Before Alphabet’s Wing drones can start dropping off deliveries all over the globe, the company has to remedy one of the biggest complaints about it first. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the drones are extremely noisy — someone who lives directly under the drones’ path in rural Australia where they’re current being tested described the sound they make as “chainsaw gone ballistic.” Since the tech will not widely adopted if it’s that noisy (especially in dense urban areas) Wing is now developing a quieter drone.

The Alphabet subsidiary, which used to be an X Lab project until it became a standalone company in mid-2018, has been testing its drones in Australia since 2014. Apparently, the machines create so much noise that people don’t even use their yards anymore. In addition, dog owners are avoiding areas where they pass, because the drones make their dogs nervous. Not to mention, the noise could trigger PTSD symptoms in military veterans.

Since it’s going to take a while before Wing can finish designing a quieter drone, the company has implemented changes to its test machines. It has slowed down their speeds and changed their flight paths, so they don’t pass over the same houses all the time. Those who’ve been taking advantage of Wing’s drone delivery love the convenience they bring, though: they can drop off items within five to ten minutes after purchase, after all. If Wing manages to develop quieter drones, retailers and companies might be more open to using the machines in the future.

There’s a shakeup at Nest today. As was previously rumored back in November, Google just announced Nest will no longer be a standalone Alphabet company; instead, it will merge with the Google hardware team. The current Nest CEO, Marwan Fawaz, will report to Google Hardware SVP Rick Osterloh.

Nest has struggled since its was purchased by Google/Alphabet in 2014. Under Google, Nest was given a huge influx of resources which it used to quadruple its employee headcount and purchase Dropcam. But none of these extra resources resulted in new or improved products. Nest’s CEO and co-founder, Tony Fadell, left the company two years after the acquisition, at which point Nest’s only “new” product under Google was a rebranded Dropcam.

Once the current Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz took over, Nest finally started to push new products out the door. It launched the very expensive $ 300 Nest Cam IQ and the even more expensive Nest Secure home security system, which runs $ 500 for a starter pack. And their cost doesn’t end there: both work best with a monthly subscription fee.

The Alphabet division behind Google Fiber finally has a replacement leader 5 months after its former chief left. The tech giant has hired Dinesh Jain, most recently Time Warner Cable’s former chief operating officer, as the Access team’s CEO. He’ll watch over business in the nearly 20 markets where both Fiber and Webpass operate. There aren’t any indications as to whether or not he’ll usher in a change of direction, but his career may speak volumes about Alphabet’s intentions.

Jain has had over 20 years of experience working at telecoms. Before TWC, he had multiple leading roles at the American cable company Insight and the European provider NTL. Alphabet is picking someone who’s intimately familiar with the telco world and a rock of stability, which it probably wants given the abrupt departure of former CEO Greg McCray.

The Access unit could probably use the help. Access has been on shaky ground ever since Alphabet changed Google Fiber’s direction to pause actual fiber rollouts and focus more on wireless internet. This doesn’t mean you’ll witness a renaissance, but you might see Access regroup and push forward after a year of uncertainty.

Alphabet—the parent company of Google, Nest, Waymo, and a million other companies—is launching a new company under the Alphabet umbrella. It’s called “Chronicle,” and the new company wants to apply the usual Google tenets of machine learning and cloud computing to cybersecurity.

The company is already up and running with an absolutely awesome URL, “chronicle.security,” along with two introductory blog posts (1, 2), a logo, a Twitter account, and a vague sales pitch for some kind of security analysis product. The Chronicle team started in February 2016 under Alphabet’s “Moonshot factory” X group and, before now, had been in stealth mode.

According to the website, the company is building a “cybersecurity intelligence platform” that can help organizations better manage and understand their own data.

(Reuters) — Alphabet Inc said on Thursday its Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt will step down from his position to become a technical adviser as of its next regular board meeting in January.

He will continue to serve on the Alphabet’s board of directors, the company said.

“The time is right in Alphabet’s evolution for this transition,” Schmidt said in a statement. “The Alphabet structure is working well, and Google and the Other Bets are thriving.”

Schmidt will continue to serve Alphabet as an adviser focused on technical and science issues, the company said Thursday.

“I‘m incredibly excited about the progress our companies are making and about the strong leaders who are driving that innovation,” said Chief Executive Larry Page in a statement.

Schmidt, who was recruited to the company by Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, served as chief executive of the company from 2001 through 2011. Schmidt was instrumental to growing the company from a Mountain View, California, internet search startup into a publicly traded, global business with multiple products and business units, former Google employees said.

“He helped them mature into the powerhouse business it is today without throwing away the uniqueness that was Google during those early days,” said Joe Beda, chief technology officer of Seattle startup Heptio and a Google employee from 2004 through 2014.

While Page and Brin would focus on the company’s technology and the product strategies, Schmidt would focus on how to scale every product to a global level, said Bismarck Lepe, CEO of San Francisco startup Wizeline and a Google employee from 2003 until 2007.

“Understanding how to keep and make your customers happy was important, and Eric understood that in spades,” Lepe said. “He was incredibly smart and incredibly technical which made him a perfect fit in the organization.”
