the department may be investigating whether those associated with the PAC employed baseless claims about the 2020 election to defraud people.
Save America did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
The development comes as Trump is mired in a series of ongoing criminal probes by the Justice Department.
On Thursday, the DOJ appealed a federal judge's order that would allow for an independent party to review thousands of documents that were seized from Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort.
In its filing, federal prosecutors wrote that the appeal would "likely" succeed.

With some of his strongest statements yet, President Joe Biden assailed "MAGA Republicans" in a rare prime-time speech on Thursday evening, as he spoke of an impending "battle for the soul of the nation," just two months ahead of the November midterm elections.
Though his administration advertised the speech as an official White House event and not a campaign event, Biden's televised comments come as he works to drum up support for Democratic lawmakers in an effort to help his party maintain control of Congress.
Biden delivered his remarks from the Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday night, channeling the venue's "sacred" history in his early statements.
"Tonight I have come here to the place where it all began to speak plainly as I can to the nation about the threats we face, about the power we have in our hands to meet these threats," he said. "And about the incredible future that lies in front of us if only we choose it."
Biden has mostly avoided using Trump's name in recent speeches, but by naming him Thursday, he offered a more pointed attack at the former president and his supporters, accusing them of embracing extremism.
"MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards. Backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love," Biden said. "They promote authoritarian leaders and fan the flames of political violence."
The president acknowledged that the majority of Republicans are not the type of people about which he was talking, but said the current Republican Party is undoubtedly "dominated, driven, and intimidated by MAGA Republicans," and called it a threat to our country.
"For a long time, we've told ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed. But it is not. We have to defend it. Protect it. Stand up for it. Each and every one of us," the president said.
Biden went off-script at one point to describe "darkness like you're hearing in that bullhorn," referring to protests outside the hall.
He urged the country to come together and unite behind a single purpose in rejecting MAGA ideology, while castigating insurrectionists and stressing the danger of undermining election integrity.
"There's no place for political violence in America," he said to applause from the crowd.
In a statement shared with Insider, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Biden's "wretched attacks" on millions of Americans are fueling division in the country.
"His agenda has pitted neighbors against each other, rewarded the wealthy while punishing working families, and trampled on the rights and freedoms of Americans," McDaniel said. "Joe Biden is the divider-in-chief and epitomizes the current state of the Democrat Party: one of divisiveness, disgust, and hostility towards half the country."
The president's comments come just days after he suggested at a Democratic fundraiser that the ideology of the MAGA Republicans who have embraced former President Donald Trump's worldview have paved the way for "semi-fascism" in the country.
Biden also took time during the speech to highlight some of his legislative successes, including a gun safety law and a recent healthcare reform and climate package, and made promises for the future, including ending cancer and providing more clean jobs.
"Democracy must be defended, for democracy makes all these things possible," he said.
The president ended his speech by encouraging people to "vote, vote, vote," and made mention of doing "our duty" in 2022 and beyond.
But whether or not most Americans heard Biden's plea remains unclear. The three primary broadcasting networks chose not to carry his speech, opting to show their regular-scheduled programming instead.

Food Network has pulled all content related to Season 20 of Worst Cooks in America, following the arrest of winner Ariel Robinson for a child’s death.
Robinson, 29, along with husband Jerry Robinson, 34, face counts of homicide by child abuse for the death of their adopted three-year-old daughter, reports TV news station WHNS. The child, identified as Victoria Smith, was found unresponsive on Jan. 14 at the couple’s home in Simpsonville, S.C., having died as a result of blunt force injuries, according to a medical examination.
Since the arrest was made, Season 20’s episodes and all clips related to it have disappeared from the Food Network’s Discovery+, Hulu and YouTube pages. The network has yet to comment on the situation.
Robinson won $ 25,000 in the last edition of Worst Cooks in America, which follows contestants with admittedly bad cooking skills as they compete for the grand prize. The cast members endure a cooking boot camp under celebrity chef supervision, all while trying to serve up the best of the worst to avoid elimination.
Hosted by chefs Anne Burrell and Alex Guarnaschelli, Season 20 originally aired in the summer of 2020. Robinson was declared the winner during its Aug. 2 finale. Season 21, featuring Burrell and guest mentor Carla Hall, premiered on the Food Network Jan. 3, 2021.

