Alphonso Davies has been voted the Canadian men's soccer player of the year, after a standout season with the men's national team and the Vancouver Whitecaps. 

Davis, who grew up in Edmonton after being born in Ghana, was honoured by a vote shared by media and coaches.

"He has been a standout performer for club and country and that is just a consistent reality now for Alphonso Davies," John Herdman, head coach of Canada's men's team, said in a statement released by Canada Soccer. "For club, he picked up many an accolade, culminating with what looks like one of the biggest signings our country has ever seen."

Christine Sinclair was named women's top player on Tuesday.

Davies won Vancouver Whitecaps FC player of the year honours. He scored eight goals, co-led the team with 11 assists (youngest player in league history to record double digit assists) and was selected to the all-star game.

In July, his rights were transferred to Bayern Munich on an MLS-record transfer fee that could total more than $ 29-million. Davies joined the German champions in late November after he turned 18 years old.

In a record-setting transfer deal, the Vancouver Whitecaps's Alphonso Davies has signed with German soccer giant Bayern Munich.

The 17-year-old Canadian international midfielder's transfer was confirmed Wednesday in a contract that runs until 2023.

The move could amount to more than $ 22 million US, the most ever received by an MLS club in the league's 23-year history, according to a statement from the Whitecaps. 

The previous record was set in 2008 when Spanish club Villarreal spent $ 10 million US to acquire striker Jozy Altidore from the New York Red Bulls.

Davies worked his way into Vancouver's starting lineup by catching coaches' and scout's attention with blazing speed and absolute control of the ball. 

He'll play out the rest of the season in Vancouver and is eligible to join Bayern when the international transfer window reopens in January.

Davies stepped off the practice field at the University of British Columbia to speak with CBC's Dan Burritt about the exciting news.

We've seen the video that Bayern-Munich released, you having fun once the announcement was made, but can you take us back to the moment when you put your name on the record transfer deal? What was going through your mind?

It was exciting. I wasn't expecting this opportunity to come so quickly and now that it did, once I was signing it, I was really, really excited inside. I wanted to jump up and scream but I had to keep my composure.

Anyone who has seen you play, the raw athleticism is there, the skill is there. What does it mean to go to Germany and work with some of the best technical coaches in the world when it comes to soccer?

It means a lot. Going to Germany I think would improve my skill massively. I'm really excited to be playing alongside world-class players, like Robben, Ribery, Alaba, It's just a dream come true.

Your transfer has obviously made news here in Canada. It's made news around the world. We have seen some commentary in some of the U.K. newspapers who are questioning whether or not you might be worth this amount in this record transfer deal. What do you say to your doubters?

I don't really know. I don't really focus on that part. That's not what I'm good at. That's for my people who handled this deal. My part is stay on the field. Play on the field,.Keep myself healthy and play the game that I love.

You're 17 years old. You're chasing a dream and now you're going to be fulfilling that dream. There are a lot of kids in this country and across the world who are watching what you're going to be doing. What's your message to them?

My message to them is just have fun. Listen to coaches of course, but once you're on the field coaches can't play the game for you. You've just got to go out there, have fun and do your best. Play with a smile on your face, because you're playing the game because you love it. You're not playing it because you're forced to.

But now, after just two and half years in Vancouver, Canada's soccer star is bound for Bayern Munich, transferred to the German giants in a sale worth up to a reported $ 20 million, the largest in Major League Soccer history.

It's a career-defining move for the player, one that sets him up for soccer superstardom and one that leaves his soon-to-be former team with coffers full of cash but also a roster to overhaul amid a disappointing season.

'It's breaking my heart'

In a perfect world, Davies would stay in Vancouver and grow his skills while leading the Whitecaps to MLS glory.

But, the big budget business of international soccer, coupled with the deep pockets of mega-teams like Bayern, meant fans knew that losing their best player was an inevitability.

"I think it was treated as a done deal earlier that he was going to be gone by the end of the season," said Peter Czimmerman, the vice president of Whitecaps support group the Southsiders.

"He's been a star in the making since he joined the Caps."

Bayern Munich is among the world's biggest and most successful club teams. The side is a regular contender for the UEFA Champions League — the world's most prestigious club competition —  and boasts a roster loaded with international stars including Dutchmen Arjen Robben, Colombian James Rodriguez and Frenchman Franck Ribéry.

