Asian utility companies are stockpiling fuel oil as the shortage in natural gas supplies boosts demand for dirtier energy alternatives.

Countries in the region typically see seasonal increases in fuel-oil demand to supplement energy supplies. But in August, Japan's purchases soared to a four-year high while Taiwan and Bangladesh doubled their purchases from last year, Bloomberg reported, citing data from Vortexa.

That's largely been fueled by a slash in Russian gas supplies, leading European and Asian utility companies to compete for the alternatives on the market.

Although natural gas is largely used to generate electricity, fuel oil is used as an alternative. But it's highly pollutive – a sign that countries are setting aside green-energy initiatives to ensure there is enough energy inventory ahead of the winter heating season.

Meantime, other dirty energy sources like coal are also seeing increased demand, according to the International Energy Agency.

But while rich North Asian countries are stocking up on fuel oil, most countries in South Asia have already been pushed out of the natural gas market due to the soaring cost of supplies, and some are already experiencing supply disruptions.

India and Pakistan have been hit with blackouts, with Sri Lanka facing the most severe supply shortage, analysts from S&P Global said.

Smart audio company Sonos has filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission to go public. In doing so, the company warned investors of potential risk factors, such as Sonos’ dependence on competitors like Amazon, and US President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs, which might increase costs for companies like Sonos that depend on imports from China.

However, Sonos made some impressive claims about user satisfaction and loyalty, and it positioned itself as an attractive alternative to the walled gardens that competitors have built.

Sonos has not been profitable in the past, but the filing points out that it has closed the gap more with each passing year. The company claims that while this fiscal year is not complete, it has achieved profitability over the past several months. The filing lays out the numbers:

Tom Kerridge, 44, is helping people lose weight with some healthy but tasty recipes.

His new show Lose Weight For Good hopes to help a group of people wanting to lose weight, cook food that still tastes good.

Every week he also offers some tasty recipes that cut the calories without cutting the taste.

He offers up a mixture of main meals and puddings to satisfy and help them stay on track.

His beef stroganoff is a great recipe to spend some time on cooking for a healthier family alternative.

He uses onions, mushrooms and stock as the base and lots of seasonings and herbs to add some flavour, as well as creme fraiche for a healthy but creamy texture.

Tom recommends tenderising the rump steak which is important to soften the meat before griddling it and served with rice, it comes in at 795 calories per serving for a big, filling dinner.

Another main course is a seafood pot, with cod and prawns for a dose of protein.

Using courgettes, orzo pasta and fennel, tomatoes and stock, it is just 400 calories per serving.

Tom’s cheese, tomato and basil tricolour salad offers a hack to reduce the calories.

His no oil-salad using water, white wine vinegar and seasoning such as garlic salt and paprika, with a cornflour paste thickens the paste to simulate oil.

He recommends using a blow torch to sweeten them without losing the flavour and using ricotta instead of mozzarella.

It is just 150 calories per serving for either a light lunch or small starter.

A pudding of low-fast custard pots also provides a luxury desert without the calories.

Adding orange zest, cardamom and a shot of espresso, finish it by breaking in dark chocolate to create the pots.

Freezing it finishes them off, and are just 155 calories each.

He appeared on Good Morning Britain today to discuss his weight loss and slimmer figure.

The 44-year-old chef explained who he lost 11 stone: “I lost weight by choosing a low carb diet because I could still cook as I wanted, with things like butter and cream.

“As a chef you work long hours, and fall into the trap of drinking a lot and eating late at night.

“Also, the pressure of running a business can make you turn to food.”

Maintaining our home, ourselves, and our possessions to ensure they’re all clean, long-lasting, and presentable takes up a lot of our time. But the irony is that many of the regular exercises we perform are far less efficient (and actually kind of gross) than they really should be.

It makes you ask yourself whether you’re performing the action in order to succeed in a goal, or simply to perform the action alone. If you want to clean your dishes, but you know that the sponge sitting in its own warm, damp ecosystem is likely pretty gross, why do you continue to rub that same thing all over your utensils and consider the job done?

We use the same iconic and unexamined products, like traditional kitchen sponges and toothbrushes, to clean our homes and ourselves daily without considering the fact that they themselves may not be clean — making our own mundane practices more fruitless (and therefore more frequent) than they ought to be in 2017. You actually don’t have to spend so much time maintaining in order to properly maintain yourself and your home.