Warning: This interview contains mild spoilers from the premiere of Netflix’s Grand Army.
Netflix’s newest teen addiction is no Riverdale — and that’s a very good thing.
Loosely based on a 2013 play by series creator Katie Cappiello, Grand Army follows five diverse students at a public high school in Brooklyn. The series, which dropped its first nine episodes on Friday, offers an unflinching look at the experiences of Gen Zers in America, including some challenges that more commonly face teens of color.
“Katie is really big on making it as authentic as possible,” Maliq Johnson, who plays sophomore musician Jayson Jackson, tells TVLine. “If there was a scenario where we felt like things would have gone differently for us in our own lives, she was very open to letting us tell her that. And if there was a way she could do it, she would put it in the show.”
Compared to some of his fellow classmates — who immediately find themselves tackling issues surrounding sexual identity, poverty and slut-shaming — Jay’s life feels comfortably undramatic from the outset. “He’s a goofball and he can be mischievous, but he doesn’t do anything with bad intentions,” Johnson says. “He’s a good kid.”
Unfortunately, like so many young Black men, Jay’s spirit is tested by a series of tragic circumstances. “Jay isn’t really aware of his responsibilities, and how different it is for him as a Black man in America… until something happens on the show that forces him to pay attention to his Blackness,” he teases.
Johnson continues, “I was raised with my parents telling me, ‘You’re a Black man. It’s different for you. If you get into a certain encounter, you have to think about how it’s going to be different for you, how the consequences are going to be more extreme. If something happens to you, it’s going to be hard to get a second chance.”
And this is just one example of the all-too-real problems tackled in Grand Army, whose first episode kicks off with a school-wide lockdown prompted by an incident of domestic terrorism nearby.

America Ferrera isn’t punching out of Superstore as soon as we thought.
TVLine can exclusively confirm that Ferrera — whose previously announced departure from NBC’s No. 1 comedy was delayed due to COVID-19 — has signed on to appear in not one, but two Season 6 episodes. As a result, the sitcom’s milestone 100th episode will now double as Ferrera’s swan song.
The news comes as Superstore works to incorporate the ongoing coronavirus pandemic into Amy’s farewell storyline, which began last season when she accepted a corporate gig in California.
“We’re lucky enough to have America back for our first two episodes of the season,” co-showrunners Jonathan Green and Gabe Miller tell TVLine. “There was so much we wanted to explore with COVID and how it changes the world of Cloud 9 that we decided to focus on that in the premiere, with Amy starting her new job remotely while still trying to manage the store.
“The second episode will cover Amy’s last day at Cloud 9, so we can fully give her the sendoff she deserves,” they continue. “It’s also Superstore‘s 100th episode, so we’re excited that America will be celebrating that milestone with us.”
Further elaborating on Season 6’s COVID theme, Green and Miller tell us that the premiere will pick up where last season’s cliffhanger left off, as the virus delays Amy and Jonah’s move to California. “[There will be] time jumps within the episode taking us through the early months of the pandemic, [before we] gradually catch up to where things are now. We’ll show how all of our characters are handling the uncertainty, the panicky and difficult customers, and the new demands of the job.” That includes Glenn and Dina, who “initially enjoy being called ‘heroes,’ but that doesn’t last long.”
Superstore Season 6 premieres Thursday, Oct. 22 (NBC, 8/7c). Scroll down for an exclusive first look at Season 6’s key art, featuring essential workers Jonah, Dina, Garrett, Cheyenne, Mateo, Sandra and Glenn, all masked up and ready to work through the ongoing crisis.

The Eagle Forum has landed.
Phyllis Schlafly gets both everything and nothing she wanted in Mrs. America‘s finale, which began streaming on FX on Hulu Wednesday. As any student of recent American history knows, the Equal Rights Amendment against which Phyllis so ardently railed still is not part of the United States Constitution. And by 1980/the end of the series, Republican presidential candidate Ronald Reagan has been elected to the White House, ousting the Democratic Jimmy Carter.
But these big wins for Conservatives aren’t enough for the homemaker-turned-power-broker, who desperately wants some recognition for the grassroots work she’s done for years. She’s left wanting, though: Phyllis’ excitement when the president-elect calls is quickly extinguished when Reagan tells her that the cabinet position she’d been assured she’d get isn’t going to happen. He explains that he needs to secure the backing of more pro-ERA women voters, and a deflated Phyllis sheds a tear while her husband assures her she was robbed.
The last visual we have of Phyllis is of her puttering around in the kitchen in an apron, then sitting at the table to peel apples.
But what happened to everyone else we’ve come to know over the season? Let’s see:
* Bella, Gloria and the rest of the National Advisory Committee for Women pressure President Carter to meet with them for more than 15 minutes, and they rejoice when they get two hours of his time. But they don’t know that Carter is planning to fire Bella as co-chair of the committee, news she finds out right after the meeting. The majority of her colleagues resign in solidarity, and a heartbroken Bella returns to New York.
* A slightly tipsy Alice watches Phyllis swan around at an anti-ERA gala and has finally had enough: She confronts her former friend about how she could counsel Pamela to coddle her abusive husband rather than offer her the help she needs. “When did you get so mean?” Alice marvels. Much later on, when the two women run into each other again, Phyllis is surprised to learn that Alice has taken a job as a 411 operator. Alice says not having to ask her husband for pin money is “empowering.” “You used to feel empowered by me,” Phyllis says. “I used to feel scared,” Alice replies, then drives away.
* Eleanor Schlafly gets hit on, and after all that talk about how she’s a dusty old spinster one step away from the old maids’ home, it’s pretty great.
Now it’s your turn. Grade Mrs. America‘s finale via the poll below, then hit the comments with your thoughts!