"This move is going to be really good for him," said Czimmerman.  "It's amazing, but it's breaking my heart"

Big budget overhaul?

The transfer will fill club coffers, in theory allowing it to splurge on a much-needed roster overhaul.

Davies' sale comes amid a floundering few weeks for the Whitecaps, with the team losing five of its last six games , including its last three in a row, while scoring just four times over those half dozen matches. The team sits below the playoff cut with nearly two-thirds of the season already over.

"Him being gone, I wish that was our biggest problem right now."

A big-money off-season signing could soften the blow of losing the team's star attraction, while also giving fans a reason to return to BC Place next season.

"It would be giving us a good two or three years while we can wait for the next Alphonso Davies to come up the ranks," said Czimmerman of a potential blockbuster signing.

Golden opportunity

For the outgoing Davies, it's a chance to step onto a stage few Canadian players have graced.

Calgary-born Owen Hargreaves also signed with Bayern Munich as a teenager, and later rose through the club ranks and went on to a decorated career, appearing in a World Cup (for England), winning several major titles and later starring for English powerhouse Manchester United.

But that opportunity is also no guarantee of success.

A new country, culture and level of competition have historically proven to be too much for even some of soccer's brightest young prospects.

At the age of 14, Freddy Adu was hailed as the saviour of American soccer.

He joined the MLS in 2004 and made the jump to Europe at 18 years of age  with Portuguese side Benfica. Adu, now 29, is back in North America but playing in a second-tier league on what is now his 13th team in eight different countries.

More optimistically, Davies could soon line up against the U.S.'s current young soccer saviour, 19-year-old midfielder Christian Pulisic.  The American has established himself as a regular presence on both the USA national team and in the German league as a regular starter for Bayern rival Borussia Dortmund.

Those close to him say Davies is destined to be different.

"I know he'll be fine, because he's got a great head on his shoulders and for being 17 years old, he's taken everything in stride and been so modest," said Whitecaps midfielder Russell Teibert.

Under FIFA regulations, Davies isn't eligible to play for Bayern until his 18th birthday Nov. 2.

Meaning Davies will finish out the season with the Whitecaps and move on to Munich in the fall.

"He's young. He's bright and he's a real talent," said Teibert.  

"Everyone wants to see what he's going to do on the field next."

Reports that Vancouver Whitecaps star Alphonso Davies has finalized a transfer to a German soccer giant are bittersweet for his current coach.

Multiple media reports say the 17-year-old Canadian international midfielder is heading to Bayern Munich.

Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said it would be wrong for the club to stop the rising star — who was not at training on Tuesday — from developing his career and talents abroad.

"Did we want to sell him? No. Because he's a big success on the field," Robinson said after training. "But you can't be selfish at this moment because we've got a wonderful talent on our hands for me at the club level and even at the international level."

The deal is not official yet, however.

"Nothing is final yet, but it's looking good," Bayern coach Niko Kovac told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday in Philadelphia, where the team faces Juventus in a friendly on Wednesday night.

"He is a big talent, he's young and very fast."

TSN has reported transfer fees could reach as high as US$ 20 million with bonuses, an amount that would shatter the record price fetched by an MLS player.

The current record was set in 2008, when Spanish club Villarreal spent $ 10 million to acquire then-18-year-old striker Jozy Altidore from the New York Red Bulls.

Davies has eight assists and three goals in 20 games with the Whitecaps this season, his third with the team. He's also scheduled to play in the MLS all-star game next month.

"He's ready to go and develop," Robinson said. "He's at this age at the moment, I call him a sponge — he's willing to take so much information on board. And you've got to let him do that."

Davies joined the Whitecaps residency program in 2015. He was scouted from Edmonton, where his family settled after emigrating to Canada from a refugee camp in Ghana. Davies was born in the refugee camp in 2000, after his parents fled the Liberian civil war.

Many coaches and staff members have contributed to Davies' development, Robinson said.

"It's not easy to find players at the best of times but to find a player, coach a player, develop a player and teach a player and then sell a player at that value that we think he's going to go for is an incredible feat," he said.

"And I'm sure every MLS team will be envious and want to find the next Alphonso Davies."

The coach said he knows Davies will be supported in every aspect of his life and surrounded by the top talent in the world. But that doesn't mean that watching him go will be easy.

"I'm happy. I'm disappointed because I'm losing one of my boys," Robinson said. "But it's the right thing to do."
