Folks who have a finger on the pulse of innovation know that the Internet of Things will likely change the way we live and work. Sensors embedded in Wi-Fi-enabled products can transmit data that helps users make decisions, detect problems, and streamline their routines. A combination of IoT and AI can form a particularly helpful technology called ambient intelligence. This smart home solution shows a lot of promise to make life a little easier for everyone, but one demographic group stands to gain notably: aging adults.

Getting older comes with numerous challenges, especially as people realize the things they used to do without problems become more difficult. However, there are many fascinating ways AI-powered IoT devices can help older members of society live safer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.

Increasing medication compliance

Many seniors take multiple medications a day. Forgetting to take just one of them as scheduled could have severe consequences. That’s one reason why Neura, a company that builds AI apps to integrate with IoT devices, made medication compliance a point of focus.

Neura’s technology learns users’ habits and prompts IoT products, such as wearables, to give users actionable reminders about taking pills or checking their blood sugar levels. Statistics indicate that failing to take medication properly is responsible for up to 125,000 deaths annually. Neura’s technology adapts to its users’ routines and integrates with complementary devices in hopes of helping improve patient adherence to orders from health care providers.

Similarly, Intel offers a full-scale IoT pharmaceutical solution called the Onyx Digital Pharmacy. It combines wearable devices, patient education kiosks, and telemedicine to reduce hospital readmission rates for seniors and other demographic groups.

Enabling independent living

Amazon helped the mainstream population recognize the promise of voice-activated speakers with its Alexa-powered products. Similarly, the LifePod could change how elderly people and their caregivers think about technology and what it can do in independent living situations.

The LifePod is touted as the world’s first voice-controlled virtual caregiver. Developers modeled the device after Alexa so that it is able to respond to conversational commands. The device also uses AI and machine learning to give insights into a user’s condition, daily activities, and behavioral trends. Upcoming versions of LifePod will also include sensors and voice triggers that notify outside parties if a user falls.

Making life less lonely

Pervasive loneliness can strike at any age, but older adults are exceptionally vulnerable to it. Opportunities to socialize and the ability to maintain long-standing relationships are often sacrificed when seniors realize that the aging process makes their favorite activities either impossible or so difficult they’re no longer enjoyable.

ElliQ is an intelligent robot that seeks to ease loneliness. The bot’s head bobs in response to human interactions, and its body includes a touchscreen tablet that connects users to the internet. When ElliQ notices a person hasn’t reached targeted goals, it recommends a personalized activity, like taking a walk. ElliQ also plays tunes to help seniors listen to music throughout the day.

The gadget can also act as a speakerphone to allow convenient calls to loved ones. Alternatively, family, friends, and caregivers can schedule regular, phone-based check-ins. ElliQ can also send alerts to caregivers in the event of an emergency.

Providing more freedom without threatening safety

One of the hallmarks of ambient intelligence is that it continuously monitors an environment and gives feedback based on detected changes. It’s not hard to see why there are numerous applications for ambient intelligence beyond fighting loneliness.

Some older individuals, especially those who are already wary of technology, may resist using innovative options because they fear the gadgets will always be “watching” them. However, ambient intelligence can work in ways that are largely non-intrusive by only intervening if something’s wrong. Some can also provide audio feedback that could help with memory loss.

In other words, while some IoT and AI-powered devices primarily perform monitoring functions, those based on ambient intelligence take on supportive roles. The gadgets align with an aging adult’s desire to live freely and offer them the ability to exercise power over the choices they make. When necessary, devices that work with ambient intelligence can notify caregivers or emergency services personnel to help users avoid dangerous or even fatal consequences.

Like so many other automobiles from this decade, our long-term Jaguar F-Pacecrossover has customizable interior lighting, a part of the $ 2,350 Luxury Interior Package. I’ve previously admitted to the fact that ambient lighting has me split in opinion. On the one hand I know that it’s probably going to end up being dated and uncool in the future. On the other, I actually quite enjoy it, possibly because I grew up in the neon-fueled world of early ’00s import tuner culture. I also like it from a color-coordination perspective. Our Jaguar’s bold blue hue called Caesium can be brought inside with equally bright illumination. It’s very satisfying.

But that satisfaction of having everything just so is quickly sullied as the center stack and switches are only one color that can’t be changed. Admittedly, that’s completely normal, but unlike many of those other cars that use neutral white illumination, the Jag’s light up in the same blue/teal color that made your Razr phone look cool so many years ago. And so whether you bathe your cabin in blue, red, purple or green light, the ambient lighting will clash with the main switch gear. You can pick a shade of blue for the ambient lighting that roughly matches the switches, but I don’t want to compromise my color preference because Jaguar didn’t put in LEDs in that would be neutral (or, even better, change to match the ambient settings).

