Double Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso returned to the top of the podium when he won his debut World Endurance Championship (WEC) race with Toyota at Belgium’s Spa circuit on Saturday.
The McLaren F1 driver, sharing his TS050 hybrid No. 8 car with Japan’s Kazuki Nakajima and Switzerland’s Sebastien Buemi, led a Toyota one-two in the season-opening Six Hours of Spa.
The victory, from pole, was Alonso’s first in any motorsport championship since he won his home Spanish Grand Prix for Ferrari in 2013.
Alonso is competing in both the WEC and Formula One this season in a bid to become only the second driver, after Britain’s Graham Hill, to take the so-called Triple Crown of Motorsport.
That involves the Formula One title, or Monaco Grand Prix which he has also won, the Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar race and the Indianapolis 500. Alonso will race Le Mans in both 2018 and 2019 with Toyota.
The Spaniard entered the Indy 500 last year, leading the race for a while before retiring with engine trouble.

Britain’s 2009 Formula One world champion Jenson Button will compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours this year and next for Russia’s SMP Racing team in the top LMP1 category, they announced on Friday.
Button, who left Formula One in 2016 but made a one-off comeback in Monaco last year, will do the full World Endurance (WEC) season, competing against former McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso at Le Mans.
Double world champion Alonso is combining his Formula One duties with a full WEC season for Toyota as part of his bid for the “Triple Crown of Motorsport” that includes the Indianapolis 500, which he has yet to win.
This year’s Le Mans 24 Hours is on June 16-17.
SMP said Button, 38, would share a Dallara-designed BR1 prototype car with Russian former F1 driver Vitaly Petrov and Mikhail Aleshin.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to race at Le Mans,” the veteran of 306 grands prix said on the SMP website. “I think it’s every driver’s dream to take part and hopefully go on to clinch that win at Le Mans.
“We go to Le Mans to fight for the win…I think that we really do have a good chance of being competitive at Le Mans,” he added.
SMP team founder and head is oligarch Boris Rotenberg, whose billionaire brother Arkady is a former judo partner of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The Australian set the quickest lap of the day in the morning session with a 1:20.179 and also completed the most laps with 103 – over double the amount he managed last year.
His best time was 1.5 seconds quicker than any time set on medium tyres across eight days of testing last year.
Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas was two hundredths of a second behind him with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen third from 80 laps.
World champion Lewis Hamilton could only manage a 1:22.327 in the afternoon session as he completed a mere 25 laps due to the adverse weather conditions.
Renault duo Nico Hulkenberg – fourth – and Carlos Sainz – sixth – both finished ahead of Hamilton on a positive opening day for the team targeting a surge up the grid this year.
The cool conditions at the Circuit de Catalunya meant reduced running for all of the teams – all of the four fastest times coming in the morning.
Fernando Alonso took a spin just six laps into the morning’s running but recovered to finish in fifth on a largely positive day for McLaren, particularly after the horrific pre-season they endured 12 months ago.
The Spaniard lost control at the final corner, careering off into the gravel and losing his rear right wheel.
McLaren executive director Zak Brown dismissed the incident as nothing serious, citing a wheel nut issue as the root cause.
The team were plagued by reliability issues last season but have swapped engine suppliers Honda for Renault this year and were otherwise trouble-free on the first day.
Alonso lost several hours of running but returned to the track in the afternoon and went fifth fastest with a 1.21.339, completing 50 laps in total.
Toro Rosso, debuting new engine partner Honda, finished in eighth with Dylan Hartley completing the second-highest number of laps with 93.
Force India, who like Toro Rosso also unveiled their 2018 challenger only an hour or so before running began, were 12th.
Reserve driver Nikita Mazepin ran into the gravel at Turn 4 after a spin in the morning session and did not complete any more laps after that.
Cool air and track temperatures, as well as heavy rain, meant a dull afternoon session with many teams cutting short their day’s schedules.
Day two of four of F1 testing begins at 8am UK time on Tuesday.
1) Ricciardo, Red Bull, 104 laps, Medium tyres – 1:20.179;
2) Bottas, Mercedes, 58 laps, Medium tyres – 1:20.349;

