An official US Embassy vehicle, which was transporting US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat, was attacked in the Mohammadpur district of Dhaka late Saturday “by a group of armed adult men, some on motorcycles,” the embassy said in a statement on Sunday. The ambassador, as well as her security team and drivers, did not sustain any injuries in the attack, the statement added, saying that everyone “departed the area unharmed.”

However, two security vehicles were damaged in the incident. The attack came after the US ambassador left the residence of Badiul Alam Majumder, a secretary of a local civil society advocacy group known as Shujan, around 11:00pm (local time) on Saturday.

As Bernicat was leaving, a group of men attempted to chase the ambassador’s car while hurling bricks at it, Majumder told local media, adding that the attackers then threw bricks at his house as well. Local police confirmed the incident; however, no information has been revealed about the identity of the attackers.

The incident comes amid ongoing mass protests staged by students who demand more safety on the roads after two students were killed in traffic incidents. The demonstrations paralyzed the capital as the protesters blocked roads and disrupted traffic on numerous occasions. Bangladeshi Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan warned on Sunday that actions would be taken against the demonstrators if the protests become too disruptive.

On Saturday, police already used tear gas and batons to disperse crowds of protesters in Dhaka. The clashes left dozens of demonstrators injured, according to media reports. On several occasions, protesters and journalists covering the demonstrations were also attacked by unidentified men carrying sticks and metal rods, other media reported.

Earlier, the US Embassy expressed its support to the protesters by saying that “nothing can justify the brutal attacks and violence over the weekend against the thousands of young people, who have been peacefully exercising their democratic rights in supporting a safer Bangladesh.” At the same time, it also said that it does not “condone the actions of a few who have engaged in senseless property destruction, including of buses and other vehicles.”EditDelete

The embassy itself also issued a “demonstration alert” earlier this week, in which it said that “some public transport and privately owned vehicles have been vandalized during these demonstrations,” citing local news sources. “Previous protests in Bangladesh have turned violent, resulting in traffic disruptions, injuries, and deaths. Participants are known to throw rocks and debris,” the embassy’s statement added at that time.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia’s foreign ministry said on Friday it was summoning ambassadors from Western countries who had taken “unfriendly” steps over the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy and informing them of Moscow’s retaliatory measures.

The ambassador’s of Germany, France and Italy were seen arriving at the foreign ministry building. RIA news agency reported that the Polish ambassador has also arrived.

African ambassadors attending a State Department-organized conversation with Kellyanne Conway left the event disappointed the White House counselor didn’t address the president’s alleged incendiary remarks about immigration from countries he considered undesirable, diplomatic sources told Foreign Policy.

Conway, a key architect of Trump’s presidential bid and one of his top surrogates, spoke to a group of ambassadors, including ones from Africa, on Tuesday morning at the prestigious Blair House near the White House. The event, organized by the State Department’s Protocol Office, was open to all ambassadors in Washington, and diplomats from 120 countries RVSPed.

Egypt summoned the ambassadors from Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands on Sunday, and is also going to summon the ambassadors of the UK and Canada, to protest a statement in which the above-mentioned countries condemned the detention of a human rights lawyer, Ibrahim Metwaly. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has slammed the Western statement as “a blatant and unacceptable interference in domestic affairs and the work of the judiciary.” Metwaly was helping with an investigation into the death of Italian student Giulio Regeni, whose body was discovered in a ditch on the outskirts of Cairo in 2016, with signs of extensive torture, according to Reuters. Judicial sources told the news agency that he was detained on charges of spreading false news and joining an illegal group. The human rights advocate, who founded the Association of the Families of the Disappeared, was detained by airport security in September while heading to Geneva to attend a UN conference.

An odd tweet from an American LGBT and women’s rights activist that warned Russian insurance companies not to cover the life of Russia’s US ambassador has prompted a robust response from the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry.

In a Facebook post, Maria Zakharova said the tweet showed “the intensity of Russophobia that has overwhelmed the United States.”

“I do not even hope that Amy will ever learn about who Sergey Kislyak is and how much he personally has done to save Russian-American relations when the Obama administration announced its isolation crusade against Russia,” the spokeswoman noted.

“But I very much hope that Amy will never learn what the American diplomats were doing, for example, in a number of countries in Latin America, the Middle East, and, of course, in Ukraine,” Zakharova fired back, adding, “otherwise, it can provoke a crisis of the American insurance system.”

The activist, Amy Siskind, who posted the tweet on Saturday, appears to be suggesting that Kislyak’s life could be in danger once he returns to Russia after his tenure.

Bizarre conspiracy theories have emerged in the past alleging that some high-ranking Russian officials, including ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov and former press minister Mikhail Lesin, died when they fell out of favor with the Kremlin.

Kislyak has served as Russia’s envoy to the US since 2008. He is expected to be replaced by career diplomat Anatoly Antonov, the current deputy minister of foreign affairs, whom the Russian parliament approved for the post in May, according to TASS news agency.

As ambassador to the US, Kislyak became the subject of allegations in the mainstream media claiming that Russia had played a role in securing Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 elections.

On one occasion, an unsourced CNN report alleged that Kislyak was a member of a Russian intelligence agency and acted as “a top spy and recruiter of spies,” a claim that Moscow has repeatedly dismissed as groundless.

Some high-profile US ambassadors have strongly criticized the media frenzy targeting Kislyak, however.

“If he’s a spy then all ambassadors are spies,” former ambassador to Russia John Beyrle told ABC in March. “He’s not a spy. To call him a spy is to misunderstand what a diplomat, even a Russian diplomat, does,” he stated. 

Zakharova has also lambasted the spying allegations, advising CNN to stop spreading lies and fake news.

US intelligence services have made it clear to the media that they regularly tap the communications of the Russian ambassador to the US, says Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“In connection with the scandal that was built up around Trump’s adviser, General Flynn, US intelligence services told journalists absolutely officially, though anonymously – that our ambassador’s [Sergey Kislyak] communications are routinely tapped,” Lavrov told journalists.

The tapping includes “his reports to Moscow about his activities in Washington,” the minister added.

Lavrov also called to pay attention to the activities of those who attempt “to survey any processes all over the globe, including via means that are known to be not quite legitimate.”