You just need better products.

If you actually want to lead a cleaner life, have clearer skin, or be able to avoid the ominous mildew smell from creeping into your bathroom, you might want to consider upgrading to things that do what you want them to do, and do it better.

Your mouth and your bathroom are both really dirty places. So it doesn’t make much sense to stick a toothbrush into your mouth to clean it, brush around a bit, and then stick it back in your cupboard or out in the open in your bathroom to breed bacteria, until the next time you stick it in your mouth to clean it.

Users of in the UK’s capital after it was concluded the app is “not fit and proper” to operate.

Transport for London are now looking to block the service leaving millions unable to grab a lift via their smartphones.

In a statement TFL said: “Private hire operators must meet rigorous regulations and demonstrate to TfL that they do so, in order to operate.

“TfL must also be satisfied that an operator is fit and proper to hold a licence.

“TfL has concluded that Uber London Limited is not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence.”

Uber, which allows people to order taxis and pay from their mobile phones, has become hugely popular in recent years with around 3.5 million passengers and 40,000 drivers using the Uber app in London alone.

So when will the service stop working in the capital?

Uber was given just a four-month temporary licence in May – and the taxi firm’s current deal expires on September 30, Transport for London (TfL) said.

This means your Uber app could become ineffective from the end of next week.

Other countries have seen a similar ban which means that although the Uber app still launches no cars will be shown on the screen.

Uber does have 21 days to appeal which means users are unlikely to see any changes until next month.

In an emailed statement, Tom Elvidge, General Manager of Uber in London, said that the company will immediately challenge the decision in the courts. 

The Uber boss posted a statement saying: “Drivers who use Uber are licensed by Transport for London and have been through the same enhanced DBS background checks as black cab drivers. 

“Our pioneering technology has gone further to enhance safety with every trip tracked and recorded by GPS. 

“We have always followed TfL rules on reporting serious incidents and have a dedicated team who work closely with the Metropolitan Police. 

“As we have already told TfL, an independent review has found that ‘greyball’ has never been used or considered in the UK for the purposes cited by TfL.

If the ban does come into force what alternatives are their?

If Uber does get a ban from the UK it will mean millions of people will be looking for another way to get around London.

There are plenty of apps on Apple and Google’s stores which can get you a taxi, although many are not as accessible, easy to use, or offer the same value for money.

MyTaxi brings access to licenced cabs that are in your area and, like Uber, users simply tap to order with no cash payments taking place.

Gett has hundreds of London black cabs which will arrive at your location with a couple of taps on your smartphone.

Unlike some other apps, Minicabster can find local taxi companies to come and pick you up. Users can even compare prices before collection.

Racing drivers and rednecks might say that it’s impossible to have too much power, but supercar makers know that we’re getting close to the limits of adhesion. More specifically, those who still are making high-powered, rear-wheel-drive cars, where traction-limited sub-three-second zero-to-60-mph times have become commonplace, find that adding more power isn’t improving performance so much as it’s just making their traction-control systems work harder.

While McLaren has been one of the holdouts so far, preferring the dynamic purity and lower mass of rear-wheel-drive systems, the company is now contemplating an all-wheel driven future. If it happens, though, it’s some considerable way off.

“We’re not there yet, but I’d say we’re getting close to the limit,” CEO Mike Flewitt told us at the Goodwood Festival of Speed—coincidentally while standing next to the McLaren 720S (photo above), which sends its peak 710 horsepower entirely through the rear axle. “We’re not planning [all wheel drive] right now, but we’re conscious it’s a direction that we may well want to go in.”

Don’t expect any conventional AWD system, though. Flewitt confirms that any integrale Maccas will use an electrically powered front axle in conjunction with a conventional mechanical rear end. “Our hybrid architecture will be flexible,” he said, “and from an engineering point of view there’s no point bringing a shaft down the center of the car.”

He also raised the fascinating possibility that some future McLaren models might gain lightness by losing the rear subframe entirely and mounting their engines directly to the back of the carbon-fiber chassis: “I’m always asking the engineers how to lose weight, and of course racing cars don’t use a rear subframe. I don’t know if you could do it with a road car, there would certainly be some challenges with refinement, but wouldn’t it be great to go tub/engine/gearbox?”