11) Ericsson, Sauber, 63 laps, Soft tyres – 1.23.408;
12) Mazepin, Force India, 22 laps, Medium tyres – 1:25.628;

It’s not often that a Formula 1 fan gets to experience what an F1 track feels like from the point of view of a racing driver. An in-car camera just goes so far, and tracks are not always open for the public, or even for track days.
Now, a special Hot Laps program announced by Formula 1 and Pirelli means some lucky participants are able to take part in ridealongs on the same F1 tracks where all the racing action happens. The first two manufacturers that have announced their participation are Aston Martin and McLaren, and as a result the Vantage and 720S will be used in the program. More car manufacturers have reportedly signed up, and they will be named in the near future. The first Hot Laps will be driven at the 2018 Bahrain GP.
The best is still to come. The professional racing drivers that have enlisted for the Hot Laps program are Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen for Aston Martin, and the McLarens will be driven by Mika Häkkinen, Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne. Imagine being taken for a ride by such wheelmen! Just doing a grocery run with Alonso behind the wheel would probably be exciting enough, let alone getting a track experience.
Of course, the one thing that hasn’t yet been mentioned is the price. We can’t imagine a lap can be very modestly priced in this case, but it will sure be a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Unless you can afford two laps, that is.

You’ve seen basketball and soccer (aka football) teams dive into eSports, and now it’s the turn for individual Formula One drivers to get in on the action. McLaren Honda driver Fernando Alonso has launched an eSports team in partnership with Logitech, with Alonso serving as a team principal. The FA Racing G2 Logitech G team — yes, it’s a mouthful — will compete in a slew of games across multiple platforms, and has already enlisted F1 eSports league finalist Cem Bolukbasi.
The team creation came shortly after McLaren appointed Rudy van Buren as an official sim driver following a “World’s Fastest Gamer” competition. McLaren is also the first racing team with its own eSports director.
Alonso explained the move as a logical extension. Each F1 driver is a “gamer at heart,” he said, and virtual racing opens doors for a younger audience that might not get a chance to race in the real world. There’s also the simple matter of marketing: virtual racing serves as a promotional tool that can get fans excited and might even lead to some taking up motorsport as a career.
The next question is whether or not other teams follow suit. The jury’s still out on whether or not eSports teams ultimately help, but it’s hard to see other F1 drivers and teams sitting by the wayside. If there’s even a hint of success, don’t be surprised if a large chunk of F1 eventually fields eSports outfits.