I have other complaints about color-matching in the car, too. The instrument panel, which is a flat screen, has a few different display modes, but most of the readouts use a similar (but not quite the same) blue/teal color as the switchgear. So that doesn’t match, either.

Then, in the sport mode, the instrument screen switches to red. That brings me to my next gripe: all the ambient lighting switches to red when choosing this mode. I get it, red means sporty and Jaguar wants everything about sport mode to feel sporty. But damn it, I paid for custom lighting, let me keep that lighting when I’m also in a sporty mood. I actually sometimes skip the sport mode because I want to be swathed in my favorite hue more than I want slightly more sporty driving dynamics. Oh, and of course the switchgear remains teal/blue even in sport mode.

So yes, this is picky. But that’s the beauty of evaluating a car like the F-Pace over a longer period of time. Sure, we’ll obviously touch on things like the excellent powertrain, but we also get to notice those little things that can drive owners nuts — or make them fall even deeper in love with their car. After all, despite everything I’ve said, I would still add ambient lighting to my F-Pace if I were to buy one. It just makes it feel a little more personal and fun. I just wish Jaguar put a little extra effort into it.

The Internet of Things is a powerful concept, especially in the industrial world—but it’s also full of potential security disasters and hidden computing and networking costs. But what if all you had to do to create a secure network of distributed Linux systems—complete with location awareness and custom application support capable of supporting location-based applications like asset tracking, robotic delivery, and “smart rooms”—was to change the lightbulbs?

That’s the concept behind Lunera’s Smart Lamps. These LED-based replacements for fluorescent and other commercial lighting systems also have a full Linux server with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, 2 gigabytes of RAM, and 2 gigabytes of Flash storage embedded in their end-caps. The Bluetooth capability includes iBeacon micro-location services—enabling retail, medical, and industrial location services. And the Wi-Fi “enables Wi-Fi network monitoring and also extending the Wi-Fi mesh,” CEO John Bruggeman explained in an interview with Ars. “Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are like electricity and water for the digital experience.”

Lunera had previously shipped LED replacements for commercial lighting system tubes and lamps, including fluorescent and high-pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs. But the new Smart Lamps carry quad-core, 700 MhZ ARM-based processors with memory and storage on the same die. Configurable with a mobile application and controlled through a cloud portal via a dedicated virtual private network, Lunera’s smart lamps can sense each other and create a location-sensitive wireless network mesh using Bluetooth iBeacons—a mesh that can be mapped to CAD drawings of commercial facilities’ lighting systems. And these lamps can run Docker containers, allowing anyone to develop applications that leverage location and Wi-Fi services and what Bruggeman describes as “ambient compute services.”

Our gadgets actually have all kinds of weaknesses that could allow nefarious parties to steal our information, and some of them are things we’d probably never consider.

One of those weaknesses stems from the fact that our PCs, tablets, and smartphones are stocked with sensors that extract information from our environments and use that data to make our devices more useful. Some researchers have found a way to use the innocuous-seeming ambient light sensor to grab potentially sensitive browser data and pass it along.

The ambient light sensor is used for a couple of purposes. It detects background light levels and adjusts screen brightness, and it works as a proximity sensor to determine when to shut off a smartphone’s screen during a call. As the researchers point out, the ambient light sensor is quite precise, and can measure light intensity from completely dark to incredibly bright.

The specific hack that the researchers developed uses the ambient light sensor to pick up color and lighting information from the screen by tapping into the data the sensor passes to the system. Because the sensor’s data is affected by what’s being displayed on the screen, it can be used in a variety of ways to pick up browser information that affects the light that the screen is giving off.

One simple example is the colors of visited links, which are normally obfuscated by the browser to avoid just this kind of snooping. Essentially, the light sensor readings can be used to distinguish between visited and unvisited links and thus inform an attacker as to which links the user had previously visited.

Another example involves using the ambient light sensor data to grab QR codes. That data can be used for such things as hijacking a user’s account when a QR code is used to provide emergency access to an account.

So far, the researchers have managed to create attacks that work in Firefox and Chrome on Android devices and on PCs with ambient light sensors. Certain problems exists, such as changing lighting conditions in real-world situations, and also screen brightness variations. Nevertheless, the attack presents yet another reason to wonder who might be stealing our information in ways that we’d never imagine — or prepare against.