Before you take a pair of scissors to your quarantine mane, you might want to get some guidance from the professionals — and CBS can help with that.
The network on Thursday announced Haircut Night in America, a one-hour special in which top hair stylists will walk celebrities — and viewers — through the perfect DIY haircut, color and style from their homes.
Married actors Jerry O’Connell (Crossing Jordan) and Rebecca Romijn (Star Trek: Discovery) will host the special, which will feature TV personality Kelly Osbourne, Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn and NHL player P.K. Subban, as well as frontline health care workers, as they attempt to change up their quarantine ‘dos.
“With the majority of salons and barbershops still closed while America shelters in place, many increasingly hirsute people are missing their regularly scheduled salon appointments, and now more than ever need expert advice on how to rein in their unruly manes,” the special’s official logline reads. “After nearly three months of social distancing, the time has come for people to take haircare into their own hands. In Haircut Night in America, top stylists will expertly guide celebrities in a “cut-a-long” from their homes and reveal the final looks, no matter the outcome. They’ll also weave in tips and tricks for viewers to achieve the best at-home coifs, turning DIY hair-DON’Ts into hair-DOs!”
“We’re all in this together, and we’re all starting to look a little shaggy,” said executive producer Tom Forman. “So grab your scissors and join us for a night of makeovers, stars, laughs, tips and celebrity home haircuts overseen by the best stylists in the world.”
Haircut Night in America, which was produced remotely, airs Friday, May 29 at 8/7c on CBS. Will you be watching?

Here’s an announcement that is sure to send shockwaves through Cloud 9: Superstore star and executive producer America Ferrera is leaving the NBC comedy, which has already been renewed for a sixth season. She will make her final appearance as store manager Amy Sosa in the Season 5 finale (airing Thursday, April 16 at 8/7c).
“The last five years on Superstore have been some of the most rewarding, enriching and enjoyable years of my career,” Ferrera said in a statement. “Producing, directing and acting with this wonderful cast and crew has given me opportunities to grow as a person and storyteller. I’m so grateful to my partners at NBC and Universal Television for the support and belief they have always placed in the show, and I’m most thankful to the brilliant [series creator] Justin Spitzer for creating the funny, smart and relevant world of Superstore and inviting me to be a part of it. As I start the next chapter for my family and career, I wish only the best, and much continued success, to my beloved Superstore family.”
Added Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, Co-Presidents of Scripted Programming at NBC Entertainment, “America’s immeasurable contributions to Superstore, both in front of and behind the camera as well as an ambassador for the show, can’t possibly be quantified. We feel so fortunate to call her both a colleague and friend.”
There is no word yet on Amy’s exit storyline, though the seeds have been planted for Ferrera’s character to move up to Cloud 9 corporate and leave Store 1217 behind. In Season 5, the character has softened her anti-corporate stance, while her boyfriend Jonah (played by Ben Feldman) remains dedicated to starting a workers union.
Ferrera’s exit comes at the end of the Superstore‘s first season without the aforementioned Spitzer at the helm. Fellow EPs Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green took over showrunning duties in Season 5.
Superstore was recently renewed for Season 6, which will kick off with its 100th episode. That milestone will now double as the first episode in the series’ post-Amy era.
Are you saddened/shocked/disappointed about Ferrera’s Superstore departure? Sound off in Comments.

EPIX is adapting the popular novels The Warlord Chronicles and A Column of Fire in the coming year, the cable network announced Saturday, in addition to plans for a docuseries about a late-’70s Massachusetts cult.
The Winter King will take on the the mythic saga of King Arthur. Led by the producing team behind The Night Of and His Dark Materials, the scripted drama will adapt Bernard Cornwell’s trilogy of Arthurian novels, The Warlord Chronicles. In the first book, Derfel Cadarn, a former warrior sworn to Arthur and now an elderly monk, tells the story of how Arthur became warlord of Dark Age Britain despite illegitimacy to the throne.
A Column of Fire is based on author Ken Follett’s Elizabethan-era dramatic novel of the same name. Written by former British actress Lizzie Mickery, the series will follow the 1558 romance between Ned Willard and Margery Fitzgerald, continuing on through half a century of political intrigue and turmoil.
Gibson Station, a dramedy set in 1984, centers on three 20-somethings and best friends who set out to pursue their dreams and leave their stamp in Ronald Reagan’s America. The series is helmed by producer/writer/director Edward Burns.
Also on deck is Fall River, a documentary series about a group of brutal murders in 1979 Fall River, Mass. The series chronicles a satanic cult that police alleged was practicing human sacrifice. Cult leader Carl Drew was captured and sent to prison for life without parole, but 20 years later, inconsistent evidence continued haunting the lead investigator, throwing the entire case into question. With new witnesses and evidence on hand, the shocking story of a town caught in the frenzy of “Satanic Panic” will unfold. James Buddy Day (The Lover’s Lane Murders) serves as executive producer and director.