At least that’s what the British constructors’ chief Zak Brown has suggested in the build-up to the final race of the 2017 Formula One campaign.
Alonso has written his name into the F1 history books over the past 16 years and twice won the World Drivers’ Championship with Renault.
His interest in making his mark in the world of motorsport is not isolated to F1 though and this year he competed in the IndyCar Series.
Alonso has previously spoken of his desire to take part in the Le Mans 24 hour race too.
Brown has now revealed McLaren’s stance on their driver going after the Triple Crown – with one aspect of it, victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, already tied up.
“In an ideal world, we would love Fernando to win the triple crown in a McLaren,” said Brown.
“He’s won Monaco, I think we will go back to Indy one day and Le Mans is something we’re looking at.”
Speculation has indicated Alonso could compete in Le Mans next year with Toyota while McLaren develop a car for the race.
And Brown hinted McLaren would be happy for him to do so with another manufacturer.
“In the meantime, if he wants to get some experience at Daytona and Le Mans, we’re open to that,” he explained.
When it was recently announced that Fernando Alonso would race in the 24 Hours of Daytona in January, it was described as a warm-up for an eventual attempt to win Le Mans. “Eventual” may come pretty fast: It now looks like the Formula One champion will race in the Le Mans 24 Hours next season as well.
Or so reports BBC Sport, which says he’ll race for Toyota. But wait, there’s more: The BBC also says he’s in talks with Toyota to drive most of the entire World Endurance Championship — while keeping his day job driving for McLaren in F1.
“Le Mans is agreed,” a source close to Toyota told the BBC. “The rest of the season is still being negotiated, but it looks like he will do most of the races.”
BBC’s sources say Alonso will drive a Toyota WEC car in the season’s last race, in Bahrain on Nov. 19, to get his feet wet. The season’s final Formula One race is the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Nov. 26.
Neither Alonso nor Toyota would confirm an impending deal. Alonso said at practice for this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix: “So far, nothing to comment. We will see. Just rumors.”
What’s motivating him is this: He’s 36 years old and is intent on becoming only the second driver, after Briton Graham Hill, to win motorsport’s Triple Crown. That entails winning the Formula One title (or just the Monaco Grand Prix according to one interpretation) as well as Indianapolis and Le Mans.
He has won Monaco as well as the 2004 and 2005 world titles. He recently signed a contract extension keeping him at McLaren in 2018.
As for the Indy piece of the Triple Crown, Alonso famously raced there this year and was running competitively when his Honda engine failed in the closing stages of the race. So expect to see him there again as well.
Racing with Toyota at Le Mans and other endurance races should give him better luck than he had this season with McLaren-Honda in F1 and at Indy. Though Toyota has never won Le Mans, it is known to be developing a new WEC car.
Traveling the globe to race in both the WEC and F1 in the same season sounds grueling, but it might be possible. The circuits have provisional schedules, and there’s just one conflict — the U.S. Grand Prix and a WEC race in Japan are both penciled in for Oct. 21.
But McLaren sounds none too keen on him doing the whole WEC schedule. McLaren racing director Eric Boullier told the BBC: “He has said he is keen to do some races outside. There is a case-by-case discussion. His main and first focus is F1, so that has to be the priority. We do everything we can to give him a competitive car and if he has this he will not race anything else.
“I don’t think you can physically do two programs. It would be complicated. Doing Le Mans or Indianapolis or Daytona, why not; it’s a one-off. But more than this it is definitely a distraction from his main commitment.”

AUSTIN, Texas — Double world champion Fernando Alonso will stay with McLaren in 2018, the team said on Thursday in a long-expected announcement that finally ended one of the sagas of the Formula One season.
McLaren did not say whether the new contract extended beyond next year.
The Spaniard has endured a miserable three years with the British-based former world champions and had refused to commit to staying until he felt they could provide him with a competitive car.
McLaren have gone some way towards answering those doubts by ending a troubled partnership with Honda and switching to Renault engines in 2018.
“It’s fantastic to be able to continue my relationship with everybody at McLaren. It was always where my heart was telling me to stay, and I really feel at home here,” the Spaniard said in a team statement at the U.S. Grand Prix.
“McLaren has the technical resource and financial strength to be able to very quickly win races and world championships in F1,” added the 36-year-old, who won his two championships with Renault in 2005 and 2006.
“Although the last few years have not been easy, we have never forgotten how to win, and I believe we can achieve that again soon.”
Alonso has not been on the podium since 2014, when he was with Ferrari. His last win was in Spain in 2013, again with the Italian team.
McLaren is currently ninth overall, out of 10 teams, and the season ranks as the worst of Alonso’s career with the exception of his debut year with now-defunct tail-enders Minardi.
He has six retirements in 16 races so far in 2017, and failed to start in Russia while also missing Monaco to compete at the Indianapolis 500 in May. The Spaniard has scored points only twice.
McLaren executive director Zak Brown said continuing with Alonso, as team mate to Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne, had always been the obvious thing to do.
“His commitment will allow us to further improve the attractiveness and potential of the wider Group, and will ensure we head into 2018 feeling increasingly confident that we’ll be able to take a meaningful step forward,” he said.
“Fernando fully understands and buys in to the direction we are taking.
“Our shareholders have ambitious plans for the whole Group, and success within Formula One is a central pillar of that strategy. With Fernando, there is no doubt that we have a driver who can help us achieve our goal of winning again in F1.”
